Night-Time Adorers Needed/First Mondays Only Join more than 100 fellow parishioners who have signed up for a Holy Hour with Our Lord during the parish’s First Monday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, once a month. The night hours of Midnight –5 AM need more faithful Adorers. This is a beautiful, silent time with Our Lord on the Altar, exposed, venerable. The night lighting of the retablo is stunning and enhances the silent conversation. “Will you not spend one hour with Me?” To sign up for only ONE hour, between midnight – 5 AM, on the First Monday of each month, please call Carla at 949.493.6181.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As mentioned in earlier weeks, next month we will hold our Parish Pastoral Council elections. We recently had a successful Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) Information evening where we shared with interested parishioners the important ministry that the PPC provides for the parish as well as skills for potential future council mem-bers.

In today’s bulletin, you will find the application form to be used by anyone who might wish to be considered for election for the PPC. The deadline for returning the Forms to the Pas-toral Office is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH. Additional application forms can be found on our parish web site: www.missionparish.org Once you are at the “home” page, go to “Ministries” and then to “Parish Pastoral Council.”

Ballots for the Election will be in the bulletin the weekend of NOVEMBER 13TH & 14th. Ballot boxes will be outside of the Basilica that weekend. Ballots may also be returned to the Pastoral Offices by 4:30 PM on Wednesday, November 17th.

In accord with the Foundational Document for our Parish Pastoral Council, eight (8) members of the Council are elected by parishioners at large and four (4) members are appointed by the pastor. The newly elected and appointed Council members serve for three years.

ALL SAINTS DAY – NOVEMBER 1ST Monday, November 1st is the Solemnity of All Saints. In light of a decision made by the Bishops of the Western States, when a Holy Day of Obligation falls on either a Saturday or Monday, the precept to attend Mass is lifted. Hence, All Saints Day this year IS NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 AM (Serra Chapel); 8:00 AM (Serra Chapel – Latin –Missal of 1962); and 8:30 AM (Basilica).

ALL SOUL’S DAY— NOVENA OF MASSES

It is our faith that God has created each person for eternal life and that Jesus broke the chains of sin and death by his saving death and resurrection. Jesus’ paschal mystery enfolds the life of the Christian person and in an every-deeper way becomes the pattern of transformation that leads to life without end.

When a Christian person dies it is fitting that he or she be remembered at the Eucharistic table, which so profoundly celebrates this paschal mystery. The Eucharistic Sacrifice effects divine grace and provides a foretaste of the abundant life Jesus promises to all who believe. In Jesus, death is not the end but rather the door to eternal life.

When we lose someone we love in death, it is an act of love to pray for them and to ask the Church to offer the sacrifice of praise, the Holy Eucharist, for the repose of their soul. Those in loss or sorrow cry out for the consolation of God and this im-pels family, friends and fellow believers to provide the warmth of human consolation that includes our heartfelt prayer. Christians celebrate funeral rites for the deceased as an act of homage for that life, young or old, which was a gift from God, to pray for the soul of a loved one who suffered greatly or was troubled in spirit, commending the deceased to God who is acknowledged as the author of life and the hope of all the living.

Even after time has elapsed, it is natural to continue to pray for our beloved on important days in their lifetime and on the anniversary of their death or burial. The Church celebrates the Solemn Commemoration of the Faithful De-parted on November 2nd and the whole month of November has become a time when the Church offers prayers for the departed, those known to us and those who may have been forgotten.

As is our custom here at the Mission Parish, we will celebrate our traditional Novena of Mass for all who have gone before us in faith on November 2nd at the 8:30 AM daily Mass. You can name those whom you would like remem-bered in this Novena of Masses in the envelopes provided for those who use our parish envelopes. In addition, enve-lopes will be made available in the Basilica and Serra Chapel for this Novena of Masses prior to November 2nd.

May the Angels lead our loved ones into Paradise and may they have eternal rest.

On November 7th, Sunday, our annual Mass at 11 AM honoring the deceased members of the parish will be cele-brated We hope that you and your family and friends will share in the blessings of this Holy Mass, with all who have suffered loss in our Mission family since November of last year. Every beloved soul who has passed during this time will be prayerfully remembered by name.

