IV Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Over the centuries the place where the Christian people gather for worship has traditionally been enriched by visual artwork to inspire and underscore how special the “house of the church” is for the faithful. Whether that is decorative architectural elements or images of the Lord, His Blessed Mother or the Saints, our Catholic Churches have become a visual feast that touches our minds and hearts with a living reminder of that great “cloud of witnesses” who surround us in the communion of Saints. In the building and adornment of our Basilica Church, great care has been taken over the years to incorporate sacred imagery that is both reflective of the Mission Colonial period as well as incorporating other artistic elements from other historical periods. The original wall paintings that were done at the time of the completion of the Basilica reflected the typical adornment that one would see in the early California Mission Churches. Statuary and historic paintings from our Mission collection have additionally enhanced the interior of the Basilica. With the completion of the great Retablo in 2007, visual continuity with the Serra Chapel and the Great Stone Church was achieved by adding this monumental altar piece that beautifully completes our sanctuary area. In conjunction with the installation of the new Retablo we were able to enhance our Blessed Sacrament Chapel. A new tabernacle and marble pedestal was added to the chapel together with a beautiful decora-tive iron work to create a more intimate place for prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I am pleased to announce that we will soon be adding a beautiful new commissioned painting in the Sacrament Chapel. The image is inspired from the 24th chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel and it is entitled, “Were not our hearts Burning.” It is a magnificent portrayal of the Lord breaking bread with the two disciples in Emmaus. The scriptures tell us that “in the breaking of bread” they came to know that it was the Risen Jesus who was indeed in their midst. Through the generous benefaction of several friends of the Basilica, we commissioned David Imlay, a San Francisco artist, who attended our own Mission Basilica School and whose parents, Mike and Kathy remain as active members, to visually capture this beautiful image. The painting has arrived and we are preparing the wall and lighting in the chapel to receive the image in the very near future. Beginning our new week in Christ let us commend to the love and mercy of the Lord, all those who have recently gone before us in faith. May they be at peace. Always forward, Msgr. Art

We invite you to make God

a priority in your Family!!! Three Year Olds through

8th

Grade

Religious education is important for children because that is where they first make connections between the Catholic faith and their identity as people called to our faith. It is where they first begin to understand what it means to belong to a community of believers. The Catholic Church believes that parents are the primary religious educators of their children and that the role of the parish is to assist them. Therefore, you are invited to enroll your child/children into one of our wonderful Mission Ba-silica programs for this school year. We are accepting registrations right now. The office is open from Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 5 PM. You need to bring the certificate of baptism and $25 deposit. Classes begin the second week of September. Religious Education classes are held on

Sunday from 10:30 AM- 12 noon for grades Pre-K-8th or Monday from 5:30 - 7:00 PM for grades K-8. EDGE Program: Saturday from 6:00 – 8:00PM for grades 6th – 8th.

The Religious Education Program needs YOU!

The heart of our program is the dedication of our catechists and their willingness to share their faith with our children. For our program to function, we need catechists and volunteers each week! We are very grateful to the wonderful catechists and volunteers who have already signed up for the fall! There are catechist opportunities for pre-K grade through eight grade classes. Training is provided for this ministry, which is open to any Catholic who has been confirmed, is actively practicing his or her faith, and is in good standing with the Church. I invite you to open your heart to God’s Will and prayerfully consider joining us in this very important teaching ministry. If you are interested in becoming a Catechist or an assis-tant, please call the Religious Education office at (949) 234-1370 or email Juanita Villalobos at

[email protected] for further information.

Mission Basilica School teachers and staff have been hard at work this summer preparing for the new school year. Recently, twenty-five MBS employees earned their CPR and First Aid certification from American Heart Association in-structor, Sandy Griffin, R.N. They were also trained on the use of epi-nephrine pens and automated exter-nal defibrillators to insure the safety of their students. Other seminars attended this summer by staff mem-bers included topics on differentiat-

ed instruction, development observation tools and the latest educational technology. On August 19th MBS will host local Diocesan schools for a faculty and staff professional development seminar. Well-known author Robin Fogarty will share engaging strategies on how to incorporate the Common Core elements into the classroom. Summer will culminate on August 23rd for the MBS staff when they attend the Diocesan Convoca-tion at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

estamos llamados a movernos “siempre adelante”.

¿Qué significan esas palabras de Jesús: “No he venido a traer al mun-do paz, sino división”?

Tema: “No he venido a traer al mundo paz, sino división”.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Jue 2:11-19; Sal 106 (105):34-37, 39-40, 43ab, 44; Mt 19:16-22 Martes: Jue 6:11-24a; Sal 85 (84):9, 11-14; Mt 19:23-30 Miércoles: Jue 9:6-15; Sal 21 (20):2-7; Mt 20:1-16 Jueves: Jue 11:29-39a; Sal 40 (39):5, 7-10; Mt 22:1-14 Viernes: Rut 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Sal 146 (145):5-10; Mt 22:34-40 Sábado: Ap 21:9b-14; Sal 145 (144):10-13, 17-18; Jn 1:45-51 Domingo: Is 66:18-21; Sal 117 (116):1-2; Heb 12:5-7, 11-13; Lc 13:22-30 Domingo: Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Sal 40 (39):2-4, 18; Heb 12:1-4; Lc 12:49-53

X Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano

Siempre adelante, Mons. Art
