The Sophia Mural at Holy Names University (HNU) was created by artist Louisa Jenkins and assisted by Sister Maria Luisa Wolfskill ’49 † and HNU art students. Located on the east side of Brennan Hall, the Mural is a mosaic symbol of wisdom and the work pursued by a Catholic Liberal Arts Institution. The sculpture emanating from the head, symbolizing wisdom and connecting with each of the three mosaic panels, suggests wave lengths of power – Light, Creativity and Energy – infused into the three academic areas of: Philosophy and Theology, Arts and Letters and Natural Sciences.

Philanthropy

In ancient Greek tradition, Zeus was so fed up with the stupidity and crudeness of men and women that he wanted to destroy them. Fortunately for us, Prometheus intervened and shared two things that make us human. The first was the gift of fire, previously the exclusive property of the gods. The second was the virtue of philanthropy, literally the love (philos) of humankind (anthropos). These gifts were the first acts of philanthropy. Given fire, we were able to progress. Given the ability to love others, we were empowered to become fully human.

The Judeo-Christian tradition catches this same spirit of empowering phi-lanthropy in the Golden Rule, which Mother Marie Rose Durocher, the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, echoes when she asks us to “Extend a hand to one another to help surmount the difficulties that occur.”

Holy Names University exists only because of the love and generosity that the Sisters, trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and you manifest for our mission. Grounded in the core val-ues of the liberal arts and the Catholic tradition, we try to touch each genera-tion of students, preparing them to think critically, seek and discern the

truth, communicate effectively and persuasively, and become skilled professionals guided by love, ethics, social justice, diversity, and generosity.

This special issue includes the names of those individuals and organizations that have shown their love of our students and the common good by sharing their resources with Holy Names University. Each gift is an act of philanthropy, an act of love, and a gift empowering the receiver and ennobling the giver.

Please receive this report as our testimony to these our human heroines and heroes whose gifts sustain, transform, and challenge us anew to “liberate the spirit” in all whose lives we touch.

Despite the global economic insta-bility over the past three years, the Holy Names University community made a clear commitment to ensuring students’ access to transformative educational services by supporting the Student Cen-ter capital campaign. Since launching the ambitious campaign in the spring of 2008, Holy Names University raised $1.861 million in gifts and pledges, surpassing the revised campaign goal of $1.784 million.

Thanks to the generosity of loyal donors, the campaign which ended in December 2009, provided the funding to modernize the first floor of Brennan Hall into a 15,800 square-foot, full service Student Center. The renovated facility includes the new Y & H Soda Foundation Student Center Wing and the Joyce and Rodger Dobbel Aca-demic Wing, which now house new and vital resources such as the HED-CO Technology Support Center, the S.H. Cowell Foundation Curriculum Resource Library, and the J.M. Long Foundation Student Lounge.

The Y & H Soda Foundation Student Center Wing integrates and expands student services with the Neil McDaniel Career Services Center, the Jim and Rosaleen Kelly Academic Support Services Center, and the J.M. Long Foundation Health and Wellness Center.

According to Dav Cvitkovic, Vice President of University Advancement, “the Student Center capital campaign achieved and surpassed its fundraising and programmatic objectives. The cam-paign fulfilled three of the University’s Strategic Plan strategies: 1) improve campus infrastructure and student services; 2) invest in technology-related infrastructures, training and develop-ment that supports collaborative and interactive learning and communica-tion; and 3) offer academic and campus life programs for civic engagement, structured service-learning international study and internship programs.”

Throughout the Holy Names University community, the renovated facility has instilled great pride in the University and created a harmonious student-centered campus that promotes student-faculty interaction and sets the path for academic success for years to come. Thank you to our generous donors who made the new Student Center a reality.

Endowment GivingThe Power of Permanence

Seven endowed scholarships have been established at Holy Names University in the past three years, totaling over $3.3 million. Each donor wished to become a partner with the University assuring that our students are able to afford a first-class educa-tion, particularly during this time when the cost of a college education seems prohibitive. Their stories and their reasons for funding a scholarship, which are each unique and inspiring, are included here.

Lorena ‘51† and Bob Thorup wanted to support students who were planning to become teachers, as well as to promote the field of educa-tion. Remembering their college experi-ences (Lorena was an HNU alumna from the Class of 1951 and Bob gradu-ated from San José State College) as well as their own years of teaching, they hoped to assist some HNU students to complete their studies and give back to their communities through the gift of education, with some perhaps teaching in Oakland, their native city.

