LONDON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY NEWSLETTER JULY 2017 As the principles of Developing People, Improving Care outlines, our work at the London Leadership Academy is underpinned by our belief in compassionate, values- driven, and inclusive leadership. These ideas can sometimes be a bit ‘buzz-wordy’, but their importance cannot be understated. In pressured environments, it can be easier to resort to command-and-control style leadership, where decisions are made at the top and actions are implemented with no questions asked. But at a time of poor retention rates and critical staff survey results, leading inclusively could make or break the well-being of our workforce. ‘Inclusion’ is about creating workplaces where staff feel valued and that their voice is heard. I am currently undertaking a piece of research with Cranfield Business School, interviewing senior leaders across the NHS to understand more about what inclusion really looks and feels like, and what leadership behaviours and traits they have drawn on to create an inclusive working environment. So far my research highlights a couple of things. Firstly, there is so much fantastic work that goes on everyday in the NHS. In times of crisis, the emergency services do amazing work responding with courage and professionalism - but the small, unnoticed things that staff also achieve on a day-to-day basis should be recognised and applauded. Secondly, leading inclusively is a journey - and it’s one that we can all progress in, no matter who we are. This week, I went to speak at the Westminster Briefings conference on Staff Networks for Diversity and Inclusion. There, I spoke about the LLA’s approach to working across boundaries - from our L&OD Network to our new Women’s Leadership Network - and how collaboration and inclusion can only come from a place of trust. If leaders can build trust first, the rest will follow. Elsewhere at the Leadership Academy, we are delighted to open applications for our Ready Now programme for senior BAME leaders and in London, our Capital People digital community is really starting to thrive. We have supported several Inclusion Communities of Practice to emerge - modelling our ethos of collective working through this approach. This month, I also presented our new Inclusion Labs approach to the HRD Network and we look forward to working closely with pilot trusts around the WRES indicators over the coming months. If you would like to work with the LLA to embed a culture of inclusion across the NHS, then please join our Capital People community and the London Women’s Leadership Network where we have some fantastic interventions for you to get involved in. NEWSLETTER JULY 2017

As the principles of Developing People, Improving Care outlines, our work at the London Leadership Academy is underpinned by our belief in compassionate, values-driven, and inclusive leadership.

In times of crisis, the emergency services do amazing work responding with

courage and professionalism - but the small, unnoticed things that staff also achieve on a day-to-day basis should be recognised and applauded.

This month, I also presented our new Inclusion Labs approach to the HRD Network and we look forward to working closely with pilot trusts around the

WRES indicators over the coming months.

If you would like to work with the LLA to embed a culture of inclusion across the NHS, then please join our Capital People community and the London Women’s Leadership Network where we have some fantastic interventions for you to get involved in.

2016-17 Annual Report LaunchedWe are pleased to launch our Annual Report for the 2016-17 financial year. This report highlights the work we are doing in developing leaders across the system. In this document, we reflect on our key successes look forward to what the future holds for the LLA. You can download the report here.

London Leadership Academy continues to be passionate about the work that we do as we know it makes a real difference to leaders who are on the frontline delivering outstanding care in extremely pressured environments. We are by the NHS, for the NHS, and act as an honest broker for partner organisations to commission at scale with our trusted Faculty or experienced OD Associates. Over the past year, we have delivered over 100 leadership programmes to over 1700 staff working across London. These programmes have focused on developing systems leadership, inclusion, talent management and organisation development. We have also continued to deliver the Core Programmes with the NHS Leadership Academy and support the Graduate Management Training Scheme for London. In partnership with Health Education England, we oversaw the delivery of an eighth cohort of the Darzi Fellowships in Clinical Leadership and have matched over 300 coaching and mentoring relationships across the capital.

Thank you to our amazing LLA team who continue to strive to deliver high quality, impactful programmes. We look forward to working with you all and continuing to support healthcare leaders over the coming years.

Diverse Voices Working Collaboratively A Real Life Example of a Community of Practice (CoP) “We talk about patient centred care,” explained Varsha Dodhia, “but what does that mean to someone who is frail, or who is having a crisis?”

