God is the Harvest by Pastor Nathan Decker
"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle
will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared."
-Buddha
Autumn is my favorite season. Raking leaves and Pumpkin
Pie are still a joy to me. I like yard work because you can see
where you’ve been. Not all jobs give you that satisfaction.
Sometimes when you give, you don’t know what your efforts
have accomplished.
I wonder if that is how a leaf might feel. One single
leaf gets lost in the pile, but that leaf has served his or her
purpose. It’s worked hard, held on during the rainy windy
days, given its offering to the Tree who first gave it life,
purpose, and meaning. Still in all the leaves that fall, is it
possible to get lost in the pile?
Sometimes we in church get lost in the forest. We are like that leaf. We don’t realize what a
big impact our contribution is making in God’s Kingdom. This is especially true when it comes to the
church budget. Numbers, figures, and line items - my Lord! It’s really easy to throw it up into the
wind, hoping someone will come along and rake it up! Yet, God has called us all to come to the table,
sit down, and feast. Like pumpkin pie, budgets are best understood in slices.
For 2016, our total asking budget pie is $404,980. When you
give a dollar to the church’s pie, here’s how it’s sliced up:
Ministry Programs 4% Staff 45%
Missions 16% Administration 35%
I like to think about this pie from God the Farmer’s
perspective. On a farm you have to have seed. That’s our
Missions. Our missions are our apportionments that support
Christ’s work near and far. We have missionaries from Asia to Appalachia. As a church we help the
poor and hungry locally and globally as well as raise our voice against the system that keeps people in
such dire living conditions. This is where we impact our community and nation by changing the cycle
of poverty in which so many live.
Seeds need fertilizer to grow. That’s our Ministry Programs. These funds support inspiring
worship, music, age level ministries, Christian education, pastoral care, evangelism,

continued from page 2
and Spiritual formation. These are the places we grow disciples so that Christ’s great Kingdom
shall come on Earth. Recently we’ve studied the Gospel of Mark and Psalms. I can’t help but
believe that many of us are meeting Jesus again for the first time. We’ve rebooted our Youth
ministry and are in prayer about where God may grow that ministry. Growth comes from good
doses of fertilizer in the right spots in the field.
Of course there are Hired Hands, the staff. This slice provides for a pastor who will lead,
teach, and provide care. An administrative assistant in the office is there to be the voice of Jesus
on the other end of the phone when someone calls our church. We have staff to play and teach
music so that we, too, may lift our voices with the angels. The Janitor cleans up after our
activities, while the Nursery worker makes sure that the littlest angels are safe and know God loves
them. We’re a mid-size church, and I’m so excited that it takes so many to get the work done!
All farms have to have Barns and buildings, where behind the scenes work takes place.
This is where the tools are kept, the animals are given shelter, and when the harvest comes: where
the grain is brought in for the Farmer to see. This is the work of administrative funds. Our
building provides a living witness, not just on Sundays but throughout the week in Narcotics
Anonymous, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Relay for Life, community meetings, mom’s
day out, not to mention when church folks use it for weddings, funerals, and fellowship! So many
things are just there and we often forget where they come from: bulletins, newsletters, heat and
A/C, keeping instruments in tune, and the community aware.
In 2016, we are going to be a very active farm! This budget is a significant increase from
2015, and a challenge to us at High Street. Like the single leaf, it would be easy for us to fall from
the Tree in despair saying, “I’ve done all I can, and it still amounts to nothing.” The Tree gave us
life, purpose, and meaning. The Tree is God. Each time we give to God, each leaf is a stroke of
God’s generosity to the world. God is in the Harvest. Where do you see the Lord?
“The Harvest is plentiful, but the Workers are few.”
- Matthew 9:37

