1.0 Introduction

This manual provides information on installing and operating your Terra Universal EZ-UP Suspended Frame Modular Cleanroom. Although this installation/operation manual accurately describes the general design of these cleanrooms, individual orders may vary in dimensions and other design specifics. Refer to any attached drawings and/or parts lists for information specific to your order.

2.0 Description Terra Universal’s EZ-UP Suspended Frame Cleanrooms provide low-cost particle control, creating an ISO 7 – ISO 8 environment that covers large spaces. They create the ideal environment for material testing, processing and packaging, as well as enclosing particle-sensitive equipment. Each design is preconfigured to meet a specific cleanliness requirement. The frame is designed to be suspended from the ceiling of the existing building, providing the supporting structure for the vinyl walls. Long, steel beams of various lengths make up the ceiling of the standard enclosure, with predrilled holes for suspension eyebolts. If the enclosure is taller than 9’ (typically in cases where 11’ is needed), a transom assembly will be required a t both ends of the enclosure. The Fan/Filter Units pull air from the outside environment through a HEPA filter and forcefully blow the micro-filtered air into the cleanroom environment. The overpressure created by the FFUs causes air to constantly flow outward from any gaps in the walls, preventing any unfiltered air from entering the cleanroom. These types of cleanrooms will often have a small gap around the entire base of the cleanroom to allow uniform air release.

NOTE

All cleanrooms require some sort of venting to allow air to escape. If the gaps along the floor of the cleanroom are too small to exhaust the air generated by the fan/filter units, then the strips will billow outward. In this case, the strips can be cut shorter to allow additional venting above the floor.

The 40 mil vinyl walls are transparent, flame-resistant, and anti-static. Panels are fused together via RF welding to create the pattern necessary to enclose the cleanroom area. Strip shield entryways are made of 60-mil material, with each strip measuring 8” wide with a 2” overlap. The strip shields attach to the frame by means of the Grip Track mounting system , which offers smooth surfaces and is made of non-contaminating materials.

Each FFU includes a 700 CFM impeller blower (average flow at 100 FPM with filter load) mounted in a powder-coated steel housing with a plenum design that optimizes uniform air velocity across the entire face of the filter. A HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter installed inside the housing is rated 99.99% efficient at 0.3um particles. The filtration medium consists of micro porous polyurethane minipleats held in place by strong, rigid plastic separators that keep the medium from nesting. This design channels airflow with optimal efficiency to reduce resistance. The filter is sealed into the sturdy aluminum frame with a fire-retardant, non-outgassing adhesive. On an optional basis, an ULPA (ultra-low penetration air) filter, rated 99.9995% efficient at 0.12um particles, may be substituted for the HEPA filter. The FFUs are mounted on a powder-coated steel stand for horizontal airflow. The HEPA-filtered airflow should be directed across the most critical work areas and towards an exit point whenever possible to allow air to escape. 2.1 Standard Component List List and quantities may vary, depending on the order: Powder-coated steel frame members Vinyl wall kit Fan/filter units (including power cables) FFU stands and mounting hardware Strip shields (number of strips will vary) Grip Track (length varies) See Section 8.0: Hardware Reference Table for additional components included with your cleanroom order.

3.0 Installation

Handling cleanroom shipping crates, which generally measure over 300 inches long and weigh well over 1,000 pounds, requires at least one forklift or pallet jack. If crates must be moved through narrow aisles or entrances, two forklifts or pallet jacks are recommended, one to support each end.

WARNING

Unloading crates from the truck is much easier if you have a truck-high loading dock. Without such a dock, you will need at least one forklift and a support to brace one end while the forklift is positioned beneath the center of each crate. Several men are required to unload individual components from crates. Before proceeding, carefully lay out all system components in staging area adjacent to the installation site. All system crates include packing lists; uncrate and inspect each component. Any damage should be reported immediately to the shipping company (see Warranty). Please notify Terra immediately in the event of missing parts. 3.1 Recommended Tools

3.2 Site Preparation

Unpack all system components and check for damaged or missing parts (refer to component list/chart on the previous page). Any damage should be reported to the shipping company immediately. Contact Terra Universal if any parts are missing.

