The long waiT is over. going the extra Mile, an idiom which means “to give effort more than the expected,” is the theme for the latest installment of The

Bedan Herald’s annual sports magazine, momentum. as it underwent a major facelift, momentum showcases the exce-ptional facets of Bedan athleticism to further accentuate the animo that roars inside our hearts. The Bedan Herald went the extra mile in order to feature someone whom we believe is the epitome of an outstanding Bedan athlete. That is why it is a great honor for us to make Pia Boren, a Communication and Me-dia Studies alumna, a multi-awarded female car racer and Philippine’s first female drifter as our cover story. we slyly dig the secrets behind her much success in various fields of motor sports to bestow inspiration and motiva-tion to all Bedans. The magazine itself is a witness to the talents and potentials of every Bedan that could go beyond limits. This year’s issue of Momentum also high-lights the stories of our hardworking sports teams including the newly es-tablished Badminton team, Table Tennis team and Football club on our Red lions insider section.

it also traces the roots of the interesting history of our well-treasured Bedan chants as well as it unveils the meta-morphosis of coaches Jessica and James Tolentino in the ice skating rink and basketball court respectively from their lives as student athletes to mentors. after months of conceptualization, photoshoots and editing, The Bedan Herald proudly presents to you a bigger and better momentum. This magazine was created to give homage to the outstanding Bedan athletes whom we believe would go the extra mile to achieve excellence.

whaT YoU holD in your hands is the result of Bedan athletes ‘going the extra mile,’ all for the glory of the Mighty Red School down south. This is also the result of several months worth of blood,

sweat and tears to bring a bigger and better edition of momentum, the official sports magazine of San Beda College alabang. as you read through the magazine’s fifth iteration, you will see these sports-minded individuals showcasing their skills to the Bedan com-munity. These contenders are truly driven – driven on the road to victory. By ‘going the extra mile,’ the alabang-based athletes have shown the passion they have for their craft, the perseverance they demonstrate during train-ings and the potential they possess to succeed. it is my fervent wish that this magazine will serve as an inspira-tion to the ballers who often fall short of the championship; to the team players who juggle with their duties as student athletes; to the unsung he-roes who are rarely appreciated in school; to the challengers who trudge on through their injuries; to the Bedans who are pressured to win despite the difficulties; and to those who were told they would never amount to anything in life. To quote our beloved alma mater hymn, “Bring out the chal-lenges, we’ll win them all!”

FOREWORD

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I suc-ceed.” ~ Michael Jordan

Most likely, everybody in the College knows who “Ms. M” is. Physical education program coordinator Ms. Cynthia Manalo is one of the longest serving professors in the CaS, teaching Bedans for already 23 years. She is graceful, full of life and if you’d been one of her students she would greet you “hi anak!” whenever you meet her along the corridors. her passion and enthusiasm in teaching Pe are overflowing that makes her students at ease studying the subject. Ms. Manalo says she loves the field of education because it keeps her surrounded with the youth, which in turn brings out the youth in her. “each year that passes brings me closer to younger generations, which allows me to keep up with the trends,” she shares. Moreover, we can say with no doubt that Ms. Manalo’s passion lies in dancing—she has been dancing since grade school up to now that she is a lifetime member of the Philippine Folk Dance Society. also, she has constantly been performing in dance concerts and in programs involving school officials. Ms. Manalo has always wanted to help people in terms of health and fitness that she even dreamt of becoming a nurse before. But she shares that she chose Physical education as her course in college because “it does not only involve playing sports, it also focuses on the whole physical health and wellness of my students.” She finished Bachelor of Sci-ence in education Major in Physical education Minor in Music at Philippine normal University and attained a master’s degree in Physical education from the same school. Ms. Manalo loves playing many kinds of sports, too; but the two sports closest to her heart are swimming and bowling. From time to time she does swim some laps in SBCa’s olympic-size swimming pool at the Sports Complex to maintain her fitness. Ms. Manalo is not really competitive, she says, though she has already won several trophies in bowling tournaments including The PalMS Country Club Bowling Tournament.

Mr. adrian Somido believes that physical education teachers carry an important role in nation-building by teaching their students how to become physically fit and healthier human beings. “health is wealth” as the saying goes. indeed, Mr. Somido proves this right, sharing that having a healthy mind and body does not only make a person strong and ready to face life challenges, but also gives him or her more youthful vibe. and perhaps this is the reason why Mr. Somido chose to teach as a profession, specializing in physical education. “Teaching is one of those rare professions that keep your brain young, allowing you to continue your own journey as a student and a lifelong learner,” he says. Mr. Somido finished Bachelor in Physical education at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and is taking up his master’s degree in Physical education at Philippine normal University. aside from teaching, Mr. Somido is also into playing badminton and dancing. he was part of the PUP Dance Sports Team way back in college and has recently been awarded as gold medalist at the Centro escolar University (CeU) Sports Fest – Dance Sports Competition.

