South Langley's Vista D'Oro Farm and
Marketplace welcomes us to their
dinner table with a festive feast.
The Surrey Christmas Bureau
embraces the true holiday spirit by
lending a hand to families in need.
Need some inspiration for what to
put under the tree? Our gift guide
offers plenty of unique ideas.
In this business, we often fi nd ourselves working way ahead of the eight ball, sometimes months in advance of seasons,
events and holidays. Planning a summer issue during the typical
torrential rains of April, scoping out cozy fall fashions while dressed in fl ip fl ops and a summer dress – it's all par for the course around here.
It can be a bit confusing, to say the least. When it comes time to brainstorm ideas for
our holiday issue of Indulge, it's not uncommon for the calendar to still read September.
As someone who has always enjoyed this season, being thrust into the world of Christmas decor and festive recipes weeks before Halloween has, to be honest, put a bit of a damper on my holiday spirit.
It's not that I don't enjoy immersing myself in all things merry and bright, but when you have to keep it up for more than three months, it can get to be a little much.
However, the opportunity to meet people like Shelley Grant – a single mom-of-three who shares her struggles this time of year, and how the Surrey Christmas Bureau has changed her life – instantly puts my holiday grumbling into perspective.
If being able to share the inspirational story
of the generosity of strangers – and the strength of those who seek help – means I endure an extra month and a half of seasonal splendor, so be it.
In addition to our story on the Christmas Bureau, this
issue of Indulge has plenty of festive fun. We visit Vista D'Oro Farms and Winery,
where owners Patrick and Lee Murphy have prepared a mouth-watering meal to share.
Beautiful Historic Stewart Farm House sets the stage for our fashion this issue, featuring exquisite dresses sure to turn heads this holiday season.
Our gift-giving guide provides inspiration for those looking for that perfect present for under the tree, no matter what your budget.
Wine columnist John Schreiner breaks down the dos and don'ts of wine gifting.
And we offer pages of tips for all things festive – including how to host an amazing holiday party, where to go to fi nd a Christmas wonderland and how to take some time for yourself before the stress of the season does too much damage.
Here's to a safe and happy holiday season to all our readers – see you in the New Year!

