Improving the quality of life for people in Dorset, now and for the future
Broadband Update
Where we are now:• All Secondary and Middle Schools on 2Mb
Broadband (via MetroVPN)(some are shared with primary schools)
• 40 Primary schools on 2Mb Broadband (via LearningStream to MetroVPN Hubsite)
• 4 Primary Schools on 2Mb ADSL Broadband (+ 25 on order)
• 3 Primary Schools via ad-hoc connections
Improving the quality of life for people in Dorset, now and for the future
Broadband Update
Where we need to be by 2006(DfES requirement)
• All Secondary Schools on 8Mb Broadband(where economically sustainable, some Middle Schools, deemed Secondary, NOR < 400)
• All Primary Schools on 2Mb Broadband
Improving the quality of life for people in Dorset, now and for the future
Broadband Update
The BIG problem – high revenue costs(the grants end in 2006)
• 2Mb MetroVPN link£9,500 p.a. (+ £9,500 to install)
• 8Mb MetroVPN link£27,500 p.a. (+ £29,500 to install)
• 2Mb LearningStream link to Hubsite£5,000 p.a. (+ £12,000 to install hubsite)
Improving the quality of life for people in Dorset, now and for the future
Broadband Update
Need a solution with much lower revenue costs.
1. Lower cost for ‘the last kilometre’
2. Lower cost for the ‘backhaul’ to SWGfL by sharing fewer, larger links
3. A price level that schools can afford
Improving the quality of life for people in Dorset, now and for the future
Broadband Update
The Dorset solution
1. ‘Local Loop Unbundling’ and Wireless links for local connectivity
2. High bandwidth County Network using wireless links on existing masts between local nodes
3. A few high capacity (34Mb or 155Mb) links to the SouthWest Grid for Learning
