What IBM N series VASA Provider is

IBM N series VASA Provider is a software component that supports the VMwareVASA (vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness) framework, first introduced invSphere 5. It acts as an information pipeline between IBM N series storage systemsand the vCenter Server, enabling you to monitor relevant storage system status.

IBM N series VASA Provider collects data from your storage systems and deliversinformation about storage topology, LUN and volume attributes, and events andalarms to the vCenter Server.

Although IBM N series VASA Provider is transparent to you after installation andconfiguration are completed, the information sent by IBM N series VASA Providerto the vCenter Server can help you make key decisions regarding the placement ofvirtual machines into datastores in the vCenter Server.Related concepts:“System requirements for IBM N series VASA Provider” on page 4Related tasks:“Overview of IBM N series VASA Provider installation and configuration process”on page 4“Installing IBM N series VASA Provider” on page 5

What alarms are

An alarm notifies you of storage system changes that could invalidate the servicelevel agreement for a virtual machine as specified in the storage capabilityassociated with the virtual machine storage profile.

Two types of alarms are supported in this release of IBM N series VASA Provider:v A thin provisioning alarm, which is set when a thinly provisioned datastore

reaches its defined thresholdv A capability alarm, which is set when a published storage capability for a volume

or LUN changes

Alarms have one of the following statuses:v Green (Normal)v Yellow (Warning)v Red (Alert)Related concepts:“What IBM N series VASA Provider is” on page 3“IBM N series VASA Provider architecture” on page 3

What storage capabilities are

A storage capability is a set of storage system attributes that identifies a specificlevel of storage availability, capacity, and performance (storage service level) forthe storage object associated with this storage capability.

IBM N series VASA Provider generates a storage capability that defines the storageservice level for each LUN or volume that matches the vCenter Server list ofregistered objects attached to an ESX or ESXi host and sends it to the vCenterServer. Storage capabilities can be either system-defined, which are generated byIBM N series VASA Provider, or user-defined, which are manually created in thevCenter Server.

The vCenter Server then associates a LUN or volume's storage capability with thedatastore that is provisioned on that LUN or volume. This enables you toprovision a virtual machine into a datastore that matches the virtual machine'sstorage profile and to ensure that all datastores in a datastore cluster have thesame storage service levels.

Note: The storage capabilities list displayed in the vCenter Server includes thedatastore type, either NFS or VMFS, that is associated with each of the capabilities.

Note: IBM N series VASA Provider does not check the state of the SnapMirror orSnapVault relationship when generating a storage capability.

IBM N series VASA Provider generates the following storage capabilities:

Name Description Characteristics

Hybrid Hybrid storage Storage using SSD and any otherdisk type

Hybrid;Replication

Replicated hybrid storage Hybrid and SnapMirror orSnapVault

Value Storage on cost-efficient disks Storage using only SATA disks
