Captain’s Note

KGNS is our club and, for most, our

second home, where all members

stand equal and nobody is above the

club’s rules and regulations

A belated Merry Christmas to all Christians and Happy New Year to all!

I have been entrusted by the President and the Management Committee to serve as Acting Captain until the next Annual General Meeting and will do my best to uphold that trust. I will begin first by calling on all members of the KGNS family to resolve, in the New Year, to be more friendly and forgiving in our dealings with others in the club.

KGNS is our club and, for most, our second home, where all members stand equal and nobody is above the club’s rules and regulations. These are in place to give order and stability, with penalties for those who stray. However, bye-laws need never be invoked if we can but practise the simple act of caring, of “give and take” and of accommodating one another. For instance, if we feel compelled to voice any dissatisfaction that we may have, the forum for it is not the Golfers Terrace - decorum and code of behaviour dictate that we use proper channels. Let us, therefore, collectively make KGNS different from all other establishments, i.e., a ‘We Care’ club!

For now, our biggest concern is nothing new; it is also about caring, for our courses, and golfers who must contribute by action, and not word, in five simple ways, i.e., replace divots, repair pitch marks, rake bunkers, tread properly on greens and not to litter. Further, with the introduction of Transferable Membership, we are encountering many unfamiliar faces of new members giving rise to operational problems especially at F&B outlets. Accordingly, please take note that:

1. At all F&B outlets, members MUST produce their membership cards upon ordering and not after consuming the food or drinks.2. Membership cards are non-transferable, even among family members.3. Coupons for guests can only be purchased by members who bring in the guests.

Please be mindful that club facilities are for all members and, as such, we should be respectful of ethics governing their use. Towels in the changing rooms, for example, should never be thrown on the floor to wipe the feet or to clean shoes. Footwear should not be placed on the tables or seats and a hair dryer is meant for your the head only.

In closing, permit me to (a) wish all our Chinese members “Gong Xi Fa Cai” on the occasion of the forthcoming Lunar New Year and (b) pose this challenge to all :

“I CARE FOR KGNS”... Do you?

Long-term Golf Course Improvement Strategy

Putra CourseThere are no major problems with the Putra layout and, as

such, it is possible to make very positive, high impact improvements with relatively minor adjustments, centred mainly on bunkers.

Many of the existing bunkers are not visible from the optimum lines of play, exacerbated by the fact that many bunkers are in positions that do not provide the challenge or the strategic play options that they might if they were positioned somewhat better. This is nobody’s fault; the bunkers were built according to the best technology available at the time but now outmoded, both in terms of playing equipment as well as construction standards and techniques.

1) Bunkers. Bunkers are the single best way to make a big positive impact

on the golf course at minimal cost and disruption. Over time, all bunkers on the Putra Course should be rebuilt, some in existing locations and some in new locations, with a few more added. New technology today enables the construction of bunkers with sandy faces that will not wash away in storms -- this makes for bunkers with visible sand and low maintenance. Another issue is the positioning of bunkers so as to provide more challenge to low handicappers and, most importantly, more play options for

On the 9 of November 2009, KGNS engaged KL-based Australian Golf Course Architect Nigel B Douglas, who had in 2007 unertaken the design and supervision of the Putra Buggy Path project, for an overview of both the Putra and Kelana Courses. The exercise is to provide the club with a co-ordinated and long-term strategy of course improvement, the main thrust being that of preservation and enhancement, of the best aspects of our courses, and to isolate and provide strategies to correct any problems with safety, drainage and the like that may affect the ability of the courses to grow and evolve positively into the future.

Proposed course adjustments. all standards of golfers. I.e., encouraging golfers to think carefully about each shot, depending on their position. Currently there are 62 bunkers on the Putra Course, with an extra 10 to be added to bring the course more in line with championship standard. 35 bunkers will remain in the same or similar positions while 37 will be in new positions.

2) Blind Areas. There are a few spots of blind play which need to be improved,

most notably on Holes 1, 6, 9, and 11. to be rectified by shaving some areas of the fairway down to provide better views of the target zones. This will be done in a natural way, so that the feel of the golf holes will be very much similar to what it is currently, except that you will be able to see what you are aiming at!

3) Hole lengthening. In general, the course is long enough for general membership

play but it is always good to have scope to lengthen at least some holes if need be in the future, especially if the club decides to host a major tournament. These options will be detailed in the hole-by-hole diagrams which will be displayed in the club house.

