LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This weekend I begin a two-part bulletin letter on the place of music in Catholic worship to set in context a wonderful gift our Basilica Church has recently received – a new state of the art digital Rodgers Classic organ that will be installed in August.

As a young boy I was fortunate to be in a parish church that had a wonderful music minister who exposed my young and inquisitive mind to the richness of music within our wonderful Catholic Heritage. Her father had been a renown Church musician at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood and she continued the tradition of fine church music in our newly established, post World War II, suburban Church in the San Fernando Valley. As a young boy I was exposed to the richness of our choral and polyphonic musical tradition as well as the moving simplicity of Gregorian chant. We were fortunate to have a skilled organist who played beautiful preludes and postludes from the great organ literature be-fore and after the solemn liturgy on Sunday. Though the organ was ‘modest’ in the first temporary church that was built, when the permanent Church was completed, a fine pipe organ was installed that supported the excellent musical tradition that had developed in the parish. Exposure to this rich heritage planted a seed that continued to grow as I matured and eventually decided to enter the seminary to pursue a priestly vocation.

The full beauty of our Catholic musical heritage came alive once I entered St. John’s Seminary in Camaril-lo. There was a very fine pipe organ in both the new College Chapel as well as an older instrument in the Chapel of the graduate school of Theology. We were blessed in those days to have a number of very tal-ented and skilled organists and musicians. I sang in a small choral group called, The Renaissance Group, and it was here that I learned ‘informally’ much of the musical skills that I have to this day. In time, I was ap-pointed music director in the College Seminary in my senior year and was responsible for coordinating all aspects of planning for liturgical music throughout that academic year.

These were the heady years following the close of the Second Vatican Council. The Council in her Consti-tution on the Sacred Liturgy gave a renewed emphasis on the importance of the place of music in Catholic Worship. There was a desire in the council documents to underscore the value of congregational singing together with retaining and valuing the venerable choral tradition of our Church. While contemporary instruments were being introduced in music in Catholic worship with the development at the parish level of the contemporary ‘guitar mass,’ this was always to be seen as a complement and in continuity with the rich, classical choral and chant tradition that had developed over the centuries in our Church.

On becoming Rector at Holy Family Cathedral in 1988, a top priority as pastor was insuring that the rich-ness of our Catholic musical heritage was celebrated at the Cathedral. Various choral groups and ensem-bles were developed celebrating both the traditional and contemporary musical heritage of our Church.

Next week, we will reflect on music ministry here at the Basilica and the important gift we have recently received that will enhance our music ministry program.

Declaración de la Parroquia de la Misión

MENASJE DE LA SEMANA: La Comunidad Cristiana continúa caminando en su in-

tento de seguir tras las huellas de Jesús, porque sabe que Él es el mejor de los caminos para descubrir y disfrutar de los do-nes de Dios, que se nos ofrecen por su medio.

En este domingo, la liturgia y la Palabra de Dios, nos ofrecen un mensaje lleno de esperanza: nuestro Dios es el Dios de la Vida: ama la vida, la quiere para todas y cada una de las personas y la va a defender por encima de cualquier cir-cunstancia. ¡Bello mensaje y, además, consolador! Si la muerte es un hecho y un drama, el hombre está llamado a la vida: éste fue el proyecto de Dios y éste es también su objetivo final. De hecho, Jesús aparece en el Evangelio como aquél que supera la muerte, venciéndola. Todas sus palabras, gestos y signos, quieren mostrarnos que éste es el proyecto de Dios, un proyecto al que por nada quiere renunciar. La celebración de este domingo debe llevarnos, a quienes creemos en Jesús Resucitado, a lu-char contra toda forma de muerte, y a crear y comunicar vida. Quien arriesga y da su vida por amor, hace posible la esperanza y la vida de los otros, como Jesús mismo.¡Dichoso quien entrega su vida por los de-más, porque la poseerá en plenitud y para siempre!

CARTA DEL PASTOR

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Este fin de semana les daré la primera parte de una carta que dedico a la música en el liturgia Católica para poner en contexto un maravilloso regalo que la Basílica recibió recientemente – lo último del arte digital, un órgano Clásico Rodgers que será instalado el mes de Agosto.

Cuando jovencito, fui afortunado de pertenecer a una Parroquia que tenía un excelente ministro de mú-sica quien expuso ante mi joven y curiosa mente la riqueza de la música dentro de nuestra maravillosa herencia Católica. Su padre había sido un reconocido músico de la Iglesia Blessed Sacrament en Holly-wood y ella continuó la tradición de la música en nuestra nueva y recién establecida Iglesia, después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en las afueras del Valle de San Fernando. De jovencito también tuve la dicha de disfrutar la riqueza de nuestra tradicional música coral y polifónica, además de la candidez emotiva del Canto Gregoriano. Tuvimos la dicha de contar con una gran organista que tocaba bellos preludios y postludios de la basta literatura de órgano antes y después de la solemne liturgia del Domingo. El órgano en la Iglesia provisional era ‘modesto’, sin embargo cuando la Iglesia permanente fue terminada, un ór-gano tubular fue instalado el cual mantuvo la excelente tradición musical que ya había sido desarrollada en la parroquia. El estar expuesto a este rico patrimonio sembró en mi persona una semilla que conti-nuó creciendo mientras maduraba hasta que eventualmente decidí ingresar al seminario para seguir mi vocación sacerdotal.

La belleza completa de nuestra herencia musical Católica vino a tomar vida una vez que ingreso al Semi-nario de Saint John en Camarillo. Allí había un fino órgano tubular en la Capilla del Colegio y un antiguo instrumento en la Capilla de la escuela de Teología. Estuvimos muy bendecidos durante esa época por un gran número de talentosos organistas y músicos. Yo canté en un pequeño coro llamado, El Grupo Renacimiento, y fue allí donde aprendí ‘informalmente’, mucho de mis destrezas musicales con las que cuento hasta hoy día. Con el tiempo, fui nombrado director musical del Colegio del Seminario en mi úl-timo año escolar y fui responsable de coordinar todos los aspectos de planificación para la música litúrgi-ca durante el año académico.

Estos fueron los años emocionantes que siguieron la clausura del Concilio Vaticano Segundo. El Concilio en su Constitución de la Sagrada Liturgia dio un énfasis renovado a la importancia del lugar de la música en el culto Católico. Hubo un deseo en los documentos del concilio de subrayar el valor del canto de la comunidad, cantando junto a la venerable tradición coral de nuestra Iglesia. Aunque los instrumentos contemporáneos se fueron introducidos a la música en la Liturgia Católica con el desarrollo a nivel pa-rroquial de la ‘guitarra’ contemporánea durante la misa, esto fue siempre visto como un halago y una continuidad de la rica tradición del coro de música clásica y cantos que se había desarrollado durante los siglos en nuestra Iglesia.

Al ser rector de la Catedral de la Sagrada Familia en 1988, una de las prioridades como pastor fue asegu-rar que la riqueza de la herencia musical de nuestra Iglesia Católica fuera celebrada en la Catedral. Va-rios coros y grupos musicales fueron desarrollándose, celebrando tanto la herencia música tradicional y contemporánea de nuestra Iglesia.

La próxima semana, estaremos reflexionando sobre el ministerio de la música aquí en la Basílica y el im-portante regalo que hemos recibido recientemente, el cual dará realce a nuestro ministerio de música.

Comenzando nuestra semana en Cristo, recordemos a todos aquellos quienes nos han precedido en la fe, especialmente Tom Rodriguez. Que descansen en paz.
