They showed their fury, anger and dissatisfaction by blockading the main

Ramotse residents and most of the villages around the Hammanskraal are having queries over water and other water related issues. Still, the company that is contracted to supply household with water in Ramotse seems not to care. Some members of the community allege that they have a problem with some illegal connections when others say that they have more than three pipes in their yards.

Hammanskraal News was sensitized of the problem and noted with great awe how water is wasted and

lost. Mr. Jacob Kgantsi (pseudonym) alleged that every leader who takes office decides to start with a water project. Together with a number of his friends, they unanimously told Hammanskraal News that they were fed up with water, water and water everywhere one goes. They claimed that the contractor had appointed some members of the community that helps to eradicate and diminish poverty but the leakages are unacceptable. One of the se elders (not to be named) stated that the quality of the work done in this respect is very poor. He alleged that there is a leakage in most of the connections. He added that the pipes are installed in very shallow diggings. He said that the said pipes are subject to grader damage when roads are to be fixed. It was also mentioned to Hammanskraal News that the most (approximately 80 percent) of water meters are also leaking. He voiced that the amount of water lost in the leakages could be made to better use. He added that they had complained to the

councilor about the matter and he had done nothing to remedy the situation. The allegation was further referred to connections whereby the contractor would dig up the main pipe and not connect in time. He claimed that the water would then flow unabated for days on end. He concluded that the loss of so much water can be attributed to carelessness. He concluded that the government regularly sensitizes residents on water conservation but that is not heeded by senior personnel. Some of the community members complained that the wasted water runs through their yards and makes them muddy and slippery. On the other hand the mud is a concern as children end up playing in and with the mud that is sometimes taken into houses with their shoes. They concluded that the cleanliness of their houses is put at stake. Ward 73 councilor, Jappie Aphane mentioned that he was not informed of the leakages that come from the joints to the water meters. However, he admitted that the street that is mentioned was under development. He further stated that some of these things do happen accidentally.

Unlikely threats of horrible ways to die seem to cause more fear than the more likely, everyday fears that we face every day. For some of us, the current media hysteria about Ebola has fanned latent hypochondriac tendencies into a raging obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although we climb into cars or taxis and head off for work or the shops without a second thought about our

country’s annual road death toll of 18 000, we often panic about our ridiculously tiny chances of contracting a viral haemorrhagic fever. This is because the Ebola death toll in West Africa currently stands over 900 and the US Centre for Disease Control has encouraged American citizens not to travel unnecessarily to Guinea,Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ebola has no cure or vaccine and kills up to 90% of its victims. That said, the average South African has such a small chance of becoming infected with Ebola that the risk is almost zero. It is a viral haemorrhagic fever most commonly found in remote villages situated near tropical rainforests. It is not a food-borne or air-borne disease – in order to contract Ebola, you need direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person.

The incubation period varies from two to 21 days, but patients are not contagious until they start showing symptoms. Any infected people who enter the country

via O R Tambo or Lanseria Airports with high fevers will be detected by thermal scanners; and, according to Health Miniser Motsoaledi, “Our surveillance activities are extremely effective.”

Perhaps one way in which Ebola could spread in South Africa, however, is if infected travellers from West Africa enter the country undetected while in the incubation period of the disease – before showing symptoms - and then later fall ill. So, should you develop the following symptoms, go and see a doctor as soon as possible: “fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, weakness, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite, and abnormal bleeding.”

Another millionaire has been made at The Carousel. This time it is Mrs H Nortje from Pretoria who won a whopping R1.3-million Mega Duma Jackpot on Tuesday, the 5th of August.

This is the second Duma millionaire made at a Sun International casino in less than a month. In July, a Gauteng veterinarian won

himself a cool R1.5-million on a Duma machine at The Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth. More than a hundred millionaires have been made at The Carousel and Nortje is the first Duma millionaire to be made at The Carousel. Commenting on the latest million rand win, Slots Manager Kevin Brett at The Carousel, says: “There is nothing better than seeing one of our customers win big. Certainly, when someone becomes a millionaire it is something to celebrate. We congratulate Mrs Nortje on herimpressive windfall.”According to Brett, there are 160 Duma slot machines at play at 12 of Sun International’s casinos in South Africa. This group of machines is known as Wide Area Progressive Slot Machines. This means that everyone who plays on the Duma machines countrywide contributes towards building the progressive jackpot, which starts at a minimum of R600 000. The Carousel has 10 Duma machines, which are extremely popular. Slots are the simplest and most popular casino games. With 700 slot machines, The Carousel has a wide variety of slots games and provides a selection of denominations to choose from. Depending on the challenge, and customer’s budget, denominations range from as little as 1c to a maximum of R100. Duma machines can be found on the non-smoking and smoking casino floor.

