7 April 2016 Issue 11/2016 The DHS Herald We ended the term on a high last month and it is with this momentum that we have started term 2. We have a very busy term ahead of us, but we will not want to have it any other way. Remember; “a busy school is a good school”. We had a very successful 150 th Rugby Day at the end of the term and I have received a number of compliments from Old Boys, supporters, participating schools and members of the public about the day and the way it was organised. What pleased me most were the compliments we received about the behaviour, appearance and manners of the DHS boys. They are a credit to the school and are continuing with the DHS legacy created by all the boys who walked the corridors of this great school. During the break we held our 150 th Hockey and Basketball Festivals. Both went off extremely well and our boys played their part in making both events memorable ones. The Basketball men continued to dominate all opposition in SA and again won the Festival, beating College comprehensibly in the finals. Our 1 st Hockey and Rugby teams then travelled to St Stithians to participate in their Easter Tournament. Our Hockey men found the opposition tough, but it must be remembered that they played very strong Hockey schools. Our Rugby boys played From the Head Master’s Desk well and they were picked the “surprise team” of the Festival. They won two of their three matches against strong teams and it could easily have been 3 out of 3. Against Bishops they squandered a 17 point lead to lose by three, courtesy of a penalty kick after the final whistle had gone. In the main game on Saturday we left it to the last 3 minutes to score two tries against the hosts to beat them. It was good to see so many Old Boys supporting us on the day. On Monday we beat a strong St Andrew’s College team 31-17. I want to use this opportunity to also stress the importance of this term to our boys and parents. It is an Exam term and boys cannot afford to waste academic time. It is important to work from day one and not leave things to the day before a test or exam is written. We have a number of exciting events in our 150th calendar this term. Please diarize all the festivities and join us in celebrating 150 years of excellence! The DHS 150th Hockey Festival wasa huge success as the level ofhockey played was exceptional.Along with the Durban basedteams, schools fromJohannesburg, Cape Town andMpumalanga participated. TheFestival was run from 19 March to21 March. Even though considered“non-competitive matches” theintensity and pace at which theboys played suggested anythingbut that. Twelve games were played on thefirst two days and six on the lastday. A special thanks must go outto the DHS Old Boys team whotook part in the Festival andshowed the youngsters that theystill have what it takes even ...though two games a day was a bitof a strain for them. The opening fixtures sawtraditional rivals DHS andGlenwood both claim impressivewins to get the ball rolling. Thestand out teams of the weekendwere St David’s (JHB), Jeppe(JHB) and Michaelhouse (PMB) as

they ended off with 4 wins eachout of the 5 games they played. Overall, all the boys, staff andparents from across the countryhad fun and enjoyed not only thehockey on the field but thecamaraderie and new friendships made off the field. A very bigthank you must go out to everyonewho worked so hard to make thisFestival a success, and also to theschools that took part, to theparents, boys and coaching staffwithout whom none of this wouldhave been possible; and finally to DHS for hosting this Festival in thistheir 150th year. We look forward to seeing all of you again and thefuture of hockey in South Africalooks bright.

150th : DHS Basketball International Tournament This year DHS celebrated both its 150th anniversary and the 15th year of existence of the DHS BasketballInternational Tournament. Thisannual Tournament is one thatmany young men from differentwalks of life like to participate inas it gathers all the talent in thecountry and across the borders ofSouth Africa. The DHS Basketball 1st Team were under pressure to keep theirwinning streak of tournaments asthey had already clinched 2 championships. The team startedon high note as they had to faceChristian Brother College fromZimbabwe. They played both endsof the floor, grabbing rebounds, pushing the ball on fast breaks andcommunicating as a team. DHSmanaged to outclass the visiting team as they could not findanswers; final score 99-44. The next game was against TheGlen of Pretoria. The team fromup North came to the Tournamentwith a better side. The hostingteam did not stop where theystarted from, shooting inside toperimeter shots, with Liam andSicelo cleaning up the boards.Guards dominated the oppositionfrom slick crossovers to 3 pointersthat were coming from allcylinders of the courts and dunks;DHS made a statement that theirdefence was as solid as a rock.DHS beat The Glen 96-44. On the second day the hostingteam played Northwood School; agame they won convincingly, minimizing the opposition fromreaching 40. Final score 92-35. Quarter Finals: DHS met St Alban’s for the 2nd

time, having met at St John’sduring the round robin gameswhen DHS won convincingly. Thisturned out to be a different ballgame as the visiting team playedsolid zone defence, not allowingthe home team to penetrateinside, giving them outside shotsas the visiting team were 4/17 on

the perimeter. St Alban’smanaged to restrict home team;final score 55-26. Semi Finals: A battle of KZN teams with DHSplaying Kearsney College. DHSstarted like a house on fire, withBrian Cele shooting 3s and gettinga fast break in a space of 3minutes. The team looked soorganised from ball rotation, shooting out of the perimeter, even Liam Lynes finding hisrhythm out of the perimeter.Bench (Latrell Beukes and SamKim Kayembe) contributed onshooting out of the perimeter;Latrell, who came as the 6th man, controlled the game and madesure that the instructions werewell followed. DHS won this gamein the 1st half where they dominated the opposition on bothends of the floor. Final score:106-66 Final: DHS vs Maritzburg College When these teams play everything stops ... whether in PMB or inDurban. Both teams are wellknown for producing good qualityplayers. From the tip off Collegeshowed that they were on businessdefensive wise as both teamsstruggled to score for a period of 2minutes. College played zone defence; after realising theweakness of the zone they startedswinging the ball to make thedefence to open up and createspaces. They were caught on foul

