Holy I AM & Holy Are My Names

A Lesson by Ebony Williams

3rd Commandment

Let’s begin the 3rd Commandment.

The 3rd commandment can be found in your bible in the book of Exodus Ch. 20 verse 7.

It says: “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”

3rd CommandmentSo what does that mean?

The word vain in that 3rd commandment means having no real value. So how do you take the Lord’s name in vain? When you say the Lord’s name simply because you become upset, joking, or being playful. That is considered taking his name in vain. In other words you are using his name carelessly and loosely.

3rd CommandmentThe Lord does not want you to speak his name without having a real reason for using it.

For example, if you are on the phone with your friend and he or she tells you some exciting news, you could be tempted to yell out God’s name by saying, “Oh my God!” or “Good Lord!”

That would be an example of using God’s name in vain because you truly do not require him at that moment.

God Has a Lot of NamesDid you know that God has a lot of different names?Let’s take your names for example. When you were born your parents gave you at least two different names. Some of us may have more than two names, but we all have a last name. You usually have a first name, a middle name, and of course a last name. Some of us may even have a nickname, which is a short name or a pet name for your real name.

God Has a Lot of NamesIf your mom called you by your middle name, it is still you that she is referring to. If she chooses to call you by your nickname, it is also still you that she is referring too.Well, it works that way for God too.

God has lots of names! His names are many. The difference is, his names have different meanings. You will learn a few of his different names now!

God Has a Lot of Names

Here are few names for God: I AM, Jesus, Savior, Jehovah, Almighty, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Alpha and Omega, Lamb of God, and many more.

Each of these names have special meanings and that is what we are going to learn about.

God Has a Lot of NamesWhen God referred to himself as I Am in the bible, it was when Moses asked for his name. This is what it says: Exodus 3: 13-14 “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The god of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.”In those scriptures he gave Moses a name to tell the children of Israel who he was.

God Has a Lot of NamesLet’s take a brief look at some other names for God!What about the name Jesus? I’m very sure you’ve heard that name said before.Well, Jesus is also a name for God. In the bible, Jesus is used several times in place of the name God and it is clear that it is referring to the same person. For example, in the book of Genesis, it tells us that God created the heaven and the earth. It also says in John 1:3 that Jesus made all things! Hmmm, they must be the same person!

God Has a Lot of Names• Let’s do a few more!

• In John chapter 10, Jesus is speaking to a few of his disciples after revealing himself after his death. When one of the disciples realized that it was Jesus, he responded by saying “My LORD and my God.”

• So that proves to us that Jesus is also God and Lord

God Has a Lot of Names

Getting interesting right?

Let’s do another one!

What about Savior? Savior is also a name for God.

In Luke 1:47 it says: “And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.”

God Has a Lot of NamesLet’s take a look at the name Jehovah!

In Isaiah 12:2 it states: Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.

So his name is Jehovah too!

God Has a Lot of Names

God is also called the Spirit of Truth.

Let’s take a look at John 16:13, it states: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.

There’s another one! The Spirit of Truth is also God’s name!

Lets Review What We KnowGet it?

Let’s review.

God has more than one name, much like you have more than one name.

So far we have learned that we can refer to God as Jesus, I Am, Lord, Savior, Jehovah and Spirit of Truth

Lets Find More NamesLet’s see how many names you can find for God in this scripture. This is Hebrews 13: 20: “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.”I found four. How many did you find? They are: God of peace, Lord, Jesus, and Shepherd of the sheep. In that scripture were two additional names for God that we didn’t mention earlier!

TrinityWhat does the bible teach us about Trinity?

Have you heard this word before?

Trinity is referred to as three. Mostly three persons.

In the bible it tells us about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

It tells us that they are one. But, first let’s look at Deuteronomy 4. It tells us that The Lord our God is one Lord! So all these names we have been learning is all about one person. Remember how we said you may have more than one name, but are still the same person?

Now, lets look at 1John 5:7-8 It says: For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, Word and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Wrap Up!Let’s wrap by stating what we learned today!First we learned that the 3rd Commandment tells us not to take God’s name in vain.Vain in this sense, means to use loosely or carelessly. We learned that God has more than one name just like you and I.We discussed a few of God’s names. We talked about trinity and learned that the trinity was God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The End!