Mr. Reynaldo lucero is a P.e. instructor who knows the spirit of athleticism very well. aside from teaching Team Sports to Bedans, Mr. lucero is also coaching the newly established Football Club of the College. his passion for football can be traced back during his childhood when he started to play the sport at the age of 8. Since then, Mr. lucero also has been involved to a lot of sports including badminton, futsal, swimming, and even dragon boat racing that he and his team won a dragon boat competition in Macau. he really loves sports that he took up Bachelor in Physical education at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and decided to teach P.e. “to develop the potential athletes in different fields.” with Mr. lucero in our midst, we can say that physical education in the CaS is going to a higher level as well as the fledgling Football Team he is coaching.

Mr. John Paul Domingo is an instructor of Rhythmic activities and individual and Dual Sports in the College. Before going into teaching physical education and sports, “Sir JP”—as he is commonly known—had dreamt of becoming a chemist. But due to limited financial resources when he was still entering college, Sir JP chose to venture into sports, dance and recreational activities as he took up Physical education and Sports in Polytechnic University of the Philippines, where he graduated cum laude. now he enjoys teaching P.e. to students because according to him, it has “opened doors of opportunities for professional growth, international dance exposures, book authorships, and socialization,” not to mention the health benefits he is getting from this field. he was not actually an athlete before but a dance performing artist. “Raketista ako!” Sir JP exclaims, saying that in the past he used to study in the morning, attend to dance rehearsals in the afternoon and teach dancing at night. with this, he shares that he has already achieved a lot of meritorious awards and recognition in the field of dance. Sir JP lives up the latin quotation “mens sana incorpore sano” which translates to “a sound mind in a sound body.” To attain the former, he reads books, watches movies and goes clubbing whenever he’s free. at present, this bubbly professor is taking up a master’s degree in Physical education and Sports at PUP. m

TheY aRe The ones who teach us the basics of body fitness and engage us in physical activities that develop our strength, flexibility and camaraderie with others. They bring out the sweat in us and make our muscles expand

and contract. Moreover, through the way they teach physical education to us can we see their enthusiasm, passion and love for their job. now, let us warm up for a while as momentum tells you the things you do not probably know about our P.e. professors.

San BeDa haS a rich and colorful history dat-ing back to its founding in 1901. The tradi-tion lives on in San Beda alabang since the

time the Benedictine monks set a foothold in the Metro South in 1972. The school, named after the Venerable Bede of england, naturally chose the heraldic symbol of the ancient Scots/english for courage. San Beda adopted the Red lion, the symbol of courage in the Catholic tradition and in the land of St. Bede.

Ánimo101 one of the more popular lines in the traditional Bedan cheers is “¡Ánimo San Beda!” Ánimo is a Spanish word which means spirit. it is used as an expression of encouragement by Spanish speaking societies. Bedans use ¡Ánimo! to mean courage in their cheers. when Bedans yell “¡Ánimo San Beda!” they actually mean “Courage San Beda!/have Courage San Beda!” while other schools have come to use the term Ánimo as well, it is only San Beda that uses this in its proper Spanish context. in the pre-war Spanish San Beda cheer (also known as el Colegio de San Beda Tieneque-ganar!), “¡Ánimo!” is also included. even in the tra-ditional english cheer, “Stand on the grandstand”, “¡Ánimo!” is extensively used. The most recent cheer which incorpo-rates “¡Ánimo San Beda!” is the 1970s SBCa. Said cheer was adopted in the 1970s to pay tribute to the new addition to the Benedictine community, the Benedictine abbey School - San Beda ala-bang.

Stand on the Grandstand “Stand on the grandstand” is unique because it is the only official Bedan cheer that was banned by the SBC administration in the late 70s for being too aggressive. The cheer was dropped from the official cheers hoping to be forgotten. it went underground instead and was used espe-cially during powwows. Things changed. The “violence” associ-ated with the cheer was forgotten. Bedans, being true to tradition, slowly revived the cheer in the late 90s. now it’s back with a vengeance! our tra-

dition is alive! The University of Santo Tomas at one point emulated and later on dropped their rendi-tion of the “Stand on the grandstand”. “…when some members read in an online forum that San Beda was claiming the “an-imo” cheer as theirs, they looked into the claim. when they found out that the claim had basis, the Yellow Jackets immediately took it off its list of cheers.” it is a shared belief among Bedans that the popular line “animo ________, Beat _________” used by other schools as a stand-alone cheer, originated from the 1950s Bedan Cheer, “Stand on the grandstand”.

