A Message From Our President, Brian L. Nagle When a handful of parents started Handi-Crafters, Inc. in 1961, their goal was to provide a place of work, caregiving, and community for their dierently abled children after their schooling was complete. We now serve over 400 amazing people annually, many of whom come to Handi-Crafters on a daily basis to lead more productive, independent, and fullling lives. We never forget for a moment that we are entrusted with the awesome responsibility to help them achieve those things. We could not do that without your support. As we started the year, we faced some proposed state rule making that challenged our clients’ choice to work at Handi-Crafters. What was their goal? They sought to regulate, to dictate, that our clients spend a predetermined amount of time in the community, with people who do not have disabilities. We are all about our clients spending time in the community, when they choose to do so. I suppose there is a certain stigma with the old term “sheltered workshop.” I challenge you to come spend just a few hours at Handi-Crafters, Inc., where our sta works tirelessly to develop employment skills, life skills, and people skills. Sit with our clients who have friends who are coworkers and supervisors who are caregivers. Yes, we protect our clients, we care for them, but they are anything but sheltered and they and their families, just like all of us who want to enjoy independence and dignity, deserve the freedom of choice. With the support of our benefactors, families and clients and Amy Rice and our tremendous sta, after visits to Harrisburg and Washington, DC, we overcame those proposals. In March, Senators Dinniman and Boscola convened a Senate hearing at Handi-Crafters. The room was lled with customers, clients, sta, families, Board members, lawmakers and more and our message of choice was heard. We were grateful when our legislators passed a resolution supporting programs like Handi-Crafters and the right of choice of our clients and families. Now, as we enter the new Year, our focus of service to our clients, and care enriched with the love, concern and compassion of the parents who started Handi-Crafters ve an a half decades ago, remains at the forefront of our mission. One of our biggest challenges right now is space. On the heels of the installation of our new security system, and on the cusp of an overhaul of the bathrooms in the Spatola Center, we need to expand that building. We have been blessed with many wonderful customers who provide us with great work for our clients. We simply need more space to do our work. When we start a new job, or nish an old one, our clients cheer. That is a great moment to witness. Soon, I will be sharing with you the plans for an expansion that will feature, not just space for work, but for advancement in learning, service, and technology for the benet of our clients. We look forward to your continued support. We simply could not continue our mission without it. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you very much,

The Annual Spring Benefit Evening was a terrific event. Over $150,000 was raised through generous sponsorship support. The evening was presented by Key Bank and Bentley Systems and a host of wonderful and dedicated supporters. Nearly 200 guests attended the evening held at The Phoenixville Foundry. Under the theme of “The Great American Songbook,” guests enjoyed a delicious sit-down dinner and special concert performance by musician Paul Jost and his band. A super evening was shared in tremendous celebration of Handi-Crafters incredible mission and the extraordinary individuals we serve!
The special evening also gave Handi-Crafters the opportunity to honor and recognize Bentley Systems and The Bentley Family with our 2018 Best Friend Award. “Handi-Crafters, and most importantly our clients, have benetted tremendously as a result of the generosity and leadership of Bentley Systems and the Bentley Family,” said Brian Nagle, President of the Handi-Crafters Board of Directors. “The Bentley’s have done so much for our community, leading by enormous example through their corporate giving and individual philanthropy.”

Karen Martel probably doesn’t think about her first day on the job in April 1983, she is just as inspired and intensely
focused on the people she works with today as she was 34 years ago when she started her
career at Handi-Crafters.
Karen Martel has always been a very passionate advocate for individuals with disabilities. After earning her degree from West Chester University in Special Education, Martel landed a job at Handi-Crafters. Martel’s career began leading the skill development of non-verbal clients in communication and articulation, her work was pace-setting at the time and even earned recognition by the County for her work. As the core employment services at Handi-Crafters progressed, Martel shifted roles to join the expanding sta of Workshop Supervisors. As a Workshop Supervisor she could continue to work with clients one-on-one, and has since held the position for the past twenty-ve years. "I enjoy my job as a Workshop Supervisor," said Martel. "That is what I like best, to work side-by-side with the clients and encourage their development and watch them grow. It's the little progress that is exciting as she points out a client; see he is now adding pull-tags to the snack bags. That is a task he could not do a few months ago. He is doing it now and its reflective in his paycheck!"

