President’s Report – Warren Ripple
Judy and I experienced our first day of skiing on January 29 with
bright skies and finely groomed slopes at Sun Peaks, BC. That was
followed up with four more days of full sun and one day filled with
light powdery snow. The trip had true ski-in/ski-out, very few skiers,
and no lift lines. Kelly and Kim Rehm got to experience the very best
of western skiing on their first big western trip. Mary Beth did a
wonderful job running a great ski trip. Thank you, Mary Beth!
Judy and I were also on Teresa Gifford’s “Valentine” overnight trip to
Holiday Valley, along with 49 other skiers. The Sunday morning rain
eventually changed into snow around 4 PM Sunday afternoon and
continued up until the time we loaded up the bus on Monday. We had
a very nice time skiing at Holiday Valley. Thank you, Teresa for
running a great trip!
This year, we again experienced a very mild NE Ohio winter. The mild
winter has been very challenging for local ski resorts and the near NY
and PA ski resorts. It has gotten much harder for our club to pick
dates for day and weekend ski trips and to fill those trips. I
appreciate the efforts of Betty Wise to run a day trip under these
challenging conditions. Next ski season we will investigate joint day
and overnight trips with other clubs in an effort to improve upon the
number of ski trips we fill.
At this month’s business meeting, we will be accepting nominations
for new club officers to fill positions opening at our April election
meeting. The officer positions which will be open for nominations
are: Vice President, Treasurer, and Officer Delegate to CMSC. Please
consider running for an office and becoming more directly involved in
guiding your club’s activities.
There is still some winter left, so let’s all think snow!! - Warren

Ever thought about being a ski instructor at Boston Mills/Brandywine and Alpine Valley?
Peak Resorts Is Looking for Ski Instructors for 2017-2018!
BM/BW/AV has one of the largest Ski Schools in the nation with over 300 instructors on staff. With a large
demand for our service, we are looking for individuals that have a passion for teaching and helping others
and want to learn how to instruct people to be great skiers and snowboarders. We expect our instructors
here at Boston Mills/Brandywine and Alpine Valley to have a high level of passion and commitment. In
return, we provide onsite training to help you become a professional instructor along with the opportunity
to make money while having fun.
Being an instructor is a great way to meet like-minded people and spread the passion for skiing and
snowboarding that we all have. Apart from meeting great people, we also offer weekly clinics taught by
our education staff to help fine tune your own riding and teaching throughout the season as well.
Minimum Requirements to Be an Instructor:
Minimum age of 16 by December 1, 2017
Ski or Snowboard at an intermediate-advanced level
Passion for the sport and a willingness to educate others
Fall Training:
Fall training is mandatory for all instructors. The training fee is $50. New hires are required to attend
all training sessions.
The training is a total of 16 hours over four days covering the latest teaching standards as well as
group dynamics of teaching and many other techniques to improve your teaching and riding abilities.
Once you have completed all of your training requirements and have shown yourself to be
professional, you will be asked to commit to a set work schedule. To meet your requirements you must
sign up for 3 shifts in at least 2 days –totaling about 12 hours per week. We will try our best to honor
the schedule you request, but because the number of required instructors varies by day and shift, you
may have to agree to work other days/shifts in order to meet your minimum hour requirement. After
all of the schedules are set, the Ski School will then hire enough instructors to meet the projected
needs for the season.
So, how can you improve your chance of being hired?
1. Select a work schedule that matches the most in-demand times. Commit to more work hours than the
minimum (12), but don’t inflate your schedule.
2. Demonstrate your professionalism – make sure you have reliable transportation, be on time, be
prepared, and have your own equipment.
3. Demonstrate your teaching ability - be willing to present to a group and lead them through exercises
and to create a fun learning atmosphere.
4. Demonstrate good skiing or boarding skills on the snow. You do not have to be an expert to be an
instructor, but you need to demonstrate balance, basic turning skills and the ability to ski/ride in
control at all times.
* It may be days or weeks between completing fall training and when we open, dependent on weather.
You will need to watch the resort websites www.bmbw.com or www.alpinevalleyohio.com. Things will
move fast once we open, and you need to be ready to report for duty as soon as we open. (continued>)
3
Uniforms: Every instructor must wear an official instructor uniform while at the resort. Uniform jackets
can be rented for $25.00/season, collected at the last training session, and must be returned by the last
day of the season.
Shadowing: Every new hire will be required to shadow a seasoned instructor and be approved by
training staff prior to being able to teach. The number of shadows and requirements will be highlighted
during fall training.
If you have questions, please call the Ski School office (800-875-4241 x2010) and leave your contact
information or email at [email protected].
Thank you for your interest,

BOSTON MILLS BRANDYWINE SKI CLUB SOCIALS
George Csepegi reported that he, Jim Betz and four others represented GSC at the Boston Mills Ski Club
Social on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017. A lack of natural snow and warmer temps might have kept other
Goodyear, Stark and Lewis members at home, but Boston Mills had been making snow, so a day of
socializing and skiing commenced. If anyone attends A Night Out on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017 at
Brandywine, please send pictures and a recap to me at [email protected] as Warren and I will
be skiing in Breckenridge.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/CHARITY ACTIVITY
At the February Meeting, the club discussed volunteering with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and
decided to volunteer at the warehouse sorting food donations, preferably 1.5 to 2 hours on a Friday
morning. I will function as Volunteer Group Coordinator, complete the paperwork and coordinate a date in
later April or May. Information will be in the April Newsletter and you will need to contact me if you will be
participating. For those interested, we could go out for lunch afterwards.
The Foodbank offers several opportunities for organizations to wear their organization’s shirts, promote
their organization and support a good cause. We will evaluate after our shift and determine if this should
be an ongoing endeavor.

