Dear Colleagues,

It is with the utmost pride and pleasure that I welcome you to the very fi rst Connected World Forum.

As many of you know, my team and I have been working in the mobile money space for the past four years, the mobile

health space for the last two, and over the past 12 months have witnessed an increasing amount of convergence across technologies

and applications. For these reasons we felt 2011 was the right time to bring together our mobile money and mobile health conferences

to form Connected World Forum - a large scale, multi tracked conference that focuses specifi cally on the future of mobile life services

across Money, Health, Education, Ticketing and Agriculture.

I’d like to thank our Operator Partners Vodafone and Telenor plus our platinum sponsor ProgressSoft , all of our sponsors, exhibitors

and partners, for supporting our vision of bringing together so many key stakeholders from across the various mobile lifeline verticals.

In areas such as these, open platforms, common standards and honest dialogues are imperative for driving subscriptions, usage and

life changing innovation.

We’ve got a wonderful speaker roster at Connected World Forum, representing key mobile life programs from across both emerging and

developed markets - I thank them all for their invaluable contributions this week.

I hope you all visit the booths in our new extended exhibition area and get to listen to a number of the technology demonstrations that will

take place during breaks on the expo show fl oor.

I hope the event serves your needs well and you meet the people that you need to. If you need any assistance at all over the coming few

days, don’t hesitate to contact me or a member of my team – we’ll be happy to help.

Warm regards

Steve Clarke

Founder, Connected World Forum

Welcome from Vodafone

The mobile phone is one of the transformational technologies to emerge from the twentieth century, another is the Internet. These two

platforms are now coming together and their convergence means that true global connectivity is

almost upon us.

The progression from voice to data via mobile is expected to be just as transformational as the initial rise of mobile phones. Soon the fi rst

internet experience for many will be through a mobile device, as mobiles are more affordable and mobile networks more pervasive than

fi xed line alternatives. This is particularly evident in emerging economies where the lack of infrastructure has meant that mobiles have

become a platform for innovation across multiple sectors including better healthcare delivery, improved farming practices and access to

fi nancial services. Consider, for example, the success of our own money transfer service M-PESA, that now has over 20 million customers

and regularly transfers over US$ 500 million a month. ‘Connectivity’ in emerging economies really means ‘mobile connectivity’.

Vodafone is excited to be a leader – along with key industry, government and NGO partners – in making possible these transformational

innovations that improve the lives of hundreds of millions around the world. We are honoured to be the Operator Sponsor of this

year’s Connected World Forum/Mobile Money event and welcome both your participation and the chance to work with you as mobile

communications seek to change the world, again.

Mobile Financial Services in UAE – A Key Role in eTransformation

Market briefi ng report

Segments and Services

The UAE is part of the “MENA” region, which comprises 20

Arab states and has 68% of the world’s oil. As the second

largest economy in the Middle East it has excellent pros-

pects for growth. From being a cash-based society it has

continued to shift towards fi nancial cards and MFS.

Two key segments encourage the growth of mobile money.

Firstly, expatriates constitute the majority, with only

around 20% being UAE nationals, and for them, mobile

money has proved useful both in terms of receipt of pay

as well as for sending money home. Secondly, the youth

segment, (roughly one third of the population) is under

the age of 30.

Wage Protection System

In 2009 the Government introduced the Wage Protection

System that compels all companies to pay employees

through electronic payroll, with a checkpoint for Govern-

ment visibility of wage disbursement.

Prepaid and mobile

This triggered a rapid growth in open-loop prepaid cards

in 2010 (closed loop required legal framework not yet

approved by Central Bank of UAE). For example the UAE

payMAX card with G-Cash allows for receipt of wages

as well as sending money home. Prepaid cards found a

perfect partner in mobile. It becomes possible to properly

track the money on your card, making it into a mini “bank

account” on your phone. Leading issuers include Emirates

NBD, Standard Chartered Bank Plc, Mashreq Bank and

National Bank of Abu Dhabi.

mPay sees 50% rise in collection

Mobile payments are part of a key Government initiative to

put the “Customer First”. The mPay service for public to

pay using SMS realised a 50% rise in collections over the

fi rst half of 2011.