Clear a large enough space in the installation area to accommodate the fully assembled frame, the fan/filter assembly, and the vinyl sheeting.

Sweep and clean the floor to minimize the accumulation of debris on the vinyl. You may wish to apply an epoxy coating to

the floor prior to installing the cleanroom.

Ensure the availability of a wall outlet with a dedicated 20A circuit nearby the installation area for powering the fan/filter units.

3.3 Frame Assembly In most cases, the frame members are labeled to indicate the order of assembly. For custom layouts, drawings will be attached at the back of this manual for additional guidance. A. Begin by laying out the frame members in their correct orientations. B. Assemble the frame by sliding together the ends of each frame section. C. After fully inserting a frame member, insert a set screw (Allen head; black) into the welded nut to hold the frame members

in place (See Figure 1). If assembled correctly, the set screws will all face the interior of the cleanroom. Do not fully tighten these set screws until you have assembled the entire frame.

Figure 1. The horizontal frame member slides into the upright and is held in place with set screws (Allen head)

D. After the frame has been completely assembled, square the structure by measuring the diagonal distances from corner-to-

corner. If they are not equal, adjust the frame by pushing on the corners until the frame is square.

3.4 Preparing the Vinyl Walls and the Wire Suspension System

WARNING

Terra assumes no liability for damage or injury resulting from improper installation of the ceiling support system or failure to evaluate the suitability of the ceiling support system.

Wire rope, sleeves, and a crimping tool are provided for installing the suspension system. The provided eyebolts are only for attachment to the frame and should not be used as ceiling/roof anchors. The installer is ultimately responsible for properly securing the suspension wires to the existing structure. A. Locate the predrilled holes for the anchor points along the top of the frame. If provided, refer to the drawings specific to

your system for the exact locations.

B. Make sure that the floor is clean or otherwise covered to protect the vinyl during the following steps.

C. Lay the vinyl pattern over the frame (See Figure 3). To preserve the clarity of the vinyl, be careful when handling to minimize scuffs and damage to its surface. Use a measuring tape to ensure the vinyl is centered on the frame and the side panels will fold downward in the correct locations.

D. Cut a hole in the vinyl at each of the predrilled holes along the top of the frame. The holes should be rounded and just

large enough to allow the provided anchor bolts to pass through.

E. Install the anchor bolts by inserting the threaded bolt from the bottom of the frame, through the vinyl, and then screwing on the anchor point. If installed properly, the anchors will hold the vinyl in place while the structure is raised.

F. With the vinyl secured in place, use vinyl-cutting scissors or a suitable knife to cut along the welded seam at each of the

corners to create the corner flaps. Stop cutting once you reach the edge of the frame to minimize leakage (See Figure 4).

3.6 Installing the Strip Shields

A. Arrange the strips on a clean table, making sure not to scuff or dirty the surface. B. Pop open the Grip Track on the frame by pulling outward from the bottom lip. C. While holding the Grip Track open, lift each strip and hook the gray slider onto the Grip Track as shown in the Figure

below. D. Once all strips are installed in a section of Grip Track, slide the strips into position so that the edges overlap (2” is

recommended). E. Close the Grip Track to lock the strips in position. The Grip Track should snap closed and there shouldn’t be any play in

the cover.

Figure 6. Hook each section onto the Grip Track and close the cover to lock the strips in place

F. Next, fold the corner flaps over the outside of the wall panel to form the “corner” of the walls. Use the provided sheet metal

screws and flat washers to fasten the tops of the flaps to the frame (See Figure 6). Multiple fasteners may be used.

