1 Newsletter No. 28 - Term 3Week 9 Thursday 10 September2015 From the Principal……… INDIA TRIP TO JIRS 2015 Seven children and three staff have just returned from our sister school in India, after a very successful visit. Our JIRS sister school accommodated us extremely well and did so much to make us feel very comfortable in the school. Our students had a wonderful time making new friends and learning about India and the schools in India. Over the next few weeks they will be writing about India in the newsletter. Whilst at JIRS, our students and their buddies went out on lots of excursions so they were able to experience rural Indian life, and the roads! We also went into Bangalore to view the City, its temples, public buildings, museum, aquarium and a bit of shopping. We experienced the Palace at Mysore and the beautiful garden surrounds. We went to a fantastic pyramid-shaped meditation centre, where the children experienced sitting, thinking, and listening to the sounds of nature. While at JIRS we participated in two wonderful celebratory festivals and the students dressed up in Indian costumes, looking very beautiful indeed. At the second festival, our children performed a traditional Indian dance on stage and got a rousing ovation for all of their efforts. How easily our children fitted into the school life at JIRS! Children all around the world want to learn and play, and just be children. They laugh together, play games, sports, and danced all together joyously. We are very lucky to have been paired with JIRS and we were paired together because of our shared values. Every time we spoke with teachers they demonstrated the same care and love for the children as our teachers do here. The children at JIRS were polite, friendly, helpful and courteous at all times. It is a wonderful experience to have a sister school where we can be confident of our mutual understandings and our view for the future. Both JIRS and Kalinda are both very keen to foster this relationship way into the future. We were overwhelmed by kindness and I have formally invited JIRS to have a return visit to Kalinda. We learnt so much, we experienced wonderful sights, sounds, tastes and both the children, the teachers and I want to share that with the Kalinda community over the next weeks and months. Look out for more news of India in coming weeks. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

VISITORS FROM SINGAPORE Kalinda welcomed 10 school leaders from Singapore today, who came to see our school in action. These visitors were from 10 different secondary schools across Singapore, and came to Australia as part of a course they are completing on Curriculum Management. Kalinda is one of three schools they came to Australia to visit, and the only primary school. They were interested in finding out more about how we managed the implementation of the Australian curriculum, our unique teaching and learning program here at Kalinda, and also our Challenge Based Learning Program, which is very different to anything they have in their schools in Singapore. Japanese Day

Come to see us in costume at the assembly

on Monday, 14th September On Monday, 14th September, we are going to have our Japanese day.

All parents and friends are most welcome to join us at the assembly at 9:10 a.m. in our stadium and also 2:00 P.m. for professional energetic Japanese drum and shamisen performance, followed by our students singing and dancing performance.

This is a whole school event. This year, the whole school is NOT divided into Aka (red) and Shiro (white) teams. Instead, we encourage you to dress up as one of Japanese anime characters, one of Japanese food or anything you could relate to Japan! At the opening assembly in the morning, we will have the costume parade, everyone will have turn to show off your costume!! There will be prizes for each level. So please start thinking about your costume!! You might create something using a garbage bag, cardboard and face painting?? Parents and friends are most welcome to join our assembly.

We hope you enjoy co-ordinating the clothes and be ready for the fun day!!

There are many activities and a special performance planned as below!!

The details are coming in the next newsletter. Arigato!

STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN PROGRAM Such a feast! We enjoyed cooking and tasting this week. From our garden we harvested silver beet, kale, celery, chives, lettuce and parsley. We chopped, squeezed, stirred, tasted and as all good chefs do, cleaned as we cooked. We thoroughly enjoyed tasting our silver beet potato curry puffs accompanied by carrot and celery salad. From the Literacy Department I have been wonderfully amused and absolutely wowed by the literary talent exhibited by our Kalinda students over the last couple of weeks, whilst I have been reading the various entries for the Write4Fun competition, now the competition has closed, I am missing being so entertained! But on Tuesday… Mr Lambert a suggested a fabulous solution: a whole school novel writing challenge. At this Monday’s assembly we launched Kalinda’s first ever, whole school novel writing challenge. As a school community we will be writing two novels, one for the junior school: Foundation – Grade 2 and one for the senior school: grade 3 – 6. The novels will be written completely by our students. Each fortnight children will be encouraged to write the next chapter, and each fortnight one junior and senior school entry will be chosen and receive ‘The Next Chapter Award’ for the junior and senior novels. So, where do good story ideas come from? EVERYWHERE! Writers find ideas for characters and stories from everyday life. Perhaps your sister creates an epic mess in the kitchen. Story idea. Perhaps you see two people laughing hysterically while you are walking at the park. Story idea. Perhaps you see a tiny ant … Or, you might like to use one to the following pictures as a prompt for our first chapter…

The first chapters are due by Friday 16th October (the second Friday back after the holidays) and the winning chapters will be announced Monday, 19th October.

