Coming up at Wakehurst Welcome
Welcome to Wakehurst’s Wild Wood weekend
Wakehurst’s woodlands are some of our most magical spaces. Pearcelands woods, our coppice woodland, supported a myriad of traditional industries across the country up until the Industrial Revolution. These included: charcoal making for the Sussex iron-smelting industry, pole lathe turning for the chair industry, treenware, hurdles, shingles for roofs, and besom brooms.
Pearcelands Wood is a typical Sussex hazel coppice coup. It is traditionally managed on a seven year cut cycle which produces a yearly crop of hazel rods. This management also supports a rich biodiversity including vibrant ground flora, many different tree species, butterflies, and mammals including hazel dormouse and badgers.
As you journey through the enchanting heart of Bethlehem Wood, gaze at our unique collection of birch trees.
You’ll know you’ve reached Coates Wood when eucalyptus trees and Wollemi pines emerge from the landscape, leading you up to Tree Trunk Trek.
Adventurers will be drawn to the magic of Pearcelands Wood. Here you’ll find guardians of the woodlands celebrating the traditions of our ancient forests.
