Why Were Here Profiles ofEntrepreneurs in the Georgia Avenue Gateway

Project Description

Project PurposeMlSsion

The Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation (GGARC) is an inter-jurisdictional community development corporation that was chartered in 1997 to spearhead positive commercial interest along the Georgia Avenue corridor between downtown Silver Spring and Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC Since its inception GGARCs mission has been to create and maintain a viable safe and neighborhoodshyfriendly commercial district rooted in the historical cultural and ethnic diversity that has been the backbone ofthe Georgia Avenue community A National Mainstreet Community designation for the Washington DC segment in 2003 opened new opportunities for funding and technical support in revitalizing this historic commercial area

The purpose ofthe proposed brochure Why Were Here Profiles ofEntrepreneurs in the Georgia Avenue Gateway is to build support ofthe DC segment ofthe Gateway Georgia Avenue commercial corridor by providing an historical perspective about the businesses and their owners and their commitment to the community In addition because neighborhood teens will be invited to assist with this effort the development and distribution ofthe proposed brochure will encourage future supporters ofthe local businesses and introduce area teens to various career opportunities

Project Overview

The Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation is proposing a paneled brochure that will provide profiles of representative business owners along the Gateway Georgia Avenue Mainstreet corridor As an historical document the brochure will explain in short profiles-100-lS0 words--what

f business each business owner is in why heshe chose an upper Georgia Avenue location and the specific ways that each is adapting to the historic economic downturn of 2009 The stories capture the indomitable spirit ofthe American small business owner a vastly underappreciated sector ofthe national economy that creates 70 percent of the net new jobs added to the economy annually A proposed profile would include a picture and the following information

bull Name of owner(s) bull Name and address ofbusiness bull Years in business on Georgia Avenue bull How heshe decided to go into this business bull Why heshe chose Gateway Georgia Avenue as hislher business home bull Key strategies that heshe is using to attract and maintain customers despite the 2009 downturn

The brochure is not intended to provide profiles ofall of the businesses Nor could it achieve that depth of information with the time and resources available Rather it will capture a representative sample of business owners with various degrees of longevity on upper Georgia A venue to review and compare how each has stayed in business and is grappling with the greatest economic crisis since the New Deal generation (1933-36) The Project Director would work with the Gateway Georgia Avenue Executive Director and the Humanities Scholar in developing criteria for inclusion and making the fmal selections Entrepreneurs to consider for inclusion include

bull Robert and Ann Dixon Dixons Pest Control (since 1978) bull McGuire Funeral Service Inc (since 1974) bull Sandra Cox American Securities and Communications bull DiCarlo Home Interior (since 1977) bull Tim and Kelly Shuy Ledo Pizza and Pasta (since 2006)

As monies allow copies ofthe brochure will be produced for every household within the Shepherd Park Takoma Colonial Village North Portal and Ft Stevens communities (estimated 3000 copies)

Role of the Humanities Scholar

The Humanities Scholar would ensure the integrity and accuracy ofthe information to be included in the brochure More specifically the Humanities Scholar would be responsible for three tasks reviewing and adapting the questions and the interview protocol guiding the selection of businesses to be included and eviewing the fmal draft for historical accuracy and completeness
