ADVEADVEADVEADVEADVENT AND FAMILY WRENT AND FAMILY WRENT AND FAMILY WRENT AND FAMILY WRENT AND FAMILY WREATHATHATHATHATH

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus,

As we know well, the word ‘Advent’ comes from the Latin word“adventus”, which means “coming”. The season of Advent is an importantcall to renewal and preparation for God’s coming to visit us.

Just as the preparations surrounding the biblical birth of Child Jesusbegan with the founding of the HOLY FAMILY, our preparations for thisChristmas will achieve its true purpose when we are convinced totransform our families into Holy Families modeled after Joseph, Maryand Jesus. Towards this end and in continuation to our reflections on‘Family Prayer’, I wish to reflect on a very meaningful advent traditionthat is gaining prominence in many parishes of our Archdiocese: the‘Advent Wreath’!

Though the origins of the advent wreath tradition are uncertainthere are evidences to ascertain that it started more as a house-holdtradition than in a church setting. The members of a family wouldgather around the advent wreath before dinner and light thecorresponding candle of the day as part of their family prayer. Thishousehold practice has now been incorporated into church liturgies.

In a manner of rediscovering the roots of this tradition, I encourageall the families of our Archdiocese to make it a part of our family adventobservance this year. I would recommend you to spend time as a familysetting up the advent wreath, explaining its significance and richsymbolism to our children to catechize them with the meaning of thisliturgical season. It would be meaningful for each member of the familyto take his or her turn to light the candles during the family prayerbefore the night meals.

The wreath is circular, symbolizing the everlasting love of God andmade of evergreens symbolizing God’s eternity. There are four candleson the wreath, lighted every Sunday each representing one week ofadvent. There are three purple candles symbolizing prayer and penanceand a rose candle symbolizing joy. There are also a few moderntraditions which include a fifth white candle, symbolizing baby Jesus,to be lighted on Christmas Eve. The traditional themes attributed toevery advent week are wonderful opportunities for the family membersto reflect and pray in preparation for the Lord’s coming with one heartand spirit.

Week 1: Prophets’ Sunday - Expectation: Week 1: Prophets’ Sunday - Expectation: Week 1: Prophets’ Sunday - Expectation: Week 1: Prophets’ Sunday - Expectation: Week 1: Prophets’ Sunday - Expectation: Advent is an opportunetime for us to orient our aspirations and expectations as individualfamily members into a collective family search, where every memberboth supports and is supported by the other. St. Paul writes in his letterto the Romans 8:22, “We know that the whole creation has beengroaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”Paul described the advent of redemption as a common thirst of allcreation. When our personal aspirations are blended to become ashared family goal, we discover renewed strength and motivation inlife. It is also an efficient way to prioritize our spiritual aspirations overand above the rest for as Jesus said, “Strive first for the kingdom ofGod and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you aswell”. (Matthew 6:33)

Week 2: Angels’ Sunday - Proclamation: Week 2: Angels’ Sunday - Proclamation: Week 2: Angels’ Sunday - Proclamation: Week 2: Angels’ Sunday - Proclamation: Week 2: Angels’ Sunday - Proclamation: After the ascension ofJesus, the disciples stood staring into the sky. And suddenly two angelsappear and ask them: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here lookinginto the sky?” God does not want us to keep standing, staring into thesky. This is not Christian waiting. He has given them a command, “Toproclaim the Good News to the ends of the world; to baptize, to healand to cast out demons.” Their mission was not to stand simply lookinginto the sky. They are obliged to go and proclaim the Good News. AsCatholic families, our advent waiting consists in proclaiming thepresence and activity of Christ in the most ordinary events and peopleof our lives.

