Living is an art, be it real or virtual!

And interacting is one of the most delicate tasks as a

school for the art of good living. What is ethical, how to act

and interact in a positive way? Is there any difference

between real and virtual life? Is everything allowed

when a monitor is the only witness of who we are?

This is a great discussion that I propose in this issue,

in which I talk about some nuances and subtleties

of behavior, character and respect to people.

Success is achieving the results we expected by

our actions. We have found many incredible

examples of success in SL. Frolic Mills enchants

and surprises all as a successful entrepreneur in

a delightful interview.

Unveiling beautiful gardens in our TP to Forest

Feast and delight yourself with new looks and

fashion tips in the special top 5.

As laughing is a great medicine, have fun

with Geppex McCaw and his incomparable

art!

Enjoy this Issue. Have fun and think..

Sweet kisses,

There is no chance to call this issue’s cover,

a “challenge”.

Challenges are difficult, stressful and

boring sometimes. But, having Frolic Mills

on the cover, a Greek God, what would be

difficult or a challenge? Nothing!

In fact this cover was determined and

ready since the fifth issue, when Frolic

posed for us at the InnerWorld’s HQ, for

the Globalization’s article.

There were many photos, some of his face,

which inspired the idea of what would be

the cover. His white hank would be the

touch of silver and elegance that the cover

would have; and it would be a good mix

with the golden Logo of InnerWorld. There

is nothing better than silver and gold to

symbolize the success and growth within

Second Life. Frolic is an example of success

and it inspired his interview for the seventh

issue of InnerWorld Magazine.

Hugs,

Thereaver Barrymore.

V irtual worlds are becoming very important as a new way for people to interact.

Some of these environments have similarity to the physical world and, like in Second

Life, we are represented by avatars, which can look like humans, mythical beings or

whatever you decide to be to interact socially and even economically.

As many educational institutes, important companies, non-profit organizations

and government agencies have their representation in-world, the Ethics subject is a

must to be discussed.

Real people are behind the avatars, so it is important to think about behavior in

Virtual worlds. If you are honest as a REAL person, naturally you will behave the same

way everywhere you go, even in a Virtual life. The opposite is also true, as there are

thousands taking advantage of their anonymity. Some banks were running schemes

fraud, there were casinos and some people also found ways to copy products and

steal them, just ignoring the copyrights. These and so many other problems have

raised serious ethical questions about how to manage and “clean” Second Life. Some

virtual worlds just collapsed because of many bad situations and many residents,

which are amazing creators

and designers, simply left SL for good.

I t is not a matter of Puritanism and morality in social interaction, but the

understanding of the ethical issues involved in this process. Virtual worlds and online

behavior became a challenge to observe the impact on human life. Since actions are

virtual in SL, many people don’t take seriously the effects it can cause and can’t

realize what ethical behavior is.

| 15

Page 16: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

Even being a simulation of life we

can’t forget avatars are the representation

of a real person. Virtual worlds clearly have

potential to create wonderful

opportunities regarding many kinds of

relationships, business and education;

however there are ethical issues with

behaving well and many people do not

behave as they might. It became easier for

many people to interact through an avatar,

as there are no face-to-face relationships.

It is very abstract to judge real or virtual

actions and if each situation is ethically

equal. We don’t know exactly how

harmful some actions taken in virtual

worlds can be in real life. Again, the

implications require an abstract thinking,

as what is harmful to some, can be less

important to others. Nevertheless it is

common sense that copyrights, honesty

and truth should be respected.

Some people think that Virtual Worlds

are separate of real life and it is true in

some aspects, but many people believe

their actions also mean different “limits”

in real and virtual life and they decide they

can do everything, doesn’t matter what or

who will be affected.

Virtual life offers more “freedom”

and lots of “promises”, which are very

dangerous. Anonymity and freedom can

be an amazing opportunity to create,

learn and explore endless new dreams.

However, for the ones who don’t have the

“ethical thinking”, it can be a great tool to

practice many kinds of crimes or simpler

than that, but not less harmful… to cheat

people’s feelings.

