English 1 hour
LO: I can recall the names of
collective nouns to describe
groups of animals
Watch Mrs Gingell’s video-
see link below. (I introduce it
saying Tuesday but of course
it is Monday- apologies!)
On the sheet below complete
the missing words and then
research and add five more
collective nouns for animals at
the bottom.
Start on the far left-hand side
of your paper and work neatly
across the page, with your
letters sitting on the line.
Parents, please upload this
English work, thank you.
LO I know what an adjective is I can choose interesting adjectives to enrich my writing. Watch Mrs Gingell’s lesson- see link below. Play the adjective game with your family! You will need: 1 A variety of small objects (shiny spoon, plastic animal, coin, dice, ornament, lego brick, key etc...) 2 A feely bag to put them in (your PE bag would be good!) 3 A timer With your family sit in a circle and take turns to put your hand in the bag and draw out an object. You have 45 seconds to come up with as many describing words (adjectives) as you can! At school we often call adjectives ‘wow words’ Then, find a really interesting picture from a magazine or a photograph. Cut it out and stick it on paper. Label it with an adjective to go with each verb (eg a prickly hedgehog) Parents, please upload this English work today, thank you.
L.O: I can retell the story of the
Owl Babies using actions.
Listen to the story of Mrs
Edwards reading Owl Babies
again Zoom Link 1.
We are now going to put actions
to the words, as this will help us
to remember how to tell the
story.
Watch Mrs Edwards’ video on
zoom link 2.
Practise the actions by copying
the video. We will be performing
this in class altogether next week.
If you would like to record a
video or upload a photo of you
carrying out the actions.
Parents, please upload
this English work today, thank
you.
L.O I can create a story map to
retell owl babies.
Today the children are going to draw the pictures (story map) that match the actions and story of Owl Babies.
Watch Mrs Edwards’ video zoom
link 3.
On the piece of paper attached,
the children will draw pictures
and arrows to show how the
story progresses through
pictures. You can use the
example to help you. Or you can
create your own pictures.
Once you have finished, have a
go at telling the story using the
actions and story map.
Parents, please upload
this English work today, thank
you.
L.O I can write questions to
Mummy Owl.
We are talking about question
words. These start a question
sentence such as who, what, when,
where and why. We will look at
the question mark as it needs to be
at the end of the sentence.
Watch Mrs Edwards’ zoom link 4.
Write out 5 questions on the
attached sheet to ask Mummy Owl.
Please check that you have completed all your English work on Owl Babies (Starting with the Owl Babies Title Page Wednesday 24th February) and bring these into school next week.
Parents, please upload this English
work today, thank you.

WORLD BOOK DAY
On the 9:30am morning zoom session today we are asking the children to bring along clues to a book. This could be a costume, a prop, a drawing or the book itself. We will then be able to guess and share what book they are representing and enjoy talking about books on World Book Day. The children are very welcome to dress up as a book character. There is no pressure to dress up this year in costume unless children would like to. Activity:

Session 2: Mending a Torn Umbrella: Part 2 1st March 2021
* you will need a pipette, a syringe or a small squeezy bottle to drop water from
Science Content i. distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made ii. identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal iii. describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials iv. compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties
Working Scientifically
Working Scientifically i) asking simple questions and recognising that they can be answered in different way ii) observing closely, using simple equipment iii) performing simple tests iv) identifying and classifying v) using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions vi) gathering and recording data to help in answering questions
Teaching Objectives · Investigate the materials for their useful properties, considering questions such as: how
can we know that this material will not let the rain through? How can we test it? · Use pipettes to simulate raindrops and experiment with the different materials · Observe and record the results · Make hypotheses about why certain materials do not let water through · Consider the question: if you did not have an umbrella, and it was raining hard, what other
everyday objects could you use to keep the rain off your head? Why would they work?
Key Vocabulary: waterproof, absorbent, breaks/tears, materials, properties
Resources Investigating Umbrella Material resource, an umbrella, samples of
materials including a selection of suitable fabrics (hessian, felt, paper, cotton, plastic, oil skin, carpet etc) and also unsuitable materials such as metal and wood, cameras or recording devices, pipettes, jugs of water, bowls or large rimmed jugs and tape.
Weblinks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usklsV_UL_4 - A school in Coventry investigating waterproof materials.
Before the session: get out the variety of fabric and materials you were using last week.... foil. Tissue paper, cling film, carpet, cotton, nylon, hessian, felt, velvet etc Place the different materials (from the previous session) on the table in front of you. Choose material at random and ask your child to identify one of its properties. Then ask if it is suitable for mending a hole in the umbrella, or if it is unsuitable. Do this with several of the materials. Talk about the materials, considering questions such as: How can we know that this material will not let the rain through? How can we test it? Then show your little one the pipettes, and how they work, and ask: What part can these play in our investigations? Listen to your child’s ideas on using a pipette/squeezy bottle to drop water from and guide them towards forming their own ideas about an investigation into the waterproof qualities of the materials. Invite your child to share their thoughts. Ask them: What shall we use the pipettes for? Why is it important that we don't just pour a jug of water over the different materials? (The pipettes can simulate raindrops, we would use up all of the water really quickly, we might pour more water on one material than another, so it wouldn't be fair). Ask them to select the materials that they decided to investigate. Give your child a pipette/small squeezy bottle and a jug of water.
Activities: Supported investigation: Ask your child to tape their material onto the opening of one of the bowls, making sure
it is tight and secure. They will need to do this with each of the materials they have selected. Then they need to decide how many droplets of water they will place on each of the materials and set off! Encourage your child to make notes as they go, including how many droplets they decide is a sufficient amount of water and what happens to the droplets on each of the materials. Ask them to look closely at the droplets on top of the material (are the droplets sitting on top of the material? Or are they being absorbed?) and also to look at the underneath of the material (is the underneath dry or wet? has the material absorbed the droplets?) Ask your child to write their observations on their sheet. There is a challenge at the end of the resource sheet which gives opportunity for extended writing on what they have been investigating. Allow some quiet time in the session for this. Some children may have their own ideas for how to investigate the materials in a fair way. They can be allowed to try out their own investigation and to share their findings with you. They may find it hard to control all the variables but be able to see and explain a pattern in their results.
Plenary When you have investigated your materials make hypotheses about why certain materials do not let water through. Choose the material that you think is the most suitable for mending an umbrella. Congratulate them for solving the problem by thinking and acting like real scientists. Then ask your child to consider: if you did not have an umbrella, and it was raining hard, what other everyday objects could you could use to keep the rain off your head? Why would this work?
Outcomes
Children will · Understand, through exploration and investigation, that some materials are more suitable than others
for mending an umbrella because of their physical properties · Be able to articulate their scientific reasoning for selecting and investigating certain materials
RE Tuesday. Make a list of people you think deserve a special welcome, can
you explain why you have chosen these people?
Draw the special people you have chosen.

Celebrate Stories. Love Reading!
This week we are celebrating book week and World Book Day on March 4th.
Spending 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories can make a crucial difference to your future and it’s fun for all
involved. You can read together anywhere from breakfast to bedtime!
Following on from the half-term reading challenge, we would love to see when and where you are reading. Below is a
triangular piece of bunting. Please take a photograph or draw a picture of you sharing a story with a family
member, friend, pet or even a cuddly toy. Stick the photo or picture onto the triangular bunting, you may add
embellishments if you wish. These bunting triangles will be displayed in your class book corner for all to enjoy! Please
return your bunting to school on Monday 8th March. We can’t wait to see you and your bunting then!
