Common Core State Standards
A set of academic expectations
Provide a consistent and clear understanding for student learning
Designed to be robust and relevant to the real world

Five Tips to Support the Common Core State Standards
Expose your child to read “books worth reading”- great writers; challenging content
Ask your child questions about what they are reading- cite evidence; give examples
Read nonfiction-informational text
Talk math with your child- reasoning skills; real-world application

Assignments
Classwork, homework, long-range projects, etc. are expected to be turned in on time.
Regardless of the excuse, if the project or assignment is not turned in on the established date, the teacher may lower the grade.
If a major test, project, or assignment was scheduled for the day the student was absent, and it has been previously announced verbally and/or in writing, the student should be prepared to take the test or turn in the project or assignment on the day of the return to school.
Homework
Independent practice of material taught in the classroom
Integral part of the learning process
Extend learning through projects
Reinforcement of daily lessons
May be averaged into the students overall academic progress
Homework cont.
Each day’s assignments will be posted in the classroom
Each day’s assignments will be posted online on the IJP school’s website

GRADING
The goals of education are accomplished by the pursuit of knowledge and understanding rather than the pursuit of grades.
Junior High teachers believe students earn their grades; they are not given to them. If students follow instructions explicitly and put in the effort their grades will reflect it. If they study and do their homework nightly, they will do well on assignments.
Grading expectations are determined by each teacher
PowerSchool
A web-based student information system
Parent access for child’s grades
Teachers update class grades on a weekly basis
Extra Credit
Assigned to connect lessons in class
Offered to all students
Will be due on the assigned date (no exceptions)
Is not a “quick fix” to raise a student’s grade
Points assigned will not outweigh the importance placed on the academic standards to be mastered
Teachers do not have to offer extra credit
Assignment Planner
A tool that helps students take ownership of their education and time.
As this positive behavior is continually reinforced, it becomes a habit they will use their entire lives.
The junior high teachers' websites are maintained as a secondary resource for parents, and do not take the place of the assignment planner.
Dress Code
Students are expected to dress in a manner that reflects self-respect at all times when in the school building.
Neatness, cleanliness, and good grooming are basic goals and norms of our school.
Students are responsible to building a sense of school community
Students are expected to follow the school handbook
Parents are expected to reinforce these expectations
Delivery of School Related Items
Ongoing effort to teach responsibility and accountability, and avoid classroom disruptions
Forgotten items brought to school by parents should be on an emergency basis only
Any deliveries will remain at the office and retrieved at lunch or at the end of the day
Students will not be notified during class instruction
Students are not permitted to phone home for forgotten items