Happy Writing!!! Erin Norman Literacy Coordinator

FOUNDATION CAKE STALL

On Tuesday, the Foundation students held a Cake Stall to raise money for Edgar’s Mission, a not-for-profit organisation that looks after rescued farm animals. We had so many yummy treats for sale, all kindly made and donated by our wonderful Foundation families. That afternoon you had to be quick to get a cake or a slice as so many people came to support our fundraiser! It was very, very busy! A huge thanks to all the bakers and the parents that helped run the stall. We raised an amazing $502.10 on the afternoon! What a great result. Yesterday afternoon the Foundation students voted to choose an animal buddy to adopt for each grade. This will provide the animal with vet care and food for 12 months. The remainder of the cake stall money, along with the mountain of Weetbix we have collected, will be donated in October when Edgar’s Mission comes to visit us at Kalinda! Foundation D chose to adopt 'Helen and Bea', two gorgeous lambs. Foundation M chose to adopt 'Leon Trotsky', a very cute piglet. Foundation T chose to adopt ‘Lemonade’, another lovely little lamb. P & F Meeting

Our next P & F meeting will be held in the school stadium

next Monday 14th September straight after assembly.

The lovely Nicole will also open Kalinda Kafe, so come along,

have a cuppa and something to eat and catch up.

Everyone is welcome to attend!

We hope to see you there

From the sports desk…

DISTRICT ATHLETICS TEAM AND INFORMATION: Well done to the (nearly) 90 Level 3 and Level 4

students who represented themselves and their school extremely well at the Ringwood North District

Athletics carnival held on Tuesday September 1. CONGRATULATIONS to those students who focussed their

efforts towards Personal Best results – regardless of their final ‘place’. Some students have performed at an

extremely high level, earning an invitation to the next level of competition; the Maroondah / Manningham DIVISION

carnival (which will be held at the same venue on Thursday, October 8). Thanks to Mr. McLean for managing

Kalinda’s participation in this year’s event (in my absence) and for publishing those student details in prior

newsletters. I will be in contact with those students and their families in the next week or so.

A huge thanks also to Mrs. Renehan, Ms. D’Amico and Mr. Kenna as well as to the parents who supported (or

offered support to) the processes of the day, as well as to those parents who came along to watch their child/ren

compete.

HOOP-TIME ROUND-ROBIN DAYS: Kalinda Primary School’s involvement in the entry-level Round Robin

competitions of Hoop-time basketball has now come to an end for 2015.

I would like to acknowledge the HUGE amount of teacher and parent support that I received over

the course of the two events. Particular thanks to those parents who followed every move of

particular teams – either coaching or scoring for each match. But thanks also to the spectators

who came along and pitched-in – the support looked and sounded great

If any students or families would – as a result of their 2015 Hoop-time involvement – now like

further information about how to get started in one of Australia’s most highly participated junior sports, Kalinda P.S.

enjoys mutually beneficial relationships with a variety of local, reputable basketball clubs that I would be happy to

discuss.

HOOP-TIME REGION FINALS: I have now received an invitation for Kalinda Primary School’s Grade 6 All-Star

boys team to participate in a Regional Finals competition. This will be held on Wednesday 21st October at ‘The

Rings’ (a.k.a.: Maroondah Stadium). This event also follows a round-robin format, and runs from around 9:45am

until around 2:45pm. Further information will be made available to participating students, shortly.

SPORTING SCHOOLS: All Sporting Schools programs have now finished for Term 3. Please ‘watch

this space’ for further FREE sports programs and opportunities to be conducted throughout Term 4.

We Want You! We Want You! We Want You As A New Recruit!!

No, it’s not the YMCA, but it’s just as exciting, (well, almost!)

Wanting to volunteer, but only have 15 minutes or so to spare? Then

we’ve got the job for you! It’s exciting, it’s worthwhile, but best of all, it’s super easy!!! Our school sign is known far and wide. We’ve even been featured in a builder’s newsletter! Lots of passers-by have called the school to comment on our sign. So…to keep it interesting and up to date, we need volunteers on MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS. The sign’s messages are prepared for you. It takes approximately 15 minutes to wind down the sign, change the letters and wind it back up again. This could be done at any time during the two allocated days. If we get lots of volunteers, you may only need to change the sign a few times a year. How easy is that? Please leave your name, email address, contact number and preferred day on the slip below and return to your class teacher or directly to the office so a roster can be created. Looking forward to a wonderful response! Lyse Carlson

Teaching your child health eating habits part 3 Labelling foods as good and bad If you have been on a lot of diets in your life you may have a tendency to call yourself “bad” if you are eating less healthy food or say “I’m being good” if you are trying to eat well or avoid the less healthy foods. By calling healthy foods good and unhealthy foods bad and labelling yourself as good or bad depending on the food you are eating you are sending messages to your kids that food has power over you. Because no one can “be good” all the time, the next thing that happens is your child see’s you breaking out and eating “bad” food when you are trying to be “good” and starts to normalise the battle that a lot of people have around food. Food is just an object and does not have power innately, it’s just food until you start thinking of it as good or bad, then it starts to develop power. The more helpful way to refer to food is “sometimes” and “everyday” food and to start to realise that it’s not possible or necessary to avoid sometimes foods- they aren’t bad, they are just not as healthy as other foods, so you have them sometimes.