As part of the ePay initiative, it made payments easy and

accessible from any phone. By connecting with the UAES-

WITCH at UAE Central Bank, Dubai eGovernment allowed

fee payment through its ePay portal through ATM card/

direct debit to all 46 banks.

Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA)

EIDA oversees the Population Register and ID Card Pro-

gram. Like with the case of India’s Aadhar (discussed in

our last report), issuance of identity cards has been a key

enabler for mobile money. The electronic chip contains

face photo, name, date of birth, gender, nationality, moth-

er’s name, marital status, entry information, e-signature,

as well as other information relating to nationality and

residence for expatriates such as sponsor’s number, type,

number and expiry date of residence permit. This greatly

facilitates the provision of mobile money services provid-

ing a “hook” for AML/KYC management.

Regulations

A favourable approach to mobile greatly helps where

otherwise legal matters are complicated by existence of

federal, emirate, and Islamic Sharia law.

Key points

• Mobile payments are promoted by Government initiatives such as identity cards and mPay

• The Wage Protection Scheme triggered a wave of prepaid cards which provide a perfect partner for mobile money

• With key segments, expatriates and youth set to benefi t from new services, expect to see MFS take off in UAE

Key players

UAE, one of the most saturated markets in the Middle

East, is serviced by two main mobile operators Etisalat

and du.

Figure 1: Top mobile operators in UAE - market share

Etisalat headquartered in UAE, is one of the largest tel-

ecommunications companies in the world and the leading

operator in the Middle East and Africa.

Wallets launched

In June this year, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB)

partnered with Mobibucks, a mobile payments solu-

tions company based in the United States, to offer ‘Mobi’.

Claimed to be globally the fi rst of its kind, it is described

as a cashless, cardless, paperless and phoneless pay-

ment. Consumers create a virtual account online, based

on their mobile number and a secret pin number, which

they later use to make purchases.

Earlier in May, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD)

won best mobile payment application for its NBAD AR-

ROW service enabled by Luup. The service is SMS-based

and at the time of launch was the fi rst of its kind. It ena-

bled mobile money transfers and ATM cash-out to anyone

within the UAE, whether or not they are registered users

of Arrow.

Remittance corridors

The range of remittance services from UAE are claimed to

be one of the broadest in the world and include the UAE

Exchange MasterCard MoneySend service and payMAX

- both to the Philippines. Etisalat announced an alliance

with Western Union in February this year.

Key corridors from UAE include India, Pakistan, Philip-

pines and Bangladesh.

Figure 2: Remittances to and from UAE in US$ billions

To cater to them, in 2010 VoiceCash announced a service

to enable cross border remittance.

What is next?

UAE is certainly a market to watch, with more “fi rsts” to

be expected thanks to the progressive approach to mobile

money.

Abhishek Sinha, Eko India Financial Services Abhishek is responsible for the strategy and vision of Eko. His focus areas are regulations, compliance, corporate governance, generating disruptive business ideas, and building the leadership team at Eko. He also plays supportive roles to his colleagues in the areas of business development, product architecture and fund raising. Abhishek believes in the creation of wealth and degrees of freedom. After a short stint in the telecom division of Satyam, Abhishek discovered that his true calling was entrepreneurship. He co-founded Six DEE Telecom Solutions,

a telecom value added services company and grew the business to span nine countries and fi fteen operators. In February 2007, Abhishek exited Six DEE to pursue his vision to promote mobile phones as a fi nancial identity for people at the bottom of the pyramid. His passion for simplicity of user experience and zeal for democratizing access through cost-reduction, led to the development of the basic principles on which Eko is based. Those ideas were validated when he won the TIE-Canaan Entrepreneurial Challenge, 2006. Abhishek continued to learn from Telecom and tailor technology as well as business processes to suit the needs of the fi nancially excluded. The merit of the idea to use mobile technology as a means to achieve scale and cost effectiveness for fi nancial service delivery were re-confi rmed during a chance visit by Mr. Bill Gates in November 2008. Abhishek dreams of a cashless world where every individual could be a merchant and every phone, the equivalent of an ATM.