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA El mensaje de este domingo puede ser este mismo: después de proclamar a un Dios, fuente de vida y que ama las cosas que ha creado por amor (primera lectura), se nos presenta a un Jesús que ofrece la salvación a un perdido, a uno considerado desgracia-do y vendido a los enemigos de su propio pueblo. Zaqueo es todo un símbolo de los marginados, pero que “buscan” algo diferente, aún a costa de hacer el ridículo (como en el relato de hoy). También impresiona el “estilo” de Jesús: a pesar de estar rodea-do de un gentío que le acosa, es capaz de descubrir “algo” en el gesto de Zaqueo: “levantó los ojos” y, además, quiere alojarse “en tu casa”. No, no son casualidades y de poca monta. Más bien el evangelista nos presenta la sensibilidad extrema de este joven Maestro que... “ha venido a buscar y salvar lo que estaba perdido”. Ésta es su misión y tarea, la que realiza como deseo explícito de Dios, cuya voluntad de salvación y de bien para la humanidad está fuera de toda duda. Todos somos un poco “zaqueos”: ricos, pero bajos de estatura, inquietos buscadores de la verdad y, a la vez, necesitados de higueras donde subir-nos para encontrarnos con una mirada salvadora, y ello aún a costa de sentir la mirada despectiva de quie-nes nos observan. Jesús “eleva los ojos” para alcanzarnos con su don, con la salvación que nos ofrece de parte de Dios mismo. También hoy, Él quiere “alojarse en mi casa”. ¡Seguro que sí! Y espera ese “algo” pa-ra hacer realidad, en plenitud, el don de vida en mí, en mi caminar; incluso, en mi pecado. ¡Casi nada! Pe-ro... ¡es verdad! ¡Dichosos quienes “buscan” algo en sus vidas, porque se encontrarán con la mirada de Cristo Jesús!

Carta del Pastor Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Una de las bellas imágenes de la vida parroquial es la “familia de fe”. Como herma-nos y hermanas en nombre del Señor, estamos todos verdaderamente vinculados con Dios nuestro Padre y nuestro Hermano, Jesucristo, como una familia. Toman-do esa imagen en cuenta, una vez más comparto con ustedes, a quienes considero mi familia de fe, mi estado actual de salud. Afortunadamente me he recuperado completamente del caso de diverticulitis que tuve a principios del pasado mes de julio. Agradezco mucho la atención de mis doctores así como sus va-liosas sugerencias para evitar otro ataque en el futuro. Como ellos siempre dicen "¡tome bastante agua!”. Sin embargo, la dificultad que tengo con mis piernas y para caminar continúa. Actualmente estoy bajo el cuidado de un excelente especialista neurólogo, quien está encargado del Centro Neuromuscular de UCI. Bajo sus cuidados y recomendaciones, continúo con una variedad de tratamientos tratando de conseguir un diagnóstico. Mientras que el diagnóstico exacto continúa siendo un misterio, me han recetado una me-dicina que relaja la rigidez de mis piernas con la esperanza de que me ayude a caminar con un paso más normal. Encontrar la dosis adecuada es un poco difícil - una dosis muy pequeña no tendría ningún efecto, y una dosis muy alta puede debilitar las piernas y crear la posibilidad de caídas. Para facilitar la dificultad al caminar por los pasillos así como subir y bajar las múltiples escaleras de la Basíli-ca, en algunas de las Misas, tal vez van a notar que empezaré la Misa y proclamaré el Evangelio y predicaré desde el altar en lugar de hacerlo desde el ambón. Con esto evito subir y bajar escaleras y es un poco más fácil para mí. Les agradezco mucho su comprensión al respecto. Durante las próximas semanas, voy a llevar a cabo otros exámenes que van a ser más precisos que espero me ayuden para encontrar un diagnóstico y un tratamiento más apropiado. Mientras tanto, sé que puedo contar con su continuo apoyo y sus oraciones. Al iniciar nuestra nueva semana en Cristo, encomendemos a la misericordia y al amor del Señor, a todos aquellos que se han ido antes que nosotros marcados con el signo de la fe, especialmente Maria Michela. MISA POR NUESTROS DIFUNTOS. Martes 2 de Noviembre a las 7:00 PM Celebraremos la Santa Misa para recordar a todas las almas de los fieles difuntos. Los invitamos a que traigan a la Misa de ese día una fotografía de un ser querido que haya fallecido; tendremos una mesa especial cerca del altar para que us-ted la coloque. También colocaremos nuestro tradicional “Altar de Muertos” dentro de la iglesia.

DIA DE ADORACIÓN AL SANTÍSIMO SACRAMENTO: LUNES 1 DE NOVIEMBRE. Como hijos de Dios necesitamos hacer un alto en nuestra vida y ponernos en silencio ante Jesús Sacramenta-do. Por lo menos una hora al mes acompaña a Cristo Eucaristía. El primer lunes de cada mes en la Mission Basílica iniciando después de la Santa Misa a las 8:30 AM y terminando con la bendición el próximo día justo antes de las 8:30 AM

MES DE NOVIEMBRE: Mes de FE y ESPERANZA El primer día del mes, la Iglesia nos propone como festividad la de Todos los Santos. Además como una fiesta principal, de categoría, de solemnidad. ¿Por qué nos pone esta festividad la Iglesia?. Para hacernos reflexionar que todos estamos llamados a la santidad, y como consecuencia de esa llamada, tenemos que ser conscientes y responsables de nuestra vida. ¿Qué modelo tenemos que seguir? El de todas las personas que han practicado asiduamente las bienaven-turanzas: “dichosos los pobres de espíritu..... los que lloran......los sufridos......los que padecen hambre.......los limpios de corazón.......los que son perseguidos por causa de la justicia.......porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos, porque ellos verán a Dios, etc. “estad alegres y contentos porque vuestra recompensa será grande en el cielo”. Estos son los SAN-TOS que celebramos. La liturgia del día hace referencia a las virtudes que practicaron.