Lion’s Roar San Beda’s lion’s Roar was initially used to signify the entry of the little indians and as a prelude to the indian Yell. eventually, it served as a stand-alone chant distinct from the indian Yell itself. Considered as a derivative chant of all the previous “wohooos”, and other american indian inspired war whoo-ping. The lion’s Roar traces its roots to the north american infatuation with native american war whooping. The first ever known version of the native american war whoop (also known as the wohooo/wahooo) in collegiate sports was the 1878 indian Yell of Dartmouth College. This was followed a decade later by University of Virginia’s version of the wahooo. The wahooo of Dartmouth was cheered while that of UV was sung. The lion’s Roar is still an integral part of the Bedan arsenal in the battle for supremacy in Philippine collegiate sports.

The Indian Yell San Beda’s infatuation with native american chanting in collegiate sports was officially established with the introduction of the indian Yell in 1947. The Cuerba brothers composed the indian Yell in 1947 after the liberation from the Japanese empire. The indian Yell was initially solely performed on drums accompanied by cheers from the students. however, this made the cheer somewhat lacking in power and needed

something to rejuvenate the audience. So they changed the sound of the yell and incorporated a horn section. accompanied by the tomahawk chop, the indian Yell became more lively, intimi-dating and full of spirit. The indian Yell is San Beda’s romanti-cized version of the indian war whoop. it mimics the native indian war chants and vocalization techniques designed to intimidate the opponent. north american indian war chants are verbaliza-tion of tunes that implore the great spirits to help them in battle.

The Little Indians To accompany the indian Yell, the little indians were conceptualized by Ramon Ventosa (gS ‘46, hS ‘51). Mon Ventosa is the longest serv-ing moderator/instructor of the San Beda College Cheering association. a cheerleader himself dur-ing his student days in San Beda College, Mon was appointed as instructor of the College’s Cheering Squad (1952–1962). he came up with idea to ac-company the indian Yell for the half-time cheer-ing. There were only three indians in 1947: gabriel gasar and the Casal brothers, one of which eventually became a Benedictine monk. Slowly, the recruitment process changed and participation from the grade school pupils rose because many wanted to become little indians. Mon wanted the indians to be stout and adorable. From three indians since 1947, the membership rose to a minimum of eight in the 90s. The little indians were also introduced, both as junior “cheerleaders” for the yell and for visual impact. a shorter version of the wohooo is incorporated in the chorus of the indian Yell.

CoaCh JaMeS TolenTino has made a remark-able step in his life when he decided to stay in SBCa, his alma mater, to start another chapter in

his life as a coach. although recently injured, the head coach of the aspiring Red Cubs of San Beda alabang did not hesitate to push through an interview with momentum to talk about how his love for basket-ball grew and how he ended up coaching in SBCa.

Starting young “i think i was four or five [years old] when i started playing [basketball]. i really love the sport,” Coach James says. at that tender age, being introduced to basketball for the first time must have been exciting for him. as time passed by, that excitement turned into passion for the sport. Since then, he continued to un-leash that passion in every game that he has played. For many, high school is the best part of a person’s life and that rings true for Coach James. it was unforgettable for him when he tried out for the basket-ball team during his freshmen year, almost ending up not making the cut. But it did not stop him from giving his best in the sport he loves. eventually, it paid off and led him to being the Red Cubs team captain during his senior year.

Bedan all the way after graduating from high school, Coach James considered the possibilities of studying in other schools. he finally decided to take up Computer ap-plication in San Beda Mendiola. however, he started missing his old school and so after a year in Manila, he returned to San Beda alabang taking up information Technology (iT). But in the end, Coach James shifted from in-formation Technology to entrepreneurship, the course really wanted. “entrepreneurship talaga ‘yung gusto ko eh. But before, everyone was egging me on taking i.T. kasi malakas ‘yung i.T. nun eh,” Coach James shares. as he went back, he brought with him his tal-ent in basketball and with that everyone witnessed his perseverance and hard work that led him to being the team captain of the Red lions team of SBCa.

Student athlete, student leader aside from his basketball prowess, Coach James was also an active student leader. he was the man behind the formation of Bedistang aktibong na-glilingkod (Bedan) political party and through this, he was able to wrest the Student executive Council (SeC) presidency. aside from that, Tolentino also initiated the creation of the Bataleon de leon Rojo (the former name of Red lion Pep Squad).

COaCh JaMEs tOLENtiNO:

Passion for coaching his coach during his high school days saw the potential in Tolentino as he offered him to be an assistant coach even though he was still in his senior year in college. But at that time he was hesitant as he wanted to keep on playing still. and for him, that was a great idea as he had became a part of the team that became champions. after graduating in 2006, he was offered to coach for the second time, which he accepted. “Nung inalok ako ng coaching dito [San Beda], i just couldn’t say no because it’s my passion. [Besides] parang bahay ko na rin to,” he exclaims. it was at that time when he started coaching that the basketball boys’ team gained their first win in the national Collegiate athletic association-South (nCaa-South) still unaware that they would continue to win five more times after that under his guidance. “Matagal ko nang naisip mag-coach. actually, there were offers from other schools also. Pero nung nag-ask ‘yung [San] Beda, syempre priority pa rin,” Tolentino tells momentum. “nothing compares to home,” he adds. Despite opportunities in the corporate world, that did not stop Tolentino to pursue a career in the field of basketball.

