SKI NEWS December 2018
Officer Reports
President – Rick Beagle
I hope to see everyone, especially the new members, at the Christmas
party. Come eat, drink, and celebrate with your ski club.
‘Tis the Season to Be Jolly – Suzanne Nappi
I encourage all of you to join us at the jolliest event of the year. The
annual GSC Holiday Party is always a great time, with good friends,
good food, and a fun holiday raffle. It’s family friendly – bring the kids!
GSC will provide main dishes, and we ask that you bring something to
share, such as a side dish, appetizer or dessert. Beer, wine, coffee,
and soft drinks will be provided. There is a cash bar in the pub.
Plan to arrive at 6:30, purchase raffle tickets, and enjoy appetizers
and beverages while socializing. For the holiday raffle, you put one or
more tickets into a container next to each prize you want to win.
Dinner will be served at 7 PM, followed by a short business meeting.
Then we will have the holiday raffle. There will also be a 50/50 raffle,
which usually has a very nice payout. Remember to bring cash!

Merchandise
GSC has a new merchandise item. You asked for it, so here it is.
Your very own GSC luggage tag. And what a steal at $1.50 each.
You can get yours at the Christmas party. Get one for each piece
of luggage. For most of you, that is three pieces when you fly for
a ski trip. But you are in luck. If you have signed up for the Park
City or Steamboat trip, you will only need to purchase two tags to
complete your set. The club will be giving one free tag to those
signed up for either of those trips. Complete your collection on
December 11.
Foodbank
We worked smart this time, and it didn’t hurt that we were packaging dish detergent. No matter what you
package at the foodbank, food or not, they convert the weight to number of people served. Last time, we
packaged k-cups, which weigh nothing. This time, Flo Fiehn, Anna Marie and Tom Nemcheck, Judy Ripple,
Linda Slicker and I packaged dish detergent. No wonder we served 889 people this time. Dish detergent
weighs a bit more than k-cups, AND we walked away with clean hands. Afterwards, the group ate lunch at
the Akron Family Restaurant on 250 W. Market Street. If you have not had breakfast or lunch there, you
are missing out. Thanks to all who volunteered. We’ll plan another Foodbank day in a few months.

Goodyear Ski Club Euchre Party ~ by Bill Nappi
On November 3, fourteen members gathered at the Nappi residence for the annual GSC Euchre Party.
Everyone contributed a side dish, and the club provided an entree, beer, wine, and soft drinks.
After dining, we began play with twelve players and two spectators. While play continued, the spectators
socialized, watched college football, and ate munchies while circulating among the players. The play was
spirited, with each participant playing eleven rounds of eight hands.
After numerous loners – successful and not – some euchres and steady play, Mary Beth Grether captured
first place, Randy Grether second place, Vickie Pavell third place, and Flo Fiehn finished last for the
chocolate chip granola bar.
Thanks to Vickie Pavell for bringing “trump blocks” to help us remember which suit is trump.

Chili & Soup Cookoff
If I said it once, I'll say it again . . . GSC has the best cooks in Northeast Ohio! This year’s chili and soup
cookoff was yet another success. With a total of 11 entries (5 were chili and 6 were soup) it made it hard
to judge. We had a pretty good number of members attending, so the club held the business meeting
first. When the meeting wrapped up, the lids came off the crocks, and the judging began. Every entry had
its own unique taste. If you left there hungry, it was your own fault. Everyone finished up filling in their
ballots for their top three chilis and soups. The ballots were tallied – actually counted twice – and the
results were as follows:
Chili Winners: 1st Lonnie Landers, 2nd Jerry Stavarz, 3rd Kim Vorhies
Soup Winners: 1st Rita Tinker, 2nd Linda Slicker, 3rd Anna Marie Nemcheck
I want to thank everyone who entered the contest; the entries were all wonderful. I also want to thank
the members who brought the appetizers and desserts. Those were also very tasty. I want to thank the
members who helped set up and clean up that evening. I truly appreciate everyone's participation.
Thank you! Teresa Gifford

Rita Tinker’s Santa Sausage Soup
Serves 8-10
• 1 lb. sweet Italian sausage (DiRusso sweet sausage) with casings removed
• 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 6 cups chicken broth (48 oz. College Inn chicken broth)
• 2 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced
• 1 (8.8 oz.) package dried cheese filled tortellini (Gia Russo frozen)
• 4 cups fresh spinach leaves (I used 1 box frozen chopped spinach, thawed)
• 1 (15.5 oz.) can dark red kidney beans, drained
• ¼ teaspoon ground pepper
• 1 teaspoon dried basil
• Salt to taste
Cut sausage into ½ inch pieces. Sauté until cooked through. Transfer to large stock pot.
Sauté onions and garlic in same pan for 2 minutes; add to stock pot.
Add chicken broth and sliced carrots to stock pot. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Add tortellini and simmer 10 minutes more. (Do not overcook tortellini so it doesn’t fall apart).
Stir in spinach and kidney beans. Season with pepper, basil and salt.
Several people asked for the recipe for the dessert that Esther brought to the chili cookoff, so she is
sharing it. It is from a blog called Spend with Pennies. Here is the link in case you want to print the recipe
or browse the blog – https://www.spendwithpennies.com/pumpkin-pie-crunch/ . . .
Pumpkin Pie Crunch
Prep time: 10 mins; cook time: 50 mins
• 1 can (15.5 oz.) pack pumpkin
• 1 can (12 oz.) evaporated milk
• 3 large eggs
• ¾ cup sugar
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
• 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
• 1 cup pecans, chopped
• 1 package yellow cake mix
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 pan and set aside.
In a bowl, combine pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, salt and pumpkin pie spice. Pour into the pan.
Gently sprinkle the cake mix powder over the pumpkin mixture and top with pecans.
Drizzle melted butter over the cake mix and pecan layer.
Bake 25 minutes uncovered. Cover with foil and bake an additional 25 minutes.
Remove from oven and uncover (be careful; the steam will be hot).
Cool completely before cutting.