PENNY COLLECTION FOR JANEL ESPINOSA
Our penny collection for Janel Espinosa, the child we sponsor from the
Dominican Republic, is going pretty well. We are almost to our goal of
$180.00 for this year. This money goes to support Janel for a year of
schooling at the Bombita School in the Dominican Republic. Without our
sponsorship, he would not be able to attend school because his family cannot
afford the cost to do so.
This ongoing project at High Street has been active for about 15 years and
so far we have supported four children. Please keep bringing those pennies
(or other change) in, all year long. There is a brass penny bucket on the
Sunday School desk right as you walk into the children’s wing off the
narthex. You may also drop them by the church office during the week.
Thanks so much for your support!
There is a copy on the bulletin board near the Open Door Café of the recent newsletter from COPA, the
organization that provides for and runs the two schools in the Dominican Republic that Janel attends.
Reverend Connie Di Leo of the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church is in charge of this
ministry.
THE BACKPACK PROGRAM
Our sponsorship of 50 children for the Backpack Program at S.P. Morton Elementary School in
Franklin is going well. We have completed our first month and everything went smoothly. At our
first “packing session” we had a great turnout and even had a special guest, Jason Chandler, the
principal at S.P. Morton. He was very interested in and impressed with the program, and he
expressed how grateful he was on behalf of these food-insecure children for what we, as a church
family, are doing.
As you may remember, to sponsor these children, there is a financial commitment as well. To
provide the food for the backpacks twice a month for 10 months out of the year, the cost is $108
per child. So far, for this year, we are a little over halfway towards our goal of $5400. You may
sponsor one child or give any amount you wish to help us reach our goal. If you write a check,
please make it payable to High Street UMC and make a notation that it is for the Backpack
Program. You may put it in the offering plate on Sunday morning, mail or bring it by the church
office during the week. Thanks so much for your generous support of this mission project for our
local children. Our next “packing session” will be held on Tuesday evening, November 3, in the
church Fellowship Hall at 5:00 p.m. If you can get there early to help set up, that would be great.
Also, feel free to bring a friend! This is a great way to invite others to show them what High
Street Church is all about!

LAND USE UPDATE
June Fleming and many other citizens spoke briefly at the Planning Commission meeting on October 8 in
regard to the rezoning application that has been submitted by the Hampton Roads Development. She
expressed our position that High Street United Methodist Church does not support the proposal that has
been submitted. She said that HSUMC does support economic development and creating jobs.
However, the application has not been vetted, nor is it sound or reasonable for anyone to approve
rezoning to industrial use.
The public, along with the planning commission, had many questions and concerns related to the zoning
application. As we understand it, currently, those questions have been submitted to the developer who
will be taking the next month to answer them. Therefore, the originally planned November Public
Hearing will NOT be held. However, we encourage everyone to attend the November 10 Planning
Commission and continue to stay informed and involved in the process as it moves along.
Your support is appreciated and encouraged. For additional information, please contact June Fleming
at 757-516-2687 or Jane Riddick-Fries at 757-630-8711. If you would like to review the application that
has been presented, please get a copy from the church office.
** A public hearing on the Rezoning Application submitted by Hampton Roads Development to rezone
the 439 acres next to Riverdale Elementary School along Camp Parkway is tentatively scheduled for
December 10 at the Planning Commission Meeting at 7:30 pm at the Southampton County Adminis-
trative Offices. Everyone is encouraged to attend and be a part of the process and future growth of our
community.
United Methodist Women
Our UMW members are back in full swing with all the fall activities. We all enjoyed a wonderful UMW
Sunday on October 11. Cara Butler did a fantastic job of coordinating the event. Mary Burton spoke to us
about her mission trip to Cambodia this year. Mary was a wonderful speaker and she certainly inspired us
with her message as well as her youth. We recognized Cara Butler for her outstanding work in our church.
Please congratulate her when you see her.
The Daytime UMW will meet on Monday, November 2 in the Fellowship Hall. We will enjoy coffee and
conversation at 9:30 and our meeting will begin at 10:00. Our program will be about the World Thank
Offering and a surprise “hands on” activity for our shut-ins. Please join us and plan to deliver a goodie to
someone who will definitely appreciate a short visit and a treat.
The Working Women’s Group will meet on November 23 at 5:30 in the library.
Mark your calendars for November 14, 2015. The Men’s Brunswick Stew Sale is that day. The UMW will
be having a bake sale, our annual pecan sale, and a gently used purse sale. We are adding scarves and
jewelry this year. Please see if you have items to donate and also plan to make a purchase. We will also be
selling fresh apples. Plan to bake something for the sale, shop for goodies, and help out with our projects.
We need your help with this even more this year since we will also have a booth at the Downtown Fall
Festival on the same day. Let’s work together to make this a huge success.
We always welcome new members. Plan to join one of our groups if you are not a member. We have a
wonderful group of ladies who work and play together in Christian Fellowship.