The man behind the victory his knowledge in entrepreneurship was not put to waste. “There are a lot of intrinsic values that i learned that i really carry out in life. how to handle business, how to handle pressure, my time,” he says. he applied those values in bringing the basketball boys’ junior team to its 6-peat victory. “at that time, i was given a chance to head coach. First time ko nag-head coach,” Tolentino shares. when asked what it felt to win, he says that it was fulfilling to see the fruit of the players’ labor. at the same time, it is also fulfilling to bring happiness and pride to the student body. however, the Red Cubs lost to the De la Salle lipa Junior Chevrons, cutting off their 6-peat streak. But it did not leave Tolentino bitter or angry. “i don’t think we lost. i think we gained a lot of experiences. we might not have the title but we made the kids become champions pa rin. So kung matuto sila on how to become champions in their own personal lives, that’s the best reward a coach can have,” he exclaims.

Bedan haven Tolentino believes that “in order to receive, one should also give,” back-ing up his decision of staying in SBCa to coach. For him, imparting his talent to the school is one way of giving back what the school had given to him especially because it became really close to his heart as to home. when asked what his secret was in being so dedicated to the school, he simply said, “Since you’re here, SBCa will always be a part of who you are.” m

BaCK in 2009, Ma. Jessica “Buchik” Cabili shared her pas-sion as a figure skater in a sit-down interview with The Bedan Herald. This time, she is back after making the

successful transition from student to teacher. now a Communication and Media Studies senior, Jes-sica is no longer joining competitions hosted by the SM ice Skating Rink association. instead, she is guiding young figure skaters in their endeavor to master the sport and conquer local and international ice skating competitions. ice-skater-turned-coach Jessica shared why she quit figure skating and later on returned to the rink to coach aspiring figure skaters. The transition from student to teacher has been tough for Jessica and several incidents pushed her to almost quit being on the ice altogether. Fortunately, her love and pas-sion for the sport is unwavering. This pushed her to find other ways to stay dancing on the ice.

From student to teacher Jessica officially started coaching figure skaters on July 2010, just a few months after the first issue of The Bedan Her-ald’s sports magazine was released. in a span of 11 months, sev-eral things happened: the national team for figure skaters was dissolved, Jessica parted ways with her ice skating coaches, and their resources slowly dwindled since financial support from the government died along with the dissolution of the national team. “i was so disappointed…to think na it’s not for nothing

kasi you win competitions, nag-uuwi kayo ng karangalan para sa bansa and then all of a sudden, they just can’t support you,” Jessica says. without the government’s financial support, it was hard for the figure skaters and the SM ice Skating Rink to shoul-der the expenses that the equipment and training entail. Be-cause of this, figure skaters decided to lay low for a while. however, despite the difficulties, Jessica did not want to leave the sport that she learned to love since she was nine. So when she was offered a coaching position by the management, Jessica grabbed the opportunity. Jessica shares, “at least engaged pa rin ako sa skating, nasa yelo pa rin ako…Hindi ako umaalis dun sa pangatlong ba-hay ko.”

Sharing her passion During her time as a blooming figure skater, Jessica enjoyed joining competitions. For her, it spices up her figure skating life. “Para saan pa ang practice kung walang competi-tion. Because [without competitions] you will never know kung hanggang saan ka na,” Jessica explains. as a coach, Jessica’s trainees have reached new heights when they joined the recently held Skate asia 2012. The Skate asia is an annual skating competition participated by South east asian countries. last year, it was held on august in Malay-sia. Unfortunately, Jessica was caught up in school work and was unable to accompany her students in the competition. But even though her students are competing as our

country’s representatives, they are not officially the Philippine na-tional Team. Jessica says they are independent figure skaters who compete locally and internationally, carrying the name of the Philip-pines. nonetheless, this recent milestone in Jessica’s coaching ca-reer will not slow her down. “Ayoko mag-settle dahil lang nakapagpa-compete na ako ng mga bata. i believe na as a coach, you never settle down sa mga bagay na simple lang. Kailangang mag-dream ng iba’t ibang goals and you reach for them,” she says. Jessica feels like she can do better and help her students reach their goals. Values are more important for her than talent. She does not want her students to be role models to fellow skaters only but she wants them to be someone anyone can look up to, figure skater or not.