Week 3: Week 3: Week 3: Week 3: Week 3: Gaudete Gaudete Gaudete Gaudete Gaudete Sunday/Shepherds’ Sunday - Celebration/Sunday/Shepherds’ Sunday - Celebration/Sunday/Shepherds’ Sunday - Celebration/Sunday/Shepherds’ Sunday - Celebration/Sunday/Shepherds’ Sunday - Celebration/Joy:Joy:Joy:Joy:Joy: One might ask why we would anticipate the joy of Christmasalready during the third week of advent. There is a deeper biblical andspiritual meaning to this anticipation. Christian joy is not in the obviousand visible evidences of securities. The shepherds rejoiced in the visionof a baby in seeming poverty because their joy was rooted in hope.Christian joy is rooted in hope even when good times are not so evidentor obvious. Pope Francis beautifully states in Evangelii Gaudium, No. 6,“Joy adapts and changes, but it always endures, even as a flicker oflight born of our personal certainty that, when everything is said anddone, we are infinitely loved.”

Week 4: Magi Sunday - Fulfillment:Week 4: Magi Sunday - Fulfillment:Week 4: Magi Sunday - Fulfillment:Week 4: Magi Sunday - Fulfillment:Week 4: Magi Sunday - Fulfillment: Advent reminds us that thefulfillment that we so earnestly seek in our lives, can only be found indiscovering the presence of Jesus as a family. Advent is not just aboutthe fulfillment of a set of biblical promises, rather a celebration of thehope of fulfillment to be experienced in our familial relationships witheach other as parents, children and couples in family life here andnow. This is the fulfillment that our advent celebrations promise usand it is in our hands to work towards its fulfillment.

I wish you all a very meaningful preparation of advent and a veryblessed Christmas. May the incarnated son of God inspire us to becometruly Holy Families. Dear brothers and sisters, as our state struggles torecover from the aftermath of Cyclone Gaja, I invite each one of you tocontribute your might in kind and in prayers for the rescue andrehabilitation of our farmers of the Delta region and people affectedacross different districts of our state of Tamil Nadu. May Mother Maryand St Joseph intercede for us all.

YEAR OF THE EUCHARISTYEAR OF THE EUCHARISTYEAR OF THE EUCHARISTYEAR OF THE EUCHARISTYEAR OF THE EUCHARIST

Dear Parish Priests, Priests, Religious, and lay faithful,

My ardent wishes of God’s love, peace and blessings to all of you!

The present socio-cultural, political, economic and spiritual scenariochallenges us to live concretely the mercy of God our Father, love ofOur Lord Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. As true witnessesto God’s merciful love, we are called to do this with courage andmeaningful hope.

I consider the coming Liturgical Year as a great blessing from God,our loving Father, that will enable us to glorify God, to make our lives asCatholics meaningful, to free ourselves from the enticing power of theillusions of this world and to be strengthened to live a life of faith livedin accordance with the Gospel values.

My dear brothers and sisters, we will celebrate the coming LiturgicalYear that begins on 02 December 2018, the First Sunday of Advent, asthe Year of the Eucharist in our Archdiocese. I am delighted to informyou that the entire Liturgical Year will be a long and beautifulpreparation for the Eucharistic Congress that we will celebrate on thelast day of this Liturgical Year, 24 November 2019, the solemnity ofChrist the King.

Every Christian vocation, including the priesthood and consecratedvirginity, are deeply spousal, life-giving and self-sacrificing.

To really get married....it is not enough to celebrate marriage! Weneed to make a journey from the ‘I’ to the ‘We’ and think and livefor each other.

In the priesthood we love the people of God with all the paternity, tenderness and strength of a spouse and a father.

Saints are not “Supermen” who are “born perfect” but rather areordinary people who followed God with all their Heart.

Unhealthy drinking water an immense shame in 21st century. Entrepreneurship needed in face of scandalous poverty.