A sample of some typical adjustments on Hole 9 is shown below:

Kelana Course

The Kelana Course presents a totally different set of issues compared to the Putra, situated on what can only be described as a very small site, i.e., at 90 acres, it is some 76 acres smaller than the Putra. The course is very short, at 5,730 metres, par 70, and unfortunately, there are several serious problems with the layout, the most pressing of these being:

Course & Grounds

Unfortunately, there is no way to fix any one of the above without (a) reducing par by several strokes and (b) rendering the Course unviable for anything other than a practice area. The only realistic solution is a holistic one -- re-building to a new configuration of par 71, 5925 metres long with a full-length buggy path. It would then have playing strategies as varied and interesting as the Putra, with all safety and drainage issues solved.

Note also that all holes on the new layout will have a similar amount of space between them that is now enjoyed by existing Holes 16, 18 and 10 (which would be played in the proposed revised layout as new Holes 1, 9 and 5, respectively).

Whilst re-building is unlikely in the short term due to its projected major cost, the overview serves to inform members there is a way in which it can be done successfully in the future.

Editor’s Note: Due to space constraints in Berita Subang, a large scale copy of the Course Improvement Plan and Hole-by-Hole details will be displayed in the Clubhouse for viewing. Members are invited to address any query and/or comment, in writing, to the General Manager.

This offering on the Kelana course is neither as long nor as complicated as say the layout’s 12th hole, a double-dogleg par-5, but without tee-to-green accuracy, it is very capable of ruining a good round.

The 14th is a fairly short, testy par-4 that demands a precise tee shot to find a fairway narrowed a fairly short, testy par-4 that demands a precise tee shot to find a fairway narrowed heavily by trees and out-of-bounds on its right. It is further complicated by an over-water carry when players look to reach the left side of its slim fairway.

Because of its relatively short length, a good drive will put you in near-perfect position to reach its slightly elevated green in regulation.

Be sure to take enough club when approaching its double-green (shared with the 16th hole), as protective bunkers sit to the front left and right centre and it is a deep green.

Club Updates

KGNS Introduction NightThe final in the series for 2009, Introduction Night (5) held on the evening of 22 November saw

the intake of 80 newly-enrolled members into the KGNS family. Of the total inducted, 50 were transferees and the rest were upgrades from the rank of juniors and normal intake from the queue list. As always, KGNS President, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas and members of the Management Committee were in attendance to meet and greet the newcomers. In his welcoming address, the President highlighted the need, on the part of the inductees and their families, for discipline and decorum as pre-requisites for the privilege of joining a premier establishment such as KGNS.

A short video pre-sentation showcased the many golfing, sports and recreational, F&B and other facilities available at the Club to which all were entitled to patronise and enjoy with immediate effect. In the course of the evening, members of the Manage-ment Committee, as well as the KGNS management team, were duly presented to the assembly. For the record, the total membership of KGNS, inclusive of the numbers taken in at Introduction Night (5), now stands at 5,360.

B e r i t a S u b a n g wishes our new members, Selamat Datang and Happy Clubbing!

Members are not permitted to transfer their smart cards to or for use by their spouses and/or children who, as privileged and/or junior members, respectively, qualify to be issued supplementary cards of their own.

Of the rules and regulations governing conduct in Kelab Golf Negara Subang, one, in particular, that is being highlighted here is the proper use of smart (membership) cards. This has been prompted, regrettably, by incidents of blatant disregard and/or ignorance of the rules by members; hence the need to spell out the “do’s and don’t’s” as follows:

below:

Makeover of Multi-Purpose Hall

Artist impression. Artist impression - Interior look.

Plans have been finalised for the renovation and re-structuring of the Poolside Terrace at an approved budget of RM 300,000 and the tender award is expected to be made early in the New Year. All being well, work should commence in February 2010 for a scheduled period of two (2) months and delivery in late March/early April.

The designated scope of works for the terrace, based on a “kopitiam” concept, covers:

The project will include new furnishings, refinished walls, and lightings, 300 x 300 homogeneous tile flooring, improved corridor cosmetics and an inviting outdoor terrace that overlooks the Putra golf course.

At press time of Berita Subang, the renovation is rapidly moving and smoothly so there has been very little inconvenience to the members.

Successful tenderer/contractor Madi Enterprise Sdn Bhd took possession of the MPH on the above-mentioned date and completion of works/hand-over is scheduled for very early 2010, i.e., 4th January. At this writing, works are in progress, the scope of which includes re-flooring and the ubiquitous fresh coat of paint!