Pero al día siguiente celebramos la festividad de los Fieles Difuntos. Recordamos a nuestros seres queridos, pero casi siempre con dolor, con sentimiento, con pena. Si algo tenemos seguro los hombres es la muerte. Todos los seres vivos mueren. Los animales y las plantas no lo saben; los hombres sí. Es una certeza inamovible. Pero un cristiano debe tener FE, garantía de lo que se ESPERA. La fe implica saber, y la iglesia sabe lo suficiente para nuestra salvación. En el prefacio de la misa de difuntos dice: “Brilla la esperanza de una feliz resurrección.... porque la vida de los que en Ti creemos, Señor, no termina, se transforma”. La Iglesia no dice esto para consolarnos, lo dice el mismo Cristo, que de-fiende la doctrina de la resurrección ante los saduceos (Mt. 22,23-33). Y resucitaremos “con nuestro propio cuerpo, que tenemos ahora” (Con. de Letrán IV: DS 801), pero este cuerpo será “transfigurado en cuerpo espiritual (1 Cor. 15,44). La muerte es el principio de la vida. El mes de noviembre debe ser vida, alegría. Tenemos, como cristianos, mo-tivos más que suficientes para estar alegres, vivir con fe y con esperanza.

Cuando nuestros seres queridos se nos mueren, es un acto de amor orar por ellos y pedir a la Iglesia que ofrezca el sacrificio de alabanza, la Santa Eucaristía, por el eterno descanso de sus almas. Aquellos que sufren esta pér-dida lloran y piden a Dios que les brinde consuelo y esto alienta a familiares, amigos y compañeros creyentes que com-parten su dolor y les proporcionan la ternura del consuelo humano que incluye la oración sincera. Los Cristianos cele-bran los ritos funerarios para los difuntos como un acto de homenaje a la vida del ser que se ha ido, joven o viejo, que fue un regalo de Dios, rogando por el alma del ser querido que sufrió o que se sentía turbado espiritualmente, enco-mendando al difunto a Dios que es reconocido como el autor de vida y esperanza para todos los seres vivientes.

Aún después de que pasa el tiempo, es natural continuar rogando y recordando a nuestros seres queridos du-rante fechas importantes de su vida y en el aniversario de su muerte o de su sepultura. La Iglesia celebra la Conmemo-ración Solemne de los Fieles Difuntos el día 2 de noviembre y ha designado durante todo el mes de noviembre ese tiempo para orar por los que se han ido antes que nosotros, aquellos que conocemos y los que hayan sido olvidados.

Novena de Misas

Como es nuestra costumbre aquí en la Parroquia de la Misión, nosotros celebraremos nuestra tradicional No-vena de Misas para todos aquellos que se han ido antes que nosotros en nuestra fe el día 2 de noviembre durante la misa de las 8:30 AM en inglés. Todos ustedes pueden hacer uso de los sobres proporcionados por la parroquia para que incluyan los nombres de aquellas personas que deseen sean recordadas en esta Novena de Misas. Estarán sobres disponibles en la Basílica para esta Novena de Misas antes del día 2 de noviembre.

El Domingo 7 de Noviembre celebraremos nuestra Misa Anual honrando a nuestros parroquianos difuntos. Esperamos que usted, su familia y amigos compartan las bendiciones de esta Santa Misa con todos aquellos que han sufrido pérdidas de sus seres queridos desde Noviembre del año pasado. Cada ser querido que ha fallecido durante este tiempo será recordado devotamente por su nombre. Qué los Ángeles guíen a nuestros seres queridos en el Paraí-so y que encuentren el eterno descanso.

Esta celebración es una tradición que está enraizada en la historia religiosa y cultural de nuestros países. Para una joven, la celebración de sus quince años puede convertirse en algo perdurable, en una experiencia que deje huella. Du-rante las sesiones de preparación, se les motivará a poner su celebración y su vida en las manos de Dios para que sea ocasión para acercar a la familia y renovar el sentido cristiano. Lo que pretendemos, es preparar de tal manera a la joven para que encuentre en ésta comunidad un motivo de cercanía a la vida parroquial. Les pedimos que se inscriban por lo menos 6 meses antes de la celebración. Los requisitos son los siguientes:

Ser miembro de la parroquia. haber recibido los sacramentos de bautismo y comunión.

Tenemos cuatro misas de quinceañeras en el año y solamente son en grupo. Les recomendamos que primeramente hable a pedir información de las fechas de las misas y si le interesa tener la celebra-ción en nuestra parroquia entonces aparte el lugar de la fiesta donde ustedes elijan.