Singing elevates soul to listen to the Spirit. When we meet the Lord we will bring only what we have given. Go up to God to go down to others. Communion, service and mercy foster Eucharistic culture. Politics is a commitment to humanity and holiness

meaningful the mystery of Catholic life. It is also a sacrament thatreminds us that Christ is truly with us. Jesus, who, through his birth, life, sufferings, death and resurrection, revealed the love of God, ourheavenly Father, keeps offering us, through the Eucharist, his presenceand a means to salvation. Through participating in the Eucharisticsacrifice that we offer every day in the memory of his supreme sacrificeof his very life at Calvary, through partaking in the Eucharistic meal, through the adoration of the divine presence in the Eucharist. Everyone of us can become a true sacrament that can transform this world.Eucharist is the very centre of our Catholic liturgy. All our liturgicalactivities remind us of the real presence of Jesus in our midst.

The universal Church, which understands clearly the inestimablevalue of the Eucharist, desires that the people of God - the members ofthe Church - through their belief in and celebration of the Eucharist, are able to live a true Christian life. It wants them to nurture an ardentEucharistic devotion and thereby come to give to the Eucharist theimportance it deserves. Therefore the Church encourages acts ofEucharistic devotion in our personal lives, our families, parishes and, from time to time, organizes International Eucharistic Congresses.

From the first Eucharistic Congress organized in France in 1881,we have had 51 International Eucharistic Congresses since then. It issignificant that St Pope Paul VI came to our country to attend theInternational Eucharistic Congress held in Mumbai in 1964. The Churchhas announced that the next International Eucharistic Congress willbe held in the year 2020 in the city of Budapest in Hungary.

Our former Archbishop Louis Mathias SDB, during his office asBishop of Madras, called for a National Eucharistic Congress, invitingnot merely the entire Church in India, but also the Church in Myanmar(then called Burma) and the Church in Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon). This 6th National Eucharistic Congress was held in Chennai in 1937.That we are going to have a Eucharistic Congress, at the Archdiocesanlevel, nearly 80 years later, is God’s gracious will, for which we need tothank him. I am sure that this much-needed, long awaited event willstrengthen our faith.

Reasons for the Eucharistic CongressReasons for the Eucharistic CongressReasons for the Eucharistic CongressReasons for the Eucharistic CongressReasons for the Eucharistic CongressSome may ask why we need to organize a Eucharistic Congress in

our Archdiocese now. Dear brothers and sisters, Eucharist is the verycentre of our Christian life. Every parish community has the EucharisticLord as its centre. It is the Eucharist that establishes His presence inour midst. He is the cornerstone of the Church (Eph 2:20). We professour faith that we are an edifice built on Him and so members of Hismystical body, while He is the head (Col 1:18). This is why the Eucharistic

sacrifice plays a unique role in the liturgical acts of the Church. However, our desire and enthusiasm to witness to the Church’s teachingon the Eucharist and to live that faith keep declining day by day.Instead of being an enthusiastic celebration in which everyone activelyparticipates, the daily Mass and even the Sunday Mass is becomingjust a spectacle which people merely watch and observe. More andmore Catholic families seem to come to the church only on rareoccasions to receive the sacraments. The reason for this sorry state ofaffairs is that they are not aware of the immeasurable value of theEucharist. They are not aware that the Eucharistic celebration isindispensable to our Catholic life.

We cannot ignore the fact that our personal morality, our day-to-day family life, and our involvement in social issues are seriously affectedby the challenges we encounter in our daily life, the ruptures in therelationship between God and us, and the failures we face because ofthe weakening of our religious faith. At all levels of our society humanrights are violated with impunity, inequality and discrimination arejustified, and political power and public office are being misused tomuzzle dissent. Our natural resources are being plundered and ourlife’s basic necessities are denied. Values that emphasize the well-being of our fellow humans – like equality, fraternity and unity – arebetrayed, and so a culture of death and destruction seems to flourish. There are many more social evils that denigrate human life.

Even within the Holy Catholic Church several materialistic, worldlytrends are gaining prominence, and hence innumerable conflicts arise. We come across attitudes and activities that run as counter witness. We need to relentlessly work for union of minds and unity of all humans. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has said clearly that the call to holinessis not addressed to a chosen few, but to all who, thanks to their baptism, share in one Eucharistic bread.