With an approved budget of RM 200,000, refurbishment and upgrading works began in earnest at the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) on 23 November 2009. The twin objectives of the makeover exercise were:

New Year’s EveDinner & Dance 2009

This time round, the theme was ‘Glamourous’ and although there were only about 120 members and guests, there was an abundance of fun and joy to be celebrated with re-knowned six piece band “Os Pombos”. The food was fabulous, a sit down 5-course western dinner catered by San Francisco Steak House. Two premium complimentary bottles of wine per table, and sparkling juice as alternatives, were provided to the delight of those who attended the function.

The New Year 2010 brought good luck and cheer to Mr. Jeyalingam’s guest (J089), who waltzed away with the Grand Lucky Draw prize of a 3-day-2-night holiday package to Phuket.

How swiftly time flies when you are having fun, and so it was when we bade farewell to 2009 and ushered in 2010 with a big ‘bang’ at the traditional KGNS

New Year Eve Dinner & Dance. Besides Os Pombos, the audience were entertained by dance

performances by graceful Dancer, Ms. Percy Yeoh and Ika’s Divas. At the stroke of midnight, everyone was on the dance

floor, happy and cheering during the countdown to the oncoming 2010. They were delightfully surprised by a fantastic pyrotechnic display on the stage, while balloons were dropped to herald in the New Year!

The Social Sub-Committee would like to take the opportunity to thank its members for assistance in organising the event and to all KGNS members who have supported and participated in the auspicious New Year Eve Dinner & Dance 2009, making it a successful and memorable one!

Junior Golf

Prior to his victory at the SportExcel Premier-Elite Championship (see July-September issue of Berita Subang), Hisyam had a go at the Singapore Island Country Club Junior Invitational in early December and emerged 4th Overall and 2nd in his division (ages 16-19). Then, before Christmas of 2009, the youngster was back at Kelab Rahman Putra for the Asia Pacific Matchplay where, he remarked, he “did not do too well”.

But, Hisyam got his game together in the New Year to claim top spot (and successfully defended his title!) at the Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit Grand Final played in KGNS on 20 December 2009. At the time of this interview he was preparing for the forthcoming Selangor Amateur National Trials scheduled for 26-27 January 2010. Hisyam, who turns 18 on 31 January 2010, confided that he “practices mostly at school (Hills International College, Brisbane) and touch up on my golf game when I come home”, he said.

And on the mental side of his game, ”I normally take it easy, I do not worry or unnecessarily put pressure on myself over missed putts or poor shots because I have been there before”, he added. “Even in competition, I tell myself it is just another round of golf!”

Now into his final year at high school, Hisyam’s immediate goal is to play college golf and pursue a degree in – “it is a toss-up between law and business management”, he said, but he admits to being inclined towards the latter! In this regard, his sights are on San Diego in the Sunshine State of California, where, weather-wise, golf is playable all year round! Syabas, Hisyam, and on behalf of the KGNS members, Berita Subang wishes you selamat maju jaya in all your future endeavours!

Hisyam Got Game

Fondly known in her circle of family and friends as Nani, junior golfer Ainil Johani Abu Bakar has a penchant for winning – both at home and abroad! Flying national colours at the 2007 SEA Games in Korat, Thailand, the then 18-year old clinched the bronze in the women’s individual golf. Two years on, Ainil again made news in leading the Malaysian charge, with compatriot Gavin Kyle Green, in the 2009 edition of the Games held in Vientiane, Laos on 11

AinilPride of Country & KGNS

December. Then, in collaboration with teammates Kelly Tan and Michelle Koh, the trio took their combined tally of 342 to claim the bronze medal!

Nice going, indeed, for a young talent who, at 9, came under the wing of the KGNS Junior Golf Programme and has not looked back since! With her combination of ambition, competitive spirit and high energy, she is tipped to scale greater heights in the game for which she has a natural affinity. Congratulations, Ainil, as we look forward to more triumphs from you!

Part 2To say the least, for

the last couple of months since his return in Nov- ember 2009, from Brisbane, Australia for the year end holiday, it has been a busy time for KGNS’ No. 1 junior golfer, Mohd Hisyam Abdul Majid.

Junior Golf

Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit 2009 - Grand Finals

In the final reckoning, it was KGNS’s Hisyam Abdul Majid (2) who emerged the Gross Champion of the Group A category. Joining him tn the third place was another KGNS junior, Daniel Loh (2) at four shots back. Wedged in between was runner-up Ng Kok Soon (5) of KGSS. It was KGNS again in Group A (Nett) category where Dinesh Kannen finished third and four shots behind Amirul Ariff (BUCC) and Ang Hao Sern of KGSS. Group B has 3 competitors, with Marianne Chin and Jocelyn Kam, both of KGSS, won first and second place respectively.