525,600 MINUTES
“525,600 minutes, 525,600 moments so dear. 525,600 minutes - how do you measure,
measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights,
in cups of coffee. In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes, how do you measure a year in the life?”
I have borrowed these lyrics from one of my favorite songs “Seasons of Love” from the
Broadway musical, Rent. November 5th will mark nine years since our sweet Carter’s
journey to Heaven began. If we follow the songs lyrics, there would be 4,730,400 minutes
that he has been gone from us! I can say that of those minutes, not very many pass that we
don’t think of him, remember something he did or said, shed a tear, laugh, hear a song he
liked, or look at his picture and wonder what he would look like after nine years. He
would be almost 24, a young man! Thankfully, Josh Turner and Jake Pittman indulge me
with bear hugs from time to time (they grew up with Carter and are his age and I imagine
his height).
So, with those minutes in mind, I urge you to live your minutes to the fullest. Use them to
tell folks you love them, give extra hugs, be kind to others, be quiet and listen to all the
sounds around you, watch the sun set, stay up till midnight, share a cup of coffee with
someone, think of a Carter story and smile, and especially, take time to pray. In the 14
years or 7,358,400 minutes that we had Carter with us, he filled our hearts with much love
and joy.
So, as the rest of the lyrics written below say, “remember the love, remember a year in the
life of a friend” and measure all of your minutes with love!
It’s time now to sing out, tho the story never ends, let’s celebrate,
remember a year in the life of friends.
Remember the love! Remember the love!
Remember the love! Measure in love! Seasons of love! Seasons of love!

OPEN HEARTS MISSION GARDEN
The United Methodist Men enjoyed a delicious breakfast on October 17th. To help work
off the extra calories provided by Dr. Mike’s famous Cheese Grits, some of the men
joined our volunteers for a heavy duty work out removing the fall tomato poles and wire.
We appreciate the extra help.
Our Open Hearts Mission Garden harvested 243 lbs. of sweet potatoes with the help of
twelve Boy Scouts, under the guidance of three scout leaders, one scout mother, and
eleven garden volunteers on October 20th. It is amazing how many hands make the work
load lighter. We thank all of you for being a part of our mission project.
We are waiting for the cabbage to mature so we can share a fall treat
with Cooperative Ministry. Planning for the 2016 planting season has
begun. We are collecting fall leaves to enrich the soil for next year.
Please bag your oak leaves and drop off at the garden. Thank you for
all your support of this worthy project.
Nancy Turner, Volunteer Coordinator
SUNDAY SCHOOL BREAKFAST
Our next Sunday School Breakfast will be held on
November 8 in the Fellowship Hall from 9:15 to 10:00 a.m.

each month and takes the place of the Open Door Café for
that Sunday. There is a charge to cover expenses and it is
a full hot breakfast. The cost is $3.00 for adults and teens
over the age of 10 and $1.00 for children 10 and under.
The maximum charge for a family is $10.00.
Please make a reservation by signing up on one of the sign-up sheets on the round table in