Mobile Money Explained: Vodafone drives Mobile Lifeline services

Interview with Matthew Kirk,

Group External Affairs Director,

at Vodafone

Sonum Puri, Event Director for Mobile Money Global Summit, part of the Connected World Forum, recently spoke to Matthew Kirk, Group External Affairs Director at Vodafone on his thoughts on mobile lifeline services such as mo-bile money, mobile education and mobile health and the impact of these services in emerging economies.

Mobile Money Global Summit is part of the Con-nected World Forum... a unique event that will show you how to launch and scale ‘mobile lifeline

services.’ Mobile Money. Health. Education. Agriculture.

Here is what Matthew had to say...

Sonum: Vodafone Group are responsible for the most well known and commercially successful Mobile Money program, M-PESA. Rewinding 5-10 years, what was the motivation and inspiration for launching the service?

Matthew Kirk: M-PESA came out of a number of factors; one obviously was the spread of access to communications through mobile technology. We did a lot of work at the time looking at the social impact of mobile- how people would use the technology and how it would enable them to improve their lives and their economic opportunities. Naturally, this pointed towards one of the adjacent areas which is also a major enabler of economic opportunity, which is the handling of money and the access to basic banking type services. What we could see at an early stage was that mobile technology could penetrate a much larger proportion of the popula-tion than banking servic es and if you could somehow therefore, pull together at least the cash transfer side of what most people in the developed world do through banks and similar institutions and enable that through the mobile, then you would deliver a signifi cant enabler of opportunity. I think it relied on the fact that within the mobile phone, through the way in which the SIM card operates on the network, you can achieve a high level of certainty around the identity of the recipient and sender. And so that critical element within the fi nancial institution relationship was something that with the right development and right technology would be some-thing relatively simple to replicate on the mobile platform. However, nobody knew if there would be demand for it and so we set up a pilot project to see to what extent we could prove; a. the technology and b. the customer desire for the service. The speed of take-up of handling money in Kenya (bearing in mind that mobile in Kenya was still a very much new technology platform for communications) was much greater than we or anyone had anticipated. That really showed us just how strong a need this type of service was fulfi lling.

Sonum: Can you defi ne the term Mobile Lifeline services for any of our readers to whom it may be unfamiliar?

Matthew: I wouldn’t say that this is really a defi ned term, but rather one, that has been used in parts of our company to describe a number of types of services. Es-sentially these are services adjacent to the basic communications such as voice, text and so forth, that you would expect to have on your mobile phone. Through the ubiquity of the platform, the user has access to other forms of service which have strong social or economic values for them.

Sonum: Mobile Money, Mobile Education and Mobile Health seem to be obvious examples of Mobile Lifeline services; would you agree that agriculture is also a type of Mobile Lifeline service?

Matthew: Yes very much so, I think education and healthcare are very obvious areas but we are also looking at agriculture and other parts of the economy. Agriculture is important because of the proportion of the population engaged in agriculture in emerging economies. One of the striking features of agriculture is that the basic in-formation that you would be accustomed to fi nding without much diffi culty in North America and Europe, simply exist in the same way in Africa or India, which makes it that much more diffi cult to bring improvements in systems that create new op-portunities. .And so, there is a function of collection of information and then a function of dissemination of information in a form that is useful and timely to people. This in turn enables them to manage agricultural operations and logistic supply much better so as producers and farmers, they can then feed into the purchasing systems in an effi cient and timely manner. So, there are a bundle of things that you can do of that kind: if you add on a payment service you make it possible for agriculture components to not just be a provision of information but also transactional.