This is a critical issue for Varsha, who is one of fifteen Care Co-ordinators currently beginning to explore their work in North West London. The newness of these roles – and the challenge of the work itself, which seeks to connect the health and social care system better in order to improve access to services for patients, their carers, their friends and their relatives – led Varsha to want to create a Community of Practice, following last year’s London Leadership Academy meeting on this topic.Varsha has a well-developed sense of systems, in fact, she previously worked for DHL, the parcel delivery company. One might think there is little comparison between patient care and getting packages to people on time, but Varsha’s view is simple: “You can track a parcel around the world – but often we struggle to track a patient as they move through the health and care system with multiple handovers. The patient experiences a disjointed system.”

For her, in light of this systems challenge, a CoP makes sense: the work itself is implicitly linked to the practice of their day jobs; it creates a space in which people can learn from one another and introduce change off the back of that understanding; and it is all about supporting collective effort in its widest possible sense. It is for these reasons that, while a CoP takes a little longer to achieve meaningful transformation, it will have grown out of the

lived experience of those involved in the work – and hence is likely to stick better and to be more sustainable.

Varsha has had the support of the LLA and of Professor David Sines at New Bucks University. The initial meeting of the CoP on care co-ordination attracted 35 interested people. Off the back of that discussion, Varsha is using a Knowledge Hub to connect people in order that the conversation about the work can progress.

At the LLA, we are continuing to support and encourage the creation of Communities of Practice across all our priority areas - systems, inclusion, talent management - through offering coaching, advice and support. We will be setting up a meeting for all our current and prospective convenors in September, getting together under the guidance of Chris Collison who has a strong track record in helping organisations get the most out of them. If you have any questions about this September event, please contact [email protected].

Varsha suggested the best possible explanation of what CoPs offer. She observes that, in a CoP, “…everyone has a say. A diversity of voices addresses diverse and difficult issues and collectively works to understand them – and to solve them.” Explained in this way, on the basis of Varsha’s experience, it is possible to see a rich model of change that is truly inclusive, actively engaging, and based in practice. And, in light of this, it is a model that offers the best chance for true transformation – and one which the LLA is actively seeking to promote

Ready Now Programme Applications open for Senior BAME Leaders

The NHS Leadership Academy (the Academy) opened recruitment for intake six of the Ready

Now programme on 3rd July 2017. Intake six will offer three cohorts starting from April 2018.

There are up to 35 places available per cohort.

Ready Now is an innovative and inspirational positive action programme from the NHS

Leadership Academy. The year-long programme will take senior leaders from a BAME

background on a transformational learning journey, helping them to realise their potential and

take that next step up to a more senior role, to the boardroom and beyond.

The programme begins with the assumption that BAME staff face complex and unique challenges to their progression. These

challenges are due to multiple day to day obstacles that are embedded within all aspects of the system. BAME staff have a

particular and powerful role to pay in changing this.

Ready Now gives participants the space to deeply consider how they lead. They engage with experimenting with and testing

new strategies for enhancing their leadership impact. The work involved here is key to enabling voice, choice and growing

the confidence and capabilities to powerfully lead for inclusion, for the benefit of patients and staff.

Designed to respect and build upon the skills, experience and wisdom participants already have, Ready Now aims to nurture

curiosity, expand horizons and help participants consolidate their practice with even more authority. It is a means to further

develop their leadership skills, styles and behaviours; providing an opportunity to connect with contemporaries across the

health care system more broadly.

Successful applicants will already have leadership experience as the programme is designed for leaders from under-represented

groups that want to become senior leaders in the health or social care system. The programme will positively reinforce your

view that the NHS should be more inclusive of the communities it serves.

To complete an application, visit the Academy’s website.

Applications close on Monday 9th October.

Self as Instrument - for experienced NHS OD practitioners/change agentsOrganisational Development

This workshop aims to give experienced Organisation Development Practitioners and change agents working in the NHS the opportunity to explore how they utilise themselves as an ‘instrument for change and improvement’.

