Healing Art Program: Art at the Bedside

Intent to Contribute Statement:

"Art is a healing tool for the mind, body and spirit. The Healing Art Program will provide an opportunity for

patients and families to explore the healing elements of artistic expression during their hospital experiences

using a variety of art medium that encourage self-expression, exploration, creativity and healing". (The Healing

Arts Committee)

The Healing Art Program was inspired by a poster presentation I saw at the Caritas Consortium several years ago.

This work was being done by staff nurses at Kaiser Santa Clara. The idea inspired me to develop a program for

stroke and neuro patients on our unit. The goal of this program is to provide the opportunity for patients and

families to facilitate healing through the use of art projects at the bedside. We have provided this service to

many patients who have reported that this program allowed for an additional component to their healing

process in ways they had never experienced. We are collecting this art which will soon be displayed for

enjoyment of our patients, families, and staff.