Sonum: What impact can Mobile Lifeline services have on the lives of under-served people in emerging economies?

Matthew: Well I think the impact could be signifi cant and it should allow them to develop the way in which they are conducting their economic activity far more rapidly than if you were simply relying on the normal evolution and development of an economic system to happen. So we will be able to short circuit the normal innovation cycle and disseminate the effects quickly, bringing benefi t not only to producers but also to others in the agricultural economies and food and production economies in emerging markets

Sonum: In what sort of time scale do you think we could expect to see the full effects of such services?

Matthew: I can’t put a time scale on the full effects because at each stage of development, people come up with new innovations, and this is one of the exciting features of this technology. So I hope you never see the full effects, because we want to keep innovating and improving services! Inevitably it takes time to get a system from an idea into something that is used by a large number of people, but I hope there will be a relatively short time until we start to see how the positive impacts could be delivered. However getting to a point where a large number of people have learnt new ways of doing things and new uses of technology are put in place, made robust and linked into other systems e.g. power supplies, logistics, railways, and all the rest of it, well that could take a number of years... yet, I don’t fi nd this discouraging, in that I think lots of benefi ts could be shown quickly if you continue to build and connect, but you need to take the community with you, as you go along, rather than taking one enormous step.

Sonum: Has the success of M-PESA particularly in Kenya and Tanzania, proved the case for further Mobile Lifeline products and services?

Matthew: Defi nitely, not just M-PESA, but also other innovations have undoubt-edly shown that people are willing to trust their mobile phones for more than just basic communication, and as the technology we put into their hands becomes more sophisticated; the price of smart phones comes down (not just the high end ones but more basic ones that give internet access); and networks improve, internet access gets better – the range of services you can offer with a handheld device will become greater and will feed new innovation and business models. In Ghana we are working with the Worldwide Web Foundation which is supporting internet entrepreneurship, fuelling opportunity for people to create new business through developing locally and relevant services and content for communities in their own country and region, which requires a combination of entrepreneurial spirit and a certain skill set. So, it’s really a platform that can take lots of different directions and M-PESA is a good example because it would not work, operating only for a small group of people, its served the specifi c needs for a large volume of people and delivered huge value.

Sonum: Do you think that services such as Mobile Money and Mobile Health can be successful in developed as well as emerging markets?

Matthew: There are good examples in developed markets, but in terms of mobile money, the demand gap has not been as great in the developed markets. You have large networks of ATMs and internet banking and so forth, so the ability to access basic fi nancial services is already well spread and well available. The demand gap of mobile provision is much smaller, but still there are a number of initiatives pushing into this area. Healthcare is a huge opportunity and if you take the right approach in mobile healthcare, you can make the delivery system both more ef-fi cient and more personalised to meet the needs of an individual. Also, in developed countries, big systems are in place for healthcare delivery which makes things more complex and slower and the demand gap is lower. Innovation is happening in developed markets but the impact is always much more striking in emerging markets and that’s why you hear more about those stories.

Sonum: Vodafone provide a number of Mobile Health solutions - what are you doing to ensure that customers and patients are educated on the usability, security and convenience of these services?

Matthew: I think as with mobile money, mobile education and agriculture, a mobile phone company can’t do it alone, and one of the important lessons we have learnt from the adjacent areas is to build cross sector partnerships, as you can only de-liver the result which is of value to the patient if they already fi t into the healthcare operating system: what weare seeing is the solution actually powered or enabled by the mobile. Now, M-PESA is interesting because it was largely done by us but we needed a banking partner. The business model will depend on the regulatory regime and banks can have a more prominent role to play e.g. in India. So, I think that the fi rst step is to create cross sector partnerships and gather together the different strands to provide new approaches to offering the services to the customer and then it becomes about attracting new customers. The next step is to involve the mobile phone company or another stakeholder, depending on who would be better placed in the value chain to take on the responsibility of usability, security and convenience, but this is likely to vary case by case.

