A well-connected entrepreneurial ecosystemSouth Australia is building a reputation as one of the best regions for entrepreneurs in Australia.

Our working spaces, support programs, tech and maker community and research institutions are providing the foundations for new companies to start up and innovators to flourish.

Our diverse and sophisticated entrepreneurial ecosystem provides support to entrepreneurs at all stages of their careers – whether they’re looking to start up a business or expand and grow a company from Adelaide.

The sheer size and scale of our entrepreneurship ecosystem is impressive, which is why at the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance’s 2014 summit, Adelaide was identified as the Australian benchmark for coordinated support of entrepreneurship.

In addition, the greater Adelaide region won the inaugural Innovative Regions Award in October 2015 as part of the Australian Technologies Competition, again for our innovative programs.

Now’s the time to start a business in South Australia.

Not only is Adelaide ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit as the fifth most liveable city in the world, it has been recognised by the G20 for its coordinated support for entrepreneurship. It is a tech-forward city that is building sophisticated infrastructure for start-ups.Techstars

Welcome to South AustraliaOur state offers you a fertile ecosystem for growing innovative enterprises within a culture of creativity, connectivity and collaboration.

Our capital city, Adelaide, is the most advanced environment for start-ups in Australia and is ideally located to service the growing technology markets of South East Asia, China, India and Japan. Adelaide is Australia’s only CISCO Lighthouse City and the first in the southern hemisphere, providing local businesses with access to the company’s huge global network.

French defence company DCNS was this year awarded the largest procurement contract in Australia – a A$50 billion deal to build 12 new submarines in Adelaide. DCNS has announced that it will create 2900 high tech and manufacturing jobs in the city, with a further 600 jobs to be created in the supply chain and 500 in combat integration. The development is expected to have major flow-on effects for many sectors of the South Australian economy, particularly communications and information technology.

South Australia has a strong resources and energy sector and is a leading agricultural region, with world class food and wine exports. It also has a skilled manufacturing base, particularly in the health, medical devices and electronic sectors.

Adelaide is a very liveable, modern city, surrounded by beautiful beaches, native bushland and world renowned wine regions. The city is synonymous with international events, including the Adelaide Festival of Arts, WOMAD and the Tour Down Under. The lifestyle is relaxed and cultured and our cost of living is very affordable in comparison to other major cities in Australia.

Our geographic location is in alignment with the time zones of Asian countries, and we have existing networks with Asian economies and transport connections. These all make South Australia a destination of choice for companies seeking to service Asian Pacific markets from a safe and politically stable environment.

Gig City, Smart City and Internet of ThingsAdelaide has taken an open and integrated approach to technologies including Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart City solutions.

Adelaide has been announced as Australia’s first GigCity, offering businesses high-speed internet that’s up to 100-times the national average.

The GigCity initiative provides fibre networks linking key universities, defence hubs, innovation hubs, schools, and more than 150 other locations across the greater Adelaide region.

GigCity will help new businesses grow faster and attract entrepreneurs to South Australia who want to tap into the infrastructure and business environment we are creating.

As the first city outside of the US to join the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities program, Adelaide is entering a new era of collaboration by breaking the tyranny of distance and enabling Australian businesses to collaborate and share information with their American counterparts.

In addition, the Adelaide City Council is proceeding with the role out of a 10 Gig City project. This will provide a dedicated business interconnected network that will link CBD businesses to data centres in Australia and internationally across dedicated fibre connections.

Adelaide is progressing Australia’s leading Smart City agenda, with experimental programs including smart parking and lighting in progress, as well as many other associated initiatives such as traffic sensing and autonomous vehicle testing.

In 2015, Cisco announced Adelaide as one of five global Lighthouse Cities, joining a prestigious list that includes Barcelona, Chicago, Hamburg and Dubai.

Supporting the Smart City agenda is the Adelaide Smart City Studio. This space has been established to help identify and generate commercial opportunities for creative innovators and support their endeavours to build compelling smart city solutions for Adelaide and beyond.

We are also set to become the first state to be fully connected with a dedicated IoT network, with global network provider Sigfox backed operator Thinxtra, currently rolling out its network across the state in a project which will make South Australia a leading IoT region in the southern hemisphere.

HealthSouth Australia is a global healthcare innovator, leading researcher and service provider, with major investments and newly developed precincts for thousands of scientists and students in the heart of Adelaide.

The new flagship North Terrace Health Precinct is the largest in the southern hemisphere, and includes:

> The new Royal Adelaide Hospital – one of the largest and most advanced in the world

> South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), an iconic building which is attracting the world’s brightest medical researchers

> The University of Adelaide and University of South Australia’s health and medical research facilities.

Global health companies are also choosing Adelaide to take advantage of local expertise and skills from related sectors such as precision mechanics, robotics, electronics, ICT and engineering.

