READY TO LEARNREADY TO SUCCEED

INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE

JUNIOR HIGH

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

Common Core State Standards

A set of academic expectations

Provide a consistent and clear understanding for student learning

Designed to be robust and relevant to the real world

Reflect the knowledge and skills needed for college and careers

Compete successfully in the global economy

Five Tips to Support the Common Core State Standards

Expose your child to read “books worth reading”- great writers; challenging content

Ask your child questions about what they are reading- cite evidence; give examples

Read nonfiction-informational text

Talk math with your child- reasoning skills; real-world application

Junior High

Students become independent learners necessary to navigate the demands of high school and beyond.

Students develop social, academic, and physical skills to provide for a smooth transition to high school

Apply the knowledge they gain

Develop a productive work ethic

Junior High cont.

Take pride in their work

Accept consequences for their decisions

Cooperate with others

Characteristics

Desire independence

Sensitive to peer relationships

Need structure and support for success at home and at school

Sixth Grade

A transition year

Preparing for the responsibilities that lie ahead

Higher expectations for academics and behavior

Learn organizational skills, independent thinking, and problem-solving skills

Teachers work diligently to help each child become more independent , self-assured, organized, and goal oriented.

Complete the assignment planner and use it.

Build on previous learned skills

Manage classwork/homework without parent involvement

Shore up weak areas-reading, writing, math, etc.

Eighth Grade cont.

Complete the assignment planner and use it!

High school visit for a smooth transition

Active Learners

Pay attention in class

Think critically- ASK/ANSWER in a thoughtful manner

Use class time productively

Turn in all assignments on time

Come to class prepared

Produce quality work

Assignments

Classwork, homework, long-range projects, etc. are expected to be turned in on time.

Regardless of the excuse, if the project or assignment is not turned in on the established date, the teacher may lower the grade.

If a major test, project, or assignment was scheduled for the day the student was absent, and it has been previously announced verbally and/or in writing, the student should be prepared to take the test or turn in the project or assignment on the day of the return to school.

Homework

Independent practice of material taught in the classroom

Integral part of the learning process

Extend learning through projects

Reinforcement of daily lessons

May be averaged into the students overall academic progress

Homework cont.

Each day’s assignments will be posted in the classroom

Each day’s assignments will be posted online on the IJP school’s website

GRADING

The goals of education are accomplished by the pursuit of knowledge and understanding rather than the pursuit of grades.

Junior High teachers believe students earn their grades; they are not given to them. If students follow instructions explicitly and put in the effort their grades will reflect it. If they study and do their homework nightly, they will do well on assignments.

Grading expectations are determined by each teacher

PowerSchool

A web-based student information system

Parent access for child’s grades

Teachers update class grades on a weekly basis

Extra Credit

Assigned to connect lessons in class

Offered to all students

Will be due on the assigned date (no exceptions)

Is not a “quick fix” to raise a student’s grade

Points assigned will not outweigh the importance placed on the academic standards to be mastered

Teachers do not have to offer extra credit

Assignment Planner

A tool that helps students take ownership of their education and time.

As this positive behavior is continually reinforced, it becomes a habit they will use their entire lives.

The junior high teachers' websites are maintained as a secondary resource for parents, and do not take the place of the assignment planner.

Dress Code

Students are expected to dress in a manner that reflects self-respect at all times when in the school building.

Neatness, cleanliness, and good grooming are basic goals and norms of our school.

Students are responsible to building a sense of school community

Students are expected to follow the school handbook

Parents are expected to reinforce these expectations

Delivery of School Related Items

Ongoing effort to teach responsibility and accountability, and avoid classroom disruptions

Forgotten items brought to school by parents should be on an emergency basis only

Any deliveries will remain at the office and retrieved at lunch or at the end of the day

Students will not be notified during class instruction

Students are not permitted to phone home for forgotten items

IJP Parent-Student Handbook

Please read it carefully

Support our efforts by making sure your child follows our schools’ expectations

Its purpose is to create a positive learning climate that generates communication and an orderly environment essential for optimal student performance and success