Sonum: Have Vodafone seen any specifi c political support for Mobile Lifeline services and if not, how important is it to engage governments in order to drive adoption?

Matthew: Oh, very important and we received plenty of political support from donor countries and NGOs. The development of M-PESA was partially funded by DFID in the UK, and lots of good support is coming from governments in emerging markets which is important as you often fi nd the regulatory or fi scal framework in a country, unintentionally, puts barriers in providing services in new ways. It’s important to get engagement with governments and political society to help people understand the benefi ts that can be delivered and allow debate on how the fi scal or regulatory regimes need to evolve to bring about the right effects.

Mobile Money Explained: Turkcell is the largest MNO in Turkey and the fi rst operator to launch an approved TSM NFC solution by MasterCard in Europe

Interview with Ergi Sener, Product

Manager, Mobile Financial Services,

TurkcellErgi Sener, who heads up NFC applications for Turkcell, gets beneath the hype to provide a real insight into the appetite for NFC as well as the critical success factors that will lead to widespread adoption and acceptance.

Turkcell is the largest MNO in Turkey and the fi rst operator to launch an approved TSM NFC solution by MasterCard in Europe. Turkcell is the also fi rst GSM operator in the world to represent more than one bank application on its mobile wallet service, Cep-T Cüzdan.

Here is what he had to say.

Sonum: What steps did Turkcell need to take in order to launch NFC payments in Turkey?

Ergi Sener: Turkcell have consistently been introducing mobile payment innova-tions on a local and global scale. These innovations have been market fi rsts, e.g. Turkcell became the fi rst operator in the world to represent more than one bank application. We utilised MasterCard’s mobile wallet solution, ‘Cep-T Cüzdan’, based on NFC technology. With its state-of-the-art technical infrastructure, Turkcell suc-ceeded in creating and managing secure domains inside the SIM with Simple Mode using the operator’s OTA (Over-The-Air), to create a real wallet concept. To realise these, an end-to-end platform was developed; new customer processes were formed and integration with service providers was fi nalised. As parts of the project, development of OTA, TSM (Trusted Service Management) and NFC gateway platforms were developed in order to achieve the end-to-end platform goal. Turk-cell OTA was built in a way that it establishes a platform in which both subscribers and service providers can easily adapt. All required applications, including account information are encrypted and loaded over-the-air into the secure areas formed in the SIM cards. NFC GateWay Platform was developed for transmitting the com-mands taken from service providers or TSM to the SIMs in a secure environment. Moreover, the TSM platform was also developed and Turkcell has been the fi rst mobile network operator in Europe to launch an approved TSM solution by Master-Card. From this platform, Turkcell Cep-T Cuzdan will open a whole new world of oppourtunities for mobile users; from ticketing, ID applications, physical access to loyalty applications and payments. After a series of customer reports, Turkcell Cep-T Cuzdan UI was designed, based on both Java and Android operating systems which has led to providing consumers the ability to control and manage their cards. This is an added benefi t in com-parison to the limitations of physical cards and wallets. Even though the demand for NFC has been around for 6 years, the main reason why it has not become a widespread technology is due to the lack of NFC enabled handsets. Thus, Turkcell has developed and launched its own branded handset with NFC functionality. As the successor of Turkcell’s fi rst branded handset called T10; T20 was manufactured as a UICC based SWP and consequently, NFC enabled by default. It seems that this will be a key factor for the penetration of NFC services in the Turkish market.

Sonum: Who are your main partners and what role do they play?

Ergi Sener: NFC technology has not yet reached a mature phase. Although, many tests have been done, a succesful commercial model hasn’t been formed yet, since the global standards are new and so many parties are involved in the ecosystem. Thus, while developing our platform, the business model was also formed by work-ing with all the related parties.Turkcell’s Mobile Financial Services division of New Technology Business led the project with the participation of the SIM & Multimedia Team of Turkcell Technol-ogy (Turkcell’s R&D company). Our SIM card manufacturer is Gemalto; payment authority, MasterCard. The business development and IT departments of partner banks, Yapı Kredi and Garanti Bank have also added value to the project. Also, the handset manufacturer of Turkcell branded T20, Huawei, joined the project with a crucial role of developing T20s with SWP UICC based NFC functionality.

