RECENT HIGHLIGHTS TCDSB SCHOOLS SKYPE WITH CARDINAL COLLINS During Catholic Education Week, students from across various TCDSB schools including St. Theresa Shrine, Blessed Cardinal Newman, St. Albert and Jean Vanier had the opportunity to SKYPE with His Eminence, Cardinal Collins. It was a great experience to engage students while demonstrating the use of technology. Students learned about some of the Cardinal’s responsibilities and what led him to choose his path in life. Each of the students prepared two questions to pose to the Cardinal. Cardinal Collins urged the students to take time for personal prayer and reflection- a message that resonated with the students. Alyssa, a grade 6 student at St. Theresa Shrine said she will always remember this experience because she wrote about it in her diary. She liked that Cardinal Collins told the students that he enjoys reading in his spare time. She was also delighted to hear that the Cardinal likes to take walks in his neighbourhood and visit his local Tim Horton’s for a coffee and doughnut. All of the students were thrilled and blessed by this experience. As a school board devoted to faith centred learning, the students were both enriched and blessed by this experience and reminded of the wonderful Catholic community in which they live. “I think the experience was interesting because I truly never thought I would meet the Cardinal and hear his opinions.” Jackie, St. Albert “Speaking to Cardinal Collins was a very good experience for me and my fellow classmates. His answers about his personal life gave us very inspiring information. He serves as a great Catholic role model for us.” Kushal, Jean Vanier “At first I felt nervous, but he was so nice and I felt like he became a friend.” Megan, grade 3 St. Theresa Shrine “I got to meet the person in charge of the Church. This is good because I love the Church, I really want to be an altar boy and I love to pray.” Gabriel, grade 1, St. Theresa Shrine

LORETTO COLLEGE SCHOOL DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC The Junior Band Program at Loretto College is doing very well this year with well over 30 members ranging from novice to experienced players recruited from the grade nine and ten programs. The girls performed in the annual TCDSB Music Festival on Wednesday, May 2nd at St. Michael’s College School and at the Canada’s Wonderland Band Festival on Friday, May 18th

All three bands: the Jr. Concert Band, Sr. Concert Band and the Jazz Orchestra joined forces on May 17

. The staff at Loretto College is very pleased with their overall progress to date and they truly believe that this is the best sounding Junior Band L.C.S. has ever had.

th

to host “BANDFEST.” Bandfest was considered a defining moment in the history of the school’s music program. Alumni of the L.C.S. music program joined current students to deliver some very demanding yet entertaining numbers for this event. It was an amazing performance!

The Senior Concert Band is having one of their best years to date! Over the past three years the level of skill and dedication to the program has grown by “leaps and bounds”. The Jazz Ensemble has been rather busy since their debut last June at the Rex Hotel as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival. They also performed at the Mill Pond Art Gallery in Richmond Hill on May 20th

, 2012. Of the sixteen members, half of these exceptionally talented ladies are “alumni” members of L.C.S. who enjoy playing at different venues throughout the city. The other half of the band will soon be graduates of L.C.S. – what a unique and awesome experience for these girls!

ST. BARNABAS GIRLS ATTEND THE YOUNG WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

Twenty grade 7 and 8 girls from St. Barnabas Catholic School, along with Mrs. Gordon, attended the Young Women’s Conference on Monday, April 30th

at the Holiday Inn Kitchener. Students explored career opportunities in the skilled trades by participating in five Q&A sessions lead by women working in construction, industrial, service, motive power, and technology.

The students worked closely with their mentors in a fun, timed-competition to design, build and test a structure, powered by wind that would carry a load as far as possible. After this hands-on activity, they headed over to RIM Park, Waterloo to explore the Career Exploration Showcase and watch competitors at the Ontario Technological Skills

Competition. All the girls who participated found this experience most rewarding. “I loved the Young Women’s Conference. I got to learn so much in such a fun, educational way. I loved hearing about other women’s experiences in the trades. Overall, it was a fun day and I would recommend it to all other young women interested in the skilled trades.” – Grade 8 student “I got to learn a lot about the skilled trades and the many career pathways I can take in the future. It was interesting to hear what the women had to say. It was a great experience. I am looking forward to a skilled trade job.” – Grade 8 student

“There were many skilled trades represented and many experiences. It was really good.” – Grade 7 student “I really enjoyed the experience. I’m really interested in having a job in the service or construction sectors. It was a good experience.” - Grade 8 student “Before I went to the Young Women’s Conference, I wasn’t that interested in careers in that path. Now I am certainly interested in following that career pathway.” - Grade 7 student ST. FRANCIS DE SALES CATHOLIC SCHOOL WALKS FOR AUTISM On Tuesday, May 8th

, 2012, during TCDSB’s Catholic Education Week, St. Francis de Sales School took to the streets in support of Autism Speaks Canada. Students, teachers, parents, community members and the local trustee, Sal Piccininni, made their way along Jane Street in a 3 K walk, holding up signs and banners in an effort to bring awareness to autism and its effect on families. The students of St. Francis de Sales look forward to this event annually, and express a sincere commitment to supporting this worthy cause.

The kick-off to the annual Walk-a-Thon began in the school gymnasium. Guest speaker, Kim Dixon, Events Manager for Autism Speaks Canada in Ontario, presented the top three pledge-earning students with prizes. Kim also accepted the school’s donation of $1050.00 for Autism Speaks Canada. “Since its inception in 2005, Autism Speaks has been dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism. Autism Speaks is also committed to raising public awareness about autism and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.” (www.autismspeaks.org) Because St. Francis de Sales cares, scientists are a step closer to the day when no parent hears the words, “Your child has autism”. Many thanks to the staff in the DD ISP class for spearheading this initiative annually.

TCDSB STUDENTS SHINE AT CIMA MAYOR'S SCHOOL CRICKET TOURNAMENT Congratulations to Daniel Singh of Father Henry Carr and Gayan Ferdinands of Cardinal Newman for achieving special recognition in the inaugural CIMA Mayor's School Cricket Tournament.

Daniel and Gayan have emerged as the top two bowlers in the tournament held May 14th to 17th

at the Eglinton Flats Park, G. Ross Lord Park, Centennial Park and Sunnybrook Park.

The CIMA Mayor's School Cricket Tournament was initiated by Mayor Rob Ford and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants as a way to extend its support, engage youth and contribute to the community and the sport of cricket. Cricket helps young people develop sport and leadership skills, and encourages them to stay involved in healthy activities. Cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in Toronto. Played in more than 100 countries across the world, cricket is part of the cultural heritage of thousands of Torontonians. It is becoming increasingly popular with school-age children and youth across the city. "We are pleased to support the development of this sport in our schools," said Ann Andrachuk, Chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. "With our continued focus on student achievement and well being, we take very seriously our role in promoting healthy and active living starting from an early age. This includes supporting the growth of athletics in our schools, as we know that a student's educational experience is not limited to what is learned in the classroom setting." The final games of the tournament will be held on June 2nd

at Summerlea Park.

ST. ANTHONY COLLECTS MILK BAGS FOR HAITI As a Lenten/Easter project, St. Anthony Catholic School collected the outer plastic bags of milk bags. The bags were then sent to a local high school where they were woven into sleeping mats for the many homeless people in Haiti who lost homes in the earthquake. Some of the mats will be used as hospital beds. Not only will we be helping Haiti, but we will be helping our earth by reducing waste and recycling for a worthy cause. Our Milk Bag Campaign has been so successful that we will continue to collect bags and make this an ongoing project here at St. Anthony’s.

Gayan Ferdinands was given special recognition for being named best bowler at the International Cricket Association Americas Under 15
