President’s Report – Warren Ripple
Our April business meeting was lightly attended, but we met the
requirements of the club’s constitution by having a quorum (10% of
members) present for the election of officers. Tom Nemcheck and
Greg Dyer were re-elected and will serve terms as vice president and
treasurer, respectively. Thank you very much, Tom and Greg! I
appreciate your continued support of the club.
The position of CMSC delegate remains open; we may review the
necessity of the position during our review of the constitution later
this year. We will also be considering changes to the constitution and
policies, including club dues, associate club membership fees (fees
charged to non-members for participation on GSC ski trips), the fee
for printed and mailed copies of the newsletter, and officer
responsibilities. Currently, I have five volunteers for the Constitution
Committee. The club constitution requires 5-10 committee members,
so if you would like to participate, please let me know. We are
looking to meet in June or July, as best matches people’s schedules.
Spring is here, and maybe summer isn’t too far behind. Most people
would prefer to be outside and not inside attending a meeting, so we
will again take a break from monthly business meetings following the
business meeting on May 9 at New Era Restaurant. There will be no
business meetings in June, July or August. Business meetings will
then restart in September. There are several events scheduled for
this summer listed in the newsletter. Each monthly newsletter also
has an upcoming events calendar for your quick reference. It’s still
too early to have any ski trips decided for next season, but look to
your summer newsletters for that information, as well.
Trip Officer’s Report – Jim Kovach
Our ski season is over. Cancelled trips complicated the club’s efforts
to provide our members with some ski adventures. The Holiday
Valley Inn trip proved to be one of the highlights, and the recently
completed Crested Butte trip provided a bright note on this
somewhat “iffy” season.
For 2018, we are working on our week trips NOW! We hope to have
our choices for western trips narrowed to 3 or 4 by early May and our
picks ready by June 1. We’re still looking at the possibility of having
an eastern trip in the mix, too.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/CHARITY ACTIVITY
At the February meeting, the club discussed volunteering with the Akron-Canton
Regional Foodbank and decided to volunteer at the warehouse sorting food
donations for 2 hours on a Friday morning. The Foodbank offers several
opportunities for organizations to wear their organization shirts, promote their
organization and support a good cause. We will evaluate after our shift and
determine if this should be an ongoing endeavor. I already have five volunteers
from the May meeting, but more would be welcome. Please call or text me at
330-323-7092 if you are interested in participating; either follow the instructions
below, or I can email you the link. We will go out for lunch afterwards.
INSTRUCTIONS RECEIVED FROM AKRON-CANTON REGIONAL FOODBANK
Goodyear Ski Club is scheduled to work at the Foodbank on Friday, June 16 at 10 AM to 12 PM.
If you have not volunteered here before, you will first need to complete a Volunteer Application.
Adult Volunteer Application / Youth Volunteer Application (ages 10-15 working with an adult)
Please sign-up to participate:
Log in to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank website Volunteer Information Center and navigate
to your scheduled day on the calendar. You will sign up for Volunteer Group: Goodyear Ski Club.
Welcome to the Foodbank: The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is located at the corner of Dart
Ave and Opportunity Pkwy off of OH-59 near downtown Akron. Our address is 350 Opportunity Pkwy,
Akron, OH 44307. When you arrive, please use our visitor parking, either in front of the building or in
the Dart Avenue lot. You may use the main entrance or the side, visitor entrance.
What to wear: Safety is our priority! Please note that open-toed shoes and jewelry are not permitted
in our warehouse when handling food. Comfortable shoes are recommended as you may be on your
feet the entire time. Lockers are available for your personal belongings.
Your volunteer project: Volunteer projects are based on the daily needs of the Foodbank. The time
you give sorting and inspecting food donations, labeling product for repackaging, or packaging bulk
items help us provide 84,000 meals to people struggling with hunger in our community, each and
every day!

