History Lange Voorhout
The Lange Voorhout Avenue (Voorhout withemphasis on the second syllable) is one of the mostfamous streets of the Dutch city of The Hague. Thefirst buildings at the Lange Voorhout appearedaround the beginning of the 15th century. Thecurrent Monastery church (Kloosterkerk) is one ofthe few buildings that remained of the Monastrythat was built in the 15th century.
The Lange Voorhout owes its name to being anoffshoot of the Haagse Bos (The Hague Forest). Itscharacteristic L-shape came into existence by thecultivation of the Lange Vijverberg (1375-1400) andthe strip of land between the Hoge Nieuwstraat andthe Voorhout (1400-1475).
16th centuryDuring a stay in The Hague in 1536, Emperor Karel Vcommanded to plant four rows of linden trees at theLange Voorhout. These trees still give the LangeVoorhout a stately appearance.
17th centuryIn the golden age the Lange Voorhout is the meetingpoint of the The Hague beau monde, where they couldsaunter. On the request of Prince Maurits an attemptwas made to create a city moat of the Lange Voorhout. This failed, probably because the Lange Voorhout ispartly located on a sandy hill.
18th centuryIn the old days, the Lange Voorhout was full of smallhomes. In the 18th century a large part of thesehouses were demolished and replaced by thestately buildings out there right now. Many of theseproperties are state monuments.
19th centuryFrom 1811 till 1813 the Lange Voorhout was calledthe Cour Napoleon and the Lange Vijverberg theCour de lImpratrice. Later on it was decided torestore the old names.

21st centuryIn 2009, the Lange Voorhout has been renovated.Several constructions have been placed, including oneto protect the roots of the linden trees. Also, severalconcrete slabs have been placed to carry the sculpturesof the annual exhibition. A shell path covers theseconstructions, like it used to do in the old days. Thegolden crowns on the street lanterns indicate the routethat the golden carriage of her Majesty Queen Beatrixof the Netherlands rides during Prinsjesdag. Thelighting in the lanterns is controllable and can be aimedat the art objects
Well-known buildingsWell-known buildings at the Lange Voorhout include the Kloosterkerk, the Pagehuis, the building of theSupreme Court, Hotel Des Indes, the Palace Lange Voorhout (nowadays the 'Escher' Museum), and on theother side Pulchri Studio. In addition to these often huge buildings also the narrowest House in the Hague (1meter 83 wide) is to be found there.
The Lange Voorhout Palace (Escher in Het Paleis) is certainly the place to see the originals of famous works likeBelvdre, Ascending and Descending, Day and Night and parts of the Metamorphosis series. The LangeVoorhout Palace has been owned by the Royal Family for almost a hundred years. In 1896 it was bought byQueen Emma, the great-grandmother of the current Queen Beatrix. She had among other things the centralstairway constructed, which was meant for only three people: the Queen and the two most important Ladies ofthe Court. All the others had to take the (yellow) servant stairway, still in use for the second floor, or they hadto take the one that has now been replaced by an elevator.Downstairs in Caf MC (the former kitchen of the palace) you can see what the interior of the palace lookedlike in Emmas time and you will find portraits of her granddaughter Queen Juliana and her family.
The American and the British Embassy are located at the Lange Voorhout. Even before the attacks of 11
September 2001, these buildings were heavily guarded. The US Embassy will soon be moved to anotherlocation. The Swiss Embassy is located on nr. 42 and is the former home of Theodore baron de Smeth ofDeurne.
MonumentsApart from all the monumental buildings there arethree different monuments on the Lange Voorhout:the monument of Queen Emma, the monument forDuke Karel Bern(h)ard von Saxon Weimar (1792-Liebenstein (Saxen), 1862) and the pump.
The monument of Queen Emma is a kind of sofa.
On the back the following texts can be found:o In grateful memory of, and to honorable memoryof H.M. Queen Emma".o Offered by the order of Freemasons under theGrand Orient of the Netherlands in the year 1938,destroyed in 1940, reinstated in 1959.
The monument to Duke von Saxophones Weimarwas founded two years after his death and is on theside of the Toernooiveld, near the AmericanEmbassy. It has four texts:o Karel Bernard von Saxophones Weimar 1792-1862o Protector of the arts and scienceso Courageous and faithful warrior to The

The Hague
The Hague International City of Peace andJustice
The Hagues current role as host to international organizationsand the international community is part of a tradition datingback more than 750 years.
In 1998 the city celebrated its 750th anniversary with a grandcommemoration, and the citys international community waswell-acknowledged.
Historians today generally agree that the city was founded in 1248 by Count William II of Holland. The nameoriginated from him: des Graven Hage, or the Counts Wall (or hedge), thus The Hague.
Hospitable cityPast generations helped to turn The Hagueinto the hospitable city it is today a diversecommunity of people from many differentbackgrounds and countries. In past centuriesit has been host to international visitors, butalso provided a safe haven for outcasts. In this respect the citys history is interwoven with, and deeply embedded in, the history of the Netherlands. It is no accident that the national constitution explicitly states the promotion of the international legal order. Ina climate that was remarkably tolerant and intellectual by the standards of their days, renowned scholars suchas Erasmus and Hugo Grotius were able to flourish here and make their bodies of ideas known to the world.
Important eventsIn more recent centuries, the city returned to the international spotlight as a location for important events andinstitutions such as the Peace Conferences of 1899 and 1907, the International Court of Justice, theInternational Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).These and many other important developments are strongly linked to The Hague and the activities hostedhere.
