Loath to publicise “the best kept secret in ICCA”, Robin Miller from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre told delegates of the business benefits of ICCA’s client/supplier workshops.

The ICCA Congress opened with traditional Indian dancers and drums yesterday, courtesy of the Natya Stem Dance Company from Bangalore. Four traditional dances were performed, against the backdrop of a light show and music with an upbeat, modern tempo.

The performance was projected onto four screens in the Hyderabad International Conference Centre. One of the dances, called Ushas (the goddess of dawn) is inspired by Indian martial arts culture, and features real knives, swords and other weapons.

The performance followed the lighting of the lamp – the traditional Indian way of signifying light and life with each dignitary using a candle to ignite the lamp.

Philip Logan, chairman of the host committee, said: “Thanks for coming to incredible India. This event is like India with colour, light and sound - you will be bombarded with all these while you are here”.

Carnival weekend for two chaptersTwo ICCA chapters – the Mediterranean and UK and Ireland chapters – will be joining forces to stage a summit meeting during Nice Carnival Weekend from February 18-20, 2011. The weekend will begin with an ICCA Masterclass and will focus on utilising city and countrywide events for developing business for the meetings industry and is open to all ICCA members.

Immediate past president Christian Mutschlechner has stepped down from many years on the board but straight into the Convention Industry Council’s Hall of Leaders.

Christian steps down but not out - he’s into the Hall of Leaders

The news was announced by outgoing president Leigh Harry who said: “Christian being Christian, even when he steps down he does it with style. I am delighted to inform ICCA colleagues it has just been announced that he will be inaugurated into the Convention Industry Council’s Hall of Leaders next June, joining the only two other Europeans amongst that

The future is freeWhat will you do when your clients say they want a venue for free? Rohit Talwar posed this question to delegates during ‘The Future of Business Events’ session. Talwar, who has led a research programme known as Convention 2020, sponsored by ICCA and IMEX, said business models would evolve dramatically over the next five years.

“Clients will start to say ‘I want a different model; I want to share risk’ and the challenge is not to wait until they come to you, but to start thinking internally about how you could do it differently. What if someone came to you and said: I want a free venue? I already know of one PCO that has said they will not be charging in the future, but making their money through ancillary services instead.”

Christian Mutschlechner

Things people say“Organisers are asking: is it legal to bring a two day event down to one by giving delegates drugs to improve their concentration?” Rohit Talwar, chief executive, Fast Future, on the leaner business model

august group, Ray Bloom and Roger Tondeur, both of whom are with us here in Hyderabad.

“I’d also like to recognise the contributions over many years of Anthony Wong and Lutz Vogt, who resigned following the last General Assembly, Anthony for health reasons and Lutz because he was offered and took early retirement from the German Convention Bureau.”

Hyderabad commits to conferencesHyderabad will launch its own convention bureau on Wednesday, to reinforce its position as the ‘conference capital’ of India – a title it has earned since opening India’s first state-of-the-art convention facility, HICC.

Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary tourism, Andhra Pradesh, said the bureau would be known as Visit Hyderabad and added that the city would also be seeking private partnerships to remain at

a competitive advantage in the conference market.

ICCA’S CEO Martin Sirk, said India was now finally ready to welcome the world: “We were aware that India was a sleeping giant; this was a country many people wanted to engage with. The problem was its meeting infrastructure was very poor; old facilities, slow moving airports. With the opening of the ICC, India has got the starting point for a world class industry.”

Why do people volunteer for unpaid work? All was revealed at the ‘Understanding the aspirations of association leaders’ session yesterday.

From research carried out into the decision to volunteer for ASAE, the American Society of Association

Why work for nothing? Goodbye for nowHyderabad will be Nigel Brown’s last ICCA Congress – at least as a member of the ICCA team.

ICCA’s events project manager is leaving after six years to follow his wife to Singapore , where she has been relocated by her employer Booking.com. Self-confessed ‘techie geek’ Nigel, who has been helping to organise the annual congress since Cape Town, is yet to find himself a new job and is inviting Singaporean delegates to alert him to any opportunities.

He said: “I’m going to miss my colleagues and people I’ve met but hopefully I will see most of them again in the future when I return as a delegate.”

Mind your mannersTo shake hands or not to shake hands? Mastering business etiquette can be tricky for foreigners so the Middle East Chapter has dedicated a special area to this subject on its soon to be launched website.

The site offers information on Middle Eastern family values, women in business, Islam, using titles and gifts, dining and dress etiquette.

Chapter chair Medhat Nassar of Meeting Minds Dubai said: “We thought it would be interesting for organisations that are not based in the Middle East that want to understand how we do business.”

The new website will also include a careers section with job vacancies and a blog, to which chapter members can contribute.

‘Research business, not bed nights’The meetings industry needs wider research on its economic and social ben-efits to stop being positioned as a tourism service, according to Convention 2020 project director Rohit Talwar. “The convention business is not about providing bed nights – it is about creating the opportunities for knowledge exchange. Around the world tourism budgets have been cut but economic development never goes out of fashion.”

A LinkedIn ICCA group will be set up to discuss priority research areas for the industry ahead of a wider debate on industry research and research fund-ing to be held at next year’s ICCA Congress in Leipzig.

Executives, it’s been discovered that there are four types of volunteer: the writer, the teacher, the shaper and the local leader. The survey was based on 26,305 responses from members of 23 co-sponsoring organisations, all members of ASAE.

Key findings showed that: Association members reserve most of their volunteer hours for

community organisations, not associations.Association members expect career benefits from volunteering,

but they are also interested in the greater good. Volunteers respond best when asked directly to do meaningful

tasks and meaningful experience keeps them coming back. Millennial and Generation X members are slightly less engaged

and volunteer differently, but it was a myth that Generation X and Y are not joiners or volunteers like the baby boomers and earlier generations.

