Intent to Contribute Statement:

Beaded bracelets made by members of a Caring Council are given to co-workers, patients and family members

with simple messages of encouragement and gratitude.

Our departmental Caring Council, on an Orthopedic Medical-Surgical Unit, has for the past 4 years shared their

love of beading by making and distributing their bracelets during our campus Nurses Week celebration. This

year, when brainstorming for new projects and ways to extend Caring Science onto our unit, they proposed to

make the bracelets to give to co-workers, patients and family. They will be attached to small business cards with

simple messages of encouragement, thanks and other positive messages as a way to nurture and heal those

around them. The members of the Caring Council, during monthly meetings, bead and make their bracelets,

while we learn about caring science, discuss situations and share caring stories. The atmosphere transforms into

one similar to a quilting circle, becomes very vibrant and interactive. I observe the dynamics, and notice these

nurses fully enjoying the moment, engaged and passionate about their work and the impact they have on those

around them. By this small activity, not only are they creating something to share with others, but are also

caring for themselves.