Learner, mentor even though Jessica is earning enough from her coaching job, she never looked at figure skating as a business. That is why even though she had a hard time juggling school and coaching, she never quit. She sees it as a continuation of her skating career that was al-most postponed due to the dissolution of the national team. She feels like she is fit to coach her students because she has already gone through what they are experiencing right now – the extensive training and pressure of joining competitions. Besides, Jes-sica believes that a good coach is not only a good teacher; she needs to be a good student as well. “You stop leading if you stop learning,” Jessica shares her mantra in life. She says she is still willing to learn, this time from her students, since skating three years ago was different from today. But if she is to choose between coaching and figure skating, Jessica says she is willing to go back to skating if given the opportu-nity. There are olympic skaters aged 24 or 25 and she thinks she is still fit to perform once she reach that age. learning and mentoring – Jessica has experienced both sides when it comes to figure skating. She still misses the heart-stop-ping moments when she has to face the crowd and glide on the ice. She will surely cherish those memories. at present, she is helping as-piring figure skaters to create memories of their own. and for now, that is enough. m

auto sports are known for its high standards and demands; unlike in ball games, these rely not only on physical stamina but also on sufficient knowledge to handle the complexity of a sports car.

every loud screech of wheels, each cautious step on the gas and brakes while roaming in circuits reflect on the crucial dis-ciplines that a racing athlete should possess. no wonder why this kind of sports had always been associated with masculinity. it was not until Pia Boren decided to drift away from what was stereotypi-cal and became a multi-awarded female racer.

now that she is one of the prominent auto sport perso-nalities in the country, indeed, Pia betokens the edge of being an outstanding Bedan.

Tracing back her childhood days, Pia recalls that her passion in driving started at a young age. “when i was a kid i thought i’ll be driving motorcycles. i remember i knock on the doors of my neigh-bor’s house. Noong bata palang talaga ako malikot na ako. My bike had a Barbie [doll] sa harap. So that you know i had some kind of back-ground,” she says. however, the hunch from her childhood life turned out the other way around during her teenage years when a friend invited her to see a movie. instead of going to a movie theater, they ended up buying a new pair of rubber shoes and landed on a race track to try karting-and that’s when she realized that racing is something that she wants to do for the rest of her life. Pursuing her newfound passion, Pia took various lessons be-ginning with Kart one Raceway competition in 2001 in which she was hailed as over-all second place and one of the fastest female drivers. in 2002, Pia won two competitions—the arthur Tuason Me-morial Cup in which she bested 25 male contenders with a 47.790 lap time, the fastest in the competition; and the Super Karting Series where she was declared as the Consistent Top Finisher. She was also recognized as Fastest lady of the Season and fourth place in the 2003 Ford lynx Cup novice division and in 2004, she ranked fourth in Formula Toyota.

inside the lion’s den Pia was originally a Business Management student in De la Salle University until she decided to take a break from college to focus on her ris-ing career in racing. after three years, she went back to school and entered San Beda College alabang, taking up Bachelor of arts in Communication and Media Studies. During her stay at SBCa, Pia shared that she was not a typical stu-dent. She was not grade conscious and not very active in non-academic school activities. She would leave classes immediately because she was either racing to become a champion or reporting about champions. in 2005, Pia, though a lion-

ess from alabang, became the official courtside reporter of the San Beda Red lions team of Manila at the national Collegiate athletic association (nCaa) Season 81. her stint lasted for three more seasons that opened the doors for her in hosting other nCaa events such as the 2008 Samsung nCaa Cheerleading Competition and nCaa hoops, an nCaa basketball-oriented show aired in Studio 23. “even though i’m a lasallian most of my life, i felt very at home with the Bedan community probably be-cause i did a lot of courtside reporting to the Red lions during my stay here. [and] that helped me adopting the culture, the mindset of my friends and

the Bedan community made me really comfortable,” she says. aside from working as a sports host, Pia is also into writing about car racing. She was one of the editors of the well-acclaimed motor-ing magazine, Top Gear Philippines and also, she hosted other motor sports ori-ented show aired in various TV chan-nels and radio stations. when asked about what fueled her up to do all these things together, the award-winning athlete said, “The way i see things, if you really want to do something, it’s not a matter of distance, [it’s] not a matter of time. if you want to do it, then you will end up doing it.”

Pia is one of the more popular female per-sonalities in the local racing scene. in 12 years, she has held multiple titles and has breaking records. after being victorious in the Ford lynx Cup expert Division in 2005, Pia also won the op-portunity to test drive a Formula 3, becoming the first Filipina to do such. when the film The Fast and the Furious: To-kyo Drift was at the height of its popularity in 2006, Charlie Cruz, a former karting teammate of Pia, told her that he was bringing a new car sport called “drifting” in the country. Pia did not turn down the offer of a trial in the sport.“ he explained and showed me the movie Tokyo Drift. i thought it was interesting and then i gave it a shot,” Pia shares with momentum. Since then Pia was known as the “first fe-male drifter” of the country, earning a lot of awards in various drifting contests that cemented her

winning streak in motor sports for more than a decade. The versatile driver has also been rep-resenting the Philippines in the international scene as she was involved in the action-packed hollywood blockbuster film The Bourne Legacy as a stunt driver. in addition, Pia and other Filipino racing veterans are scheduled in March 2013 to represent the country in the naSCaR Racing ex-perience world Circuit, a prestigious racing com-petition in the United States of america. For Pia, to be able to inspire the youth is one of the best awards that she could ever receive as a professional racer. “To be honest, it’s not really about the number of trophies i brought home; it’s when a little girl comes up to you and say ’i just want to be a race car driver just like you’ because it means blurring the lines of stereotypes.”

