Even if you don’t drink alcohol, getting together with friends for happy hour can be a real diet-wrecker if you’re not careful.

It’s the perfect storm of inexpensive drinks and plenty of finger food – which is often free – and the possibility that you’ll linger over both for an hour or more. As you relax and get to talking, it’s easy to lose track of how many calories you’re taking in. So here are some tips to help you stay happy during happy hour:

1. The snacks you’re offered at happy hour tend to be greasy and salty – bad news for your diet. Most of the time, you’re facing chips, peanuts, pretzels – or hot foods like chicken wings, fried cheese sticks or nachos. Unless you know that you’ll be able to get something light – like some raw veggies and hummus dip – your’re best bet is to have a snack before you head over to happy hour and steer clear of the snacks altogether. Have a high protein snack late in the afternoon to tide you over until dinner – some Greek style yoghurt, a few slices of turkey with some whole grain crackers, or a bit of cottage cheese and fruit should do it.

2. If you can’t resist the snacks, don’t sit down with the bowl of peanuts or hot wings in front of you. Instead, ask your server for a small plate and portion out a few items for yourself. When your plate is empty, you’re done!

3. If you are planning to drink alcohol, your lowest calorie choices are beer and wine. A bottle of light beer or glass of wine has around 100 calories – far and away a better choice than mixed drinks. Hard alcohol has over 100 calories per shot – and the mixers can drive the calories sky high. Adding cream, fruit juices, syrups and sodas can take the calories in your mixed drink to well over 300.

4. Keep in mind that alcohol can increase your appetite, and it might also loosen up your determination to stay away from the snacks. So if you decide to have an alcoholic beverage, limit yourself to one drink, then switch to something calorie-free - like some sparkling water or diet soda with a twist instead.

5. Finally, maintain your focus on spending some quality time with your friends. Being sociable doesn’t require that you have a drink in your hand or a pile full of snacks on your plate.

Success in any endeavour takes effort, but in Herbalife, with the right attitude and some know-how, it is eminently possible. “Herbalife has a support system and a coach that trains and educates both new and existing Distributors,” notes Mohd. Saiful Bin Abdul Rashid. The strong support from the company paves the way for the team to work successfully.

Rahimah Binti Sulaiman & Mohd. Saiful Bin Abdul Rashid have experienced running their own business before coming to Herbalife. They employed over 500 employees running cleaning contracts for hypermarkets and high-rise buildings. The business was labour intensive, and without support from anyone. Moreover, they had to be content with late payments and the stresses of dealing with a large workforce. Their past business was not glamorous at all, but it left them with the wisdom and desire to get serious in Herbalife.

“We started off as customers of Herbalife products and our personal results attracted a lot of interest” remembers Rahimah Binti Sulaiman.

The real attraction to Herbalife, after the success of the products, was the vision. They fell in love with Mark Hughes' vision of Herbalife – Changing People's Lives. Interested in taking things further, the couple invited people who eventually became business partners. From there, they created their own training centre, and now they are 20K Executive President's Team Members!

Herbalife has been a success for the whole family. They have more quality time together, as they are able to bring their children along whenever they travel. The business has even grown to be a part of the family. “It's so much easier to get our children to do Herbalife business as compared to a conventional business” said Rahimah Binti Sulaiman & Mohd Saiful Bin Abdul Rashid. Their first two children have decided to pursue Herbalife after graduating from university, and the third child who is currently taking a major in nutrition had chosen to study locally in order to do Herbalife business alongside her studies.

Success in Herbalife is accompanied by a greater sense of responsibility the couple shared. “We know we have a greater responsibility not only to our group but to Herbalife Malaysia as a whole” says Rahimah Binti Sulaiman “Herbalife has changed our lives and we believe that we can help a lot more people to change their lives, too. We want to see hundreds of Malaysians on international stage being recognised as Presidents' Team members in the near future.”