Opinion piece by Linda Yates

How many of the politicians who profess their undying love and allegiance to our constitution can quote the fourth founding provision found in the first chapter of our country’s supreme law? Do those who recommend a constituency-based system for our national parliament know that the principle of “a multi-party system of democratic government” comes straight after “universal adult suffrage, a national common voters roll” and “regular elections?” How many remember that the basic principles underlying our constitution were chosen during a multi-party negotiation process?

South Africa is a diverse country. We have nine provinces and eleven official languages. Having a

multi-party democracy makes sense, because we need to build a unified future to repair our divided past. Political analysts have a theory to describe this. They divide societies into two categories: those with cross-cutting cleavages and those with coinciding cleavages.

South Africa, unfortunately, is a country with coinciding cleavages. It is still the case that being born black is more likely to make you poor and uneducated, while being born white is more likely to guarantee you a future that is financially comfortable. This creates polarisation which, in the worst-case scenario, leads to civil war. In such a country as ours, a two-party system in which one

party is very vocal about representing black have-nots and another party, which represents white haves, attack each other’s policies and performance frequently and aggressively does not make for progress. A system with many parties is much better for South Africa, because it encourages a multiplicity of voices and the strengthening of cross-cutting cleavages; for example, the bond between black and white Christians or the common values held by middle-class South Africans of all ethnicities. With the rise of the Economic Freedom

Fighters, black votes are now significantly divided and the ruling party is being scrutinized from both the right and the left. Our new democracy and our developing economy need many ideas, many voices and many solutions.

One of the dangers of a two-party system for South Africa is that we have an increasing number of voters who are disillusioned with the ruling party, but have also not found a suitable political alternative. These citizens may either sink into apathy or resort to service delivery protests to express their political opinions.

Encouraging a love of reading in the next generation could change South Africa forever. Arguably, the greatest problem facing the nation is unemployment, and one

of the most effective ways to reduce joblessness is to improve the education of the work-force, and one of the best methods to upgrade academic performance is to foster a culture of reading.

According to the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, reading to children improves their thinking and reading ability. The Institute’s research has shown that parents who read to their children six or seven days a week give them an intellectual headstart of almost a year over children who do not enjoy this privilege, and even improve the performance of school beginners in numeracy. ]Inspiring children to read is not difficult. Here are a few hints and tips:

• Inspire a love of books from babyhood by buying cloth and cardboard books for babies, and reading to toddlers and children.

• Put children to bed with a book. Let them turn the light off when they are tired of reading. Set a bed-time, not a sleep-time.

• Put notes in your children’s school lunch-boxes or leave them lying around the house.

• Organize games that involve searching for written clues. For example, give children a slip of paper with the words

• Let your children watch television programmes with sub-titles.

Most importantly, parents should not fuss too much about the literary merit of what their children are reading. What matters is encouraging children to read something.

Community of Hammanskraal have always had a challenge about transport to Pretoria due traffic overflow and many accidents taking place on R101 road.

Some commuters have raised their concern about high prices of taxi fare and poor bus services conditions. This

might be change in the next two months to come due to the resumption of railway transport at Hammanskraal Station. United Commuters Voice (UCV) representing transport users in the country it announced that the trains will be operational in October. Tshwane UCV Regional Gilbert Morifi said from the meetings they had with Metrorail and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) the trains will be operating from the first day of October 2014. According to Morifi the commuters of Hammanskraal approached us as their representative

pleading for the return of the train in their area they then had an agreement with Metrorail that about two trains in the morning and evening will be operational in next two month emphasized . The renovation and maintenance of the station infrastructure according to Morifi is expected to commence very soon. “UCV have no powers about employment because Metrorail is owned by PRASA which is a State Owned Enterprise (SOE) so it will decide who and how to employ those who will be doing the work” explained Morifi when answering questions from commuters. The train will be pulled by locomotive goods train according to Morifi, he said that the services will start at Hammanskraal station then later will be expected to reach

Pienaars Rivier and Bosplaas station. He cited the reason as being vandalism that has taken place at various stations since they were no longer operating. We appreciate the urgent response from Metrorail through a short notice by promising the return of train to the community of Hammanskraal. The meeting was also attended by UCV committees from Mabopane, Garankuwa, Saulsville/Atteridgeville, Mamelodi/Pienaarsoort corridors including Mabopane Railway Station ManagerDavid Rikhotso, Solly Kganyago from Mamaelodi Station. Those representing Metrorail told Hammanskraal News that they attended as observers but they confirm that the information is correct and referred us to their managers for interview.

