With winter approaching, as well as the nights cuddled up with the doona warm in bed and hot yummy soups, coughs and colds also raise their nasty heads. Here a few helpful winter 9ps:
The Winter Lurgy By Dr Nicole Avard
• Be prepared-‐ Studies show that having adequate levels of zinc and Vitamin D is important for good immune func9ons. Have you had yours checked?
• Treat early-‐ if you become unwell with sore throat, nasal conges9on, headache or cough sugges9ve of an upper respiratory tract infec9on it is always be&er to start treatment early rather than soldier on.
• Common sense is best – Most upper respiratory tract infec9ons are caused by viruses. An9bio9cs are usually not helpful in reducing the severity or length of illness, except in a few circumstances such as streptococcal tonsilli9s or if you have a chronic lung condi9on. The best treatment is rest, to drink up to 2L of water a day and use analgesia for headache and sore throat. A recent analysis of studies show that administra9on of greater than 75mg of zinc /day can shorten the course of upper respiratory tract infec9on. The evidence is also strong for the use of
Echinacea. Vitamin C lacks good evidence which maybe partly due to under dosing. You can take up to 1000mg/hour depending on bowel tolerance.
• Be absent not present-‐ it has been shown that going to work when you are sick is less produc9ve that staying home to rest. Employers observed that when employees were sick they were more likely to make mistakes and also spread infec9on to other workers. So, it is ok to stay home and rest and recover.
ITH stocks a range of herbal and homeopathic products which if used early we find helps reduce the severity and length of the illness. Please call recep9on if you would
like to purchase. Our Products Include:

What is the Cranial Rhythmic Impulse? By KaMa Twyford
It is a subconscious rhythm in your body that reflects your state of Health. The cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI) is a 9ny breath like movement present normally in the whole body. It is a con9nuous wave of expansion and contrac9on of all the 9ssue together, that sums up how well your body has adapted to past and present traumas. In a healthy individual the CRI gets started with the head being squeezed through the birth canal at birth. Ajer the compression of the skull comes the first expansion phase, that then sets up the rhythm. Mechanical interference at birth and even a Caesarean Sec9on can impose certain tensions on the body that then does not allow the rhythm to be properly present. That in turn can affect the baby’s sleep cycle, diges9ve cycle and also motor development. Even the release of growth hormones can be reduced, if the CRI is weak. The CRI is a diagnos9c tool to assess the body’s state of adapta9on in general, as well as a way of helping the body to regain more healing capacity. An osteopathic cranial treatment is a very gentle form of treatment that can benefit a wide range of pa9ents. Many babies have been helped with sleeping issues as well as with diges9ve issues. Kids with behavioural issues or chronic infec9ons, ie ear infec9ons, can also benefit. In adults, assessing the CRI can shed more light on reasons why their health is deteriora9ng and they are not feeling as energe9c as before. The Osteopath can feel which body parts are not “breathing internally” as they should and can then help the body let go of the internal tensions related to past traumas. Once the CRI is properly present, the body has more healing capacity to start the journey of recovery. If you are wondering how well your body is moving internally, why not come in for a cranial check up. You do not need to be ill to benefit from a cranial treatment. In fact, preven9on is be&er than cure. So with the colder weather present already, a cranial treatment could be a very natural way of allowing your body to work be&er internally and hence boos9ng your immune response.
Our Osteopaths, Ka9a Twyford and Lisa Vaughan are both experienced and well qualified to help you find out more about your cranial rhythmic impulse. You do not need any referrals; just ring to make an appointment.

Winter Warming , the Healthy Way By Michelle Skidmore
Oh baby its cold outside.... Time to get out those winter woollies and ugg boots and hibernate. Unfortunately with this weather also comes less exercise, comfort ea9ng and carbohydrate cravings and before you know it a few kilos have crept on, sound familiar?? Its also a 9me of year when most of us pick up one or two colds, or worse the flu, so what can we do to help combat winters health challenges.
• A good hearty breakfast to kickstart the day and your metabolism. Reach for the porridge with added LSA or chia seeds, or eggs with spinach and tomato.
• Menu plan and be prepared, keep your freezer stocked for those busy 9mes. Doesn’t ma&er what you are making, double the ingredients and put the lejovers in the correct por9on sizes in your fridge.
• Soup, soup and more soup. A wonderful, warming healthy comfort food, really there is nothing be&er on a cold day than to tuck into a great big bowl of steaming soup. Best of all its simple and you don’t need a recipe, just add vegetables, beans & legumes or organic chicken to some stock and let the stove top do the rest.
• My favourite at the moment is carrot, sweet potato and chickpeas or what I call the ‘crisper soup’, you know whatever you have lej over in the fridge at the end of the week in a pot with stock & herbs.
• Dust off the slow cooker and have dinner prepared while you are at work. Just remember to always serve with some steamed green vegetables to balance the meal out.
• To ward off colds and sniffles add plenty of garlic, onion and leeks to your meals for extra flavor and powerful an9oxidants. They are well known for their an9-‐bacterial ac9on, promote a healthy liver and boost our metabolism.
• Include a wide variety of vegetables every day, think of a rainbow on your plate – carrots, sweet potato, capsicum, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, green beans, kale, zucchini, corn – colour!!!
• Keep hydrated, although its harder to drink water during winter we s9ll need it just as much to help flush our toxins and keep our kidney healthy. Plus all that cold and wind outside and the extra hea9ng inside really dries out our skin.

• Fish – a great lean protein its also full of essen9al Omega 3 fats that help protect our skin, important for our brain func9on and memory and an important part of any weight management and healthy lifestyle regime.
• Keep your snacks in check – instead of high calorie, nutrient deficient white flour and sugary products, go instead for nuts and seeds, a piece of fruit, boiled egg, cup of fresh vegetable soup to keep you going between meals.