The Group C (ages 13-15) saw the bulk (>60%) of the contestants playing their young hearts out! At day’s end, it was BUCC’s Mohamad Asyraf Rosli (5) who pulled ahead with a 72 to win in the Gross category, followed by Rizal Redzuan (9) of KGNS and Mohd Aiman Mohd Nor (9) from KGPA. Firdaus Amiruddin (BUCC) posted the best Nett score with Daniel Durisic (KRPM) and Mohamad Nizar Hadi (BUCC) in tow. An even 8 made up the number in Group D, won by KGPA’s Genevieve Ling (2) and Chin Foong Ling (34) of KGSS in the Gross and Nett categories, respectively.

Overcast skies did little to dampen the competitive spirit of our young golfers at the Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit Grand Finals 2009 staged at Kelab Golf Negara Subang. A field of 73 boys and girls took to the Kelana

Course to vie for top honours in 4 divisions of competition, viz.,

Rules of Golf

Tae Kwan Do

Kindly be informed that the Tae Kwan Do Classes have been temporarily moved to the Squash Courts and will remain there until further notice, due to the on-going renovation of the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Management would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

An outside agency is any person, place, animal or thing that is not part of the match or not on the competitor’s side. This includes any marker, referee, observer, or forecaddie. Wind and water are not outside agencies.

Is a bird, an outside agency? According to the Rule, a live bird is,

but a dead one is regarded as a loose impediment.

The rule provides that if a ball, which has come to rest, is moved by an outside agency, the ball must be replaced before another stroke is played with no penalty incurred.

Remember, the ball must be placed and not dropped - you only drop if you cannot determine where the ball had come to rest.

If your ball in motion hits a dog, bird, rake, etc (an outside agency) and is stopped or deflected, it is called a “rub of the green.” There is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies.

There have been instances on the Putra course, when crows have taken off with golf balls.

The question then becomes: Where must I put the ball back into play? At what point did it come to rest? Obviously it came to rest near the spot the crow picked it up, so the ball must be dropped as close as possible to the actual spot the ball came to rest.

What is an Outside Agency?

1.

2.

If a crow picks up a player’s ball at rest on a green and drops it into a bunker, the crow is an “outside agency” as defined by Rule 18-1. The player shall incur no penalty and the ball shall be replaced on the putting surface of the green, as near as possible to the original spot, before he plays another stroke. At a par-4 hole, part of the green and its adjoining area cannot be seen from the tee. A bunker, fairway and a dry ditch rest in the unseen area. A player plays towards the obscured area and cannot see where his ball comes to rest. When the player nears the green, a monkey is seen running off with a ball in his hand, the monkey throws the ball away and the player identifies it as his ball. Unable to determined where to play his next stroke under Rule 18-1, the player is directed in equity (Rule 1-4) to drop the ball in an area which was neither the most, nor the least, favourable of the various areas where it was equally possible that the ball originally lay.

To treat a ball that cannot be found as moved by an outside agency, you must be virtually certain and all available evidence must be taken into account. In the absence of such evidence, the ball must be treated as lost (Decision 27-1/2.5).

A time-honoured tradition in KGNS is the annual sports and social programme especially for our staff and, for 2009, golf, bowling, badminton and karaoke were the feature edvents, topped by the Annual Dinner and Dance. Golf was first on the menu, held on the morning of 21 December 2009 with 20 teeing off at the Kelana Course on a Strokeplay (System 36 modified) format. Results at a glance:

of shuttlers competed in badminton at a selected sports centre in the city. Karaoke, though, was a home-based affair as both on- and slightly off-key contestants gave of their best in renditions of songs, old and new, to the delight of all.

The highlight of the day was the Dinner and Dance, themed “Back To The 60’s”, held at Dewan Tunku that was colourfully decorated to reflect those magicical years. The evening was a glitzy affair with a full turnout, complete with MC, DJ and music machine, all decked out in their best costumes for the occasion. KGNS President and members of the Management Committee were on hand to join in the festivities.

Bujang Aripin walked away with the grand prize of a 32” LCD TV, in the lucky draws, which included other goodies, a notebook, handphone, flat screen TVs, microwave oven and digital cameras. There was something for everyone as door gifts were given out to all.

By a panel of their peers, Lily Salwana and Wahid Ali were judged the Best Dressed Female and Male, respectively.

All in all, it was memorable affair and “ribuan terima kasih” to the Organisaing Committee, headed by GM, Mohamad Johan Abdullah, for job well done! Till we meet again in 2010!