Goodyear Ski Club, Inc (GSC) Trip Agreement
All trip reservations require a signed application with payment. Make all checks payable to Goodyear Ski Club, Inc. No post-dated checks will be accepted for any GSC trip. Unless otherwise noted, all prices are “per person, double occupancy”.
ADDITIONAL CHARGES: Unforeseen costs from changes to air travel, ground travel, lift tickets or rooming will be passed on to trip participants. Any items not specifically mentioned as part of the trip, such as meals, phone calls, transportation to the point of trip departure, items of a personal nature, fees charged for airlines for checked baggage, etc. are the sole responsibility of the trip participant. GSC may incur additional fuel surcharges to the contracted transportation at any time before trip departure. It is the responsibility of the participant to pay any such increases.
ROOMING PREFERENCES: Due to the nature of our trips, the number of participants, the bedding configuration, and the accommodations secured for the trip participants, the GSC cannot guarantee that the requested rooming preference will be provided.
SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: Room rates are based upon double occupancy. If you are a single participant, without a roommate preference, every effort will be made to find you a roommate. If that is not possible, you will be required to pay any single supplement charges that may be imposed.
TRIPS OUT OF THE COUNTRY: You must have a current passport, which does not expire until 6 months after your return. If you have been convicted of a crime, including D.U.I., you may be refused entry into the subject country and should contact the country’s embassy or Consular General for the proper procedure or clearance. The GSC is not responsible for the denied entry.
RESPONSIBILITY: GSC is acting as the applicant’s agent and will not be liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, or any personal injury, or any other loss occurring or occasioned by applicant’s participation or lack of participation in a trip. GSC will not be responsible for any cost increase(s) due to increases in local, state, or federal taxes, fuel surcharges, baggage fees, etc. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
CANCELLATION OR CHANGES: GSC reserves the right to: (1) withdraw the trip; (2) refuse, at any time, to accept or retain any person as a trip participant; and/or (3) prior to departure, make changes in published itinerary, whenever, in its sole judgment, conditions warrant.
REFUNDS: Applicant will receive a full refund if GSC cancels a trip, except and unless such cancellation is necessitated or caused, either wholly or in part, by applicant’s cancellation or failure to make timely payment. 1) Where applicant cancels at any time and trip departs 100% filled, applicant may be entitled to a refund, less a $5 service fee on a one-day trip; a $15 service fee on a weekend trip; or a $25 service fee on a trip over three days. 2) Where applicant cancels and a trip departs less than 100% filled, applicant may be liable for the entire cost of applicant’s trip, including deposit, final payment and/or balance due. 3) Applicant shall be liable to GSC for any monies expended or paid by GSC over and above payments made by applicant to GSC.
NSF CHECK: For any check returned for insufficient funds, the participant will be assessed a $25 minimum return check fee, plus any daily penalties incurred by the GSC. The return of any check will be cause for cash payments to be made to the GSC Treasurer. If checks are returned for insufficient funds, the Treasurer shall notify the participant and allow him/her fourteen (14) days to cover the check. If funds have not been paid within the fourteen day period, the member may lose his/her position on any GSC trip or activity.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER: To protect the GSC’s non-profit status, each non-member is charged an Associate Membership fee based upon a non- refundable fee structure of: $5 for each one-day trip; $10 for each weekend trip; and $25 for any trip longer than three days. This fee allows an individual to participate on a current season ski trip. Within one month from the ending date of the respective trip, the Associate Membership fee may be applied toward a full membership. The fee does not entitle the Associate Member to receive the monthly newsletter or any other GSC benefits. The Associate Membership fee will be in effect only after a trip is opened to non-members.
RELEASE: In consideration of being permitted to participate in trip activities, by signing the application, I, as an individual hereby release the GSC, its officers and agents, from all liability for injury, death, damage or loss resulting from such participation. I understand the dangers inherent in trip activities and acknowledge that I have had an opportunity to make all necessary inquiries regarding the transportation and facilities involved. I release the GSC to use my likeness which may appear on their website to publicize their ski trips, which may appear in their photo albums or which may appear in other media used to publicize the GSC and its activities. I am gifting a portion of my trip fee (eligible reimbursement/# of trip participants) to the Trip Coordinator. I intend this release to be binding on my heirs and personal representatives. If I am the parent or legal guardian of a trip participant, I intend the above release to be applicable to the participant as well as to me.
