We Are Community

Our Annual Report is dedicated to Robert “Bob” Spatola. Bob was Handi-Crafters greatest Ambassador, committing nearly thirty years of dedicated

volunteer service and generous philanthropy to our mission. Bob passed away peacefully at his home on April 6, 2018.

Bob served on our Board of Directors and was Chair for two terms as well as the Chair of the 2005 Capital Campaign. Bob's infectious energy and support helped to guide

Handi-Crafters up until his final days.

His devotion was by far the greatest in caring and loving the people who work at Handi-Crafters. Bob would truly light up the workforce, knowing names of all workers, passing out hugs,

exchanging stories and playful taunts. Bob also celebrated everyone's birthday. Bob was a warm and generous friend to all. And we loved him for it.

His passion for telling Handi-Crafters story was special, heartfelt and proud. Bob not only made the commitment of his personal time, he was a true investor in our mission

and his leadership of giving was significant year after year and he challenged others to follow.

For his dedication and commitment Bob received the 2016 Best Friend Award. Bob's legacy lives strong on our building at 215 Barley Sheaf Road, The Spatola Center.

We thank Bob's wife, Hannah and his family for sharing him with us over the many years. While our lives have been changed and our hearts heavy, we celebrate the

shear honor of working with him, his exemplary leadership and for his service and his pillar of dedication.

Community is a “group of people living in the same place or havingar ular ara er s s n n a eel n ell s ers as

a resul s ar n n a u es n eres s an als

I participate in a number of communities. There is my neighborhood. A very diversegroup of individuals who share those events, such as a dog park being proposed inour neighborhood, that come together in time of need but otherwise are merrilycordial. I also belong to a very tight knit community in the practice of yoga. Every

Tuesday evening anywhere from 6-9 women come together with our teacher. I am also a resident of West Chester Borough, a broad Community of residents,

businesses and municipal services.

I can tell you that Handi-Crafters is a vibrant, very diverse community. Over 300 individuals come together each work day to accomplish a common goal, a safe

productive day with friends. My friend, Kristine, who is one of the many dynamicworkers of the Handi-Crafters community, is also a member of several other

communities. She is a central member of her life share community, a valuable andtalented member of the Special Olympics community, and a citizen

of the Coatesville Community.

We are each a product of the communities we belong to. In turn these communitiesenhance each other contributing to the life experience of the individuals.

No one community is more or less then the others, each is necessary for a complete, well lived life.

A Welcome Message From Our President & CEO, Brian L. NagleDear Friends,

As we toil our way into another year at Handi-Crafters, Inc., my faith in our mission impels me to recognize those who serve at the core of what we do, to express gratitude for the accomplishments made in the prior year by and on behalf of our clients, and to look forward to the good things to come. Handi-Crafters is open weekdays from 8am-430 pm. Our staff serve tirelessly throughout those many days. And yet when you visit, which indeed you should visit us, you will see our staff and our clients enjoying themselves, and not only packaging tins of Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty, or Kiwi Shoe Products, but sharing fellowship, a lending hand, and a good meal. Our clients are happy to be at Handi-Crafters. Our staff, from part time veterans to workshop supervisors to our directors, do their work with the same level of commit-ment and care as the parents of differently abled children who started Handi-Crafters in 1961.

We’ve made some more progress to boot. Under the Board’s leadership, toward the end of 2018, we adopted our new “4 year Strategic Vision and Plan.” I am grateful for the contributing staff and board members for enabling the preparation and adoption of this tremendous springboard. Thanks too to Carl Francis for his expert guidance with the project. With fair warning not to bite off more than we can chew, we have much work ahead. Along the way, we revamped our organizational chart and thereby launched a renewed effort toward succession planning, installed a 2018 worthy security and limited access and monitoring system, and updated the awfully outdated bathrooms in the Spatola Center.

We are progressing with plans for our new building addition, which promises to help carry us into the future of our service with a technology center, a new adult daycare facility, and other important elements that I will be telling you more about very soon. I will be asking you for your support to that end. We remain financially strong, but our call to service requires our continued efforts for support. Government fund-ing can be fleeting, and we want no client left unserved. I am so very grateful for you and your support.