racer, drifter, stunt driver

Tapping her background in com-munication and media, Pia ventured in the field of advertising, becoming the presi-dent of her own ad agency named Boren advertising, Strategies and Management, inc. her major clients include big time mo-bile phone and sports apparel companies. Pia is indeed a wonder woman for being able to juggle both her business and sports career.“ i think my character transcends over whatever i’m doing, like what is in my business, when there is an event, you know. That’s why you should not change because you’re in a different environment. You are who you are,” Pia says. The Bedan racer strongly be-lieves in the power of determination, pas-sion and hard work as the key to reaching the top. “The harder i work, the luckier i get.” She also mentioned that if one wants to achieve he or she must work extra hard-er for it, consider what you’ve got as bless-ings and thank the lord for everything. Pia shared her two cents worth for aspiring Bedan racers: first, they must attend proper racing schools and second, they must put their hearts on racing. as momentum tells the story of this “Modern Filipina” racer, it is just fit-ting to say that Pia in on the right track—maintaining the right velocity while driv-ing along the road of success. m

ChEER FOR gLORy, FLy FOR suCCEss

By mArCh Anetonette ortuostephotogrAphs By CeAsAr JAn entilA

We haVe wiTneSSeD this group of cheerleaders train until sweats run dry and cheer ‘til their voices run sore. we have heard of these cheerleaders fight different

challenges and competitions and still they continue to prove the title they deserve. From their old name Bataleon de leon Rojo until its present calling, we can never deny that Red lion Pep (RlP) Squad is still amplifying the animo within every Bedan. But aside from the common knowledge that RlP Squad is the CaS’ official cheering squad, what else do we know from this team? let us seek deeper behind this fighting squad’s cheers and wild stunts. Some CaS students do not know that RlP is not yet on the varsity line-up of the College, but amidst the unkempt posi-tion, this squad continues to cheer for the alabang Red lions even without the said title. RlP Squad has unexpectedly grown its number to a group of persevered cheerleaders who train until late at night; but RlP Squad coach and BaCMS alumnus lyndon Villanueva says the group is still lacking people who are interested to per-form given the fact that there are no incentives in being a mem-ber of the squad. “Passion is what we only have right now and that’s why we are still training as a family and performing for

god and [for] the people for years,” Villanueva shares. Buying their own pairs of shoes and paying their dance and stunt coaches from their own allowances, are only few of the sacrifices these cheerleaders selflessly do as they continue to prove that they deserve a varsity status and be named as San Beda College alabang’s official college pep squad. “actually bilog ‘yung problema namin,” RlP Squad Cheer Captain ana gizelle Caoile told momentum. She also shared that even though there are a lot of trials, they would all end up feeling priceless for doing a thing that is totally worth it. RlP Squad never lost hope as they continue to fight, cheer and tumble for the College’s glory amidst the lack of support given by the college and the administration. Some of their achievements were bagging a slot in the national Cheer-

leading Championships ’08 Qualifiers, third runner up on the Muntin-lupa inter-collegiate athletic association wildcard winner in the South Metro Cheerdance Competition in october 2010. “even though we are not considered [as] athletes [of SBCa], we train like one,” Caoile quips. “[Just like any other pep squads,] we lift not weights, but humans. we tumble and jump like gymnasts and dance as one. ‘Yung routine kapag binawasan mo ng isa, hindi na siya maganda kasi we are choreographed to dance as one. Kapag na-injure ka before the performance, kailangan mo pa ding tapusin ‘yung rou-tine. Ganoon kahalaga ang isa’t-isa sa amin, lahat may kwenta.” Caoile said that the RlP Squad today is completely differ-ent as they are now driven by new goals. “Bago ‘yung mga tao, bago ‘yung mga pangarap. Kung hindi kami magbabago ng sistema, ng pag-papalakad at kung di malinaw ang gusto namin abutin, hanggang dito na lang kami,” she shares. Caoile adds that she then knew that there are other members of RlP Squad all over CaS who remained inactive despite the support needed by the squad, but that didn’t weaken her but instead serves as a motivation in working things out for the bet-terment of RlP Squad in the present. She also shares she is aware that RlP Squad today is not yet that strong as compared to other pep squads coming from bigger colleges and universities, but what is im-portant is that they value hard work and dedication as they strive hard for the varsity status and as they try to earn the trust and support of the entire Bedan community. RlP Squad has been training real hard to have a far improved performance and to succeed in finishing a clean number with more striking stunts. with that, the squad is also hoping to catch the atten-tion and interest of those who also has skills and passion in cheerlead-ing. But for now, with dedicated hearts, passion and for the purpose of igniting the Bedan spirit, RlP Squad is looking forward to participat-ing in the all-girl cheer dance competition of women’s Colleges Sports association 2012 and women’s national Collegiate athletic associa-tion 2012. we are all witnesses of the driven perseverance of these cheerleaders, and together with the Red lion Pep Squad, let us cheer for our college’s glory whatever circumstances may be. This battleon of pure red-blooded Bedans continues to stand and roar igniting the animo–living up the lives of young, fierce and proud alabang Red li-ons m