Sonum: How did you identify the need for NFC in Turkey?

Ergi Sener: NFC will impact the mobile world radically according to Gartner. By 2012, Mobile payment and and NFC enabled applications like mass transit passes, mobile copuons and tickets and smart loyalty applications will be ranked among the top mobile applications. The mobile phones have more and more signifi cant roles in our lives nowadays. Recent research reveals that people like the idea of making payments with their mobile phones instead of conventional means of payment. Moreover today, Turkey is one of the most developed countries in terms of payment systems. More than 3 million customers are already using contactless credit cards and there are almost 50.000 contactless terminals in the fi eld, making it the second advanced market in terms of contactless terminals after the UK. Thus, Turkish people are getting used to contactless payments. They not only use contactless cards for payment, but for public transport systems; offi ce and home access systems and loyalty systems. So, contactless cards have already been a part of Turkish peoples’ lives for a long time already. Instead of carrying many physical cards, people prefer to carry only their mobile handsets. Turkcell Cep-T Cüzdan provides consumers with unifi ed access to payment and other relevant services (such as ticketing, ID, access, couponing and loyalty) through their mobile device. Besides, Turkey has one of the youngest populations in Europe, people are very open to new products and services as well as technological innovations and ‘being the fi rst adopter’ and taking advantage of new services and products. Mobile phone penetration is almost 100%, so we aim to create a holistic framework which can

integrate contactless services and be scaled across current and emerging mobile payments and mobile devices, accommodating the needs of a heterogenous con-sumer base. Our aim is to create a service which provides best in class usability and fl exibility to integrate future value added services into the mobile wallet. As mentioned, there is a high appetite for mobile payments in Turkey. Furthermore, mobility can also provide so many advantages for the customers in terms of pay-ment, that can also increase the interest and penetration. Our approach to the mo-bile wallet is a connected wallet so that details about the applications in the wallet can be learnt quickly and then the applications can be used in a more effi cient way. We also want to present an easy to use and practical user experience, in which payment and value added services, such as location-based campaigns, additional loyalty points during payment and direct campaign offerings, are integrated. The UI was developed in a way that all the processes are analysed through the custom-ers’ eyes. These facts combined with Turkcell’s vision that NFC will be one of the major means of payments for all other contactless transactions, brought about the inevitable service launch for Turkcell.

Sonum: What will be the main use cases for your service?

Ergi Sener: Single tap use cases that mainly combine payment with loyalty and couponing applications as well as public transportation will be the main use cases of Turkcell Cep-T Cüzdan. Since, mobile phones have more and more signifi cant roles in our lives, many different use cases can also be formed such as access and ID systems, ticketing, etc. Since, payment seems will be the killer application of the mobile wallet, initially Turkcell Cep-T Cüzdan focused on enabling card payments, specifi cally contactless retail payments at the POS. Yapı Kredi Bank was the fi rst service provider that took part in Turkcell Cep-T Cüzdan. After Yapı Kredi, Garanti Bank also completed its integration and launched its Services in Cep-T Cüzdan in July. Integration projects have been continuing with other banks, many of which will be fi nalised by the end of this year. We have also been piloting some other NFC applications such as access systems of Turkcell headquarters and lunch voucher payments in some selected restaurants with some Turkcell employees. Toll collection systems will also be integrated to Cep-T Cüzdan soon. Since mass transit applications are used on a daily basis, we think that they will be the catalyst for penetration.Other service providers operating in transportation, loyalty and ticketing businesses will be available for the service subscribers by the end of 2011 too and custom-ers will experience the real wallet concept with the convenience of their mobile equivalent.