Vista D'oro Farms helps get you out of the kitchen and into the fun
6 WINTER 2013 INDULGE
Who wouldn’t like to turn
Murphy’s Law on its head
for the holidays? Even Mrs.
Claus could use that kind
of a hand in the kitchen.
After all, in a world in which “anything that
can go well, will go well,” holiday hosting
would become a far more entertaining
proposition.
Fortunately, Patrick and Lee Murphy of Vista
D’oro Farms and Winery, tucked away on 10
acres in South Langley, are eminently able to
bring an assist to the table.
Their topsy-turvy take on
Murphy’s Law aside, who better
to turn to than one of the last
houses on Santa’s least known
list? This year’s Apple, Scotch
and Bacon preserve and Craft
Beer Jam were made upon
special client request, and Mrs.
Claus has doubled her order of
Spiced Cranberry and Icewine
preserve.
(Little known, but entirely commonsensical,
the ever-jolly one actually carries three lists,
the third being a shopping list which requires
an empty sleigh for the return trip.) Vista
D’oro’s fl agship fortifi ed walnut wine, along
with their Fig and Walnut Wine preserve has
been mainstays of the North Pole cheese plate
for some time.
Fortunately, as when entertaining, the
Murphys have made enough for everyone.
Just 45 minutes south of Vancouver, for over
a decade Vista D’oro has been entertaining
guests from the world over, all drawn by a
culinary agritourism destination as renowned
for its good spirit as its pantry and sheer
beauty of location.
Aptly named for the twin peaks of the
Golden Ears mountains in the near distance,
Vista d’Oro’s view from the Campbell Valley
changes its graces only with the season. As
a sub-region of the Fraser Valley, it gets a bit
more sun and a touch less rain. Come the fi rst
blanketing of snow, Vista D’oro Farms looks
every inch the postcard setting for the perfect
Christmas dinner – and it is.
Rule number one for bringing peace on
Earth into the kitchen? When it comes to the
main event, keep it simple and enjoy your
company.
“We do Christmas dinner here every year and
everyone wants their traditional favourites.
My dad needs his canned cranberry sauce.
Christmas isn’t the day to try and push the
envelope in the kitchen,” says Lee with a grin.
Her grandmother’s stuffi ng recipe of butter,
onion, celery, wine, bread and poultry
seasoning has set the standard for generations.
Somewhat less traditional is the fact that two
smaller turkeys are taken to table. The dark
meat became so popular, the single big bird
simply no longer suffi ced.
“You certainly don’t have to make everything
yourself. My aunt makes her mashed potatoes.
My mom and dad do all the vegetables, and
I do up some modern brussels sprouts with
bacon.”
The fond familiarity of the annual family
feast aside, Lee and Patrick
Murphy are far better known
for their Feast of Fields
hosting and preserves than
their reserve in matters
culinary.
What began with selling
jams at market in 2002
and planting fi ve acres of
Schoenberger, Foche, Ortega,
Pinot Gris and Siegerrebe
grapes a few years later has
evolved into a well-rounded and thoroughly
tasteful destination for food and wine lovers
year-round.
With the Farmgate Shop and Market moved
and merged with the winery tasting room on
the other side of the farm, Lee’s production
kitchen now hums away in the main barn with
Patrick’s wine works next door and a cooking
class kitchen and storage atop. The Vista
D'Oro Farmgate Shop & Tasting Room bustles
Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until
5 p.m.
The tranquil view belies the fact that Vista
D’oro’s mainstays have never been busier –
which is not to say Lee and Patrick don’t take
time to enjoy the festivities with friends and
family alike.
After all, it is a love of good food, drink
and people that has propelled them in their
endeavours from the start.
Especially during the holidays, though, Lee’s
key to entertaining is fi rst and foremost simple
– pick a menu you can do, plan ahead and
plan to have fun.
“I don’t do dinner parties. I do cocktail
parties. I do it because I want to be out there
with my company,” says Lee. “Think like a
caterer and everybody has a great time – host
included. By all means get creative, but get
organized too. Even a little attention to 'mise
en place' is a big thing.
"You just need to remember that a lot can be
done ahead of time and that the guests aren’t
coming for the food. They’re coming for you.”
For this issue of Indulge, Lee has created a
menu that makes working such wonders easy,
drawing upon her personal pantry of preserves
and the spirit of playful good taste that fuels
everything the Murphys do.
Whether you’re looking for the ultimate
epicurean stocking stuffers or to add some
inspiration to your pantry, Vista D’oro offers a
creative cornucopia year-round – though their
preserves change with the season.
That said, Fall’s Caramel Apple with Dark
Rum preserve sounds delicious well into the
New Year.

Green Walnut & Truffl e Pizzams
Pizza and jam – who knew? We certainly had no idea until Mary McKay and I discovered it at the Feast of Fields – she was making pizza and I was making fancy peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Pizzam! It happened, and has been a go-to gourmet bite since.

Grill one side of each pizzam until golden; remove from grill and top grilled side with preserves, salami and cheese.
Return to grill – ungrilled side down. Grill until cheese is melted, remove, top with dressed frisee and drizzle with truffl e oil if desired – and Pizzam!