The Red lion Pep Squad has been a family to me since the team started in 2007 as Bataleon de leon Rojo. it was tough but it was worth it because i knew at the end of the day, there would be an improvement. after i graduated, i gave a part of my time to teach what i’ve learned because i knew there was a potential for the squad. now, most of my trainees are very com-petitive. To my RlP Squad, let us keep the tradition alive! we all know our capacity and day by day we train because we believe on ourselves. let’s hold on our beliefs and one day it would be our pavement for our success. Remember that in all things, god must be glorified. For the Bedan community who believes in us, i would like to personally say “thank you” for the support we receive in each performance we had worked hard every day, especially to Ma’am angie Dela Cruz of the athletics department who pushes us to perform on major competi-tions and allows us to use the gym for our improvement.

EVeRY aFTeRnoon, JUST when the high school students are dismissed from their classes, thunderous sounds stir from the football field. The beats reverberate throughout the four walls of San Beda alabang, and for a short while the Bedan community is shaken. activity

in school slows down to a crawl as the sounds drown out the hustle and bustle of high school students going home and law students coming in. alarms from a few vehicles in the parking lot set off to the deafening activity coming from the red booters’ stomping grounds. These are not earthquake drills or weather disturbances; these are simply the routine training sessions of a few loud and proud Bedans in the College. But it wasn’t always like this. in a span of three semesters, these Bedan percussionists have gone through a lot of ups and downs. let’s take a look at where they started so we can better appreciate how far they have gone.

In the beginning like all great things, the Red lion Pep Band came from small beginnings. The band is ac-tually an offshoot of the Bataleon de leon Rojo, (the former name of the Red lion Pep Squad) an organization that was founded in 2004 by Bedan pioneers James Tolentino, ian John Palma and other student leaders of their time. The years that followed were years of struggle and triumph as the Bataleon strived to instill school spirit in alabang. while the cheerleaders had its highs and lows through its joining of various cheering competitions, the drummers were at the sidelines, visible only whenever they were needed and not as a mainstay component in the College.

Despite the best efforts of its founders, the Bataleon reached its lowest point in 2010 as most of its successors were not able to live up to the efforts of its predecessors. eventually, most of the drummers left the struggling organization, and by 2011, only one drummer was left in the person of Jason Jay nulla, and became the ‘Chief’ by default. Jason, who has roots in the SBCa high School Pep Band, carried on despite being literally a ‘one-man band.’ with him at the helm, the band underwent a drastic reform. “after most of the members left in 2011, i was thinking about how i can get the band back on its feet and im-prove it,” Jason says.

Starting from scratch During the end of aY 2010-2011, Jason recruited his clos-est friend from San Beda high School, aaron Tom Silvestre and an-other friend, Marco angelo Cabrera to jumpstart the nearly-dead drumming division of the College. The exodus of his fellow drummers turned out to be a blessing in disguise because by the beginning of the next academic year, Jason was able to start from scratch and re-cruit more dedicated Bedans to their fold. They even recruited those with no background in drumming, but nevertheless brimming with school spirit. Soon enough, the drummers of the CaS slowly but surely worked their way toward recognition by performing in events such as the SBCa Ruby anniversary Kick-off, annual Pep Rally, opening of the 13th and 14th Season of the national Collegiate athletic association (nCaa) South, and many other events. aside from this, the drummers also established ties with the SBCa high School Pep Band in line with their motto of “one band, one sound.” They also recruited the services of renowned Bedan alumnus, high school pep band moderator and fit-ness coach luis Carlo San Juan. among those in the know, it is common knowledge that the relationship between the high school and college pep squads and drummers were shaky at best, but Jason and his drum-mers set aside their pride and prejudice in order to bring the band to the next level – a bold move that none of their predecessors did. The band also imposed stricter policies and fixed training schedules for would-be aspirants and implemented a hierarchal struc-ture of officers, regulars and seniors – a system emulated from their brethren from San Beda Mendiola. Speaking of Mendiola, the dru-mmers of alabang pushed the envelope further by creating ties with their brother bandmates from the Manila-based school. During the height of the nCaa Manila’s Seasons 87 and 88, the Red lion Pep Band sent a contingent to their fellow Bedan bands from Mendiola and Rizal

