SKI NEWS June 2020

Officer Reports

Vice President – Randy Grether

Summer is officially here, so we are not meeting in June or July. If you

would like to have a bike ride, hike or a trip down the Cuyahoga River,

let me know, and we will try and let everyone know. I know social

distancing is required, but we can work with it and still have fun. The

annual GSC Picnic is still on for August 2 until the park says otherwise.

We may change the way food is served and how we socialize.

The GSC Golf Scramble needs players, so get your application in to me

ASAP. This event is always a good time.

Due to 6-foot distancing and other protocols, restaurants have limited

seating. We would not have a private room at Butcher & Sprout;

therefore, we are not planning a June business meeting. Read all the

great news in this newsletter.

Trip Chair – Mary Beth Grether

Both trips are released in this newsletter, so if you are a paid member

in good standing, you have the first three weeks to sign up before we

open it up to others. Remember that last year the Big Sky trip filled up

within those three weeks, so don’t hesitate this year.

We have not been to Telluride for a long time, somewhere around 14

years. I remember because I broke my leg there. But don’t let that

scare you from going. We are right at the base of the mountain. Ski-in

with a short walk to the lift. We are close to town. You can walk, but if

you have skied hard you can catch a free shuttle to town. Teresa

Gifford is your trip leader, and we are trying online registration for

Telluride. So, all checks will go to Sports America. You can even pay

with a credit card, although you will be charged a service fee.

However, some credit cards offer trip insurance, so the service charge

may be worth it. Check with your credit card provider. You can pay the

first or all installments via credit card, or a combination of credit card

and check, or all by check. You can apply for trip insurance via the

online registration any time before your final payment.

Our second trip is to Breckenridge, and this will be run like many of

our trips in the past. Your checks will be written out to the Goodyear

Ski Club and sent to your trip leader, who is yet to be determined. See

the flyers in the newsletter for all the details. (continued next page)

I mentioned travel insurance. You can get that through your tour

operator or externally, but I do suggest getting travel insurance

based on the current conditions we are living under. A recent TV

recommendation used the term “CFAR”, cancel for any reason. So,

read your contract carefully when making your decision.

Although the current pandemic has limited meeting face-to-face at

the Mountain Travel Symposium, I am still participating in the virtual

version. I have been President, Secretary, Treasurer, Marketing and

Ski Queen, but this is my first time as Officer in Charge of Trips. I

am disappointed in not meeting face-to-face with many of our ski

contacts, but I made the best of the online meetings the last week in

May. We already have our 2021 trips planned, so I used this

opportunity to build on our 2022 trips. Do you have any ski resort

you want to visit or revisit?

I am missing everyone, but perhaps we can still get in a brewery,

winery, or bike ride this summer. – Mary Beth Grether

Fred Zofchak (1938 – 2020)

I got to know Fred on a GSC ski trip to Lake Tahoe in 2004.

His wife, Judy, and daughter, Kristi, also went on that trip.

I was rooming with Kristi, so I spent a lot of time with the

family. Fred and Kristi were both strong skiers, and being a

ski instructor, Fred tried his best to bring me up to speed.

We rented vehicles on that trip since we had flown into

Sacramento and had to drive to Lake Tahoe. Of course, being

a typical dad, Fred insisted on doing all the driving. We gave

him a hard time, but I was secretly glad when I saw those

hairpin turns on the two-lane road over the Sierra Nevada.

On the day we skied at Northstar, it started snowing after

lunch, so Fred decided we had to leave by 3 PM. I was not

very happy about that, but I didn’t argue. Boy was he right!

Driving back along the western end of the lake was like being

on a snowy, slippery roller coaster. Later we heard that the

storm got so bad that the road was closed soon after we left.

Father knows best!

Suzanne Nappi

First met Fred as roommates on a

Goodyear Ski Trip to Whitefish Ski

Resort in 2008 and became close

friends since. We enjoyed biking

together with the Akron Bike Club

in the summers. He and wife Judy

enjoyed coming to see me drum in

theater musicals with The Hudson

Players. We kept contact by phone

and mail in his later years as his

cancer eventually became more

severe.

Scrapbook Digitization Project – Mary Beth Grether

The digitizing of the photo albums is going slow at this time of social distancing. The 70s are complete,

and a slideshow created. The 80s are about 90% complete. The 90s scrapbooks are the big heavy ones.

I did say scrapbookS. Everyone must have had a camera in the 90s to fill two scrapbooks. Here are some

highlights from the 70s.

Goodyear Ski Club in the Seventies

The first scrapbooks were begun in the 70s. And we actually have some ancient members still in the Club.

See if you recognize them in the photos. There is good and bad about looking at older photos. Technology

is much better now. Pictures were blurry in the past, or that could be the result of the “liquid

refreshments” everyone consumed. Everyone looked much younger then. And prices were much cheaper.

For example, we took a group to Lake Tahoe this past March just before everything shut down. It was only

five nights, and it cost us $1345. In the words of Cher, “If I Could Turn Back Time” to the early 1970s

when a 7-night trip to Lake Tahoe cost $330.