Figure 7. Fold the flaps over the outside and fasten the overlapping layers of vinyl to the frame to secure them in place.

G. In most cases, the weight of the vinyl will prevent the escape of excessive amounts of air through the corner flap. If the

corner billows outward, a single clamp can be added at the bottom of the flap or addit ional fasteners may be used along the length of the flap. Slight leakage of air at the corners is normal and expected for positive pressure cleanrooms.

3.7 Installing Fan/Filter Units

The FFU stand must be anchored after installation to prevent tipping, using either floor anchoring straps or weights.

WARNING

Do not puncture or bend the filter grid on the bottom of the FFU. Do not place the FFU on tools or other objects. Lift the FFU mainly from the corners and sides, not on the grid.

CAUTION

Fan/filter units are typically shipped fully assembled on their stand (in a horizontal configuration). The horizontal FFU stand is designed to accommodate a maximum of two FFUs. If they are crated separately: A. Position the FFU stand in the desired location, just outside of the

assembled cleanroom.

B. Temporarily secure the stand in place to prevent tipping during FFU installation. This can be achieved by placing weights on the feet of the stand.

C. Have two (2) people lift the FFU. Turn the FFU on its side and align the four mounting holes (one at each corner) with the predrilled holes on the stand.

D. Have another person fasten the FFU to the stand using the provided bolts and washers. Fully tighten all bolts before letting go of the FFU.

E. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for any remaining FFU(s).

3.8 Preparing the Vinyl Wall for FFU Porting With the FFU stand assembled and in position, the FFUs must now be ported into the cleanroom through the vinyl wall panel. A. Orient the FFU stand so that the blue pre-filter will be outside of the cleanroom (facing away), and the 2’ x 4’ HEPA filter

screen will aim into the cleanroom.

B. Move the FFU stand so that the HEPA filter screen is pressed against the vinyl wall.

C. Mark the cut-out for each FFU by tracing along the edge of each filter face. The cut-out only needs to be large enough to expose the entire filter face (for unrestricted airflow). Be careful not to make the cut-out too big. Prepare a separate cut-out for each FFU. Do NOT make one large cut-out to accommodate both filters.

Figure 8. FFU stand fully assembled

3.9 Installing the Polypropylene Frame Kit The FFU stand assembly includes a polypropylene frame kit that clamps the vinyl wall around the face of the exposed filter.

If the FFU stand was shipped fully assembled, the polypropylene mounting brackets are likely to be already installed. If not, follow the instructions below to prepare the FFUs: A. After the FFUs have been mounted on their

stand, gather the white polypropylene frame components: 4 polypropylene mounting bracket components and 1 polypropylene frame.

B. Begin by attaching the mounting pieces to the FFUs. The mounting components will have an L-shape and will be installed around the edge of the filter face. The proper placement for each piece can be determined by their dimensions, as they will only fit one way. Pilot holes are predrilled in each piece to show where to fasten. Use ½” self-tapping sheet metal screws for fastening.

Figure 10. The polypropylene mounting components (shown in blue) are attached along the outside edge of the filter, flush with the filter face. Whenever possible, fasteners should grab the steel housing of the FFU, not the gray aluminum frame of the HEPA filter.

Figure 9. A polypropylene mounting kit shown in the correct orientation prior to fastening. The mounting bracket is made up of four separate pieces that must be held flush with the HEPA filter screen

C. After the mounting components have been attached, position the FFU stand against the outside of the vinyl wall panel again, with each filter face aligned with its respective cut-out. Have one person hold the stand in this position until Step 4 is complete.

D. From inside the cleanroom, align the flat polypropylene frame with the exposed filters so that the frame will clamp the vinyl

wall to the polypropylene mounting bracket on the FFUs. Have another person fasten the polypropylene components together using the pilot holes as a guide. Once fastened, the vinyl wall panel should be sandwiched tightly up against the FFU. Repeat this process for all remaining FFUs.