Sonum: How will mobile payments integrate with the existing payment infrastructures? Initially many of the NFC based mobile wallets are focused on enabling card payments, specifi cally contactless retail payments at the POS.

Ergi Sener: Thus, the mobile wallet service design should support a multi card architecture. Card offerings from other issuers will follow over time progressively increasing available consumer choice and enabling a multi-bank environment with time. Today, many banks have issued new contactless enabled cards and the number of contactless terminals have been growing day by day (although the contactless acceptance network has not come to an expected level when compared to standard POS devices.)The POS manufacturers have decided to develop their new POS readers as contact-less embedded, thus, the number of contactless terminals will increase exponen-tially. This, coupled with an increase in NFC enabled handsets and SIMs, will make NFC payments reach a siginifi cant level. So the number of contactless acceptance points and usage areas should be increased in order to provide penetration. The promise of the mobile wallet is more than contactless transactions and mobile phone and network capabilities, mobile wallets will be changing how we make commerce and will change consumer shopping habits. There can be many op-portunities with the use of mobile wallets, but this requires a transformation in that customers need to get famialir with using their handsets for these applications.

Sonum: What are some of the key considerations other stakeholders need to take when it comes to rolling out NFC payments?

Ergi Sener: A business model and technical requirements should be formed with the consensus of all the stakeholders in the ecosystem. And, the interoperability should be provided both on a technical and strategic level nationally and inter-nationally. Some companies should lead in all these processes to give accelerate progress. As Turkcell, we tried to take this responsibility and developed our end to end platform with the participation of related parties. The NFC ecosystem is one of the biggest and most complex environments, thus all stakeholders need to work cooperatively and in an harmony.

Sonum: What attracted you to speak at Mobile Money Global?

Ergi Sener: I want to present Turkcell’s approach to mobile payments and NFC, and our multi-application platform, especially as this became a widely cited case study in the GSMA’s Pay-Buy-Mobile group, we want to share our experience both techni-cally and strategically through many of our innovative solutions.

By 2014 mobile money transaction volumes in Asia Pacifi c will exceed

US$316 billion and there will be 622 million mobile payments users in the

region with over 62 billion use cases.

Domestic and international mobile money transfers, prepaid airtime

transfer, mobile banking and salary disbursement, bill payment and loan

collection through the mobile channel are just some of the services in

demand from consumers in developed and developing markets.

In markets such as the Philippines, India and Indonesia, mobile network

operators and banks have an opportunity to increase access to fi nancial

services to the millions of under banked mobile phone users...

For the last 5 years, NFC has already been a key driver for mobile payments

in Japan and South Korea for transport and retail purchases. Now, we see

this trend spreading to other markets including Singapore and Malaysia.

Asia Pacifi c is the fastest growing

region for mobile money...

Mobile Health Explained: How Orange Austria have made their mHealth services a success

Earlier this month we caught up with 2 of our expert speakers, to fi nd out

what they are working on and where they think the industry is headed.

Earlier this month we caught up with one of our speakers, Jeurgen Pillinger, New Business Development Manager, Orange Austria and here is what he had to say:

Could you tell us a bit about Orange Austria’s mHealth services?

What we have done in the latest one and a half years is to set up a remote patient monitoring system for the chronic diseases diabetes and hypertension. After a 12 month trial we went live June last year and since then we’ve been selling the programme on the market quite well. We’ve got fi rst results and now we are looking forward to expand it to various other diseases like COPD, ECG and looking into the whole lifestyle and

wellness part as well.

What do you think are the key challenges faced by the mHealth industry?

To be honest there are various key challenges, which there are fi rst hand in regu-lated countries like Austria or the rest of Europe, there is quite a lot of regulation which poses some problems because the system is not set up yet for mhealth services so when you talk to doctors they say ‘it is a really good solution, but where are we going to fi t it in the regular system of social security?’. Social securities have already allocated some budget in Austria [but] they don’t really know how to use it on the various projects there. You know, when it comes to patients of yours you have to solve the different issues like data privacy, what we did by getting everything certifi ed by the data privacy commissions in Austria and to adapt them to new technologies which are now being used in the health system.