The Eucharistic devotion that we are not yet aware of andThe Eucharistic devotion that we are not yet aware of andThe Eucharistic devotion that we are not yet aware of andThe Eucharistic devotion that we are not yet aware of andThe Eucharistic devotion that we are not yet aware of andwhy it is indispensablewhy it is indispensablewhy it is indispensablewhy it is indispensablewhy it is indispensable

Many a people ask, if the social evils that afflict us are in some wayconnected with the Eucharist. The response to this question is foundin the theological assertions related to the Eucharist. Eucharist is asacrifice offered freely out of love. Eucharist is our spiritual food.Eucharist is a sign of our unity. We know all these theological truths, but how many of us have experienced them in our personal lives?

The New Testament tells us that the culmination of the sacrificialofferings made in the time of the Old Testament is Jesus, the Son ofGod who offered Himself as the supreme sacrifice to atone for the sinsof the world. This is why we think of Eucharist as a sacrifice. We obtained

the spiritual strength needed to continue the mission of Jesus Christthrough the celebration of the Eucharist which is His body and blood. It becomes our spiritual food. The same bread and the same cup whichthe priest celebrates, taking the place of Christ, also becomes the signof our unity. Because we share the same bread and the same cup inunion with the priest who, taking the place of Christ, offers theEucharistic sacrifice, it becomes a sign of our unity. It becomes theReal Presence of Christ as the bread and the wine become His bodyand blood. This is how through the Eucharist God gives us the strengthwe need to live as His apostles and witnesses to unity.

Jesus prayed to His heavenly Father in these words in what is referredto as his priestly prayer in the Gospel of John: “May they all be one asyou Father are in me and I am in you. May they be one in us, so theworld may believe that you have sent me” (John 17: 21). He wanted Hisdisciples to remain united among themselves and with others. This iswhat makes meaningful the motto we have chosen for the EucharisticCongress: “Witness in Eucharistic Oneness.” We who accept that wepartake in the same bread should bear witness to it by our unity.

Therefore all of us in our Archdiocese – the Archbishop, the clergy, the religious and the laity - are called to be united with Christ andamong ourselves, in thought, in action and thereby to witness to theEucharistic mystery.

In this context let me call upon you to revisit and assess ourEucharistic devotion – as individuals, as families, as parishes, asvicariates, and as Archdiocese. I do hope that your prayers andcollaboration will help us all experience a deep spiritual renewal. Letme request all of you – adults, youth and children - to activelyparticipate in all the initiatives that we will launch throughout this yearand thereby come to know and experience the Eucharistic Lord, throughparticipating in the Eucharistic celebration with total involvement andgetting to know the teachings of the Church on the Eucharist.

As our Holy Father says in his message for the Eucharistic Congress– 2020, let us imbibe and impart ‘the Eucharistic Culture’ whose mainelements are unity, service and mercy.

What we will begin to do immediatelyWhat we will begin to do immediatelyWhat we will begin to do immediatelyWhat we will begin to do immediatelyWhat we will begin to do immediatelyIn the first stage of our preparation for the Archdiocesan Eucharistic

Congress,

1. Let me instruct that Eucharistic adoration for a minimum of 30minutes be organized in all parish churches, sub-stations, religioushouses and seminaries every day from today onwards.

2. Let me request all – as individuals and families – to participate inthe Eucharistic celebration on as many days as possible during theweek, understanding the meaning and implications of the sacramentwe celebrate.

For every one of us, let the Eucharist which is the life-giving presenceof Jesus, become the centre of our life!

Let Mary, our Blessed Mother, who bore him in her heart and womb, guide us in this special Eucharistic Year and intercede for us!

My prayers and blessings to you all!

In the maternal embrace of Mary, our Mother,

+ Most Rev Dr George AntonysamyArchbishop of Madras - Mylapore