The kindness of strangers
by Melissa Smalley photos by Boaz Joseph and Evan Seal
The Surrey Christmas Bureau is
gearing up for a busy season of
helping families in need
No matter how much we talk about the meaning of
Christmas being a mixture of family, faith and celebration,
for most children, it wouldn't be Christmas without the
presents.
Yet there are families not far from you whose year-round struggles
to make ends meet are compounded as the holiday season nears, and
efforts to provide a little holiday happiness seem futile.
For single mother-of-three Shelley Grant,
those diffi culties are all too familiar.
It's a tough topic to discuss for the
32-year-old, who lives in Surrey with
daughter Kayleigh, 12, and sons Jayven, 6,
and Malakai, 18 months.
As a stay-at-home mom, Grant fi nds
creative ways to get by each month – she
has recently taken up ‘coupon clipping’ in
an effort to garner savings on her shopping
bills – but admits that the holiday season
often comes with a sense of burden more so
than a sense of good cheer.
That is, until a few years ago, when Grant
found the courage to ask for help – something she knows is diffi cult for
others in her shoes.
A client of the Surrey Christmas Bureau, her family receives presents,
gift cards, diapers, formula and food vouchers from generous donors
across the city at a time when they need it the most, easing the stress
of the holiday season and providing her kids with a fun, memorable
Christmas morning. Grant hopes that by sharing her family's
appreciation publicly, it will encourage others – both those who need
help and those who can offer it – to get involved.
The impact the bureau has had on her family, Grant says, is
indescribable.
“It’s hard to explain,” she tells Indulge, as tears well up in her eyes.
“The generosity of people is amazing. There are so many things that my
kids have got that I would never have been able to get them.”
Having used the Christmas Bureau’s services for fi ve years off and on,
Grant recalls that, at fi rst, it was not easy accepting help from strangers.
“I have a hard time asking for help, so at
fi rst I was really uncomfortable,” she says,
encouraging others in her situation to visit
the bureau.
“The fi rst year we had a sponsor, and
meeting them… the emotions…,” Grant
trails off.
“I just remember her bawling,” Kayleigh
chimes in with a giggle.
• • •
The Grants are among hundreds
of families helped each year by the
Surrey Christmas Bureau, according to
co-ordinator K.C. Gilroy.
Last holiday season, the bureau registered approximately 1,700
families, which translates to roughly 5,000 children in Surrey.
Another 200 or 300 families are referred to other agencies, such as the
Langley Christmas Bureau or Deltassist support society (see sidebar),
depending on where they live.
The high number of those who use the bureau speaks to how
widespread the need is throughout the community, but also to the vast
generosity of those willing to lend a hand, as no one who registers with
the bureau goes home empty-handed.
Surrey Christmas Bureau co-ordinator K.C. Gilroy
12 WINTER 2013 INDULGE
The history of lending a hand dates back far
beyond the Surrey Christmas Bureau’s offi cial
formation as a society in 1999.
“There’s always been Christmas assistance
of some kind in this community,” Gilroy says,
noting that churches often took the reins
throughout the fi rst several decades of the
20th century, followed by Surrey Community
Services and the food bank in more recent
years.
In its modern-day format, the bureau sets up
shop in early November – this year located at
10636 King George Blvd., in the old Buy Rite
Foods building – where dozens of volunteers
get to work registering applicants.
In order to qualify for help, families must
live within the boundaries of Surrey, must
have a child age 18 or younger and must be
low-income – as determined by the national
poverty line.
Of the 1,700 or so families that register,
around 600 are placed into the adopt-a-
family program, where they’re matched with
donors from the community. Donors make
contact with their adoptive families to fi nd out
the ages, interests and any particular ‘wish-
list’ items the children might have, then set
up a day and time to deliver all the goodies
– including food items and gift cards for
Christmas dinner.
Those who aren’t matched with donors
have the opportunity to return and browse
the large selection of donated toys and gift
cards, as well as an extensive used-items
department.
“It takes up a lot of room,” Gilroy said of
the ever-popular used section. “But people
go through it and they get household items,
warm clothing, boots, inline skates. It’s a
great reduce, reuse and recycle operation.”
Although things wrap up at the bureau
by Dec. 21, Gilroy makes a point of being
at the bureau on Christmas Eve, in case
someone happens to come by looking for
last-minute help.
A few years ago she was visited by a parole
offi cer the night before Christmas, wondering
if they’d be able to help a woman who was
just released from custody.
“It was the fi rst time she had her kids for
Christmas, and she had just been released,”
Gilroy explains, noting they were able to set
the woman up with a number of essential
items. “That’s why I hang around on
Christmas Eve.”
• • •
It takes a huge network of dedicated
volunteers and donors to ensure the Christmas
season runs smoothly at the bureau and for
those who seek its help.
With 127 active volunteers – performing
duties ranging from registration, stocking
and shopping to pickup and deliveries – the
bureau also receives a helping hand from a
range of community organizations, including
schools, sports teams and businesses.
“It’s amazing the diversity of people that
help us out,” Gilroy says.
But each year, as the number of families
seeking assistance grows, so does the need for
help. The biggest demand is for those willing
to sponsor a family – it could be a business,
a family or a group of friends wanting to give
back this holiday season.
If you can’t sponsor a family, simply taking
up a collection at your workplace and then
going on a shopping spree for toys to donate
is another great way to help.
“Items for teens are always tough for us –
things like Eagles tickets, hockey sticks or
cosmetics,” Gilroy said. “Even though they’re
a bit older, they still want to be a part of
Christmas.”
If you have a truck and are willing to
volunteer some time, drivers are also an
integral part of the bureau’s operations.
Becoming involved with the bureau is not
only a great way to help long-term Surrey
families, such as the Grants, but also those
who have arrived in the community from war-
torn regions across the world, seeking a safer
life for their families.
“I always say you can judge the global strife
by who’s in line at the Surrey bureau,” Gilroy
says, noting that last year they saw an infl ux of
Syrian families seeking help.
You can judge the global strife by who's in line at the Surrey bureau...

