Where Do You Put Lights ?

Billy Beachum shares the following story in his Student Discipleship materials.

“A girl who worked in a factory became increasingly frustrated with the immorality around her. One day she went to her pastor and began to tell him how difficult it was for her to work with so many non-Christians. “Pastor,” she said, ‘you just don’t know how hard it is to go to work on Monday morning and hear all the stories about the partying that took place the weekend before.’ Her paster replied, ‘Where do you put lights?’ The girl, barely hearing his question rushed one, saying, ‘And you can’t imagine how terrible it is to have to work with people who smoke and cuss all day!’ ‘Where do you put lights?’ he questioned again. This time the girl hesitated with a puzzled look on her face but then continued on. ‘Pastor, you couldn’t possible know how hard it is to work with a bunch of men and women who come to work and talk about their affairs and sexual sins.’ Again the pastor challenged the girl, ‘Where do you put lights?’ Finally the girl stopped in frustration and responded. ‘Well, I don’t know where you put lights - in dark places, I guess!’ The words had barely left her lips when it was as if a light had come on, for the girl understood the point her paster was making. She was to be God’s Light in that very dark factory where she worked. She left church that day with a vision burning in her heart for what she could do to reach her co-workers for Christ, and in the next several months she led nine of them to the Lord.”

Do you work in a “dark” place? Maybe you go to school in a “dark” place. You might even live in a “dark” place. The real problem isn’t the darkness, it is always the lack of light - because light always overcomes darkness!

When God had decided to destroy the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham began what seemed like a “negotiation” with God! Would you save the cities if there were 50 righteous people found with them? God said he would. The “negotiations” continued. What about 45? Would you spare the cities if there were 45? 30? 20? How about 10? If there were ten righteous people, would you spare the cities? God said “Yes, I will spare the cities for 10 righteous people!” But there were not 10 righteous people and the cities were destroyed. So, here’s the question. Were the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed because of their immense darkness, or because they had so little presence of light?

A short story of how Mountain Mission school came to be: The time was early Spring of 1888. The place was the mountainous terrain of Eastern Kentucky. A 10 yr. old boy named Sam Hurley, poorly clad, was alone in the woods and was about to “bed down” for the evening. Day after day, he had walked from one house to another, searching for work in exchange for food to eat. His father had died earlier and there was no income in the Hurley household. The few jars of canned food in the pantry had been gone for days. Sam found a rock outcropping which he called a cave and kicked the stones around to make a smooth place to lie down. Some half-decayed leaves pulled up around him provided a blanket of warmth to his shivering body. He prayed for God’s protection throughout the night. He told God if he would spare him from the mountain lions, he would build a place for boys and girls like himself so they wouldn’t have to sleep in the woods.

Sam became a successful businessman, even though never attending school. He married at 22 and his wife taught him to read and write. After taking in many children in Grundy, Virginia who had no where else to go. Sam started Grundy Academy, which later became Mountain Industrial Institute ... which is now Mountain Mission School.

Sam hired Dr. and Mrs. Josephus Hopwood who had recently retired from Milligan College to set up the educational system of the school. Mrs. Hopwood served a Dean of Girls. After their health began to decline. Sam and his wife Jane took over and moved onto the campus, putting all they owned into Mountain Mission School.

It is estimated that more than 20,000 children have received care at MMS since its founding in 1921. Chris Slone, great-grandson of Sam Hurley, now serves as the school’s sixth president.

The campus which first consisted of one building and now contains 7 building for housing children, an educational building, vocational and fine arts building, campus chapel and administration building. It is much like a small college campus. Typically, 200-230 residents students (ages 18 months to 20 years old) reside on campus. More than 95% of MMS graduates go on to college.

for Missions Sunday on March 8th. Yes, Steve is Dennis’ son and David’s brother. So mark your calendars and make sure you are here with your

family. Don’t forget there will be very large pitch-in luncheon following our morning services.

If you have not had the opportunity to experience one of our Food Pantry Saturdays - it’s amazing. We are always in need to personal hygiene

products (shampoo, soap, toothpaste/toothbrush, deodorant). Containers have been placed in the foyer and Fellowship Hall for all donations. See Debbie or

Patti if you would to help with the February Food Pantry.
