Who is Hammurabi?

Hammurabi is an ancient babylonian king from 1792-1750 B.C. He was born in 19th century B.C at Babylon(Iraq). He is best known as the Author of the Code of Hammurabi.

Where was he from?

He was from Babylon. Babylon was the capital of a small city state of Mesopotamia, named Babylonia, located in what is now Iraq, near the modern town of Hilla.

Hammurabi’s code of laws was written in a stone monument that stood approximately seven feet tall and was called a stele. They used the language called Cuneiform.

8. If a patrician has stolen ox, sheep, ass, pig, or ship, whether from a temple, or a house, he shall pay

thirtyfold. If he be a plebeian, he shall

return tenfold. If the thief cannot pay, he shall be put to death.

Meaning : If we steal something and we don’t pay for it then we will get a really big punishment.

Personal agreement or disagreement : I agree with it because stealing a big stuffs

are always bad.

The law does exist today.

14. If a man has stolen a child, he shall be put to death.

Meaning : If a man stole a child, he will be put to

death.

Personal agreement or disagreement : I agree with it because we are not allow to steal or take a kid that

has an family.

The law doesn’t exist now.

17. If a man has caught either a male or female runaway slave in the open field and has brought him back to his owner, the owner of the slave shall give him two shekels of silver.

Meaning : If a man caught a runaway slave in a open place and bring them back to the

owner, then the owner have to give him a compensation.

Personal agreement or disagreement : I agree with it because its just like finding a missing person for them so

they need to be thank you to the man and give him a

compensation.

The law exist today.

decoded law#4192. If the son of a palace favorite or the son of a vowed woman has said to the father that brought him up, "You are not my father," or to the mother that brought him up, "You are not my mother," his tongue shall be cut out.

Meaning : If the son of a great person say to his parents“You are not my father” or “You are not my mother”, then his tongue

shall be cut out.

Personal agreement or disagreement : I don’t know if its

right or not because if the parents did something really

terrible and he said that, then it can be okay but if he just say it without any reason then it will be

Meaning : If a son has struck his father, his hand shall be cut off.

this because its rude to struck our parents.