“The really moving thing for me is when a
family will come in and bring some toys or a
cheque and say, ‘six years ago, when we fi rst
came here, the Christmas bureau helped us,’”
she says. “It makes me love Canada that much
more, and love living here.”
• • •
The opportunity to give back to an
organization that has provided so much is
something Grant says she hopes for one day,
too. Without the bureau’s help, she says, she
doesn’t know what her family would do this
time of year.
“It’s just such an amazing organization, it
lifts your spirits at a time when you really need
it the most. I hope that one day, I’ll be able to
help other people out.”
As the countdown to Christmas morning gets
underway in the Grant household, the children
are busy deciding what to ask Santa for this
year. Grant, on the other hand, is counting her
blessings, and sending a message to all those
involved in the Surrey Christmas Bureau.
“Thank you, so much, on behalf of so
many people. You’ve helped to make such a
difference. Thank you.”

28 WINTER 2013 INDULGE
Role ModelThis issue's Indulge model Natalie Talson
is no stranger to the intense scrutiny and unrealistic standards set forth by the fashion industry.
The Langley native was discovered by a New York agent when she was just 14 years old; by 16, she was travelling the world, working her way up the fashion-industry ladder. The problem, according to those in the industry: she was too big.
At six feet tall and wearing a size six, Talson's measurements didn't quite fi t the mold of the typical fashion model.
"My hips were always a 37, and the maximum they'd allow was a 36," she explained. "That inch was the difference between being a supermodel and not being one."
Years of being told she needed to lose weight took its toll on Talson, who quit the business at the age of 20. She suffered from depression and severe insecurity issues, and sought the help of a counsellor.
When she was 22, she auditioned for the reality TV show Canada's Next Top Model on a whim and landed among the top10 fi nalists. She was eliminated after three episodes, again being told she was too big.
The experience solidifi ed Talson's negative view of the fashion industry but also her desire to do something more meaningful. She decided to pursue a career in helping troubled youth, and after studying to become a professional counsellor, has developed a workshop she presents to young girls in schools throughout the Lower Mainland.
She discusses body image, the media's portrayal of 'beauty' and its affect on women, her own struggles with depression and how to help women change their unhealthy beliefs about themselves.
"The more I do it, the more I live it," she explains. "Some of these girls struggle so much, and to be able to offer any kind of hope is just so profound to me."

