On the 16th November, 1955, a1 a site on th€ AdelaidePlain 17 miles north of Adelaidc a ncw town wasinaugurated by Sir Thomas Playford, C.C.M.G., thenPremier of Soulh Ausiralia. By $acious perm;ssion ofHer Majesty, ihis town was named ELIZABETH.

ID our modem wodd, wide-sprcad;ng c;ties areinevitable, but at some timc therc must be an optimumsize for a particular city, when its populadon, physicaldevelopmert and serviccs (such as roads and public trans-port facilities) have bmught it to its most favourabledegree of development. Whcn that stage js reached, everyincrease tends to impose disadvantages, rather than advatr-tages, on those who live and work within its framework. There are grounds for supposing that this state of afiairswill be reach€d in a fe\rr generations in Adelaide, SouthAustralia. The rapid growth of population and industrialprogress in tbis State emphasizc the need for eitherdevcloping existing towns or establishing new certres andit is against this background that the planning of Elizaberhbegan.

In the early 1950's the South Australian Housing Trustdeveloped a plan for a future town to be a centre ofcommunity life for its inhabitants and not iust ar exten-sion of the City of Adelaide. The currcnr pldn providesfor the Trust to bu;ld at least 15.000 houses and flats ara rate of about I,000 dlvelings a ycar, to accommodatean ultimate poputation of more than 70,000 people. Open Spaces

A striking feature of the Elizabeth plan is a verygenerous provision of open spaces, as well as small gardenreserves in t}le Towl Centre, shopping centles, and in theresident;al areas. A total of not less than 1,400 acres hasbeen set aside for this purpose, and, at this stage, some220,000 trees and shrubs have been planted under a planwhich provides for at least 300,000 plantings throughoutthc cntire area. Apart from the extensive plantings inpublic places, the Trust also supplies frcm its nursery toevery new household, a choice of six shrubs or trees, andto date approx;mately 65,000 trccs or shrubs have beenissued.

An extcnsive tree, planting programme is also bcingcarried out with approximarely 100 miles of strectsplanted with trees on the verees to date.

Elizabeth is be;ng built on -what was an alnost treelessplain, but alrcady it has become a carden City.