during the Red Cubs and Red lions basketball games at the Smart araneta Coliseum, the Filoil Flying V arena and the SM Mall of asia arena, effectively establishing rapport with them. “i’m happy to have met our alabang college band members,” says Prof. Michael John Rubio, moderator of the SBC Band in Mendiola. in return, the San Beda Bands of Mendiola and Rizal were invited during the 2011 and 2012 SBCa Pep Rally. The ties did not end there, as the three bands still communicate and get together every now and then for events in and out of San Beda – a true testament to Bedan Brotherhood. “Distance will never be a hindrance to our unity,” says aidan Cervantes, SBC Mendiola Band internal vice president.

Beating the odds The drummer’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by the school administrators. By the second semester of aY 2011-2012, the pep band was officially recognized by the College as a separate and autonomous organization. The administration was also generous in grant-ing the band’s request for newer equipment that will certainly benefit future generations of Bedan drummers. after only one school year, the Red lion Pep Band has finally established itself as one of the most passionate and hard-working student athletes in campus by their constant presence in school events and undying support for the different sports teams of the CaS. “with our dedication to the band and love for San Beda, varsity status is not far from real-ity. But of course, we are taking everything in stride and accomplishing things one step at a time,” says Jason. and although they remain in the background drumming and cheering as the unsung heroes of the game, the Red lion Pep Band will always strive in uplifting the ánimo of the Bedan community south of Manila. m

ters are gradually garnering victory for the alma mater. SBCa’s tennis players have recently been competing individually inside and outside the school, catching the atten-tion of the people. Despite having only four members, the team man-ages to strive hard with each member burning with passion in every game. “last year di namin nakuha ang championship [nCaa-South] dahil sa palagay ko medyo kulang kami sa prep-aration yet i think hindi sapat ‘yung best na ibinigay namin that season. But for this season we will have to get the champion-ship dahil mula ng nagsimula ang tennis team ‘yun ang goal namin, [ang mag-champion]!” said ericson Marquez, captain of tennis team. as the saying goes, practice makes perfect; and the Red netters definitely use this saying as their mantra. in train-

making it to the women’s national Collegiate athletic association’s championship in a clean sweep fashion and twice-to-beat standing at the eliminations of women’s Colleges Sports association in 2010, the lady spikers are set to sustain the momentum. Ryan Jeorge Sucaldito, head coach of the SBCa-women’s Volleyball Team, says that they should make the best out of what the team has in terms of skills and abilities. with 13 players currently on hand and barely five of which are the old players, “rebuilding” the Bedan animo in his new team is what coach Ryan aims to do. “look at the weaknesses. The team does not depend on proper training alone for them to attain their goal; their passion for the game keeps them go-ing. “This is what i’m trying to tell my players. no matter how good you are in training, you should have the passion to continu-ously improve your game,” Zafra says. When YoU ThinK of a team with bad-minton as a sport usually the first thing that comes to mind is the shut-

The SBCa Badminton Varsity Team, however, would like to defy such presumptions. alvin Zafra, the coach of SBCa Bad-minton Varsity Team explains, “we have to consider plenty of skills first before getting involved in this kind of sports.” a badminton player himself for over ten years, Zafra also acknowledges that it is a rigorous sport just like basketball and volleyball and not simply “paluan lang sa park.” The members of the team are re-quired to jog around the court for five to eight rounds, do whole body stretching, run drills which focus on the players’ cardio and legs and execute foot works before the actual bad-minton training begins. Their trainings are scheduled during Sundays so instead of lying around at home, the players are on the court, exercising their minds to think faster and smash every shuttle-cock that come their way; and prove to eve-ryone that just because they are a badminton team, it does not mean they experience any less difficulty. The SBCa Badminton Varsity team was formed in 2011 and has yet to hold a title in their name. But Zafra believes that with the current roster of good players and those that

The football club is a first for the CaS. hyped up by the burning passion to score a goal for San Beda ala-bang, this team is aiming to compete in big events to rep-resent SBCa. The Red Booters have decided to strengthen their bond, by starting out as a club and not as an official varsity team. according to Marin, their goal is “to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie” with one another. The football club has already caught much at-tention and has already acquired a list of names through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. while a training field is quite out of their reach by the time they had set things out, these Bedan football players still continue to gather spirited athletes to participate for the meantime. as they strive to make their club an official var-sity team, the president makes it a point to keep the club intact, by instilling the club’s proverb “play with your feet and talk with your heart” to his teammates. m