Character is an intrinsic quality and

comes together with education. So, why

ethical behavior should be different when

we are in Virtual Worlds? Is it acceptable

to offend, to use racism, to say bad

words, to lie or take advantages just

because you are an “avatar”? But, without

your control, personality and beliefs, this

16 | InnerWorld Magazine Issue 7 • August 2009

Page 17: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

avatar would never exist or act as it does.

So, your “doll” is nothing less than YOU,

just YOU pixeled.

This “parallel” life can fulfill so many

fantasies and secret desires and it can

become a powerful tool to live happy

moments or to hurt people. It is our

choice. Second Life is a simulator of life

and dreams. A simulator, and not a game,

as so many people say. The virtual

environment simulates our real lives in

many ways. If you think you can “play”

with feelings… it is up to you… We can

find a lot of “drama Queens and Kings in-

world”.

This experience is full of surprises and

expectations and that is the point where

Character is an intrinsicquality and comes together

with education

| 17

some smart people take advantage of naïve

residents.

How many avatars are necessary to be

happy? Hum… this question can’t be

answered by who love to create many to cheat

people. Some do this to take easy money, some

are created to wear different skins, shapes,

fashion, etc, they just stole using copybot (I call

them the smart losers); and some are created

to cheat even more, by seducing, telling sweet

words to conquer a completely fake

relationship, where somebody will definitely be

very hurt.

So many have alts to live multiple affairs (as

their real love life is empty or they are not brave

enough to live what they would like in RL), or

they make business and use their terrible

character. How can they lie so easily? Many are

perfect actors/actresses and personify their

dozens of characters that could win an Oscar

prize. It is simply amazing and there are many

studies about how Virtual Lives can increase

| 19

Page 20: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

the symptoms of schizophrenia in people

who have this mental disease.

Of course and thank God we also find

wonderful, crystal clear and honest people

in real or virtual life and that’s why we can

choose the light and be very far from the

darkness. Virtual Worlds can be an

amazing tool to improve our real lives, if

we decide to have ethics.

This essay is to discuss character,

honesty, ethics and how productive and

nice a Virtual life can be. It can add

wonderful experiences to our real life.

And to the ones who prefer the darkness

and cheat people, maybe it would be

good to think more about their choices.

She is elegant and offers pure Glamour by

wonderful creations, which make women

feel like Divas. Ava Lu came to SL to make

the difference.

It’s impossible to not fall in love with her

fashion!

The start of her career in Second Life was

interesting, as Ava says, “With limited

funds, we entered the SL fashion world

meagerly. Squatting in an empty building

belonging to Christiano, of Snapzilla, we

built our first boutique on land that

allowed the creation of objects. The

entrance to our store was exclusive. With

no public advertising, we sent landmarks

and invited well-known bloggers and

fashion designers of the time. We were

thankful for everyday Christiano didn’t

return out items, but we couldn’t stay

there forever. Then, we moved the Paper

Couture store to the Tableau sim and the

rest is history. Since then we have been

creating fall and spring collections.”

Ava Lu and her sisters (Prue, Mare, Mimi, and Cora) joined Second Life with

the intention of creating high fashion to battle the onslaught of miniskirts,

bling, and tubetops that plagued Second Life three years ago. And it is

important to say that her RL culture and country definitely influence her

creations, even if she has not a RL fashion background.

Her second life is all dedicated to make dresses and she can’t say much

about sharing different cultures, languages and ideas in this virtual world,

as she is always busy and focused in her fashion. Ava even tries to not

communicate with her customers when possible, as her second life is really

busy.

In her opinion she believes it's possible to make real money with anything

you can think of, even in Second Life. Right now, somewhere in-world,

people are charging admission for diaper parties. – “I think when you have

a niche that you are passionate about, there is no limit.

To be a professional you must have a group tag that labels you as a "CEO".

Accept nothing less.”

