Along Hwy. 144 in Slinger are severalgreen signs that designate the road as part ofthe Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive. The signsdesignate a path that goes through 17 com-munities.

The history of t he route is explained on thestate Department of Natural Resources Website. According to information from the Website, it is believed that the first discussions of theroute occurred during meetings of the KettleMoraine Committee of the Milwaukee Chapter

of Izaack Walton League, which was meetingin the early 1940s that championed the cre-ation of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The objective of a drive of this kind was toprovide the most effective and scenic highwayroute which people could use to spend a dayor possibly two, seeing the best in the way ofnatural features in the Kettle Moraine region.Furthermore, it was to be easily accessiblefrom as many large cities as possible and leadpast or near as many developed state parksand forests as possible, the Web site stated.

According to the website, a study and sur-vey of possible routes was started.

The DNR history states: After approval ofthe proposed route by the ConservationCommission in late 1946, the whole proposalwas submitted for approval to the WisconsinHighway Commission. In 1948, the WisconsinHighway Commission approved the idea androute in principle. The Highway Commissionjoined with the Conservation Commission in

designing the green acorn sign to be used tomark the drive, but the actual erection andmaintaining of the signs fell to theConservation Department (now the WisconsinDepartment of Natural Resources). The firstpaving project was completed in 1950.

Besides Slinger, other communities on ornear the route include Elkhart Lake, Plymouth,Glenbeulah, Greenbush, Dundee,Campbellsport, Kewaskum, West Bend,Hartford, North Lake, Nashotah, Delafield,Eagle, Palmyra, LaGrange and Whitewater.

their dentist regularly.According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be

42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral orpharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths.

Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head andneck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% ofcases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chanceof spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cellcarcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makesoral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appearsas a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancercell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as aresult of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repairthemselves.

Where can oral cancer appearin my mouth?Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue.

It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise

from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivaryglands and lymph tissue.

What should I look for?Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does

not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesionon the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually palecolored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An earlywarning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or ared patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues ofthe mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when thetumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongueproblems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain maybe a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless.

How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not?A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion.

However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benignand malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A non-invasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out thepresence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method fordetermining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present isthrough biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopicevaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous.

What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determinedto be cancerous?

Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area inquestion. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can alsobe used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, andsize of the lesion.

What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer?People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are

at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are peoplethat have been diagnosed with HPV or Human PapillomaVirus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which MichaelDouglas recently associated with his throat cancer.

Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposureto radiation may also be at higher risk.

We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for yourcomplimentary oral cancer screening. This is a disease thatcan be caught early and treated with a high level of success. We look forward to meeting you. At Hampton Dental weperform an oral cancer screening every time we meet a newpatient and at each re-care visit!

    By Sam Erickson

Not everyone has to worry aboutpipes freezing in the winter, but much ofAmerica does. If the temperature in yourarea routinely drops to 20 degrees orbelow, it will be worth your time and

energy to prepare and maintain yourhome to prevent your pipes from burst-ing. Pipes burst when an ice blockageforms and the pressure builds up behindit. While you won't have ice shootinginto your home, you'll have all of thewater that has built up behind itin thebasement, in the crawlspace or throughthe walls of your house.

Proper insulation is the first step topreventative maintenance. The unheatedareas of your house are the most impor-

tant to insulate. Attics, basements andcrawlspaces are the general culprits.Polyethylene or fiberglass tubes areavailable to keep the cold out of pipes. You'll want to measure the diameter ofthe pipes and purchase the correct size. This will ensure you have to make onlyone trip to your home supply store.

Pipe insulation is carried in most bigbox stores and in all hardware andhome supply stores. It can be cheaper inthe spring months prices tend to go up

as the temperatures drop and demandgoes up. You will want to be particularlyaware of any pipes that have beenstressed by previous freezing or haverecently been installed.

If you experience significant periodsof severe winter weather, you might con-sider wrapping pipes in heat tape before

insulating them. The instructions forinstallation are very specific, and it isessential to follow them. If you don't, theheat tape can lead to fires. Heat tapealso has to be checked regularly toensure it is still functioning effectively.

Once you've taken all of the prereq-

uisite steps, you'll still have some mainte-nance to do to ensure you don't wake upin a puddle. When the temperature isexpected to drop, turn on your faucets, particularly those that flow along out-side walls and are the most exposed tothe cold. This will reduce the pressureand can prevent an explosion in thepipes, even if an ice dam does form.Opening cabinets that contain pipes willlet the warm air from the rest of yourhouse flow onto the pipes, keeping them

warmer. You can take one more step and

check the basement and garage for anyleaks. Look particularly for places wherecold air could be directly applied topipes from cracked windows, gaps orareas where the insulation has wornaway. Applying your general insulationstrategies will save money on your ener-gy bill, and it can also keep your pipeswarmer and delay or prevent a freeze.

    Preventative maintenance is never an

attractive fix. It's neither a new skylightnor a fresh coat of paint, and it won't beinstantly noticeable. Pipe insulation andmaintenance, however, will add to thevalue of your home in the long run bypreventing costly damage and a nastysurprise in the middle of the night.