Finally, I will renew my invitation that you visit. Many of our friends do. In 2018, we enjoyed volunteering visits from many friends who came and spent a day or more working side by side with our clients, including our Parents, Board of Directors, D.L. Howell and Associates, MacElree Harvey, The Hankin Group, Dupuy Synthes, SAP, Key Bank and Krapfs, West Chester University Baseball and Shire Pharmaceuticals. See you soon!

Gratefully yours,

Brian L. Nagle Handi-Crafters | Annual Report 2017-2018

The Best Friend Award is given annually by Handi-Crafters to recognize and honor service, commitment and dedication to Handi-Crafters Mission.

"This award grants us the opportunity to say thank you." said Amy Rice, Executive Director. Presenting CTDI with this award is very significant. "The support of CTDI is tremendous, if not for our customers our mission could never be fulfilled. There would be no development of skills for our workforce, no learning, no growing and no paychecks." CTDI is an excellent example of what our customers (THE COMPANIES WHO CONTRACT US FOR WORK) do for our production management business model and our non-profit mission. If not for our valuable customers, we would not be able to provide the employment opportunities for our work force to learn and grow!

andy started working at Handi-Crafters in the workshop learning how to tape cardboard boxes. He then quickly mastered the other jobs in the shop. After his first year at Handi-Crafters, he moved into the warehouse where he learned how to band cardboard, move skids, and help his supervisor with a variety of jobs. He says that his favorite job in the warehouse is to move skids with fin-ished product. andy loves to work at Handi-Crafters because there is consistent work even in inclement weather. He believes his job is very important to his overall health so he can come to work and stay active all day. Working at Handi-Crafters has given him the confidence to obtain his driver’s license four years ago, and buy a car! andy is very proud of these accomplishments and feels a sense of freedom to drive himself to and from work. His warehouse supervisor, Dave Court, reports he is reliable and wants to do a good job. andy is known for being polite, cooperative, bright and one of the “best dressed” at Handi-Crafters.

In The Community! Our New Community Participation Program

All people, regardless of abilities, should have access to, choice of, and an opportunity to partici-pate in a full range of community activities when provided the opportunity and appropriate supports. Our Community Participation Program enhances the opportunity for individuals to seek and enjoy the benefits of greater community involvement and greater room to grow independently within the community setting. Handi-Crafters launched the program this year in conjunction with the Pennsylvania s Office of Developmental Programs. The goal of this program is to help individu-als to increase potential for competitive employment, build greater natural supports, increase independence, experience meaningful community participation, and expand social relationships beyond the work center.

This program is designed to broaden individual horizons by scheduling and going on community excursions as part of their work day. Up to three individuals participate in the planned activity under the supervision of one staff person. Transportation is provided by Handi-Crafters, however, costs associated with the activities are the responsibility of the individual.

For all of us, new jobs bring a learning curve. For yan, exposure to new corporate expectations and

employment structure brought additional challenges. The position did not work out for the long term, but was viewed as a terrific stepping stone and opportunity of reflection and growth. yan headed back on the employment trail. He called me everyday, said MacCarty. We had a good idea at where his skill set may be most positioned for employment success. Enter, Oxford based, Prettyman Excavating and Septic Service. Company owner, James Prettyman was considering a position. He met with Edie and yan to discuss the job and expectations and yan was hired. yan is an assistant on excavating and septic service job sites. He is deployed with his supervisor, Bill Stafford and works three days a week. Now, nearly a year into the job, Ryan tells everyone how much he loves his work and bosses. He is doing a great job for us, said James Prettyman. According to his supervisor, yan caught on to his job quickly and is a hard worker. He is a big help on jobs. You may think that we did a good thing for yan, but, having yan, its been a good thing for us! Stafford said.

This year 24 individuals worked with our l en e al s s n e r ne

job in the community.

Ryan Abel Working In The Community There are two things that you would note about Ryan Abel from the minute you met him, he likes to work , grew up on a Southern Chester County farm, and, he has a big personality. A popular guy, who likes to chat, doesn't miss a beat and is a friend for life. Over a dozen years ago, Ryan Abel started working at Handi-Crafters. He spent those years learning new job skills, keeping a fast paced production rate and working on mobile crews. Ryan also enjoyed the social connections with colleagues and staff at Handi-Crafters. With his well-rounded skill set, work ethic and confidence; conversations with his family and team turned to time. Time for

yan to transition from work center employment to community employment.

