From the Principal’s Desk – School Council On 7 Feb a notice was sent home calling for nominations for School Council for the next two years. Each year half the Council positions become available. Nominations closed 14 Feb at 4:00pm. Two people nominated for four vacancies so I would like to declare that Jacquie

Nicholson and Alan McKinlay are elected to the parent member category and Kym Ryan is elected to the DET member category. As insufficient nominations have been received for the parent member category I have called for further nominations today. All nominations are to be lodged by 19 Feb 4:00pm. A separate letter and FlexiBuzz notice was sent out this morning to all families. Please consider this important role.

Welcome to new staff at Heany Park PS We have selected a new Performing Arts Teacher. Her name is Ms Elizabeth Eastwood and she will be starting on 27 February. We are very excited to have Liz join our team. As well as Performing Arts expertise Liz also loves lizards and is an expert in this area and did some work at our school when the atrium was established. Liz is also a zoologist and runs birthday parties with reptiles!

School Assembly There will be a whole school assembly tomorrow 16 Feb. The Middle School students will be presenting. OSHClub News Next week, 23 Feb, students who are selected as Junior School Council representatives for their grade will be presented with their badges.

At the first assembly of the year the Student Leaders for 2018 were presented with their badges. Each year the students are consulted and have input to the roles and the selection process. On 26 Feb YLead, a training organisation, will provide leadership training to contribute to empowering the students to negotiate action within and beyond the school to help make our

learning community and/or the world a better place. These are the Captain roles for this year. We wish them all the very best in their endeavours and will support them to have student voice in our school.

Getting to Know You Interviews 6 & 8 Feb

It was good to have most parents book a time to meet with their new teacher last week. If you still haven’t managed to do this please contact your teacher and organise a time. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning or time at school, please make an interview time with your class teacher any thime during the year. We encourage this strongly.

From the Assistant Principal’s Desk – School Attendance for Students In accordance with the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6 – 17 years unless an exemption has been granted. Parents/guardians must enrol a child of compulsory school age at a registered school and ensure the child attends school at all times when the school is open for instruction. Students are expected to attend the school in which they are enrolled, during normal school hours every day of each term, unless:

x there is an approved exemption from school attendance or attendance and enrolment for the student, or

x the student is registered for home schooling and has only a partial enrolment in a school for particular activities.

A principal or regional director (depending on the circumstances) may authorise an exemption and provide written approval for student attendance or attendance and enrolment to be exempt or reduced to less than full time. For absences where there is no exemption in place, the parent/guardian must promptly provide an explanation on each occasion to the school. The school will determine if the explanation provided is a reasonable excuse for the purposes of the parent meeting their responsibilities under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. Schools must maintain attendance records, identify and follow up unexplained absences, and develop policies to support and maintain attendance.

Notifying parents of an unexplained student absence

A review of the Attendance Guidelines for schools was undertaken in Term 4, 2017. The review and resulting changes to the Guidelines will help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours and ensure that schools are supported in their duty of care obligations. The new requirement for schools under the Guidelines is to contact parents/guardians as soon as practicable on the day of a student’s absence. This was formerly three days. While the changes will be introduced from Term 1 2018, full implementation by all government schools will be required by the end of Term 2, 2018. Adriana Dickinson (Assistant Principal)

Media Release –Stud Park’s Community Garden Display Tuesday 13 February 2018 Stud Park Shopping Centre has partnered with Heany Park Primary School working on a community project involving the collaboration of 300 junior to senior school students. The Heany Park Primary School students’ artwork, featuring 300 bespoke pieces of wooden fruit, will be on display from 26 March at Stud Park in a farmer’s style vegetable garden installation. The project is part of Stud Park’s repositioning strategy to become the local Centre for all your fresh food needs. Stud Park, Marketing Manager Fiona Murray says, ‘working on this community initiative with Heany Park Primary School has been a wonderful activity connecting the local community whilst developing students’ understanding of healthy eating options. It is a great reminder of what fresh food really is about.’ The Community Garden will be on display showcasing the primary school children’s artwork, from Monday 26 March through until Friday 13 April, located in the mall outside Kmart and Just Jeans.

School Banking Opportunity Heany Park Primary is offering the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. School Banking is a way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for rewards. The rewards available during 2018 are:

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year. School Banking day is Friday. Each week you need to hand your deposit books to your teacher We will be holding a School Banking Stall at our school:

Please join us and find out more about the School Banking program and how your child can get involved. If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account for your child you can visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. A School Banking representative will be available at the Banking Stall to show you how you can do this. In order to verify yourself and your child, you will need your driver’s licence and your child’s birth certificate, but if you don’t have these with you on the day, you can complete verification online at home.
