Worship and Fine Arts Program
All children of the community, grades 2-7, are
invited into a continuation of the summer camp worship and arts experience during the school year.
Each Monday evening, children gather at 6:30 p.m. for a light supper and then work with Michael Burkhardt and friends until 8:00 p.m.
Monday night experiences include singing, ringing handbells, playing Orff instruments, and drumming in the African tradition.
One of the goals of the program is to equip participants who come from Holy Cross, from across the region and from a wide variety of faith communities. to share what they have learned in their own communities. Additionally, these young people develop relationships that carry beyond their time together in the program.
“Tuition” for the program asks each family to provide one supper per term (Fall and Spring).
Sisters and Brothers,
Pastor Ben recently received a “Facetime” request on his iPhone. Clicking the onscreen but-ton allowed him to have a face to face conversation with an old friend who is stationed in Okinawa. We do not know the amount of computing, satellites, and other technology that made that face to face conversation possible. Why is that? Well, the folks at Apple worked really hard to design a phone that is quite simple. It has one button - but behind that one but-ton are thousands of hours of labor. In fact it is said that our phones have more computing power than what NASA used to send us to the moon.
It is simple.
Pastor Dana recently heard an interview of Paulo Coelho, author of the bestselling book The Alchemist. The virtue of “elegance” came up. “Elegance,” he said, “is simplicity...one day I was in Japan and I saw a just totally empty house. And then they have a small detail like, a flower arrangement, or a painting. And the rest is empty. And I said [to my publisher]…What is this? And he said…“This is elegance… because here, there’s only one detail that you can pay attention. And, because of this, elegance is to get rid of all the superfluous things and focus on the most beautiful one.” In this case it was this flower ar-rangement. So, for me, when I looked at the mountains to the Alps here...[in Geneva]...that was the line. And I see this white snow and I said,…God could have created snow as a rainbow, you know, full of colors. But then this would be a disaster…Because the beauty of the snow is because it has only one color.
It is elegant.
Can Church be simple? Can Church be elegant?
Once a lawyer asked Jesus which commandment in the law was most important. Jesus responded by saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:34-40)
As we reflect on Jesus’ priorities, we discover this simple elegance, this elegant simplicity at the core of discipleship:
Love God + Love People + Serve
Simple does not necessarily mean easy. Elegant does not necessarily mean effortless. But such simple elegance offers us a helpful focus as we move forward together as disciples in mission. Such a focus will help us determine priorities as we develop plans for ministry and mission as well as the stewardship of our building. Such a focus can help you discern how to participate in our community of God’s people doing God’s work. How do I love God? How am I loving people? How am I serving as Jesus served? As your pastors, we ask you to keep these priorities in mind as you visit the Ministry Fair on September 14. Stay tuned for more as we move into the 2014-15 year together keeping the simple elegance of disci-pleship before us, loving God, loving people, and serving.

Godly Play is a highly respected approach toward faith for-mation for children. It lets children learn scripture and stories through creative play, inviting them to make a “journey of dis-covery for their personal theological meaning rather than mem-orizing concepts that others have discovered.”
Ironically, although surveys show that volunteers don’t have time for preparation and training, Godly Play and similar pro-grams are seeing success in churches that train their volunteers. According to responses, adult volunteers find Godly Play spir-itually enriching for themselves. Learning the stories and at-tending workshops helps them tap into their own spirituality
and into knowledge of biblical stories, sacraments and liturgical language that they may not have learned as children.
Godly Play also engages a variety of senses, which helps children experience God’s story not only visually and orally but through touch, movement and even smell. In today’s world of over-stimulation and overscheduling, both children and adults are eager for a chance to slow down, quiet themselves and absorb the wonder of God’s presence. Traditional approaches do not of-fer this type of faith-formation experience, which may explain why Godly Play is steadily gain-ing in popularity.
Our goal is to begin offering Godly Play at Holy Cross in January. This will require a communi-ty wide effort! Here are ways you can be involved:
Train to be a storyteller. Train to be a “door person.” Share your talents in wood working and crafts to help build and assemble the materials. Share monetary gifts to help fund scholarships for training and supplies. Offer “behind the scenes” support.
Save the weekend of November 8-10 for training. On Thursday evening November 7, we plan to have one of the trainers come to Holy Cross to offer an introduction to Godly Play. Jack Keck has already begun to learn a Godly Play story and shared it with our council and other leaders. Watch for more opportunities for you to simply experience a story.

One child, one mentor, one hour per week!
That's what it takes to help an at risk child! Holy Cross is entering its seventh year as a Kids Hope partner with Coolidge Elementary School. The impact our many mentors have had on the children has been huge. There are so many children who need us and we are hoping that more of our dedicated members will be able to help. A mentor is not a tutor! A mentor is a friend! If you have any time availa-ble during school hours and are willing to be a friend to one young child, we will provide training and we will support you throughout this journey. We are thrilled that so many of our present mentors are planning to return, and we
will support you as well. The research clearly shows that the longer a mentor works with the same child, the stronger the impact is. We are honored to be called by God, Pastor Dana and our Congregation Council to be co-directors of Kids Hope. Please consider volunteering for this meaningful ministry. 6.1.2 is a young adult faith formation program. Gathering around the din-ner table, in the Abbey and really all over, youth learn about God, them-selves and how to serve out of their gifts.

GPS, "ancient faith to navigate a modern world," is like an "on-ramp" to help you en-gage not only Christian faith for our time and place, but also to form meaningful relation-ships and discover where you fit in the mission and vision of Holy Cross. The first few weeks are structured around the questions you bring…about God, the Church, faith, the Bi-ble….anything you wonder about. The journey begins the first week in October. We will meet
on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 and are exploring opening up a Sunday af-ternoon option if there is sufficient interest.