trouble as DHS were swinging the ball; as soon as the defence collapsed they would kick the ball out of the perimeter shooting outside and pushing the ball inside onto Dzingwa and Lynes. Meanwhile, on the other side Masondo and Whitelaw were trying to penetrate on the host’s tight defence. The visiting team had some good movement on baseline inbound. DHS were pushing the ball to Kalonji and Lufungula. The 2nd half contained the highlight ofthe Tournament when Lufungula set a screen and Cele managed to slick in and dunked on Masondo; the crowd went wild as you do not see this level of play at High School. Final score DHS 86-44. DHS were crowned the 2016 Champs. They were unbeaten this term, winning 3 tournaments and all their domestic games. The team wrapped up the basketball season on a good note, breaking records during its 150th

anniversary. Results: Quarters: DHS vs St Alban’s 55-26 College vs The Heritage 52-35 Kearsney vs Christian Brother77-26 KES vs DHS Cubs 54-34 Semis: Maritzburg College vs KES 59-58 DHS vs Kearsney 105-66 Finals: DHS vs Maritzburg College 86-44

St Stithians Easter Festival : DHS 1st XV Rugby DHS vs Bishops The DHS 1st XV produced one ofthe finest first half displays ofrugby against their favouredcounterparts from Cape Town,Bishops, at the St Stithians Easterfestival in Johannesburg.Attacking the line and runningfrom deep, they interlinkedwonderfully to produce threescintillating tries from theirbackline to take an unprecedented17-0 lead at half time. However, what was arguably theirbest 1st half performance wasfollowed by their worst 2nd halfdisplay. DHS conceded early andonce Bishops had their tails up itbecame very difficult to stem thetide. DHS could not retainpossession in the 2nd half andBishops began to set up phaseafter phase, ultimately tiring outour defence. Line breaks fromtheir outside backs led to furthertries from the Cape Town team.Although DHS got one back in the2nd period through Cham Zondeki,it ended in heartbreak for theHorseflies as a last second penaltywas converted to give Bishops a27-24 win on the day. Although a bitter loss, much hopecan be found in that first halfdisplay, where interlinkingbetween scrumhalf SaneleNohamba and flyhalf Gert Coetzeeopened up numerous holes in thedefence. Full back Cham Zondekiscored two stunning tries and pacyflanker Phendulani Buthelezianother. A devastating loss, butmuch to be proud of. DHS vs St Stithians College It was first and foremost a greatadvert for schoolboy rugby as DHSran out to play the hosts StStithians in the main game at theSt Stithians Festival, which, evenfor the neutral, proved to be anabsolute nail biter! Fuelled by the 18 000 strongcrowd, the St Stithians boysshowed determination and gutsand put the Horseflies under

pressure from the start. DHSstruggled to maintain control ofthe ball and could not find theirgroove throughout the 1st half. The Saints pack started to assumecontrol and found small gains upfront. Saints scored tries throughmaintained pressure in the DHS22m, much to the delight of thehome crowd. DHS managed asingle try in the 1st half but couldnot assert any authority on theimpassioned performance fromSaints who, even after the break, ran into an unassailable 16-5 lead. However, with 4 minutes on theclock the entire game seemed toturn on its head as DHS started toplay with a desperation seldomseen in the game. This possessionled to a try that was built throughmore than ten phases, with propSean Barnes eventually crashingover to make the scores 16-12with 30 seconds remaining. DHS were buoyed by the score andwere motivated to not succumb toanother close loss. From theensuing kick-off fielded deepinside their half, DHS began to gothrough the phases, intent onsecuring a last gasp victory. Schoolmoved the ball across the fieldusing their pace to exploit thetiring Saints defenders and after along passage of play the ball wasreleased to 8th man, MatthewHamilton, who burst through a gapinside the Saints 22m andoffloaded delicately to hooker,Luthando Jojo, who crashed overfor a last second try. DHS celebrated a stunning victory,it was a big occasion for theDurban based side as they beganto realise the quality of talent intheir depths. The victory gavethem a renewed belief that theycan win from any situation. Itcertainly felt like a massive hurdlehad been mounted and the teamlooks inspired to go on andachieve greater things this year. DHS vs St Andrew’s College The DHS 1st XV were looking tobuild on their last-second win

against St Stithians when they took on St Andrew’s College from Grahamstown in the early game on Easter Monday. It was billed to be a tight affair but turned out to be the most complete performance from the Durban based team. A phenomenal 3 tries in the 1st half took DHS to an unassailable lead at the break. DHS were intent on running the ball, scoring tries even from their own goaline. Cham Zondeki opened the scoring when he played a perfectly timed inside pass to wing, Luthando Buthelezi, who offloaded in the tackle back to Zondeki who was put in an one-on-one with the St Andrew’s fullback. There was only ever going to be one winner in that situation as Zondeki flat-footed hisopponent and ran in under the posts. A great break from blindside flanker, Phendulani Buthelezi, led to the second try as SA Water Polo player and 8th man, Matthew Hamilton, picked up from the ruck and skirted down the blindside to score a sneakily worked try. However, the try of the half came from a turnover on the DHS tryline when the ball was shifted toflyhalf, Sanele Nohamba, who stepped two opponents before running down the field to give toan in-space Phendulani Buthelezi, who stepped the fullback and scored the try of the game. Although St Andrew’s mounted sporadic comebacks, the DHS attack just looked toooverwhelming on the day for the Grahamstown based private school. It rounded off an excellent festival for the Horseflies who recorded two fine victories and a narrow defeat which could have been easily avoided. The young team appeared to come of age at the festival which bodes well for the rest of the season.