Last year, yan paired up with Community Employment Specialist, Edie MacCarty. The two began considering employment options, working on applications and honing interview skills. The first job offer came from Herr Foods and yan bid farewell to Handi-Crafters.

All Handi-Crafters staff are required to take annual trainings on many important topics like client rights, medical diagnoses, fire safety and many other client-focused trainings. In doing so, Handi-Crafters is committed to complying with all state regulations for training, but more importantly to provide the very best professional and current support for our individuals.

This year Handi-Crafters implemented a new training system from elias Learning which is an online training service that offers the professional curriculum required by our staff. Some of our staff need at least 24 hours of training while others need as many as 80 hours of training per year, depending on the job and its responsibilities. For example, Mac Bradley and Meredith Ferry work in our Community Participation Program. Their curriculum courses total 80 hours. Mac reports the on-line trainings are very good because they are accessible, and allow him to do his job, but he can complete the trainings around his schedule. Meredith reports the medical trainings on seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. are very helpful to her so she can confidently and safely take individuals out in the community. The training schedule and curriculum is dispersed to all staff and must be completed during the course of each year. In general all trainings require passing a quiz at the end of the course to ensure the material is understood and can be applied.

Many of our workers have health needs that require trained oversight. Marcia Bashore is Handi-Crafters full-time and much adored nurse at Handi-Crafters. Nurse Marcia has been on staff with Handi-Crafters for almost a decade. I enjoy my job, I love all of the clients, says Basehore. Marcia is a key member of the staff here at Handi-Crafters and is counted on for her professional credentials as an LPN. Marcia is always on the move. In her day she covers two-buildings dispensing medications, administering first aid, handling emergency s and assisting with toileting. Prior to coming to Handi-Crafters, Marcia served as a Hos-pice Nurse. She says, she loves her days, and is used to the high-pace environment. "I am truly humbled everyday by our clients,

For all of us, new jobs bring a learning curve. For yan, exposure to new corporate expectations and

employment structure brought additionalchallenges. The position did not work out for thelong term, but was viewed as a terrific stepping stone and opportunity of reflection andgrowth. yan headed back on the employment trail. He called me everyday, said MacCarty. Wehad a good idea at where his skill set may be most positioned for employment success. Enter, Oxford based, Prettyman Excavating and Septic Service. Company owner, James Prettyman wasconsidering a position. He met with Edie and yanto discuss the job and expectations and yan washired. yan is an assistant on excavating and septicservice job sites. He is deployed with his supervisor,Bill Stafford and works three days a week. Now,nearly a year into the job, Ryan tells everyone howmuch he loves his work and bosses. He is doing a great job for us, said James Prettyman. According to his supervisor, yan caught on to his job quicklyand is a hard worker. He is a big help on jobs. Youmay think that we did a good thing for yan, but, having yan, its been a good thing for us! Staffordsaid.

This year 24 individuals worked with ourl en e al s s n e r ne

job in the community.

With his well-rounded skill set, work ethicand confidence; conversations with his family and team turned to time. Time for

yan to transition from work center employment to community employment.

Last year, yan paired up with Community Employment Specialist, Edie MacCarty. The two began considering employment options, working on applications and honing interview skills. The first job offer came from Herr Foods and yan bid farewell toHandi-Crafters.

In The Community! Our New Community Participation Program

All people, regardless of abilities, should have access to, choice of, and an opportunity to partici-pate in a full range of community activities when provided the opportunity and appropriate supports. Our Community Participation Program enhances the opportunity for individuals to seek and enjoy the benefits of greater community involvement and greater room to grow independentlywithin the community setting. Handi-Crafters launched the program this year in conjunction withthe Pennsylvania s Office of Developmental Programs. The goal of this program is to help individu-als to increase potential for competitive employment, build greater natural supports, increaseindependence, experience meaningful community participation, and expand social relationshipsbeyond the work center.

This program is designed to broaden individual horizons by scheduling and going on community excursions as part of their work day. Up to three individuals participate in the planned activity under the supervision of one staff person. Transportation is provided by Handi-Crafters, however, costs associated with the activities are the responsibility of the individual.