Participants will have a chance to explore the idea of ‘self as instrument’ and its relationship to the practice of Organisation Development. Key questions around the process of personal development will be explored, and a myriad of tools and models will be utilised to consider how we can focus on strengthening our instrumentality. Participants will be encouraged to devise their own personal development plan, which focuses on their 12-month goal, as part of their CPD activities to become a more potent practitioner.

The day will involve a small amount of pre-workshop reflection and thinking, and during the workshop participants will work alone, in small groups and work with the large group.

Date: Mon 11th September 2017Time: 09:30 – 16:30Location: Central London TBA

Compassion as a Bridge to EngagementLeading in a System’s Age

Creating more systems leadership is a priority for NHS Improvement and it is one of four objectives that underpin the new national leadership framework. Compassionate leadership sits at the heart of working collectively across systems, as it provides the foundation for greater self-compassion; expanded perspective taking; and increased creativity.

This programme will offer participants the opportunity to both establish more mindful ways of leading, and consider areas in the system where opportunities lie for them as individual leaders. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit a range of healthcare users including refugees, addicts and prisoners. This key aspect of the programme is undertaken with the view to introduce tangibility, and inspire thoughts on where the opportunities lie to co-design a more compassionate, inclusive NHS.

We are delighted to announce cohort two of this programme, which will run on the following dates:

Module 1: 27th & 28th Sept 2017Action Learning Set 1: 1st NovModule 2: 5th DecALS 2: 10th Jan 2018

We are actively seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to join the course; please email [email protected] to obtain an application form.

Systems Leadership Laboratory Leading in a Systems Age

The LLA would like to invite you ‘Systems Leadership Laboratory™’, a full day, interactive and dynamic event developed, designed and delivered Impact4 and led by Dr Jeanne Hardacre and Diane Davis.

The Systems Leadership Lab™ enables you to really explore how productive partnership and systems working can be developed and sustained within your own context. It is a dynamic, high impact, experiential learning event, in which we create a ‘live’ organisational system in the room.

Significantly adapted and tailored to the current health and social care context, the Lab incorporates work by Barry Oshry and other leading thinkers and researchers in organisational cultures, innovation and collaborative leadership.

Participants will immerse themselves in working together in a ‘live’ organisational system in the room, with typical power differentials, diverse agendas, strongly held identities and familiar organisational cultures. All participants will take part in a series of learning activities, and we press the ‘pause’ button at frequent intervals to uncover why systems leadership is often so tricky.

We then work together to build a shared understanding of leading across systems and what it takes to empower a system beyond organisational boundaries.

The first part of the morning is devoted to the immersive developmental experience, and the rest of the day focuses on applying this learning directly to leadership work in participants’ own organisational and system contexts.

For more information about Impact4, and what the Systems Leadership can do for OD Leads, please visit our eventbrite page, where you can also book your place on the programme.

Fit for Futures WebinarLeading in a Systems Age

The LLA is delighted to offer health and social care leaders across the capital access to this webinar which will be run for us by Eitan Reich from Fit For Futures later this month.

Eitan, who works in the area of managing in complex adaptive systems, has developed a framework that supports leaders to find their way through specific challenges and define suitable responses in those particular contexts.

Building on the work that we have been doing on leadership in the face of wicked problems and in the context of complexity, we are delighted to collaborate with Eltan on this in the form of a small pilot of 20 participants, drawn from attendees at an event run for us last year by Dave Snowden, and earlier this year at our Systems Leadership Summit.

The aim of this pilot is to make the ‘Fit For Future’ decision making tool, which is based on future scenarios planning, adapted to the needs of managers and staff at the NHS. We are also pleased to be able to open up these webinars beyond the pilot group to anyone with an interest in the topic.

The webinar will run twice in the month of July, in order to maximise attendance – and we invite you to join us for these initial conversations which are set to launch the pilot.

Date: Fri 28th July 2017Time: 09:00 – 10:00
