Going to the hot springs on a cold day is probably one of my favorite things to do. A major bene t of living at Camp Humphreys is that we are a short drive/cab ride away from Asan Spavis. Over the summertime, you may have made trips there to the outdoor water park . Over the wintertime, Asan Spavis transforms into an indoor and outdoor hot springs that also has a bath house.

Don’t get deterred by the cold weather.Being in a bubbly hot pool or jacuzzi in the wintertime is probably the most refreshing, relaxing and surreal feeling ever. You don’t have to be naked to be at the hot springs. In fact the dress code for the hot springs is 1) bathing suit, or even a swimming t-shirt over your bathing suit (I’ve seen people wear them there) and 2) you must have a swim cap or hat on at all times. So for those of you who have been itching to get out of your comfort zone and try something new and exciting this winter, this is the article for you!

I went on a Tuesday morning. The drive from the CPX Gate was super easy. It

was literally a straight drive for about 15 minutes. I made one or two right turns by following the signs to Asan Spavis (and my handy dandy GPS, but I probably could have done it without the GPS) and *BOOM* I was there in less than 20 minutes.

If I have any wisdom to impart onto you today, then I want you to learn how to say or show, “우리 평택에살아요” (pronounced “woori Pyeontaek eh sah-rah-yo”), which means, “we live in Pyeongtaek”, and guess what? Pyeongtaek residents receive 30% discount. They will also ask you if you’re in the military, or “군인” (goon-in), and receive a further 20% off! Yes, you read that correctly. Your entire experience at Asan Spavis will be a whopping 50% off! I do not know how long this promotion will last until, but from my knowledge, it has been around for quite a few years.

I asked for a spa & bathhouse pass, which gave me access to both the indoor/outdoor pools as well as the bathhouse. Access to part of the water park is also included. They have slides and a lazy river, all with heated water, and is conveniently covered to block the cold winds. Normally 37,000 won during the week, but I paid a total of 18,500 won.

First stop, locker rooms. Word to the wise: you need to be okay with nakedness. Being naked in a locker room is quite the norm out here in Korea. If it’s your rst time and want to get used to the nakedness, just don’t make eye contact and you will be ne! No one is looking at you. Because we went rst thing, as soon as they opened on a Tuesday morning, my friend and I were the only ones in there.

Change into your bathing suit and head on out to the exit on the right towards the bathing pools. Next, rinse off and head into any pool you see. There is a fun kids’ section. The center has a large pool with smaller pools that have massage jets. There is even Dr. Fish (where tiny little sh feed off of the dead skin from your feet) which can be enjoyed for KRW 5,000. Note: No need to carry money into the bathing pools. All transactions are charged to your locker key. Genius!

Check out the outdoor pools. The water is all heated and absolutely awesome. It may be cold while hopping from one pool to another, but once you are inside the pool, you feel like you’re in heaven! There’s a ginseng pool, herb pool and further down, there’s a large heated pool for those looking to do laps or leisure swims. To the side of the pool are three jacuzzi pools, all at different heat levels. When you rst dip your toes into the hot pool, if it’s too hot, jump into the other temperature levels and work your way up!

After about two hours of switching back and forth between pools and having some catch up time with my friend, we then decided to go back indoors and into the bathhouse. Dress code here: No clothes. To be honest, as soon as you get naked, you might feel uncomfortable for a total of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes you realize that,“hey, everyone else is naked, having a fun time and minding their own business”, and then you get

After 5 minutes you realize that,“hey, everyone else is naked, having a fun time and minding their own business”, and then you get

comfortable and stop worrying about it.

There’s an outdoor pool. One that is really cold and another that is really hot. This is the traditional style of hot spring, originally from Japan. Traditionally, shocking your pores by switching between the cold and hot water truly cleans your pores out and relaxes the body. Now, I am not so much of the traditionalist with this and I will admit, I stuck to the hot pool when outdoors.

Next I explored the saunas. There is a jade sauna, charcoal sauna and steam sauna. Then, I explored all the pools, where there were hot herbal pools, jade pools and other pools of various hot temperatures. After a while, I was pretty done with feeling hot and was ready to shower and exit, but not before I booked myself a 때 (ddae) body scrub for 20,000 won. This body scrub involves a woman completely scrubbing your body of all its dead skin. It’s the cleanest feeling ever! There are other massages and body treatments and facials available and their menu is in English. The ‘ddae’ body scrub however is not on the English menu and I highly recommend it.

After the body scrub, next step is to shower. Note: I took my own body wash, shampoo and conditioner with me and stored it in my locker till I was ready to use. They have hair dryers, body lotion and a tiny vending machine lled with toiletries like disposable razors, face masks, hair keratin treatment packs, etc.

Painting has always been a major genre of Korean art since ancient times with its roots in the unique lines and colors. In general, Korean paintings can be categorized into several ways according to its dynasty and subject.

The history of Korean painting starts from the three kingdoms period (18 B.C. - 668 A.D.) and includes the energetic style of the Koguryo, the elegant paintings of Baekje and the fanciful lines of the the Shilla works. It re ects early Korean people’s humanity and artistic techniques.

Due to the powerful in uence of Buddhism, the painting of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) were mostly based on the religion. Also during this period, the idea of paintings based on actual scenery, rather than stylized ideas, began to increase in popularity.

The Joseon Dynasty, by contrast, was more interested in the symbolism of plants and animals such as dragons and the Sagunja, plants known as “Four Noble Lords” (orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo and plum tree). Idealized landscapes was another focus for them. Folk painting increased in demand during this time, too.

Paintings can be broken down into four ways by its subject: landscapes, portraits, genre and Minhwa.

Sansuhwa (산수화), the landscape paintings, represents both nature itself and one’s stylized imagination of nature. Painting an actual scene became more popular during the mid-Joseon period. During this time, many painters started to travel for search of beautiful scenery to paint.

Portraits were widely painted throughout Korean history, but large numbers of portraits were produced during the Joseon period. The subjects of portraits were mostly kings, of cials, Buddha, literati or aristocrats and posing for a portraint painting was standardized with the

hands hidden in sleeves. In Korean art, genre painting (Pungsokhwa, 풍속화) refers to pictures of people’s hobby and daily life. Before the 18th century, these paintings were generally idealized images of noble member’s life, but the subject matter shifted away from the noble to the commoners. Due to this shift, works of the 18th century period are highly valued for their candid and realistic re ection of Joseon society.

Kim Hong Do and Shin Yun Bok are the most common artists of genre painting. They developed a passionate interest in depicting the daily activities of commoners in their work through their paintings. Kim Hong Do preferred portraying people in various situations and scenes of everyday life with humor while Sin Yun Bok was absorbed in capturing an adult relationship of noble people with Giseang (기생).

Minhwa (민화), or folk painting, is artwork by commoners without formality and constraint. The subject was usually animals and plants like tigers and birds or mythical creatures like dragons. They have their own unique characteristics and are known for their humor and symbolism. It expresses the thoughts of commoners with great wit in a rough format, strong lines, vivid color and unconventional layout. The symbolisms found in Minhwa are mostly wishes of good health and well-being. Traditional paintings are valuable in a way that re ects the mythology, religion, changing circumstances of culture and view points of the past era. It is reproduced in contemporary ways today by using them as designs for smart phone cases, accessories, stationery and so on.