Each season has improved in quality and beauty, and it takes quite a work

to plan and create everything. “Lately, it has become very elaborate and

takes approximately 2-3 months from concept to finish.” - she says.

Ava developed a lot of new skills because of SL and it is very nice, as she

learned new photoshop tricks, in addition to learning advanced 3d texturing

and modeling. “Being on a 3-D chat in itself is a constant learning process.”

Page 29: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

At the moment what has been keeping

Cora and Ava busy is that they are

planning the funerals of their sisters who

have decided to no longer be part of Paper

Couture. They aren't physically dead, but

to them they no longer exist.

Finally, she would like to be able to

preview textures on a moving avatar,

before having to pay 10L to upload them.

Thank you so much for your kind attention

and creations, Ava.

Interview | Frol ic Mi l ls

Page 40: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

InnerWorld: What do you think about

Virtual worlds and why did you choose

Second Life?

Frolic Mills: I actually believe Second Life

chose me. On my third day of SL, I was

walking in an island very bored and quite

ready to give up on SL, when I got

approached to be a DJ for a latin disco...

If it wasn't for that, I may have not survived

my first week in this platform.

InnerWorld: How long were you in SL

before you felt you could have business

there?

Frolic Mills: I founded BOSL 5 months after

my rezz day. I jumped from DJ to model

to photographer to BOSL and many things

after that. Its an adventure, and I treat it

as such, but with a high level of respect.

InnerWorld: Why did you create a

magazine about SL?

Frolic Mills: Because I couldn't find the

information that I needed about the best

content creators in SL.

InnerWorld: Tell us more about your

projects in SL, such as THE BEST OF SL

BOULEVARD, BOULEVARD MODEL

AGENCY and the BOSL ONLINE

SHOPPING.

Frolic Mills: Well, soon after BOSL

magazine was born, my creative outlets

started to take me in different places.

Boulevard Agency is my hat as a show

director and producer. BOSL ONLINE

shopping will be similar to xstreet and its

more of my business side. BOSL ONLINE

starts in October and will be a great way

to explore and shop for the BEST OF

SECOND LIFE Online.

InnerWorld: Besides doing business what

do you like more to do in SL?

Frolic Mills: I like to produce high quality

shows.

Page 42: InnerWorld Magazine # 7 in English

InnerWorld: It is not easy to deal with

people and their vanity. How have you

planned and realized the MISS/MR

VIRTUAL WORLD and solved the situation

about trademark?

Frolic Mills: hehe that's true - MISS

VIRTUAL WORLD is filled with human

emotions and reactions and sometimes it

gets a bit dramatic, and yet it has become

one of the biggest productions in SL. I am

quite proud of it. I registered MISS

VIRTUAL WORLD as a trademark, so that's

done. :)

InnerWorld: Do you think some people

can separate RL of SL and because of it,

they believe they can do anything in-

world?

Frolic Mills: I suppose some can do this.

But, I truly believe, one carries quite a lot

of the real life character and personality

onto the avatar. Show me a hard working,

honest person in SL and I will show you a

hard working, honest person in RL. Show

me a drama queen in SL and ...

InnerWorld: It is a delicate matter, but do

you think you are gossiped about lot for

being so successful or what?

Frolic Mills: I am always proud to create

work that others find interesting enough

to copy or criticize. I don't mind it at all.

InnerWorld: If you could start your SL

today, would you make anything different,

if yes, what would it be?

Frolic Mills: I would be a bit more careful,

but I truly believe it is experience, which

makes a man wise. So, maybe I would not

change anything at all. :)

InnerWorld: What could you tell regarding

having a successful Second Life to

someone who is starting it today?

Frolic Mills: Find your true passion and

then, do it well!

InnerWorld: Have you learned any new

skill because of SL?

Frolic Mills: Yes, I have become a lot more

organized. Also I seem more cause over

time than ever before. In RL I couldn't

possibly orchestrate everything I do in SL.

InnerWorld: If you could sum up your SL

in one though, what would it be?

Frolic Mills: Passion for excellence

InnerWorld: Thank you very much for your

attention.