Wesley and Martha Jones’ granddaughter, Marisa, first visited HNU in 2001 and they were a part of her educational journey from that first day until her graduation in May of 2005. Since Wesley and Mar-tha were so impressed with the educa-tion and individual attention their granddaughter received from HNU’s

faculty and staff, it made sense for them to fund an endowed scholarship at HNU in memory of their parents. Since the establishment of the scholar-ship, they have continued their com-mitment to Holy Names University through a legacy gift that will perpetu-ate their family values.

Ann Reynolds, a member of the HNU Board of Trustees, believes in the mission of Holy Names University, especially its emphasis on reaching talented and bright students who might not attend college without financial support. Reynolds has observed that when the University receives donations, they are carefully and frugally spent and used to the maximum. Ann has audited classes at HNU and says, “HNU has a good nurturing feeling. It is an excit-ing place to learn!” A scholarship for women entering the MBA program was established in Ann’s name in 2006 and, after hearing about our challenge campaign, she informed us that HNU will be remembered in her estate plans as well, thereby creating a lasting legacy of giving.

President Emeritus, Sister Rosemarie Nassif, SSND, Ph.D. received a standing ovation from the 175 guests attending the Rose Gala on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Claremont Country Club. The auspicious occasion, held in honor of Sr. Rosemarie’s July 2010 retirement, benefited the Frieda Mary Nassif Scholarship. Established in honor of Sr. Rosemarie’s mother, the Holy Names University community paid homage to Sr. Rosemarie’s eleven years of service by raising a total of $160,000.

The enormity of the crowd in at-tendance at the Rose Gala and the overwhelming number of donations collected are a testament to the vital role Sr. Rosemarie assumed in shar-ing the mission of HNU with the greater Oakland/Bay Area community. Throughout the Gala, accolades of appreciation were echoed from every corner of the banquet room, including a heartfelt presentation by the HNU Board of Trustees, a toast officiated by Julie Echaniz ’75, President of Alumni Executive Board, and local and na-tional recognition from Oakland’s new Mayor Jean Quan and the Office of Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

“I think Sr. Rosemarie has been an amazing ambassador for the charism of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary,” said HNU Trustee, Cynthia Canning, SNJM ’68 MA.

“She has articulated multiple times to every constituency that is part of this university the Sisters’ commitment to social justice and the full develop-ment of the human person.” According to Ronald V. Rosequist, Chair of the Board of Trustees, “It is quite clear that she has taken a university that was in some difficulty some 11 years ago and created a foundation for excellence. Sr. Rosemarie managed to bring to the campus a real can do spirit; a spirit of integrity.”

The Rose Gala achieved a celebratory climax when HNU Trustee Steven Borg ’86, the evening’s official Master of Ceremonies, implored all attendees to honor Sr. Rosemarie’s legacy by contributing to the growth of the University’s endowment through gifts to the Frieda Mary Nassif Scholarship. In response, approximately $40,000 was raised at the Rose Gala itself as a result of Steven’s persistence.

The Frieda Mary Nassif Scholarship will be awarded to deserving under-graduate students. The principal of this scholarship will become part of the Holy Names University Scholar-ship Endowment Fund. This fund, comprised of many endowed scholar-ships, is held by the University with the power of reinvestment. Income from the fund is used for scholarship awards, while the principal remains invested. Alumni and friends who

contribute to the growth of the Holy Names University endowment benefit future generations of students who will receive the scholarship from their gifts.

According to Sr. Rosemarie, the Rose Gala and the funds raised to support student scholarships “was a tremendous tribute to all that we [the Holy Names University community] have achieved and to the stellar tradition and history of Holy Names University.” During her closing remarks, Sr. Rosemarie indicated that establishing the Frieda Mary Nassif Scholarship was a prime opportunity to honor her mother while nurturing the future aspirations of HNU students, stating “My mother’s prayers have been instrumental in help-ing us achieve all that we have. This scholarship in my mother’s name will forever memorialize my connection and our Nassif family connection to the future of Holy Names University. This formal connection in perpetuity means very much to me.”

Alumni Power Propels Future Gifts exceeding the Legacy Challenge

The 2007 - 2012 Strategic Plan challenged Holy Names Uni-versity to increase its endowment and secure $1 million in new planned gift commitments by 2012. Maura Kelly Koberlein ’84 and Derril Koberlein ’84 agreed to help HNU raise $1 million in planned gifts by matching dollars of newly declared planned gifts up to a maximum amount designated by them. We are pleased to announce that HNU has exceeded our goal and received notification of over $4 million in new planned giving commitments! Sixteen alumni and friends of the University have joined the ranks of the Marie-Rose Durocher Legacy Society since 2008 by remembering us in their estate plans.