Low carbon leadershipSouth Australia has a goal to achieve A$10 billion investment in low carbon energy generation, and see half of its needs provided by renewable energy, by 2025.

The state’s mix of renewable energy resources is as extensive as anywhere in the world. It includes abundant wind resources capable of being accessed from hundreds of kilometres of coastline and an unrivalled potential for geothermal energy. Solar resources are outstanding in world terms as are potential wave energy resources.

Australia’s Clean Energy Finance Corporation recently amended its policy to allow funding for reinvestment in windfarm projects. This will be particularly beneficial for South Australia, which is home to significant wind energy generation.

The quality of the state’s resources is such that they can be used to produce much more renewable energy at competitive prices, yet only a fraction of them are being used at present. To assist potential international investors, the state has compiled comprehensive maps and energy atlases for each of the renewable energy sources.

The State Government also recently committed to establishing a carbon neutral Adelaide Green Zone. This initiative is designed to drive further emissions reductions, increase the demand for renewable energy, build the state’s green industries, increase resource efficiency, improve waste management and facilitate the transition to cleaner transport modes.

Research and educationSouth Australia prides itself on being the nation’s ‘Knowledge State’. Alongside three world-class public universities (The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University) and campuses of the international Torrens University Australia and Carnegie Mellon, and many private specialist training institutions providing industry with a highly-skilled workforce.

Over 30,000 international students from 125 countries study in South Australia every year, creating a pool of expertise that makes Adelaide an ideal base for Asia Pacific growth. International education is South Australia’s largest service export and sixth largest export overall.

University and commercially-based research and development has led international change in a number of fields. More recently, the purpose-built South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) has begun attracting some of the world’s best and brightest researchers to an outstanding medical precinct.

DefenceSouth Australia has been announced as the location of the A$50 billion Future Submarines Project - Australia’s biggest ever defence investment and one of the world’s single biggest military contracts. This project alone will drive vast activity across defence and associated industries, particularly in the technology and innovation sectors.

South Australia will also host the nation’s A$230 million Centre for Defence Industry Capability, making it the heart of Australia’s defence innovation – with the state now benefiting from a majority share of the total Australian defence industry spending.

In September 2016, Adelaide was confirmed as the location for a new A$500 million Australian Defence electronic war-gaming laboratory, including dedicated new facilities and simulation and testing equipment.

South Australia is home to Australian Aerospace Alliance and a critical mass of aerospace companies with strengths in engineering, testing and evaluation, systems integration and through-life support.

South Australia has the Royal Australian Navy’s biggest projects and is home to the nation’s premier naval industry hub, Techport Australia. In addition to the Future Submarines Project, the state is scheduled to deliver the A$3 billion Offshore Patrol Vessel project from 2018. Adelaide also has the headquarters of the A$8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer project, the most complex ship construction project ever undertaken in Australia.

Tenders for the A$10 billion Land 400 project are in progress, and this is one small part of the state’s overall land combat system plans. South Australia stands ready to partner with defence and industry to deliver an Integrated Land Combat Systems precinct. This will bring together all Commonwealth, State and industry people, systems and infrastructure needed to build, integrate, upgrade, sustain and optimise the Land Combat System.

Success Story

Buddy Platform

The ability to find and recruit highly skilled staff is one of the benefits of being located in Adelaide for US-based company, Buddy Platform.

The company, which provides data processing infrastructure for the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT), set up its new Australian operations in Adelaide in December 2015.

Investment Attraction South Australia helped pave the way for the company by linking it with the state’s burgeoning ICT sector and introducing them to key decision-makers.

The IoT is a vast and emerging opportunity, with billions more devices about to be connected to the internet.

Businesses that traditionally were not in the data processing game are suddenly finding themselves riding the IoT wave. More companies are discovering the advantages of incorporating IoT capabilities, with industries such as manufacturing, supply chain, energy and retail having some of the greatest potential. Buddy Platform offers services to businesses to enable them to use these IoT devices safely and to efficiently utilise the data they generate.

The company has built a system to efficiently and affordably collect and process this data, and enable companies to unlock the value in the tremendous amounts of data generated by these devices.

Buddy Chief Executive and co-founder Mr David McLauchlan said he was pleased that the company had been able to source the skilled workers it needs from within the state, in roles including ICT developers, engineers and account managers.

“Investment Attraction South Australia has been incredibly supportive in helping us to achieve some of our goals through regular meetings and targeted networking,” David said.

“We’ve been able to hire top quality staff without the wage pressures of Sydney in particular.

“The South Australian Government’s hiring incentives and other support for Buddy have also had a positive impact, certainly encouraging us to make our Adelaide operation the growth location in our global operation.

“The close knit business network in Adelaide has also been beneficial to Buddy, with a healthy desire to collaborate and promote one another.”