Sun Peaks, British Columbia ~ Mary Beth Grether
It was almost a perfect trip until the end when it became an adventure.
Fifteen of us embarked to Sun Peaks on Air Canada to Kelowna Airport in British
Columbia. Our bus driver from the airport to the resort was kind enough to make a
beer and food stop for us on our three hour plus shuttle ride. After everyone got
settled in, we met Nancy Greene (Olympic champion) and her husband Al Raine (her Olympic trainer) for
some drinks and learned all about the mountain. Since our last visit, they opened a school on the
mountain. Not a ski school, but regular education. Could you imagine having to put your skis on and take
a lift to get to school each morning, and then ski home? There are 60+ elementary students and 20+ high
schoolers. We saw a bunch of students out for phys-ed class with their snow shoes. Life is tough for them.
I organized a poker run where participants went to various locations to pick up
an envelope containing a playing card. You could collect eight in all. Some of the
vendors gave discounts to the club. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory was
a favorite with a discount on your purchase. No purchase was necessary, but I
think everyone took advantage of that discount. Other merchants included
Vertical Café (discount on a hot drink), the Lone Wolf Gallery & Willow Tree Gifts
(discount on purchase), Free Fall (discount on rentals or demo skis), and
Bottoms Bar & Grill. Cards were also available at the welcome party, mountain
tour and the final showdown. We opened the first three cards at the midweek party just to see the start of
everyone’s hand. Judy got the first ace, then Scott had a pair of jacks, but Suzanne topped round one with
a pair of queens. There were several others with possible straights or flushes. The midweek party was
held in the Cahilty meeting room with plenty of appetizers – enough that no one went out to eat. We were
able to BYOB to the room, which was more cost effective for every one while we had three tables of
Euchre playing. We also had Euchre playing in the lobby several nights, but we had to make sure Betty
and Les Wise were not partners. But they kept each other honest. We tried Euchre on the bus going out,
but the roads were too curvy. We got in three hands before motion sickness was kicking in.

I’d better mention some of the skiing. Sunday–sunny but cold; Monday–sunny but cold; Tuesday–sunny
but even colder; Wednesday and Thursday–sunny and cold: Five straight days of sun. Duh, Sun Peaks!
Taking advantage of the sun, most everyone skied Monday thru Thursday and took Friday off. Ripples,
Kim and Kelly Rehm, and Grethers skied Friday in the only snow day. After coming out of lunch with
Warren and Judy, there were three inches of fresh snow. It was like skiing on a cloud. It proceeded to
snow another four inches, which caused havoc on our trip home. (More on that later.) Randy and I skied
at least a run with everyone except the Wertzes. We did see them ski down to the bottom on our day off,
so I know they were out there.
It was the first trip of the year, but perhaps next year we should publish in the January 2018 newsletter
the correct order of getting ready to ski. Put your ski pants on before your boots, Kelly! When do you put
on your leg brace, Linda? And when do shin protectors go on? Buckle your helmets, Warren and Suzanne!
Warren and I got separated from Judy, Linda, Esther, Randy and Rick. Per Judy, we missed the mogul run.
Randy said, “What mogul run?” (Dirty look from Judy) There were other opportunities for mogul runs that
MB got on video tape. Great
job, Judy! Several days we
made it to the Morrisey side
where many runs were
around wide open trees, but
you did not get the sun. Judy
and Warren Ripple, Rick
Beagle, Esther Detray, Linda
Slicker, Randy and I made it
to the west bowl for several
runs. As a Christian, I am
not supposed to use the
word hate, but I hate t-bars.
We did it twice and then left
the west bowl.

Betty Les Suzanne & Esther
Other than sore muscles, there were no injuries (that people would admit). The indoor or outdoor hot tubs
took care of the sore muscles. At the hot tub, it was a real melting pot where we met other skiers from
New Zealand, Australia, UK and Quebec.
With the good exchange rate of 1.3 US to every 1.0 Canadian dollar, we were able to stretch the midweek
party allowance to include appetizers supplied by the club on Thursday while we wrapped up our poker
playing. After everyone opened the balance of their eight cards, Betty and Judy ended up with flushes,
and Scott had a full house (jacks over fives) but Esther just squeaked him out with a full house of kings
over fives. There was a small cash prize for Esther and chocolates shaped like hearts, diamonds, clubs and
spades for all. Again there were enough appetizers that I don’t think anyone went out to eat.

We stayed at the Cahilty Hotel and Suites, where breakfast was supplied every day as part of our
package. They even made a to-go breakfast since we left at 2:30 AM on Saturday. Yes, I said 2:30 AM,
and it was good we left then. A truck took out a powerline and shut down the road for hours. We were
only stuck for 75 minutes, but that was still too long for some (male & female) who found the restroom
hole behind the shuttle bus. Luckily, it was still dark at 4:15 AM, and no one pulled behind us for about 30
minutes. Too bad my camera was not handy then. We eventually made it to the airport on time thanks to
our driver. He was passing semis and cars like there was no snow on the ground. I closed my eyes and
said Hail Mary after Hail Mary. The flight out of Kelowna was delayed, so we did not make our connection
to Toronto. We eventually made it there at 1:30 AM, and most of us slept on the airport floor or played
cards until our 7:45 AM flight. We eventually made it to Cleveland after 9 AM, and all our luggage arrived
too.
It is hard to beat five days of sun, breakfast every morning, two meals paid by the club, and NOBODY
getting hurt. I call that a successful trip with a hiccup at the end.