'Tis the season for shopping, splurging and most importantly,
celebrating with friends and family.
Welcoming loved ones into your
home this time of year is a holiday
tradition for many, but unless you're a Martha
Stewart wannabe, hosting a festive party can
often be a stress-fi lled endeavour.
But that needn't be the case, according
to Langley photographer/blogger/hostess
extraordinaire Leanne Kinsmen, who shares
some unique ideas with Indulge readers that are
sure to make your next holiday party one to
remember.
First on the party-planning to-do list is to
decide what type of event you want to host. For
a smaller, more intimate affair with fewer guests, a sit-down dinner might
be a good option. However, if you plan on welcoming a larger crowd, a

buffet or cocktail-and-appetizer party is a
better way to go.
If you're concerned that your home might
be too small for the amount of people you'd
like to invite, consider an open house-style
event, where guests are welcome to come and
go at various times throughout the afternoon
or evening.
Next, you'll want to plan the food and drink
menu. According to Kinsmen, opting for food
items you can prepare well-
ahead of time will help ease
the burden on the day of
your gathering.
"I always plan to do as
much as I can ahead of time,
that way you're not leaving
everything for the day of the
party," she said. "That way,
you have a chance to enjoy
the party yourself."
The festive season is a
good excuse to pop open
some bubbly, which is why
Kinsmen recommends a self-
serve champagne bar.
Include a few champagne
options, plus orange juice
with orange slices and
strawberry puree with sliced-up strawberries,
so guests can put together a fruity drink of
their choice.
For party favours, Kinsemen recommends
wrapping up a special bottle of bubbly with
a personalized note attached, as a way for
guests to celebrate the end of the holiday
season and the new year that's to come.
If you're hosting a more family-friendly get-
together, Kinsmen suggests a delicious hot
cocoa bar, with a large carafe of hot water,
cocoa mix, marshmallows, peppermint,
sprinkles and caramel and chocolate drizzle.
For the personalized touch, special notes
can be attached to each mug with a festive
holiday message.
You'll want to enhance the Christmas spirit
around your home with festive music and
decor – but even simple touches can make a
big impact.
For Kinsmen's celebrations, she has opted
for a decor style she describes as "Rustic
Elegance."
"I like to mix old and new, as well as
different textures and
elements that you may not
normally pair together," she
explains.
"So using antique silver,
modern white porcelain
and rustic wood pieces, like
the cake stand and crates,
adds interest and draws it all
together."
Perhaps the most
important tip Kinsmen
shares with fellow party
hosters: make sure you have
enough food.
Especially at a party where
alcoholic beverages will
be served, having enough
goodies for guests to munch
on throughout the evening is essential.
Also, Kinsmen notes, hosts have a
responsibility to ensure their guests get home
safely once the celebrations wrap up.
"We always make people leave their keys,
and we'll decide if they're OK to drive."
If you're looking for some new, tasty
appetizer ideas to serve at your holiday
function this year, Kinsmen has shared a few
delicious and easy recipes that are sure to
leave your guests feeling merry.

3 cuts of fi let mignon (If you can't fi nd fi let mignon, a top sirloin would also work)large pinch saltlarge pinch pepper1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
Instructions:
First, soak your skewers in water for approximately 30 minutes. While skewers are soaking, cut Filet mignon into bite size cubes.
Place beef in bowl, then add 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper.
Marinade beef cubes in mix for 30 minutes.Once beef is ready, place two cubes per
skewer. In a lightly oiled hot pan, (I like to use a
griddle) grill beef for three minutes, then fl ip and grill for two to three minutes on other side.
While beef is cooking, in small saucepan reduce the remaining 1/4 cup of balsamic to glaze the beef.
Once beef is ready, plate and brush with your balsamic reduction.

Sights Sights of theof the SeasonSeason
You don't have to visit the North Pole to fi nd the true spirit of Christmas
by Melissa Smalley
W ith all the hustle and bustle that comes with the hectic
holiday season, sometimes it can be diffi cult to enjoy the
true magic of Christmas.
There's so much more to the festive season than presents and holiday
parties. Although gift giving and celebrating are enjoyable, seeing
Christmas through a child's eyes – and
remembering the sense of enchantment
brought on by Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph
and of course the big man in red himself –
can incite a certain kind of holiday spirit we
often leave behind with our childhood.
Of course, it can be tough to summon these
nostalgic feelings without a little inspiration
– luckily, the Christmas magic is closer than
you think, if you know where to look for it.
Grouse MountainA short gondola ride to the top of this
North Shore mountain takes you to a true
winter wonderland, known this time of year
as 'The Peak of Christmas.'
Starting Nov. 23, the annual holiday festivities feature dozens of family-
friendly activities, including sleigh rides, an outdoor ice-skating rink,
Santa's workshop, a gingerbread village, Christmas carolers and more.
This year the mountain is featuring a "Snowman" theme, and
guests can take photos of themselves as a snow man, create snowman
ornaments or get snowman tattoos in the Peak Chalet and enjoy
snowman-themed shows at the Theatre in the Sky.
Santa will be on hand daily in his workshop from Dec. 13 to 23, and
will be hosting a deliciously jolly breakfast
each morning from Dec. 14 to Christmas Eve.
A special family ticket rate – valid for two
adults and two children/youth up to 18 years
of age – is available for $79.95.
Call 604-980-9311 or visit www.
grousemountain.com for more info.