Figure 11. Side view of FFU attachment to the vinyl wall cut-out. The vinyl wall panel is sandwiched in between the polypropylene frame and polypropylene mounting brackets, without obstructing the HEPA filter screen.

3.10 Initial Start-Up To complete the installation, plug the fan/filter units into a grounded 120VAC power source. The FFUs will immediately begin to operate. Allow the cleanroom to ventilate for 30 minutes and perform a thorough decontamination of the cleanroom. Depending on the processes involved, the cleanroom may need to be certified by an independent third party or approved for a particular use by regulatory authorities before commencing operations. Be sure to follow all applicable codes and regulations when operating the cleanroom.

4.0 Operation and Maintenance

Disconnect the unit from the electrical power source before attempting any repairs or service.

WARNING

4.1 Basic Operation Fan/filter units offer three air speeds, selectable via a switch on the FFU housing. All FFUs are factory-set at medium speed, which provides the 90 fpm air speed typically required for cleanroom operation. The HEPA filters provide effective operation for years under typical operating conditions. In fact, filter efficiency increases as the filter captures more and more particles. The filter does not require replacement until the back pressure that it generates increases to the point that the system can no longer provide an adequate air flow velocity to maintain required particle counts. To monitor this condition, periodic testing with a particle counter is recommended. The standard MERV 7 prefilter may require more frequent replacement . 4.2 Cleaning and Sterilization

Always check chemical compatibility before cleaning plastic surfaces.

CAUTION

Use a clean, non-shedding cloth (polyester wipers are recommended) and wipe surfaces in slow, unidirectional motions, folding the soiled surface of the cloth portion to trap contaminant’s after each pass. Avoid circular motions when cleaning.

Wipes are used more frequently than any other cleaning product or tool. Selection of wipes should be based on intended usage. When selecting wipes you should consider things such as particle-shedding properties, chemical residue of the wiper content, static properties, absorbency and size. Wipe in one direction from left to right. Use slightly overlapping strokes. Remove surface spots with commercial cleaner and woven polyester wipes.

There are a variety of different vacuums available for your cleanroom. Selection of a vacuum will depend heavily on the application and the type of cleanroom you have. With all different types of sizes and filtration systems, select the one you feel would best suit the cleaning needs of your room. The ITW Tex wipe Mini Environment Cleaning Kits are ideal for cleaning corners and difficult-to-reach locations inside the cleanroom. The kits include a cleaning tool (18” and 24” handles, 1 polyester foam pad, and 6 mop covers), one production bag of dry and pre-wetted wipers and an informational brochure with instructions on how to clean your equipment. Designed to facilitate cleaning, the included mop head has a low, flat profile with rounded corners and can be autoclaved. The swivel joint allows the user to reach inaccessible areas and replaceable foam pad ensures that the mop cover conforms to the surfaces that are being cleaned. The polyester knit fabrics used for the wipers and mop covers will not contaminate surfaces when used in cleaning and disinfection operations.

4.3 Filter Replacement Guidelines The filters provide effective operation for years under typical operating conditions. In fact, filter efficiency increases as the filter captures more and more particles. The filter does not require replacement until the system can no longer provide an adequate airflow velocity to maintain required particle counts (typically below 90 FPM; refer to accepted practices for meeting ISO classification standards). Document the starting air velocity and monitor the condition. Periodic testing with a particle counter is also recommended. Leak testing and other certification services may be required depending on your application.

4.4 Replacing the HEPA Filter

Disconnect the FFU from the electrical power source before servicing.

WARNING

The HEPA/ULPA filter is protected with an expanded metal face screen. This is never to be used to handle the filter. It is only for protection against an accidental touch of the filter. Handle the filter only by the frame.

