Dear Alice, I am so sorry for your problems.Dentures are an art form that is often lost if dentistsdon’t perform this service often. I lecture aroundthe country on dentures and there are severalimportant features that we can evaluate to see if wecan help you with your problems.

I take preliminary impressions and make customtrays to insure we capture all of the importantdenture landmarks. Improperly made dentures ordentures that are overextended can interfere withswallowing, chewing and speech.

The measurements called vertical dimension ofocclusion help us to determine how far your noseand chin should be from each other. Loss of teethis like a door without a door jam to tell it where toclose. So, we carefully measure and determinewhere your jaws should meet.

Football: Hartford rallies to beat SlingerHartford football was tied with Homestead and

Whitefish Bay for the North Shore Conference lead fol-lowing a 24-21 win at Slinger Sept. 8.

Hartford and Slinger were tied at 14-14 heading intohalftime but a 34-yard-field goal by A.J. Arndt gave theOrioles a 17-14 lead at the 8:21 mark of the fourthquarter. Slinger took the lead on a 25-yard run by TylerEvans at the 10:39 mark of the fourth quarter butHartford rallied and took the lead for good on a 1-yardrun by Logan Broker.

Slinger dropped to 2-2 in the conference. West Bend East lost to Homestead 32-3 to drop to 2-

Before you turn thefurnace or boiler on, replace the air fil-ter and hire a professional to inspect theunit more thoroughly. These steps willimprove the efficiency and life of yourfurnace and will ensure stable indoor airquality.

2. Seal Windows and Doors - If notproperly sealed, windows and doors canbe a major culprit for heat loss. To keepthe warm air inside, inspect the weath-er-stripping around your home's win-dows and doors for leaks, rot or decay.Repair or replace structural framing, andcaulk inside and out, if necessary.

3. Insulate well - One of the easiestand most effective defenses against heat

loss is proper insulation. Prevent colddrafts from entering and the loss ofheated air through basement headers,which, when left exposed, can makeyour furnace work harder. Look for amoisture-resistant product offering highthermal performance, such as RoxulComfortbatt insulation. This type ofmineral wool insulation makes installa-tion simple. All that's needed is a serrat-ed blade or bread knife. Cut the batt tofit the cavity and press into place. Theinsulation will help improveenergy effi-ciency as soon as it's in place and pro-vide savings over the lifetime of yourhome. Comfortbatt can also be used totop or replace old attic insulation. Aimfor an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

4. Backyard Care - Save your prop-erty from potential damage by trimmingovergrown trees and shrubs to preventice-laden branches from thrashingagainst electrical wires and your home'sexterior. Drain/shut off any exteriorfaucets and sprinkler systems to preventfreezing. Ensure rain or snow drainsaway from the house to avoid foundationproblems.

5. Roof and Gutters - Inspect yourroof for shingles that are warped, dam-aged or even missing to prevent a futureleak. Use roofing cement and a caulkinggun to seal joints where water couldpenetrate, such as around the chimney,skylights or vent pipes. Make sure thatyour gutters and downspouts are secure-ly fastened. Downspouts should extendat least five feet away from the home toprevent flooding.

Spring and summer may be the sea-sons most often associated with land-scaping and lawn care, but tending tolawns and gardens is a year-round job. Iflawn and garden responsibilities dipconsiderably in winter, then fall is thelast significant chance before the newyear that homeowners will have toaddress the landscaping around theirhomes.

Fall lawn care differs from spring andsummer lawn care, even if the warmtemperatures of summer linger intoautumn. Homeowners who want theirlawns to thrive year-round can takeadvantage of the welcoming weather offall to address any existing or potentialissues.

• Keep mowing, but adjust howyou mow. It's important that homeown-ers continue to mow their lawns so longas grass is growing. But as fall transi-tions into winter, lower the blades so thegrass is cut shorter while remainingmindful that no blade of grass shouldever be trimmed by more than one-third.Lowering the blades will allow more sun-light to reach the grass in the monthsahead.

• Remove leaves as they fall. Muchlike apple-picking and foliage, rakingleaves is synonymous with fall. Somehomeowners may wait to pick up a rakeuntil all of the trees on their propertiesare bare. However, allowing fallen leavesto sit on the ground for extended peri-ods of time can have an adverse effecton grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawnmay ultimately suffocate the grass byforming an impenetrable wall thatdeprives the lawn of sunlight and oxy-gen. The result is dead grass and possi-bly even fungal disease. Leaves may notneed to be raked every day, but home-

owners should periodically rake andremove leaves from their grass, even ifthere are plenty left to fall still hangingon the trees.

• Repair bald spots. Summer exactsa toll on lawns in various ways, and evenhomeowners with green thumbs may endup with a lawn filled with bald spotscome September. Autumn is a great timeto repair these bald spots. Lawn repairmixes like Scotts® PatchMaster containmulch, seed and fertilizer to repair baldspots, which can begin to recover in aslittle as seven days. Before applyingsuch products, remove dead grass andloosen the top few inches of soil. Followany additional manufacturer instructionsas well.

• Aerate the turf. Aerating reducessoil compacting, facilitating the deliveryof fertilizer and water to a lawn's roots.While many homeowners, and particular-ly those who take pride in tending totheir own lawns, can successfully aeratetheir own turf, it's best to first have soiltested so you know which amendmentsto add after the ground has been aerat-ed. Gardening centers and homeimprove-ment stores sell soil testing kits thatmeasure the pH of soil, but homeownerswho want to test for nutrients or heavymetals in their soil may need to sendtheir samples to a lab for further testing.

"Everyone has areason to end Alzheimer’s disease," saidDr. Sulllivan. "There are nearly 2,800individuals living with Alzheimer’s dis-ease in Washington County. The Walk toEnd Alzheimer’s gives local people theopportunity to raise money to fundresearch, and provide care and supportservices to local individuals and familiesin need." Debbie Spaeth, whose familyhas been involved in the Walk for manyyears said, "While great strides have beenmade over the past 20+ years in dealingwith heart disease and the many types of

cancer, Alzheimer's disease has not seenthe same amount of research attentionand research funding. Fortunately, overthe past few years, Alzheimer's disease isstarting to receive that awareness andfunding. The Walk to End Alzheimer'sgives us all a "concrete" way to help raisethe funds for research and awareness ofthe disease, and provide help for thoseaffected including the individual withAlzheimer’s, the family and caregivers."

Over the last five years, theWashington County Walk has raised$385,626 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’sin Washington County. The money raisedwill help individuals living withAlzheimer’s and their families access sup-port and services, including theAlzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline,support groups, research, education andtraining.
