Ethical Considerations Assistive products should enhance and enable independence In some circumstances they may however produce less positive outcomes for example if they are used as a substitute for human contact or used to restrict rather than enhance the personrsquos freedom of movement Some people might even find that the very presence of the product reminds them about their memory problems which may cause distress It is important to consider these issues when buying a product and if you are buying a product on another personrsquos behalf that they are involved as much as possible For some products such as GPS devices it is vital that the person consents to wearing these devices if they have the mental capacity to do so