CAUTION

Figure 12. Standard Fan/Filter Unit

1. Remove the FFU from the stand. Then, remove the 10 screws holding the HEPA / ULPA filter to the lid assembly.

2. Lift the lid assembly off the HEPA / ULPA filter. Discard the used filter as per applicable regulations.

3. Carefully attach the new filter, being sure not to touch or otherwise damage the filter face.

4. Turn the pre-filter retaining clip and replace the pre-filter.

5. Position the unit back in the ceiling grid and reconnect the unit to its power supply

7.0 Warranty

Products Manufactured by Terra: Terra Universal, Inc., warrants products that it manufactures to be free from defects for a period of 12 months for parts and 90 days for labor, commencing from the date of shipment. Terra’s sole responsibility is to repair or replace, at its option, any part of the product that proves defective or malfunctioning during this time limit. In some cases, components incorporated in Terra Universal products are covered by additional warranties from component manufacturers; obtain specific information from Terra sales representatives. This warranty is void if the equipment is abused or modified by the customer, is operated outside Terra’s operating instructions or specifications, or is used in any application other than that for which it is specified. This warranty does not include routine maintenance or service procedures, breakage of quartz baths after 60 days, shipping damage, nor damage from misuse, intentional or unintentional abuse, neglect, natural disasters, or acts of God. Products Manufactured by Others: Terra Universal, Inc., warrants that, to the best of its ability, Terra’s representations of products that are manufactured by others reflect the manufacturer’s representations, subject to change without notice. Sole warranty for these products is the original manufacturer’s warranty that is passed forward to the purchaser and constitutes the customer’s sole remedy for these products. Detailed warranties for distributed products are available through Terra sales representatives. Freight Shortage or Damage: Upon receipt of any equipment from Terra Universal, Inc., customer shall immediately unpack and inspect for damage or shortage. The customer shall not accept a damaged package or a short shipment until the carrier makes a "damage or shortage" notation on both the carrier's and customer's copy of the freight bill or delivery receipt. Service title passes when the shipment is loaded, so customer is responsible for filing and collecting a freight claim. Any replacement products must be ordered and paid for separately. For Terra's "Policy and Procedures for Returning Goods," see Terra's Internet site: www.TerraUniversal.com. Generally, customers can improve the chance of collecting on a freight claim by following these procedures: 1) formally requesting that the carrier inspect the shipment immediately upon suspecting damage or shortage to verify condition; 2) notifying the carrier upon discovery of concealed damage and requesting an inspection within 15 days of receipt, both in person or phone and following up via mail; 3) keeping the shipment as intact as possible, including retaining original packaging materials and keeping the product as close to the original receiving location as possible; 4) holding salvage for disposition by the carrier. All Claims: Terra Universal expressly disclaims all other warranties, expressed or implied or implied by statute, including the warranties of merchantability or fitness for intended use. Terra Universal is not responsible for consequential or incidental damages arising out of the purchase or use of the products supplied by Terra Universal. Terra Universal is not liable for damage to facilities, other equipment, products, property or personnel of others, or of their agents, suppliers, or affiliated parties, which is caused or alleged to have been caused by products supplied by Terra Universal. In any event or series of events, Terra Universal’s total liability for any and all damages whatsoever is limited to the lesser of the actual damages or the original invoice cost of the items alleged to have caused the damage. The customer’s sole and exclusive remedy for any cause of action whatsoever is repair or replacement of the non-conforming products or refund of the actual purchase price, at the sole option of Terra Universal. All claims must be made in writing within 90 days of the date the product was shipped. Any claims not made within this time limit shall be deemed waived by the customer. Terra Universal is not responsible for any additional costs of repair caused by poor packaging or in-shipment damage during return. Warranty Returns: All warranty returns must be authorized in advance by Terra Universal and approved under an RMA. Unless approved in advance for good reason, all returns must be in original condition, including all manuals, and must be packaged in original packaging materials. All returned goods are to be shipped to Terra Universal, freight prepaid at custome r’s expense. See Terra’s “Policy and Procedure for Returned Goods.”