Cleveland Metro Ski Council News ~ Suzanne Nappi
This will be my last CMSC news article as GSC’s delegate to CMSC. I am stepping down from my position
having completed the two-year term of 2015-2017. (I previously served from 2010 to 2013.) There have
been challenges in recent years as CMSC has lost one member club—Esprit—and the remaining clubs have
suffered declining membership. Still, the CMSC ski trips are very popular, and the race program remains
strong. A rollout of the new website will be announced very soon. CMSC is celebrating its 50th anniversary
this year with a big bash on November 4. Information about the party is listed on page 3.
Four officers and one new trustee were elected at the CMSC meeting on April 6, 2017.
President: Greg Schmid Trustee 2017–2020: Cynthia Daniels
Vice President: Krista Petrolla Trustee 2016–2019: Peter Keefe
Secretary: Keri Cavanaugh Trustee 2015–2018: Anne Houdek
Treasurer: Jason Popik Past President: Justin Forbes
We’ll meet at 5:30 PM at Papa Joe’s Restaurant, located at 1561 Akron Peninsula Rd. After dinner, we’ll
head over to the Weathervane Playhouse to enjoy the musical comedy Hairspray. Dinner not included.
Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is piled bouffant-high with laughter,
romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy
Turnblad, has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes
true, Tracy must use her new star power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of
heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV show...all without denting her 'do!

Crested Butte – Jim Kovach
Beginning with some early cancellations for
injury, and continuing with a “week before”
injury and a “day before” injury, our full
complement of 32 participants became 28
actual Crested Butte travelers. Once the
bedding arrangements were sorted out
(much to the glee of our single male
trippers), we finalized all arrangements and
headed to Cleveland. Some spent the night
at the Sheraton Airport Inn to get an early
start without an early drive. We all met at
the American Airlines check-in and had a
smooth experience with AA and with TSA.
Our flights to Dallas/Ft. Worth and on to
Gunnison were uneventful and relatively
pleasant. Alpine Express promptly loaded
us up on their large bus to make a short (?) grocery and adult beverage stop and a speedy 45 minute ride
up to Mt. Crested Butte. Check in at the Plaza was quick for all but Mary Beth & Randy and Jason &
Rachel. Their condo wasn’t ready yet. Someone missed that one on the list. Shortly after our arrival, we
headed to our welcome party at Trackers. Bland chips and even blander salsa were complemented by a
free cocktail on Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Lift tickets were distributed and dinner plans perfected.
Most were anxious to get prepped for Sunday’s day of skiing.
Beautiful blue skies greeted us
for all but one of our days at
CB. That day, we had lots of
fresh snow, gloomy skies, and
some heavy tracking. Through
the week, everyone seemed to
find enough steeps, groomers,
cruisers, and challengers to
keep them going. Consensus
was that this was a good ski
venue choice. Only seven of
our group had ever been there
before. We love presenting
new experiences!
There was only one serious
incident for our group. Randy
got taken out near the Silver
Queen lift line by a reckless
young lady who flew out of
nowhere to blind-side him. Ski Patrol, on-mountain clinic, and Gunnison Hospital all got involved to check
out a possible concussion. MB and Randy had the pleasure of an overnight stay at Gunnison Hospital, but
tests were negative, and Randy made it back, taking the next day off to rest. He was back on the slopes
the following day and SEEMED OK. He can tell the rest of the details. Kim Price tweaked a knee, but
managed to ride a snowmobile and get back on the slopes later in the week.
8
Downtown Crested Butte offered
quite an array of dining
experiences. I don’t think anyone
had a hard time finding suitable
sustenance. Libations were
plentiful also. A few of us took
some time to tour the Romp Skis
factory in downtown CB, and
another few toured the Montanya
rum distillery. Hmm!
9
Departure day went smoothly.
Alpine Express was right on time,
and American Airlines had plenty
of staff on hand to check us in
quickly. TSA got a couple of
opportunities to test the new
“groping” techniques now
mandated. I was one of those
massaged persons.
Flights back were on time. All
luggage and skis arrived home
with their owners and we all
made it back to our domiciles
sometime after midnight, early
Sunday morning. Thanks to all
who traveled with us on this trip. We had some new members and some Western PA Ski Council members
join us, and we thank them for their company. I hope everyone had a great time. — Jim

Volunteer Dinner April 2017
Goodyear Ski Club honored its volunteer workers with a steak dinner held at Frank’s Place on Market in
the Highland Square neighborhood of Akron. Proprietor Frank Horvath, a GSC member, and his staff took
very good care of us. Both the food and service were excellent. Thanks to Rita for the yummy brownies!