Many of them have stories much like Frances Paganini who returned to col-lege in her late 50s and graduated from HNU in 1974. She was encouraged to establish a Charitable Remainder Trust after her husband died. As she reflected on potential beneficiaries for the trust, her thoughts were drawn back to her alma mater and her happy experiences at Holy Names. Because she desired to give back to the institution that gave so much to her, Frances named the University as a beneficiary of her Trust. Frances recognized the importance that a college education played in her life and she has become a partner with Holy Names University in providing for the University’s long-term financial planning and ongoing success.

The launching of our new Planned Giving Newsletter, Focus on the Future, in the spring of 2010 enabled us to showcase the renaming of our Legacy Society (now the Marie-Rose Duro-cher Legacy Society, in memory of the Foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names) and to share stories of our very generous Legacy Society members. After receiving the newsletter, alumni and friends recognized the importance of assisting HNU in furthering its mis-sion of education, and alerted us about their remembrance of the University. HNU is indeed blessed! Should you wish to learn more about the power of planned giving, please contact Sister Carol Sellman at (510) 436-1265 or [email protected].

“Alumni gifts of both their time and resources are a powerful influence on the future success of our alma mater. Loyal alumni who give back to HNU are our most priceless gift.”

The Power of Participation

Annual GivingOn September 29, 2010 and October 27, 2010, Frances Paganini ’74 and Agnieszka Winkler ’67, gra-ciously hosted receptions to welcome and introduce the University’s new President, William J. Hynes, Ph.D., to the greater Bay Area community. The alumnae host, provided the University with an invaluable opportunity to pres-ent the vision of HNU’s newest leader.

Frances Paganini ’74 is a member of the Marie-Rose Durocher Legacy Society. Agnieszka Winkler ’67, an HNU Regent, is a distinguished entrepreneur and Founder and CEO of Winkler Advertising. Each of the events helped to further the Univer-sity’s connections to an array of new individuals and community groups, thanks to Frances and Agnieszka’s participation.

Frances and Agnieszka’s contributions prove that active alumni participation is essential to furthering the HNU mission and our commitment to the full development of each student. In addition to cocktail receptions and an-nual alumni events such as Homecom-ing, the impact of alumni participation is felt by students and their families on an ongoing basis. It is because of alumni support that many of our students are able to keep their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for a successful future alive.

The Ninth Annual Red Rose Golf Tournament on April 26, 2010 at the Claremont Country Club set a new fundraising record. Led by Honorary Chair, Gary Sitzmann and Co-Chairs, Steve Callaway and Matt Heafey, the event netted $110,000 to benefit the Mission Scholarship Fund.

The Tournament was not only a perfect day for a round of golf, but an invaluable opportunity for those in attendance to score two holes in one in support of HNU. During the Tour-nament’s frenzied live auction, Don Kennedy, Honorary Chair of the 2009 Red Rose Golf Tournament, stood up to recognize the late Trustee Emeritus, Neil W. McDaniel. In honor of Neil’s decades of support of the University, Don announced that he would match all gifts of $1,000 or more to the Mis-sion Scholarship Fund. In response to Don’s challenge, the auction hall burst into life as paddle after paddle rose in unison, underscoring Don’s tribute to one of the University’s greatest friends and securing much needed funds for student scholarships. At the end of the day, the funds raised from Don’s one-of-a-kind tribute, made it possible for the 2010 Tournament to exceed expectations, raising over six figures in net proceeds for the first time in the Tournament’s nine-year history.

As a critical component of the Univer-sity’s Annual Fund program, the Mis-sion Scholarship Fund is instrumental in supporting the educational aspira-tions of students who face significant financial and personal challenges in obtaining an undergraduate degree. Since the Golf Tournament’s incep-tion, approximately $750,000 has been raised in nine years to help deserving HNU students realize their dreams of a college education.

“ The HEDCO Technology Support Center shows that we can have a vision, and that we can be bold, and that we can deliver despite hard economic times. This facility demonstrates an eye towards the future of our University.”

Elena Olkhovskaya, Ph.D., HNU Director of Information Technology

Page 23: Holy Names University Annual Report 2009-10

Located in the center of Bren-nan Hall and flanked by the Joyce and Rodger Dobell Academic Wing to the north and the Y & H Soda Foundation Student Center Wing to the south, the HEDCO Technology Support Center (TSC) is the new, smart heart of the Holy Names University campus. A priority component of the $1.861 mil-lion Student Center capital campaign, the TSC links student and academic services to meet the research and instructional needs of both faculty and students. Featuring wide screen Mac computers, integrated multi-platform technology, and geometric moveable tables suited for flexible pedagogical groupings or individual study, the TSC is the University’s premier high-tech collaborative learning environment.

All of the equipment acquired was made possible by a generous grant from The Fletcher Jones Foundation.

“When the renovation project came about, we saw the project as an excel-lent opportunity to not only upgrade the community’s technological re-sources, but also to create a visible, accessible and creative space for faculty and students” said Elena Olkhovskaya, Ph.D., HNU Director of IT.

