2nd Sunday of Advent “And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…” (PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10) Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God.

MASS INTENTIONS & CALENDAR FOR WEEK OF DEC. 9TH - DEC. 15TH

(Special Intentions)

We don’t say prayers

A friend of mine shared with me his first thanksgiving dinner away from family. He was a bit apprehensive and nervous sensing that it was going to be a different type of holiday. He had a bit of the blues feeling the pang of being homesick. He missed his brothers and sisters and extended family. There would be no football game today but at least they would watch the Macy Day parade. None the less he counted his blessings that he would not be alone but spending it with a family. On the other hand he was curious to see how other households celebrate this wonderful holiday. He arrived a little before dinner and relaxed with his new found company. So far so good he thought. He was getting hungry but he reminded himself not to grab all the white meat. Finally the long awaited announcement, “Dinner is ready”.

“Come on grandma lets go eat”, shouted one of the grandchildren.

They gathered around the table, all eyes on the 17 pound butterball turkey. Fork and knife in hand ready on moment’s notice to begin their siege someone, not sure who, offered a request, “Let’s say prayers.”

Without hesitation grandma the matriarch of the family spoke up with her voice of authority,

“We don’t say prayers here, just eat.”

With that everyone dug in as my friend sat momentarily bewildered. Grandma? What she have against prayers? Isn’t it sort of against what the day is all about? Oh well he thought better snap out of it or there would be nothing left but string beans.

I hope you remembered to say grace and hope it is not a once a year thing. Saying grace before meals recognizes the goodness of God and his blessing to us. It is a small thing, taking at most a minute or two but it puts the meal in perspective. Many of you these next few weeks will be gathering at dinners, parties and socials. Enjoy yourself but don’t be shy or intimidated. Go on, make the request, say it aloud “Let’s say prayers.” Why not? God is good. Thank Him. Blessings, Fr Tom

YEAR OF FAITH

St. John Neumann, C.Ss.R. Missionary and 4th bishop of Philadelphia. Founded the first diocesan Catholic school system in U.S.

St. John Neumann learned pretty quickly what it meant to follow God's will with your whole heart and soul. He was certain that he was called to be a priest, but when the time came for ordination, the bishop

fell ill and the ordination was cancelled. It was never rescheduled, because there was an over-abundance of priests in Europe. Knowing he was meant to be a priest, John traveled all the way from Bohemia to New York City to be ordained. He was one of only 36 priests, serving 200,000 Catholics: his 'parish' stretched from Lake Ontario throughout Pennsylvania. He became the founder of the first diocesan Catholic School system, going from only two schools to one hundred schools in his diocese.

Do you remember the old Breck Shampoo commercial that told you to "tell two friends and they will tell two friends" the result being many would find out about this wonderful product? Well, you have a wonderful gift--your faith and God's Word to help with your faith walk. Tell two friends that you would like to meet with them and discuss God's Word--"Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst," Jesus said in Matthew 18:20. Think about this as you will have an opportunity in January to do this very thing: share your faith and discuss His Word. More details to come…

Has your Bible been collecting dust? The Bible is more than a book; it is the incredible story of salvation history--God's glorious plan for leading his people -- for leading us. Find two, three or four others to share the riches of the "greatest story ever told" and gather in Jesus' name to pray and ponder His Word. More details to come...