From traditional German Bratwurst, suckling
pig and Swiss Raclette to Christmas cookies,
Lebkuchen, roasted chestnuts, baked apples
and spiced cake, you'll defi nitely want to bring
your appetite to this outdoor market.
Beverages include the traditional German
Christmas drink known as Feuerzangenbowle,
as well as hot spiced red wine and a selection
of German beers.
Much of the merchandise available to
purchase is hand-crafted, including authentic
wood carvings, knitted clothes and scarves,
tin toys, stain glass, nutcracker fi gurines and
advent wreaths.
A special Kids' Market includes a Christmas
carousel, gingerbread mascots Holly and
Jolly, candle decorating, a scavenger hunt, and
gingerbread decorating activities.

Burnaby Village Museum For more ways to celebrate the historic
side of the holidays, visit Burnaby Village
Museum's annual Heritage Christmas event.
The village is illuminated throughout the
season with a spectacular display of lights, and
features a gigantic, multi-coloured Christmas
Tree, eco-sculptures and sound-activated light
displays. Stroll through the village streets
and enjoy the traditional sights and sounds
of Christmases past. Kids can enjoy crafts
and scavenger hunts for children, holiday
entertainment and mouth-watering baking
from the farmhouse every Sunday.
Of course, a trip to the Burnaby Village
Museum wouldn't be complete without a ride
on the vintage carousel. The restored carousel
was constructed in 1912 by Charles Wallace
Parker, known as 'America's Carnival King,'
and made its way to Vancouver in 1936. In
1989, the Burnaby Village Museum took
ownership of the carousel, and it was rebuilt
as a massive project between the provincial
government, the city of Burnaby and a
community organization called Friends of the
Carousel. Admission to the museum is free,
but carousel rides are $2.21 each. For more

Christmas in Victoria If you've got the time to indulge in a festive weekend getaway,
a visit to our province's capital will surely ignite your Christmas
spirit.
There are plenty of beautiful, historic places to stay in
Downtown Victoria's inner harbour, many of them alight for the
holidays and featuring special Christmas getaway packages.
One of the most popular holiday destinations in the Victoria
area is Butchart Gardens, which celebrates the Magic of Christmas
from Dec. 1 through Jan. 6.
The elaborately landscaped, world-renowned gardens are
adorned with thousands of twinkling Christmas lights. Carollers
serenade visitors, who can enjoy a skate around the outdoor rink,
available during admission hours, and then warm up with some
hot chocolate at the coffee shop.
In the Children's Pavilion is the Rose Carousel, featuring 30
animals hand-crafted from basswood.
For a more historic experience, visit Craigdarroch Castle, a
massive Victorian-era mansion built in the late 1800s as a family
residence for wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir.
At Christmastime, the castle is elaborately decorated and special
holiday tours take place throughout the month of December.
If you're looking for something on the spookier side, the Ghosts
of Christmas Past Walking Tour takes place on weekends in
December around Downtown Victoria and explores tales of the
supernatural and unexplained holiday legends of this historic city.
There are also plenty of horse-drawn carriage sightseeing tours
in the downtown area, and December is the best time to take
in the holiday lights around the inner harbour and at the B.C.
legislature.

