Welcome to your brand new Alzheimer’s Society Daily living aids catalogue for 2016/17. Inside you’ll find a great selection of products to help with everyday life for people living withdementia and their carers.
Throughout the year we have been taking our products to Alzheimer’s Society meeting groups and review panels to ask people living with dementia and their carers to try them out and tell us what they think. This has helped us to decide which products to feature. You can see some of this feedback in the catalogue.
We provide tips and advice throughout the catalogue, but if you need extra information visit our online shop at alzheimers.org.uk/shop or call our team on the freephone number 0300 124 0900.
We know from people living with dementia and their carers that it is very important to consider the needs of each individual. We always recommend speaking to a healthcare professional before buying products, to make sure they’re suitable for you.
Every purchase you make helps fund Alzheimer’s Society’s work, supporting people living with dementia and their families, and getting one step closer to a cure.
Thanks for your support – and happy shopping!’Jon WingraveAlzheimer’s Society Commercial and Trading Manager

These products should be regarded purely as an aid to memory. Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Trading Ltd cannot be held responsible if you forget to take your medication, take the wrong medication, take the wrong amount of medication, take your medication at the wrong time or any combination of these events. Neither can we be held responsible if access to medication is gained by use of force or misuse.

Medication management
Advance automatic pill dispenser
At the pre-programmed times, the dispenser rotates, the alarm signal is heard, and the correct dosage comes into view through the opening in the lid.
Eight tablet compartments and up to eight daily alarms at whatever times you require. The red LED on lid flashes as the alarm buzzes and continues to flash until the case is opened.
Super eight daily medication reminder
Always speak to a healthcare professional before buying products to check that they are suitable for you. Important points to consider when purchasing medication management products.
Recognition: The person with dementia will need to recognise the alarm and know what to do when it sounds.
Learning: The person with dementia may need to be able to learn new routines in order to operate a pill dispenser.
Filling the dispenser: The dispenser will need to be kept topped up. This may be something the carer needs to do.
Battery life: Someone will need to take responsibility for changing the batteries when the red light on the dispenser indicates it is time to do so.
Clock changes: The device may need to be re-programmed at seasonal time changes.
Familiarity:The user may not always remember that an alarm has gone off or that medication has been taken. This could cause stress to the person with dementia. It may be necessary for a carer to be on hand to check and reassure the user, particularly whilst they are getting used to the product. However, once the medication is taken, the user will not be able to mistakenly repeat the dosage as the box is then locked until time for the next medication.
Monitoring: Carers should be aware that although medication is missing from a pill dispenser, it does not necessarily mean it has been taken. Carers should also check for any signs of forced entry.
Medication type: Some pills and tablets need to be kept in their foil or plastic containers and cannot be put into a pill dispenser. Other medication might need to be stored at a specific temperature or dispensed in a certain way, again, meaning it’s not suitable for a dispenser. We advise speaking to your pharmacist to check that your medication can be used with a medication management product.
Time limit: As dementia progresses, users might not react to products in the same way they used to. Please be aware of any changes from the user’s side.
Instructions: For your own safety we strongly recommend you read all instructions provided carefully before using any products.

Important information
For your own safety we strongly recommend you read all instructions provided carefully before using any products.
Please read the following information carefully before making a purchase.
Choosing the right productPeople react differently to different products. For example, one person might find it helpful to have a recorded message that plays when they open the front door, reminding them to take their keys, while another person might find this confusing. Some people may also be wary of trying new things or find it difficult to learn new skills. Choosing the right product is therefore not always an easy task. The products you purchase should suit the individual and their situation.
Professional adviceThe information in the catalogue and on our website should not be considered medical guidance or professional advice. Before buying products it is advisable to contact an occupational therapist or GP, or the local authority social services department. Your local social services department may be able to supply you with some of the products we sell, so check with your local office to see whether they can. Even if they can’t provide the products, the person with dementia may be eligible for a proper assessment, help in finding the best product or financial assistance.
Helpful tips• Aim to find solutions that can be integrated into a normal routine with minimum disruption.• If buying products for someone else, involve the person with dementia in decisions about which product or solution to use, and take their opinions on board.• There is a higher chance of success if you can introduce assistive products when dementia is still at an early stage, to gradually get used to a new way of doing things.
Ethical considerationsAssistive products should enhance and enable independence but they do have the potential to produce less positive outcomes. For example, if a product is misused it may replace human contact with the person with dementia, or restrict rather than enhance their freedom of movement. Some people might even find that the very presence of the product reminds them about their memory problems, which can cause distress.
Deciding togetherImportantly, no one should be forced into using a product if it is not right for them. The person with dementia must be involved in the decision making and their consent sought and given, where possible. Where it is not possible to obtain consent, it is vital that those making the decisions do so in the person’s best interests. The Mental Capacity Act (2005) provides a legal framework to support decision-making in cases where a person does not have the capacity to make their own informed decisions.
Information on assistive technology You will find lots of helpful factsheets on our website, including fact sheets on the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and assistive technology, visit alzheimers.org.uk/factsheets