South Africa is investigating the setting up of a new national convention bureau to assist the cities in bidding for ‘mega-events’ including congresses and major sports events.

The project, assisted by former head of Melbourne Convention Bureau’s Gary Grimmer, is looking at best practice with Nomasonto Ndlovu of South Africa Tourism. Ndlovu said: “This is a work in progress as we examine best practice around the world but we have the backing of the cabinet for the project. The cities need our help with bids for the really big events that require investment including subventions. It’s not a matter of

New South African bureau to aid subvention programme

buying the business because the pay-back follows for these major events.”

The announcement comes after the first draft of a new strategy plan by ICCA’s Africa Chapter to increase the participation of other African nations.

Chairman of the chapter Rashid Toefy of Cape Town International Conference Centre said: “We realise that the Africa Chapter is too South Africa-centric. We want to ensure participation from all over Africa so that we can

Nomasonto Ndlovu

promote the entire continent. We have a billion consumers in Africa and we need to support the rest of Africa – it is the next big untapped market.”

Ndlovu said: “We are looking to change our approach. Our members are very excited by the prospect and are now calling for a follow-up meeting to the first chapter meeting and we are inviting new people in.”

Toefy says the first step will be a ‘gap analysis’ to identify the African organisations who should join ICCA.

New Qatar Centre on track to teach teachers Work on the much anticipated Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) is on track for its opening in less than a year. Confidence is such that Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), will stage its conference there from October 1 to 3, 2011.

The management team is claiming it to be the most state-of-the-art convention centre in the Middle East. With the main building exterior near completion, the focus is now on the interior. Seats and rigging have already been fitted within the theatre whilst theatre stage machinery for stage platforms, orchestra pit and the sound and lighting cockpits is being installed.

Auditoriums 1, 2 and 3 now have seating and carpet and work is being carried out on the conference hall including the installation of the ceiling.

“We are pleased, though not surprised, to report that construction is bang on course to meet with our scheduled opening date next year. Around 6,400 people are on site making it a real hub of activity and excitement as we enter the final stages of building”, said Anthony Gould, manager, assets and technical services.

No lapdancers, please, we’re Scottish! The key to city branding is to ensure the business you attract and the events you select align with one true brand identity, according to Glasgow City Marketing Bureau chief executive Scott Taylor. “There’s a lap dancing club in Glasgow, that’s naff. They want to come into membership but it would be detrimental to our integrity.”

Unsurprising really, given the city’s tagline is ‘Glasgow: Scotland with style’.

ICCA Association Database extended in 2010UIA data4,500 regularly occuring meetings within ICCA’s extensive database of international association events have been enhanced through access to supplementary UIA data. This is the first time these two long-established organisations have collaborated in this way. 3,000 “incomplete” profiles addedUp to now a considerable number of incomplete- (meeting series without a clear contact reference) or outdated (historical overview not up-to-date) profiles were automatically “hidden” in the online database. As ICCA members indicated that they would like to see this data nonetheless because they would be happy to further research these profiles for their marketing purposes, these profiles are now added to the online database.ICCA expects to generate a lot of useful information amongst its members, who can use an online “Report on Update” form to update and add missing information. The Association Database Online currently contains over 13,000 profiles of rotating and regularly occurring meeting and profiles of more than 130,000 individual events since 1873.

A near-miss when weaving through traffic in Hyderabad is almost inevitable. Unfortunately, one of the buses on the half-day tour to the Golkonda Fort failed to miss a lamppost when negotiating a tight exit, smashing the window to smithereens.

Hans Rissmann from the Edinburgh International Conference Centre was sitting in the closest seat. “We threw ourselves into the gangway to safety,” he said. “Several of the other panes were severely cracked. The guide suggested he should call for another bus to transfer the passengers but fearing the recruitment of another bus would take hours, if not days, we politely declined and unanimously voted to journey back to the conference centre. Everyone arrived safely, but it had started to rain, so we did get a bit wet.”

Cutbacks to governmental spending are good for the meetings market. They mean increased use of tele- and video-conferencing and a greater reliance on outsourcing, according to Francis Hayes, of the World Meteorological Organization, a

specialist body of the United Nations. “The global recession

represents a market opportunity for you,” he told delegates to the session on winning UN and EU institutional-type meetings.

The rewards were great but beware the pitfalls, like national politics, public servant decision makers and procurement departments.

“And then comes the contracts board – you never ever meet these people. You will probably only ever meet the influencers, never the decision makers. And remember, in the final analysis, value for money is the criterion.”

Three contestants competing for the ICCA Best Marketing Award this morning will have the benefit of increased exposure, according to last year’s winner. Bente Bratland Holm collected the award in 2009 on behalf of Norway Convention Bureau for its bare-cheeked ‘naked man’ campaign. “The best thing about it was our campaign got a new boost and we got a lot of attention from nearly all over the world. There were 29 articles written about it in the first month after the win. It was a three-year programme and it started a wave of renewed interest. We got calls for posters and mouse mats.”

She adds: “We don’t really dare to take the naked man away now, he’s more or less like a logo! We incorporate him on a smaller scale

Best marketing award wins excellent exposure for Norway’s naked man

and he is still the best ice breaker at trade shows – he gives us the opportunity to meet new people.”

The finalists for this year’s ICCA Best Marketing Award are: ExCeL London, UK; Iceland Convention and Incentive Bureau, Iceland and Sandton Convention Centre, South Africa. The winner will be decided by judging panel and an audience vote.
