Dear Families,

Staff have been diligently preparing student reports, getting all the

assessments in, and marking assignments. Students have been

responding to the challenges. Parents too need to be prepared for

parent/teacher conferences. Research shows that children whose

parents are involved in their education are more likely to be successful

in their education. Don’t miss this opportunity to support your child’s

education! Interviews are just around the corner and it is important to

be prepared and informed prior to meeting with your child’s teacher.

Great Questions to Ask:

• What does my child do well?

• What skills does my child need to develop further?

• What activities can we do at home to strengthen those skills?

• Does my child do his/her homework and assignments efficiently and

conscientiously?

• Is my child facing any struggles in class not related to her/his

schoolwork?

• Is my child receiving additional help?

• How does my child get along with other students?

• What is the best way to contact you if we have more questions?

Your involvement in the parent/teacher conference dialogue plants the

seed of success for your child.

Yours in Partnership,

C. Nazar

SHOW YOUR LOVE

TO THE WORLD

Last year Sacred

Heart's Valentine

Cookie Gram Campaign

raised enough money

for us to donate 10

goats for families

overseas. This year

during the month of February, Sacred

Heart’s Me to We Team will once again be

selling peanut-free Valentine Cookie Grams

for $1.oo each. Orders will be taken from

Tuesday February 2nd until

Tuesday February 10th. The cookies will be

delivered to students in their classrooms

on Wednesday February 11th. In support of

Free the Children, for every $50.00 raised,

Sacred Heart will purchase a goat for a

family overseas. A gift of a goat can

Page 3: Sacred Heart Catholic School - Toronto Catholic District ... · Ruffin Abbott, successful businessman and landowner in Toronto, Lincoln Alexander, first black Member of Parliament

flourish into a herd, providing an entire

family with nutritious milk and an income

that can be used to pay for school fees or

medicine. It can help turn a home farm into

a business and lift a family out of poverty.

This year, Show Your Love and help us to

create change in the world. Ready, Set,

GOAT!

NEWS FROM OUR LEGO CLUB

During lunch M-W students come together

in Ms. Grupe’s classroom to enjoy fun with

Lego. They work together to build and

create stuff and along the way they learn

about friendship, collaboration, and getting

along. Here’s what some of them have to

say about the club:

I like being in the Lego club because it

improves my sociability and it drives my

creativity up high. You can build stuff

without instructions and you can call it your

own in the end which is what I like. It took

me 2-3 weeks to build this ship and I had a

lot of fun doing it, it was hard work and

I'm glad kids are always willing to help and

join in. Harrish Gr. 4

Before Lego Club, I didn’t think of myself

as a master builder, and now I am. I am

confident in things I build. I have been

making a lot of friends since joining the

club, including Jacob who is in Grade 3! I

never knew Jacob until we started working

together. It's great to know kids from

other grades. Andre Gr 5

Lego club is so cool! There's always a Lego

episode playing while we build and lots of

pieces. I get excited when it's Monday

because that's my turn to come.

Sometimes kids from older grades come at

the same time. The older kids are very nice

to me and I like working with them. I'm not

as shy anymore. I can’t wait to work on the

next project with different kids!

PHYS ED DANCE ACTIVITIES

This month students in Phys Ed will be

participating actively in dance

activities. Students are

often given the task of

coming up with their

own movements and

balances. Their

creative movements

have been interesting

and impressive.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT

Father will be here on Wednesday Feb 10

at 1:00 to give us our ashes. All parents

are welcome. Ash Wednesday also marks

the first day of Lent. We will endeavor as

a community and as individuals to sacrifice

something and to do good works throughout

the 40 days of Lent.

SACRED HEART SKATES

Skating has

become a favorite

winter tradition at

Sacred Heart.

Our next skate

will be an all

morning affair as

we have booked

both rinks. Our

next community skating date is Friday,

February 5th when our students, staff and

parents will once again be given the

opportunity to polish their skating skills

with some special guests including the

media. Thank you once again to our

generous donor SAKTETOGREAT for

donating skates and helmets.

SNACK PROGRAM MONDAY-FRIDAY!!!

Our snack program will now

run from Mon-Fri. We truly

appreciate all the hard work,

time and effort that goes

into preparing all those

snacks for our students.

YEAR BOOK

The Sacred Heart

Yearbook will be

available in June 2016.

Students can cherish

their Sacred Heart

memories forever. Year-round activities,

events and pictures will be published.

Please place your order as soon as possible

to avoid disappointment. The cost is $20

and it must be pre-ordered. No extra

copies will be available. Complete the order

form with your $20 and submit to your

child’s teacher.

GUIDANCE CORNER High school acceptance/re-direction letters

will be couriered to the elementary schools

during the first two weeks of February and will

be sent to the Grade 8 teacher for

distribution. The Program and Course Calendar

for secondary school is now available for Grade

8 students and parents on the Board

website. Hard copies of this resource will no

longer be distributed to Grade 8 students. You

can access this resource through the links to

Student Success and Guidance & Career

Education at www.tcdsb.org. It includes a wide

variety of important information related to

high school, as well as highlighting the courses

that each of our high schools will be offering

for the coming school year. You may find this a

useful tool in anticipation of course selection

and registration that will take place in early

March.

I have provided a link to an article on the

Learning Skills/Work Habits by Annie Kidder

of People for Education:

http://www.peopleforeducation.ca/pfe-

news/report-cards-are-coming-report-

cards-are-coming/. As the Term 1 Report

Card is sent home and

Parent/Teacher Conferences take place, it is a

good reminder of the importance of

strengthening these 6 skills and the vital role

that parents play in helping their child develop

them. Miss Vincent, Elementary Guidance

Counsellor

DISTRICT REVIEW

On February 2 we will be visited by the

District Review team which will be visiting

classrooms and conferencing with students

to determine how engaged we are with

Learning Goals and Success Criteria.

After the team’s visit they will present to

staff how well we did and what we can do

going forward to ensure that our students

are successful. Learning Goals and Success

Criteria are strategies for learning success

and should be posted in the classrooms.

We look forward to the team’s review of

Sacred Heart and their feedback to us.

Below are descriptions of what the team is

looking for:

Learning goals

Learning goals are brief statements that

describe, for students, what they should

know, understand, and be able to do by the

end of a period of instruction (e.g., a

lesson, a cycle of learning, a unit, a course).

They represent a subset or cluster of

knowledge and skills that students must

master in order to successfully achieve the

overall expectations.

Success criteria

Success criteria describe, in specific terms

and in language meaningful to students,

what successful attainment of the learning

goals looks like. Criteria help students

understand what to look for during the

learning and what it looks like once they

have learned. Quality success criteria make

the learning explicit and transparent for

students and teachers alike. They identify

the significant aspects of student

performance that are assessed and/or

evaluated (i.e., the “look‐fors”) in relation

to curriculum expectations.

‘DnB’ – DANCE AND BEATS CLUB

Sacred Heart is

moving to the

beats during lunch

on Mondays.

Students that are

interested in

learning and

celebrating dance

need only send in their permission form to

Ms Burdi our vocal music teacher. We look

forward to the great sounds and moves of

‘DnB’.