The purchase of a new Box Truck was made possible by donors this year.
Over $80,000 was raised to make the important purchase. The new truck is a vital part of our Production Management Business. The box truck is on the roadways daily making deliveries of our nished work and also picking up components from customers. We added special graphics to enhance advertising while on the road. It worked! We love the many inquiries we receive from people who want to know more about Handi-Crafters and the work we do. The super smiles and super models are real clients who gave their blessing to use the photo and are excited about their picture on the side of the truck.

Inside Production Management at Handi-Crafters... At Handi-Crafters we boast about our 10,000 square feet of warehouse space. It takes serious eciency to hold down the operations between two warehouses located on our campus. Tractor trailer loads come in and out of our Production Management business throughout the day. Forklifts haul nished product and components from the warehouse to the workshop oor. Starting at 8 am our loading docks are active and our warehouse sta moving to keep to the beat of Handi-Crafters. Kevin Anderson and Dave Court coordinate our two warehouses and direct all operations. Anderson, who has been with Handi-Crafters for 16 years says the team is constantly loading trucks and moving materials to be assembled for production contracts. “People always marvel at our operations. We have a great system in place,” said Anderson. The warehouse operation works hand-in-hand with production sta. Production is led by Director, Mariana Tarau. “We get better and better, ” said Tarau, who has been the Director of Production for the last ve years. “It is a streamlined operation, and one we are extremely proud of. We have moved the mark for customers over and over again. No job is too little or too big or too complex for Handi-Crafters to manage. Kevin and Dave do a phenomenal job.” Handi-Crafters warehouse department also operates as a technical learning and development area for clients to gain exposure and knowledge. "The warehouse gives clients the opportunity to learn new skills and to work directly in warehousing operations. We have had individuals certify in forklift driving and land new jobs in the community."

At Handi-Crafters we balance a thriving Production Management Business with a Skill Development Center. Our business contracts are the key to our success. Customers who contract with our business are not only local but global and choose socially responsible project outsourcing through Handi-Crafters. We are competitive in our bidding for contracts. We generate over $3-million in annual sales. All work is done by hand-assembly by our workforce. Each client is part of a job and has the opportunity to grow their skills and work as a team. We are proud of the 100% satisfaction/performance rating we receive by customers. Ninety-ve percent of production revenue goes directly to the paychecks of our workforce. Our clients are paid bi-weekly, and with their paycheck they become contributing members of their communities. One of our oldest jobs is the assembly of shoe-care kits. We have been working on the production of shoe-care kits that feature Kiwi Shoe Polish for nearly 50 years. In 2011, we took the production management with this customer to a new level for Handi-Crafters and began purchasing all components to ll annual contract orders, which means ordering product from overseas (China/Germany) with four months lead time. Our workforce assembles nearly 1.2 million kits annually. Shoe-Care kitsaccount for 69% of our customer sales.

We celebrate JOBS at Handi-Crafters. We celebrate progress, and skills. We celebrate the removal of barriers to employment. We celebrate pride in having a job and we celebrate hard work and dedication. Through our Community Employment Department we work hard at the goals of matching great employees with great employers. One of the initial steps to accomplishing this goal is through our World of Work {WOW} Training Course. This course was developed by our Community Employment team. WOW is a 8-week preparatory training for clients to learn the right skills to be successful in competitive employment. WOW encourages self condence and positive attitudes. WOW also helps to develop interviewing skills and builds proper workplace etiquette through role playing with job coaches. Upon completing WOW training, our Employment Specialists then work one-on-one with clients and help them take the next steps to competitive employment. This year, we celebrate a sampling of our success stories and cheer on great employers such as the Witmer Public Safety Group, Giant Foods and The Grocery Outlet. Witmer Public Safety Group interviewed four candidates last spring and all four were hired. Elizabeth Myambo worked hard on the mobile work crew this year and landed a job she really loves at GIANT and a big shout-out to our friend, David Taylor, who spent almost twenty years working at Handi-Crafters. Upon completing the WOW training, David found the condence he needed and now works for The Grocery Outlet in Coatesville.
“Goals are something you look forward to reaching with a lot of steps in between.”~ Trent Roseboom, upon graduating from WOW