Where do you think mHealth is headed and what current and potential future developments excite you the most?

I think it is a big opportunity as a new market which evolves from the use of mobile technologies and you can now use them for the health sector as well. I think there are various opportunities, from remote patient monitoring, to go into lifestyle prevention market to just have someone accompanying your daily life, to ambient assisted living. So I think there are various opportunities for various players and I think we’ll see quite a lot of people and companies going into the market and doing some really exciting stuff there.

Could you tell us a bit about what delegates can expect to learn from your pres-entation at this year’s Mobile Health conference?

What I am trying to give is feedback on what we got from the market and pass it on to the delegates. Give them some insight on what we did from start of the idea, over the trial to the launch, what problems we faced, what success stories we have and what the outlook is so I think it is very important to give some feedback of actual projects that are in the market and just tell people what problems, challenges and success factors they might face.

What were your thoughts on last year’s Mobile Health conference?

It was a very well organised conference and it was good to meet people from all over the world and also from countries like India and Bangladesh and from African countries, just to see what health is in their defi nition which is completely different from what we might see it. So from an educational point of view, from a reminder point of view, from getting people to know different points in their health system to just really attacking chronicle diseases so it was a good mix and I’m looking forward to this year again.

See Jeurgen Pillinger speak on conference day one at 13.10 and 14.40 and on conference day two at 11.10.

What mHealth services is O2 Health offering?

We work with NHS and private healthcare organisations and we offer them services around helping them to deliver their services that they deliver to patients more effi ciently. So for exam-ple access to medical records on the move and documentation and those kind of things, we have a telehealth solution coming out in the latter part of the year that will deliver the ability for patients

to have remote consultation with healthcare professionals and help them as they see fi t. We also have a solution coming to market which is in the fi xed telecare space and makes that completely mobile, the red button panic alarm, so they have a panic alarm which gives people the functionality to track and move around.

How do you feel that the mHealth industry has developed over the last couple of years? What has changes?

I would say the interesting thing is that I don’t look at it as mhealth or ehealth as I just look at it as health. I’ve always perceived that this is about providing health solutions for patients. It’s about providing health related solutions, making sure that patients have access to the healthcare professionals, look after their health and manage it whether they are in or out of home. It’s about providing health re-lated solutions and providing better access. The fact that that it might be delivered through a mobile versus fi xed solution makes little difference, it’s about delivering a health solution.

What would you like healthcare providers to know about mHealth?

For me it’s about the opportunity to look at the way they deliver solutions and the way they manage their processes now and we know the focus is about deliver-ing care as much as possible in the community to the patient if we can. It’s about

delivering solutions and looking at being able to deliver them in a different way. The focus is to deliver care as much as possible in the community and for me it’s about delivering solutions and looking at the way that those solutions are delivered now and help them draft those solutions to help them deliver them as close to the patients’ home as possible, rather than using the traditional route which is to bring them to the hospital and treating them there.

What are the biggest challenges facing the industry today?

There are issues around patient data and data security. There are issues around the use of technology – some people still have fears around the use of technol-ogy which makes them reluctant to manage patients in a different way. There is a perceived risk they have around what technology can or can’t do.

What can attendees of Mobile Health 2011 expect from your presentation?

It will be about how we can deliver innovative solutions to help patients man-age their own health and manage their own health and manage their wellbeing differently than they do currently. It’ll be about talking about some of the proven solutions we have put into the market and it will challenge people’s way of thinking about the healthcare market. Just because it has always been done that way doesn’t mean it has to continue to always be done that way.

What are you most looking forward to about Mobile Health 2011?

I look forward to the questions, which probably most people don’t. Particularly at international ones like this, I look forward to the interaction, the opportunity you have to hear and see what people are developing in different parts of the world and in different countries.

See O2 Health’s, Kim Guest, speak on conference day two at 09.10.