"This award grants us the opportunity tosay thank you." said Amy Rice, Executive Director. Presenting CTDI with this award is very significant. "The support of CTDI is tremendous, if not for our customers our mission could never be fulfilled. There would be no development of skills for our workforce, no learning, no growing and no paychecks." CTDI is an excellentexample of what our customers (THECOMPANIES WHO CONTRACT US FOR WORK) do for our productionmanagement business model and our non-profit mission. A Welcome Message From Our President & CEO, Brian L. NagleDear Friends,

As we toil our way into another year at Handi-Crafters, Inc., my faith in our mission impels me to recognize those who serve at the core of what we do, to express gratitude for the accomplishments made in the prior year by and on behalf of our clients, and to look forward to thegood things to come. Handi-Crafters is open weekdays from 8am-430 pm. Our staff serve tirelessly throughout those many days. And yet when you visit, which indeed you should visit us, you will see our staff and our clients enjoying themselves, and not only packaging tins ofCrazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty, or Kiwi Shoe Products, but sharing fellowship, a lending hand, and a good meal. Our clients are happy to be atHandi-Crafters. Our staff, from part time veterans to workshop supervisors to our directors, do their work with the same level of commit-ment and care as the parents of differently abled children who started Handi-Crafters in 1961.

We’ve made some more progress to boot. Under the Board’s leadership, toward the end of 2018, we adopted our new “4 year Strategic Vision and Plan.” I am grateful for the contributing staff and board members for enabling the preparation and adoption of this tremendousspringboard. Thanks too to Carl Francis for his expert guidance with the project. With fair warning not to bite off more than we can chew,we have much work ahead. Along the way, we revamped our organizational chart and thereby launched a renewed effort toward successionplanning, installed a 2018 worthy security and limited access and monitoring system, and updated the awfully outdated bathrooms in theSpatola Center.

We are progressing with plans for our new building addition, which promises to help carry us into the future of our service with a technologycenter, a new adult daycare facility, and other important elements that I will be telling you more about very soon.

In 2018, we enjoyed volunteering visits from many friends whocame and spent a day or more working side by side with our clients, including our Parents, Board of Directors, D.L. Howell and Associates,MacElree Harvey, The Hankin Group, Dupuy Synthes, SAP, Key Bank and Krapfs, West Chester University Baseball and Shire Pharmaceuticals. See you soon!

Gratefully yours,

Brian L. Nagle Handi-Crafters | AnnualReport 2017-2018

Our Annual Report is dedicated to Robert “Bob” Spatola. Bob was Handi-Crafters greatest Ambassador, committing nearly thirty years of dedicated

volunteer service and generous philanthropy to our mission.Bob passed away peacefully at his home on April 6, 2018.

Bob served on our Board of Directors and was Chair for two terms as well as the Chair of the 2005 Capital Campaign. Bob's infectious energy and support helped to guide

Handi-Crafters up until his final days.

His devotion was by far the greatest in caring and loving the people who work at Handi-Crafters.Bob would truly light up the workforce, knowing names of all workers, passing out hugs,

exchanging stories and playful taunts. Bob also celebrated everyone's birthday.Bob was a warm and generous friend to all. And we loved him for it.

His passion for telling Handi-Crafters story was special, heartfelt and proud. Bob not only madethe commitment of his personal time, he was a true investor in our mission

and his leadership of giving was significant year after year and he challenged others to follow.

For his dedication and commitment Bob received the 2016 Best Friend Award. Bob's legacy lives strong on our building at 215 Barley Sheaf Road, The Spatola Center.

We thank Bob's wife, Hannah and his family for sharing him with us over the many years. While our lives have been changed and our hearts heavy, we celebrate the

shear honor of working with him, his exemplary leadership andfor his service and his pillar of dedication.

Community is a “group of people living in the same place or having ar ular ara er s s n n a eel n ell s ers as

a resul s ar n n a u es n eres s an als

I participate in a number of communities. There is my neighborhood. A very diverse group of individuals who share those events, such as a dog park being proposed in our neighborhood, that come together in time of need but otherwise are merrily cordial.

My friend, Kristine, who is one of the many dynamic workers of the Handi-Crafters community, is also a member of several other

communities. She is a central member of her life share community, a valuable and talented member of the Special Olympics community, and a citizen

of the Coatesville Community.

We are each a product of the communities we belong to. In turn these communities enhance each other contributing to the life experience of the individuals.

No one community is more or less then the others, each is necessary for a complete, well lived life.