Since the TSC’s grand opening in the spring of 2010, Elena’s team has continued to receive an overwhelming number of reservation requests from students and faculty who use the new facility for meetings, workshops and

classes. “One of the key concepts of the Technology Support Center is flexibil-ity. We designed it in such a way that you can use desktops, notebooks, or bring your own; it doesn’t matter. With the SMART Board, you can share presentations, but also have conferenc-ing capabilities so that a student in the back row can project their work from their screen and share it with rest of the class” shared Elena.

From a faculty perspective, the collab-orative nature of the TSC is conducive to sharing information with students and discussing ideas instead of having students huddling around one comput-er screen. “I use the HEDCO Tech-nology Support Center for lab-based mathematics classes where I teach two sections of Math, one traditional lecture class and an online class featur-ing ALEKS, an artificially intelligent system that continually assesses each student’s mastery of the course objec-tives and prescribes an individualized course of instruction,” commented Christian Aviles-Scott, M.Ed, HNU Lecturer in Mathematics. “By having the students work in the Technology Support Center, I can act as a one-on-one tutor when necessary” he shared.

Thanks to the support of loyal donors, the new HEDCO Technology Support Center affirms and embraces the University’s technology vision as a modern, mobile and digital campus.

“Holy Names is blessed to have been the beneficiary of Neil’s wisdom and support. Through the power of philanthropy, Neil’s legacy lives on in the 21st century face of our campus community.”

Dav Cvitkovic, MBA, Vice President for University Advancement

Page 25: Holy Names University Annual Report 2009-10

Throughout his life, the late Neil W. McDaniel, Trustee Emeritus, harnessed the power of philanthropy to inspire others to achieve their dreams. Student by student, campaign by cam-paign, Neil’s contributions personified the philanthropic might of the human spirit, and its ability to imbue 21st cen-tury academic excellence for the Holy Names community.

Neil passed away peacefully on Sun-day, September 5, 2010. His personal mantra was “integrity, performance, and improvement.” He demonstrated these qualities to the Holy Names com-munity when he became a Holy Names University Regent in 1983 and later as a Trustee and member of the University’s Institutional Advancement Committee.

Neil’s leadership and strategic direction provided the necessary foundation to champion the University through all facets of its philanthropic endeavors. Neil gave his support and guidance to several Holy Names University efforts covering the full spectrum of support including capital, endowment, legacy and Annual Fund gifts. He gave his support to the Valley Center for the Performing Arts campaign, the Science Facilities Reconstruction Project, the campaign for the newly-renovated Student Center in Brennan Hall, the Michael Feinstein Benefit Concerts, the Annual Red Rose Golf Tourna-ment benefiting the Mission Scholar-ship Fund and the many scholarships he funded.

The power of Neil’s philanthropy is infectious; it spreads like a wild fire in the generous ways it inspires individu-als to achieve their best and to influ-ence others. Take for example, Maria Harrington ’04, founder of the Teach English in Chiapas Project. Maria is just one of several recipients of the various scholarships Neil established. Thanks to Neil’s generous support, Maria and countless other HNU stu-dents had the opportunity to embrace the transformative Holy Names educa-tional experience.

“The service learning portion of my education gave me focus and a founda-tion,” said Maria of her time at HNU. The opportunity to mature within an academic community rich in the values of social justice empowered Maria to positively affect the lives of others. According to Maria, “I learned to be not only a member, but also an activist in the community.” For generations to come, Neil’s generosity will continue to be felt by the lives impacted by the contributions of students like Maria.

In 2008, the University bestowed upon Neil its highest community honor, the Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters, recognizing his contributions to the University. “Holy Names is blessed to have been the beneficiary of Neil’s wisdom and support. Through the power of philanthropy, Neil’s legacy lives on in the 21st century face of our campus community,” stated Dav Cvitkovic, Vice President for University Advancement.

The Impact of a Lifetime: Edwin Etienne Raphel October 22, 1919 – November 3, 2010 We recognize and remember Ed (Edwin) Etienne Raphel, HNU Trustee and former Regent, who passed way on November 3, 2010. A successful businessman, an hon-orable War World II veteran, and charitable community leader, Ed’s contributions helped to move forward the HNU mission for lifetimes to come. Ed was a devoted leader behind multiple university initiatives, including supporting the recently estab-lished Frieda Mary Nassif Endowment, the Valley Center for the Performance Arts campaign, the Science Facilities Reconstruction Project, and the campaign for the newly renovated Student Center in Brennan Hall. We are blessed to have benefited from Ed’s friendship. He is survived by Josephine, his wife of 63 years, and their four children.