I am digitizing the early photo albums. So, this month

I am featuring some photos from the 70s. Back then if

you worked at Goodyear it cost you $8 to join and $3

to renew. If you were married and worked at

Goodyear it cost $15 to join and $5 to renew. Non-

Goodyear employees paid a little more. That was also

back when Goodyear managed the finance, taxes,

professional photography, etc. and the top officers had

to be Goodyear employees.

The first long trip listed was to Courchevel, France in

1970; however, I don’t think GSC ran the trip. Per the

scrapbook, the first weeklong trip run by GSC was to

Killington in February 1975. See the photos of our

officers in 1974. I recognize three of them.

Courcheval, France – 1970

We did joint activities with BITOA and MOFO like Spring Boogie. If you know what those acronyms stand

for . . . you are old. The Club hosted Local Ski Night at Boston Mills where you could ski, get a lesson, and

often free food and drink. I saw a flyer for Boston Mills, and the cost for a lift ticket was $5 but $6.50 on

Saturdays. Ladies got $1 off on Thursdays.

We see Kenny Neff, George Csepegi, and Jerry and Linda Solnick volunteering way back then. The Club

had many activities like Scotch Doubles Bowling for $10 a couple, a New Members Party with John

Lannigan as MC, Pinball Tournaments and Casino Nights were common. A fun day at Cedar Point cost $10

for the bus transportation and entry into the park. Then there was the cultural side where they went to

see Barry Manilow and Linda Ronstadt. We have since replaced those fine performers with our own Rock-

the-Lock and Weathervane plays.

On the water, the Club liked rafting and Swim & Swing Parties, but mostly they enjoyed Houseboat Trips

to Lake Cumberland. For $115 you got transportation, food, and five days of drunkenness.

More officers . . . I recognize four of them now, and I did not join the club until the 80s. And I recognize

this ski queen. Not sure when CMSC started the event, but Linda Solnick represented us well in 1976.

The photo albums have the history of officers, ski queens, trips, and events. It is a shame they weigh so

much and take up a closet. So that is why we are digitizing them. The plan was to distribute the photos at

the Free Picnic, but we may have to postpone that. We are hoping to still have the picnic, but I don’t think

we want to have people gather around a scrapbook. The sanitizer would destroy the photos. I almost

forgot . . . the Browns ticket, bus, and beverages cost $15 in 1977. I think the beers alone now at the

stadium are $15.

Unless otherwise noted, all prices are “per person, double occupancy”. All trip reservations require a signed application with payment.

FUEL SURCHARGES: The GSC may incur additional fuel surcharges to the contracted transportation at any time before trip departure. It is the responsibility of the participant to pay any such increases. Participants having any questions regarding this policy should contact their trip leader.

ROOMING PREFERENCES: Due to the nature of our trips, the number of participants, the bedding configuration, and the accommodations secured for the trip participants, the GSC cannot guarantee that the requested rooming preference will be provided.

SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: Room rates are based upon double occupancy. If you are a single participant, without a roommate preference, every effort will be made to find you a roommate. If that is not possible, you will be required to pay any single supplement charges that may be imposed.

RESPONSIBILITY: GSC is acting as the applicant’s agent and will not be liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, or any personal injury, or any other loss occurring or occasioned by applicant’s participation or lack of participation in a trip. REFUNDS: Applicant will receive a full refund if the GSC cancels a trip, except and unless such cancellation is necessitated or caused, either wholly or in part, by applicant’s cancellation or failure to make timely payment. 1) Where applicant cancels at any time and trip departs 100% filled, the applicant may be entitled to a refund, less a $5 service charge on any one day trip; a $15 service charge on any weekend trip; or a $25 service charge on any trip over three days. 2) Where applicant cancels and a trip departs less than 100% filled, the applicant may be liable for the entire cost of the applicant’s trip, including deposit, final payment and/or balance due. 3) Applicant shall be liable to the GSC for any monies expended or paid by GSC over and above payments made by the applicant to the GSC.

The return of any check will be cause for cash payments to be made to the GSC Treasurer. If checks are returned for insufficient funds, the Treasurer shall notify the participant and allow him/her fourteen (14) days to cover the check. If funds have not been paid within the fourteen day period, the member may lose his/her position on any GSC trip or activity.

TRIPS OUT OF THE COUNTRY: You must have a current passport, which does not expire until 6 months after your return. If you have been convicted of a crime, including D.U.I., you may be refused entry into the subject country and should contact the country’s embassy or Consular General for the proper procedure or clearance. The GSC is not responsible for the denied entry.

This fee allows an individual to participate on a current season ski trip. Within one month from the ending date of the respective trip, the Associate Membership fee may be applied toward a full membership. The fee does not entitle the Associate Member to receive the monthly newsletter or any other GSC benefits. The Associate Membership fee will be in effect only after a trip is opened to non-members.

I release the GSC to use my likeness which may appear on their website to publicize their ski trips, which may appear in their photo albums or which may appear in other media used to publicize the GSC and its activities. I am gifting a portion of my trip fee (eligible reimbursement/# of trip participants) to the Trip Coordinator. I intend this release to be binding on my heirs and personal representatives.