W hile the holiday season may be the most wonderful
time of the year for many, it is typically the most
stressful.
There’s the added wallet-draining expenses, pressure
to buy that ‘perfect’ gift, entertaining and festive decorating – now
even more overwhelming thanks to Pinterest – to fret about it.
Rather than risk burning out and becoming a ‘Grinch’ before the
fun and festivities even begin, one may want to consider springing
for a gift of their very own. Come on, you know you deserve it.
For those who’d rather not deck the halls in a room with padded
walls, consider any one of these stress busters an investment in your
sanity this season.
Sail awayWouldn’t you just love to escape the holiday hustle and bustle –
even if it’s just for a day or two? Well, what’s stopping you? Only a
quick ferry ride away, Tigh-Na-Mara offers the perfect mini-vacay to
help you recharge your batteries.
Set in 22 acres of arbutus and fi r forest just outside Parksville,
this seaside resort offers direct access to three kilometers of sandy
Rathtrevor Beach and a unique spa concept to help you relax and
rejuvenate.
The 20,000-square-foot Grotto Spa – voted number one in
Western Canada – is home to a host of signature treatments,
including: body wraps, massages, manicures, pedicures and facials –
many with a focus on natural West Coast ingredients.
You’ll be feeling as jolly as Old Saint Nick after a dip in the
detoxifying mineral pool, which has been designed to emulate a
natural-stone grotto. Afterwards, relaxation lounges await for fi reside
tranquility and endless tapas dining at the Treetop Tapas & Grill
restaurant. For information about holiday packages, visit www.

Go walking in a winter wonderlandExercise is one of the most effective ways to kick stress to the curb
– and no, a lap around the mall isn’t going to cut it.
While you could hit the gym, perhaps it’s time to give yourself the
gift of a new fi tness experience this winter. If you can walk, you’ll
have no problem snowshoeing. Dubbed the fastest-growing outdoor
winter activity, snowshoeing is an affordable way to stay active and a
great way to soak up B.C.’s breathtaking winter landscapes.

Say OmThe weather outside may be frightful, but
doesn’t a little hot yoga sound rather delightful?
Popularized in the early '70s, Bikram Yoga is
an effective way to melt all your holiday stress
away – quite literally.
Participants bend it like Beckham in a room
that’s been heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit,
which is proven to provide deeper stretching
capabilities. In addition to stress relief, benefi ts
include: injury prevention, tension relief – it’s
also said to stimulate health to your organs,
joints and muscles.
Having trouble staying focused on your big
holiday ‘to-do’ list? Hot yoga is also known to
improve clarity and concentration. Those deep-
breathing techniques will sure come in handy
when you fi nd yourself vacuuming Christmas
tree pine needles for the umpteenth time.
Where does one fi nd hot yoga you ask?
Bikram Yoga White Rock has a stunning studio
with one of the most advanced heating systems
available. Anti-microbial fl ooring and the ocean
view will connect your sweaty body to a calm
mind. Note: newbies have the chance to try out
the class at a signifi cantly reduced rate. Visit
www.bikramyogawhiterock.com for details.
Let’s hear it for the boysWhen it comes to relaxing spa treatments,
why should girls have all the fun? Voted the
Best Men’s Salon in the Peninsula by the
Readers Choice Awards for four years in a row,
MenZone Hair Co. in South Surrey has a variety
of services that will help you beat the holiday
blues. Tis’ the season for indulgence, which can
result in unwanted acne – increased stress can
also make those pesky pimples appear.
To stay in the clear zone, give yourself the
gift of a men’s facial. After a steam, cleanse,
exfoliation, masque, facial massage and
moisturizer application, your face will be as
smooth as a baby’s bottom.
You’ll also leave feeling and looking like
a brand-new man – one who's ready for
whatever holiday hoopla is thrown in their
direction. If glowing skin doesn’t convince
you, they’ve also got two fl at-screen TVs and
Wi-Fi to enjoy during your visit. Ho, ho, ho.
You are getting very sleepyClose your eyes, listen to the sound of my
voice and leave all your worries at the door
– sound impossible? While skeptic Scrooges
many think hypnotherapy is all just humbug,
it is actually a safe and effective way to
overcome issues in your life, alleviate stress
and reach your personal goals.
Take Christmas shopping, for example. Do
you have a tough time talking yourself down
from making purchases you can’t afford?
Hypnosis can help you make profound
changes in thought patterns and may save you
from the dreaded post-holiday debt that so
many of us fi nd ourselves stuck in.