Unemployment is no longer the issue in the minds of South African youth. Reatlhegile youth advisory Centre from Mmametlhake in Moretele two is doing wonders for youth in their area.

Reatlhegile youth Centre is a center formed in July 2005 in Mmametlhake

area in Mmakau section by Obed Ngubane Maubane who saw the chances of upgrading the youth of his area by bringing youth together in one place. Maubane said the reason he opted for youth advisory center was because they were struggling with internet access, although after implementing their plan was a little bit difficult for him and co-member. Though he couldn’t even stop thanking William Monama who has been pillar of strength to these youth.Maubane said at least they managed to get some donation or help from department of social development in 2009, and that’s where they kick starterd properly after years

of struggle. Adding to that was that in the same year, they were nominated in the youth awards in their local municipality called DR J.S Moroka, where they scooped position 3 out of all youth advisory centers that were nominated in the social development awards.“We didn’t stop there as we entered another awards in the province in 2010 and managed to get position 2 in 2011 we went again and got position 1 in the provincial awards”. While in 2013 they participated again in Nkangala Municipality were they

got position once again. Saying they call themselves trophy specialist. Maubane says the challenges they come across are that they currently in need of sponsors as they struggle with equipment and other office resources. in their center they offer the following programs Life skills, career guidance/expo, entrepreneurship, events skills and social help. And they accept everyone in their Centre. Alfred Kgaga who is one of the volunteers said he saw these as the opportunity to do plough back to his community.Kgaga who is classified as their main man in IT, says what he likes most is the computer. Where he spent most of his time teaching other volunteers how to excel in computer and being an asset to the center. He said now

that they have youth center in their area everything is simple for them to do. Saying ‘ I encourage other youth members to come and join us as we strive to revive the spirit of youth in our area’.

Kgaga said “after joining Reatlhegile it was like a dream come true as it gave me chance to plough back to the community that had faith in me”. He said their wish as youth is to see all areas in Moretele 2 been upgraded especially after launching another youth center in Marapyane.

I encourage other youth members to come and join us as we strive to revive the spirit of youth in

our area’.

H ammanskraal Local Netball Association (HLNA) League second week games were full of goals from different teams after a sloppy start at the beginning of the season this month.

Secretary Caroline Khalo said the league was launched at the beginning of this month though

teams were not that envious, she believes that this is as a result of most of the players not having played in offi cial leagues before. “I think the other reason is that during the launch some of the players were still scared as they were used to playing in minor friendlies and not professional games or league before,” said the coordinator, Mohau Dithejane. The league comprises of 6 teams in each division which is under 17 and the senior team. Dithejane said that each team has affi liated R500 for both teams (divisions) in order to participate in the league. He explained to Hammanskraal News that each team has registered 15 players for each division and they are expected to play ten matches for the current season. The winners of the league will be given medals including a netball kit however, Dithejane emphasized fi nance and funding as one of their major challenge. The participating teams in the league are two divisions from a single team namely Abashwe Netball

Club of Temba, Juventus of Kekana Gardens, The Returns of Stinkwater, Top Girls of Ramotse and Vukani from Eersterus. The senior divisions’ games started with few goals from six teams, the fi rst match was between the Returns and Top Girls. The Game was competitive as the Returns won 9- 8 against Top Girls which failed to secure single goal to obtain a draw. The second game was between Abashwe which managed to clinch 12 goals against 11 of Kanana Queens, confi rmed Dithejane.Deputy Secretary Caroline Khalo said that the league is some of their effort to improve the development of netball in Hammanskraal. “We want to see local players participating in regional, provincial and lastly in the national teams of SA Netball” explained Khalo. Khalo cited lack of discipline such as time complaint and team managers have a major role to play in insuring players behave professionally. She said that they also like to plead with private and local business people to provide fi nancial support as we have challenges of purchasing safety kit and having personnels who will conduct fi rst aid to the players.
