    HistoryLangeVoorhout

    TheLangeVoorhoutAvenue(Voorhoutwithemphasisonthesecondsyllable)isoneofthemostfamousstreetsoftheDutchcityofTheHague.ThefirstbuildingsattheLangeVoorhoutappearedaroundthebeginningofthe15thcentury.ThecurrentMonasterychurch(Kloosterkerk)isoneofthefewbuildingsthatremainedoftheMonastrythatwasbuiltinthe15thcentury.TheLangeVoorhoutowesitsnametobeinganoffshootoftheHaagseBos(TheHagueForest).ItscharacteristicL-shapecameintoexistencebythecultivationoftheLangeVijverberg(1375-1400)andthestripoflandbetweentheHogeNieuwstraatand

    theVoorhout(1400-1475).

    16thcenturyDuringastayinTheHaguein1536,EmperorKarelVcommandedtoplantfourrowsoflindentreesattheLangeVoorhout.ThesetreesstillgivetheLangeVoorhoutastatelyappearance.17thcenturyInthegoldenagetheLangeVoorhoutisthemeetingpointoftheTheHaguebeaumonde,wheretheycouldsaunter.OntherequestofPrinceMauritsanattempt

    wasmadetocreateacitymoatoftheLangeVoorhout.Thisfailed,probablybecausetheLangeVoorhoutispartlylocatedonasandyhill.

    18thcentury

    Intheolddays,theLangeVoorhoutwasfullofsmallhomes.Inthe18thcenturyalargepartofthesehousesweredemolishedandreplacedbythestatelybuildingsoutthererightnow.Manyofthesepropertiesarestatemonuments.

    19thcenturyFrom1811till1813theLangeVoorhoutwascalledtheCourNapoleonandtheLangeVijverbergtheCourdelImpratrice.Lateronitwasdecidedtorestoretheoldnames.

    21stcenturyIn2009,theLangeVoorhouthasbeenrenovated.Severalconstructionshavebeenplaced,includingonetoprotecttherootsofthelindentrees.Also,severalconcreteslabshavebeenplacedtocarrythesculpturesoftheannualexhibition.Ashellpathcoversthese

    constructions,likeitusedtodointheolddays.ThegoldencrownsonthestreetlanternsindicatetheroutethatthegoldencarriageofherMajestyQueenBeatrixoftheNetherlandsridesduringPrinsjesdag.Thelightinginthelanternsiscontrollableandcanbeaimedattheartobjects

    Well-knownbuildingsWell-knownbuildingsattheLangeVoorhoutincludetheKloosterkerk,thePagehuis,thebuildingoftheSupremeCourt,HotelDesIndes,thePalaceLangeVoorhout(nowadaysthe'Escher'Museum),andontheothersidePulchriStudio.InadditiontotheseoftenhugebuildingsalsothenarrowestHouseintheHague(1meter83wide)istobefoundthere.

    TheLangeVoorhoutPalace(EscherinHetPaleis)iscertainlytheplacetoseetheoriginalsoffamousworkslikeBelvdre,AscendingandDescending,DayandNightandpartsoftheMetamorphosisseries.TheLangeVoorhoutPalacehasbeenownedbytheRoyalFamilyforalmostahundredyears.In1896itwasboughtbyQueenEmma,thegreat-grandmotherofthecurrentQueenBeatrix.Shehadamongotherthingsthecentralstairwayconstructed,whichwasmeantforonlythreepeople:theQueenandthetwomostimportantLadiesoftheCourt.Alltheothershadtotakethe(yellow)servantstairway,stillinuseforthesecondfloor,ortheyhadtotaketheonethathasnowbeenreplacedbyanelevator.DownstairsinCafMC(theformerkitchenofthepalace)youcanseewhattheinteriorofthepalacelookedlikeinEmmastimeandyouwillfindportraitsofhergranddaughterQueenJulianaandherfamily.

    TheAmericanandtheBritishEmbassyarelocatedattheLangeVoorhout.Evenbeforetheattacksof11

    September2001,thesebuildingswereheavilyguarded.TheUSEmbassywillsoonbemovedtoanotherlocation.TheSwissEmbassyislocatedonnr.42andistheformerhomeofTheodorebarondeSmethofDeurne.

    Monuments

    ApartfromallthemonumentalbuildingstherearethreedifferentmonumentsontheLangeVoorhout:themonumentofQueenEmma,themonumentforDukeKarelBern(h)ardvonSaxonWeimar(1792-Liebenstein(Saxen),1862)andthepump.ThemonumentofQueenEmmaisakindofsofa.

    TheHaguescurrentroleashosttointernationalorganizationsandtheinternationalcommunityispartofatraditiondatingbackmorethan750years.

    In1998thecitycelebratedits750thanniversarywithagrandcommemoration,andthecitysinternationalcommunitywaswell-acknowledged.

    Historianstodaygenerallyagreethatthecitywasfoundedin1248byCountWilliamIIofHolland.Thenameoriginatedfromhim:desGravenHage,ortheCountsWall(orhedge),thusTheHague.

    Hospitablecity

    PastgenerationshelpedtoturnTheHagueintothehospitablecityitistodayadiversecommunityofpeoplefrommanydifferentbackgroundsandcountries.Inpastcenturiesithasbeenhosttointernationalvisitors,butalsoprovidedasafehavenforoutcasts.

    Inthisrespectthecityshistoryisinterwovenwith,anddeeplyembeddedin,thehistoryoftheNetherlands.Itisnoaccidentthatthenationalconstitutionexplicitlystatesthepromotionoftheinternationallegalorder.Inaclimatethatwasremarkablytolerantandintellectualbythestandardsoftheirdays,renownedscholarssuchasErasmusandHugoGrotiuswereabletoflourishhereandmaketheirbodiesofideasknowntotheworld.

    ImportanteventsInmorerecentcenturies,thecityreturnedtotheinternationalspotlightasalocationforimportanteventsandinstitutionssuchasthePeaceConferencesof1899and1907,theInternationalCourtofJustice,theInternationalCriminalTribunalfortheformerYugoslavia(ICTY)andtheInternationalCriminalCourt(ICC).TheseandmanyotherimportantdevelopmentsarestronglylinkedtoTheHagueandtheactivitieshostedhere.