In 1982 Handi-Crafters learned of a generous windfall as part of the closing of a will and estate. This was an unprecedented contribution to Handi-Crafters. In order to best manage the gift, the Board of Directors initiated the creation of the Handi-Crafters Foundation.
The Handi-Crafters Foundation exists because of a very generous couple who simply embraced Handi-Crafters mission and decided to dedicate half of their estate to support the future of the organization. With Mr. & Mrs. Perry Tyson's estate settled, the Foundation was formally organized in 1982 and the assets of their estate were invested through the oversight of the Foundation Board of Trustees.
Through the many decades, The Handi-Crafters Foundation has distributed the legacy of the Tyson's wishes to stabilize Handi-Crafters nancial position and provide funding for special projects under its 501c3 status. In 1984, the initial distribution to Handi-Crafters from the foundation awarded $50,000 to help fund building improvements and provide transportation subsidies for clients. The foundation continues to make annual distributions under its principal purpose as originally established, "The assets, prots and net incomes of the trust shall be dedicated to the making of grants to, or for the benet of handicapped individuals, participating in per-vocational, vocational and other training programs of Handi-Crafters." "We are grateful to the Foundation for the years of support," said Amy Rice, Handi-Crafters Executive Director. "The Foundation has provided an endowment, so to speak, to ensure our operations for the years to come. We are very grateful to the trustees who have managed the generous legacy of the Tyson's and have dedicated their time and expertise to this important entity."
In Memory...Handi-Crafters Foundation Board of Trustees and the Handi-Crafters organization would like to acknowledge the late Matthew Kelly who lost his valiant battle to cancer this year. Matt spent countless hours and dedicated over a dozen years of service to Handi-Crafters. As a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees, Matt's professional guidance and expertise in wealth management were critical to preserving the valuable assets of the Foundation, guarding the legacy of the donors while supporting Handi-Crafters mission.

It was a year on a political roller coaster ride, ofups and downs, of victories and of challenges. We had to defend our long-serving, trusted mission. In doing so, we traveled to Harrisburg several times andto Washington, DC. We joined forces with other agencies in making sure our voices were heard. Our clientsand their family members were brilliant in telling their personal stories, trusting that the legislators wouldhelp us save choice, and save supported employment. We did an excellent job representing CHOICE fordierently-abled persons and their employment.
The folks that we serve generally do not have the same array of choices in their lives that their non-disabledcounterparts do. Most likely they will never marry or have children, may not ever live on their own or evenchoose where they live. Career choices and furthermore, job opportunities are very limited for ourpopulation. What we provide is extremely important and positively impacts lives.Handi-Crafters campaign to push back the looming legislation was all about choice. We fought to maintainthe array of employment choices for our individuals. We made employment a priority nearly 60 years agothrough workshop based employment. We’ve added mobile work-crews, and competitive employment in thecommunity to our continuum of services. It’s hard for us to understand why the rst two options could everbe in danger of going away, leaving only competitive employment in the community as the only option. Fornow, we have succeeded in maintaining choices for employment and supported employment as anoption and an opportunity.
Handi-Crafters goal and my personnel goal in the years ahead will be to strengthen our programs to growand enhance the services we oer under the wonderful umbrella of employment. To position Handi-Craftersin the community at large as a thriving business enterprise, oering valuable service to our business customers. We have a very talented and skilled workforce of passionate individuals who choose to work here atHandi-Crafters and who proudly work in a work-shop setting, or in the community.