Tips for reducing Holiday stress
• Pick and choose your activities wisely. Just because you were invited to your neighbour's sister's friend's party, doesn't mean you have to attend. If you spread your social calendar too thin this time of year, you won't have time for the essentials.
• Start planning for things as early as possible. Especially when it comes to shopping – whether for gifts or for party hosting supplies – the more you can get out of the way early, the better.
• Don't be afraid to ask for help. Get your signifi cant other to take on a task or two, or have a friend or relative take the kids for an afternoon. A little help can go a long way.
• Do something each day that's just for you. A relaxing bubble bath, an hour on the couch with a book – it won't make or break your holiday schedule but it will certainly help your sanity.

A friend of mine
hosts a New
Year’s Day
brunch and, because
he loves opera, my
host gift usually is an
appropriate compact
disc. This year, I
might take him a
wine that matches
his appreciation of
Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro: a very nice
white wine from
Naramata’s Terravista
Vineyards, called
Figaro.
This is a strategy I
recommend for wine
gifting when you don’t
know what kind of
wine the recipient likes;
or when you get so lost
in the wine store that you don’t know what
to buy. Forget about matching the wine to the
recipient’s palate. Match it to his or her hobby
or career interests.
The hockey fan, as an example, would
appreciate the Wayne Gretzky Okanagan wines
which were released this spring. They are widely
available at prices (around $16-$18) that won’t
break your budget nor make you look cheap.
Bartier Bros.’ The Goal 2011, a Merlot blend, is a
little pricier but also a step up in refi nement.
For birders and
nature lovers, the
choices from British
Columbia wineries
include Burrowing
Owl, Calliope, Quails’
Gate, Robin Ridge,
Stellers Jay and Wild
Goose. The excellent
wines from these
producers are widely
available.
Music lovers who
may not be opera
fans should enjoy Piano and Chorus, two
wines from Stoneboat Vineyards; or wines
from Kaleden’s Kraze Legz Vineyard called The
Cakewalk, The Charleston or The Lindy Hop,
all dances popular in the 1920s.
Medical friends will chuckle at a sparkling
wine from Therapy Vineyards called Fizzio
Therapy or a New Zealand Riesling called The
Doctors.
Your banker might like a bottle from
Liquidity Wines, and your clergyman would
chuckle at something
from Church & State,
Heaven’s Gate or
Hidden Chapel Winery,
or the Sauvignon Blanc
from New Zealand’s
Sacred Hill Winery.
Many wine labels are
tame compared with
what you can fi nd in
the Australian section.
Imagine the friends
you could match up
with Angus The Bull,
Menzies The Cigar,
Killibinbin Scaredy
Cat, Favourite Son or
Vinaceous Raconteur.
Not edgy enough?
How about R Wines
Bitch, an $18 Grenache
listed in more than 60
provincial liquor stores.
For your hunting friends, how about Ladies
Who Shoot Their Lunch, a $40 Shiraz from
Australia, or Saxenburg Guinea Fowl, a $19 red
blend from South Africa.
The choices for pet lovers range from Chile’s
Gato Negro wines (black cat) to any of the fi ve
wines from the Okanagan’s See Ya Later Ranch
that are named for dogs actually buried at the
winery: Ping, Nellie, Hunny, Jimmy My Pal
and Rover. The back label usually explains the
stories of these pets.
For agriculturists, I recommend Goats do
Roam Red, a remarkable $16 wine from South
Africa’s Fairview Winery, listed in about 100
liquor stores. The label, of course, is a pun
on Côtes du Rhône. I fi rst bought the wine a
decade ago at a grocery store in London simply
on the label. Unlike some other animal label
wines, this one really overdelivers, which makes
it a good gift even if the friend is not into
farming.
